The Collegiate Convocation Tuesday, June 30, 2020
UWinnipeg Collegiate Class of 2020 You made a big entrance when you arrived at our school, full of energy, wisdom, and desire to make a difference and to leave your mark on the Collegiate. Now you’re making a memorable exit. We’ll never forget the UWC 2020 convocation. This isn’t the graduation that you imagined, but you’ve proven that you can handle disruption and disappointment with maturity and resilience, and that might be a more valuable experience than crossing a stage in a cap and gown. You’re leaving the Collegiate as students, but you’re not leaving our family. Today, you become alumni and you join generations of our alumni who have taken the best of the Collegiate experience out into universities, work places, friend groups, volunteer settings, and other places as their lives unfold in beautiful and unexpected ways. We hope your time with us has helped you to grow, and that we’ve encouraged you to be lifelong learners, careful thinkers, and strong role models for those around you. Remember the people who help you along the way, and be that helpful person to others who need it. Keep in touch with us. We love hearing from you and we can’t wait to celebrate your future achievements. We wish you all the very best. Congratulations class of 2020!

Convocation Video Transcript We have missed being with you, sharing your lives, both the good and the bad. We look forward to sharing your joys and concerns in the future. We miss seeing you in the halls and we truly hoped that we could do this in person. Convocation is one of our most favourite events of the year, everyone is beaming and everyone is so proud of the graduates. First and foremost we want to tell you how proud we are of your ability to adapt to adversity in one of the most notable years of your lives. You will remember this wild year forever. We are proud of your tenacity and diligence, your ability to adapt and to thrive. We have appreciated how you have been there for each other which has enabled you to take care of yourselves. You are resilient, creative, strong, caring, and simply amazing. You started the year with hope and excitement and ended it on a random Friday afternoon. We wish we could have spent more time with you. We wish we could have watched you write your exams. We wish we could have said au revoir in person. We wish you bright futures. We wish that you stay hungry, stay foolish. We wish you a lifetime of healthy risk taking to keep your fear of judgment in check and your mind strong. We hope that you love deeply. Even though this isn’t how any of you imagined it, every moment in life will have something to teach you. Treasure these memories forever. You have your whole lives ahead of you, so move forward, don’t forget your dreams. Or we wish you deep and undisturbed sleep so you don’t even remember your dreams Remember that when the world stopped, one of our first impulses was to plant seeds and watch things grow. So take something positive out of this adversity and use it to excel in your future. And whatever you do or wherever you are, connect to people, create community. You will always be part of The Collegiate community and family. Remember that you are always welcome back. We love it when our former students drop in on us. You have always been unique and you are now unforgettable. We are proud of you, we love you, and we are here for you always. ¡Felicitaciones Promoción 2020! 07
Deans’ Remarks UWC Graduates, this is not how we planned to celebrate your amazing accomplishments and achievements. There is no doubt that the year 2020 will be forever etched in your memories. Not just because it is your grad year, but because it is the year in which life as you knew it shifted on a global scale. It is a year, that will be marked in future history books. Just think about it. In 2040 when you are celebrating your 20th year high school reunion, Collegiate students will be studying the Global Pandemic of 2020 in their history class. Our world, your world changed forever, in the blink of an eye. There is no question that you have endured numerous negative impacts with the world coming to a grinding to a halt. Your classes where shut down, You were forced to leave with little notice on a Friday without the opportunity to say goodbye to friends and teachers, convocation had to be moved online and some of you have family and friends who have been impacted by covid. However, I want to encourage you not to dwell on the negatives of this current situation. Throughout history, humanity has trudged forward with contagious positivity and resiliency to influence powerful change through times of crises. So, I encourage you not to waste the crises that stands before you. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, see this time as an opportunity to be an influencer of positive change for the future. This afternoon I want to challenge you to use this time as an opportunity to be an influencer for a better humanity. Within this challenge I want to provide you with a few simple starting points. Take Time to Pause & Reflect As the world has ground to a halt, we have been afforded more time to pause and reflect on what is really important, such as fond memories and the little things in life that bring us joy. Over your school career you have already had so many life experiences. Friendships were made and broken, you mastered the monkey bars for the first time, discovered your first soul mate, experienced loss together and won championships together. As you journey forward make sure to continue to take time to pause and reflect;
Learn from your mistakes,
Continually examine your core values & beliefs,
Determine what is really important within your values and beliefs,
& move forward as a better individual tomorrow then you were yesterday. 08
Act with Love & Compassion Towards Everyone Since January it seems like our world has been in a constant state of crises management, from the fires in Australia, the downing of Ukraine Airlines Flight 752, Covid-19 and more recently reminders about racial inequalities that still exist in our world. When we see events like this, we can’t help but be reminded about the importance of our families, our friends and more importantly equality for those who are underrepresented and racialized. When reflecting on these global events, I have been reminded about how critical it is to act with love and compassion for everyone. The Collegiate strives to be a place where all individuals are welcome and valued. During your four years at the Collegiate faculty, staff and administration endeavored to lay a solid foundation of love and compassion for all humanity. And though at times, in our own humanity, we still miss the mark, we continue to encourage that all of us, together, strive towards creating a world that has love and compassion for all. Remain Resilient Making a commitment to influence change and to make a positive impact on our world is hard work. But you are not students who are averse to hard work. To graduate from the Collegiate is not easy. It takes commitment, hard work and resilience. However, resilient you are as Collegiate grads, your resilience was tested even further as we moved to online classes within your final few weeks of high school. Although, today you may feel like your resilience has been tested to the core, the true test of your resilience has really only just begun. When we take a look at the global events that have taken place over the last three months, it is clear that our world needs individuals to make an ongoing commitment to positive change for the future. I believe that as Collegiate Grads you are up to the call. So, I encourage you to not to waste the crises that has been set before you. As Grads of 2020 there are none better positioned to seize the opportunity and responsibility to influence a new and better human reality. But I warn you, to influence such systemic change is hard work. The reason it is so hard, is because the work must begin within each of us individually. To move forward as a better individual tomorrow, than you were yesterday will require you to continually pause and reflect, learn from your mistakes, examine your core values & beliefs, determine what is really important within your values and beliefs, act with compassion and love towards everyone. Finally, your success in this endeavor will require an astronomical practice of resilience. The Collegiate, faculty, staff and admin have watched you grow over the past four years, and we believe you are up to this monumental task, that the course of history has set before. You truly are an amazing group of graduates and we are going to miss each and every one of you. On behalf of everyone at the Collegiate I would like to congratulate you for your many accomplishments and contributions to our school community. We have been truly blessed to have been part of your educational journey. Today, does not just mark the completion and celebration of a 13-year journey. Today, marks the day, where you can embrace the opportunity and responsibility to forge a better humanity for yourself and the individuals you come into contact with on a daily basis. Congratulations! 09

Individual Faculty & Staff messages The time has finally come where you leave the Collegiate behind and pursue bigger and better endeavours. Cherish the memories you’ve made, visit often and most importantly take the skills, attitudes and understandings forward wherever you go next. You are capable of all you’ve ever dreamed of! Look out world, here comes the Class of 2020! —Madison Cyr If By Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! —Jolene Braun 11
Congratulations. This year has likely been one of the oddest adventures you have been on, but there will be many more exciting ones yet to come that will outshine this time. Enjoy these milestones and make sure to set down more on your path to your next big adventure! —Jennifer Harris I have always appreciated my older brother’s sage advice. He has always known the right thing to say in any situation. Recently I asked him how I could possibly handle all of this. He calmly replied “Do you know how to eat an elephant? I paused ... then he continued “One bite at a time. “ Perfect! —Gerry Narynski Remember to think with passion, act with kindness, and resist mindlessness. You are not a number, but a human being, one of our Collegiate human beings. Go forth and build the world you want us all to live in. XO —Karen Zoppa I sat across from you listening to your hopes and dreams, and was inspired. I know this pandemic wasn’t part of your plan but when it ends (and it will), my hope is that your realize your dreams and go on to inspire others. —Cathie Herd Caminante, son tus huellas el camino y nada más; Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.[...] Traveler, your footprints are the only road, nothing else. Traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk.[...] (Fragment. By Spanish poet Antonio Machado. Translated by Mary G. Berg and Dennis Maloney. —Rossana de McCormack A special word to our international students....You left your home to come all the way to Winnipeg to study with us, and we loved having you here. You have such enthusiasm for learning and courageously met all the challenges of coming to live in a new culture and country. You have strong bright futures ahead of you, and we hope you have happy memories of your time at the Collegiate in Canada. GONGXI NI to those who have returned home to China! —Roberta Gottschalk

To the Graduates of 2020, I’m so proud of everything you have accomplished — your hard work, growth and resilience. I’m impressed every day by your dedication to learning and your commitment to helping each other. I’m confident that you are going to be a dynamic force shaping our future society. Love and best wishes from Ms Tarr —Karen Tarr We find ourselves living in strange times. It is difficult, or maybe impossible, to predict the shape of the future. Someone once said that the best way to predict the future is to invent it so, enough talk, get out there and start changing the world. —Rob Sveinson “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” —Vivian Greene Graduates, may you dance, today, tomorrow and everyday thereafter. Since I don’t have the opportunity to leave you with a math comic, a math pun will have to do. “When math majors graduate, do they get degrees or radians?!?!?” Miss you much, Ms. Livesley —Kelly Livesley To The Collegiate Class of 2020, My first memories of you are as Grade 9 students coming to see Ms Pasieczka in our office. As I got to know you better, I realized that you are smart, friendly, fun, kind, and full of character. I respect and honour you, and wish you the best that life has to offer. I will miss you, and look forward to your future visits. As you journey forward, remember that everything happens for a reason, and that reason is usually physics. —Dena Martin Congratulations to all of you! I am so proud of each and every one of you. Many of you have overcame obstacles, faced adversity and fought to accomplish so much. I hope you take some time to relax, celebrate and spoil yourselves. You deserve it! Good luck in the future. I look forward to visits and hearing about all the amazing things you are doing in the world. I will miss you. Cheers to the class of 2020! —JoAnne Small

Dear Collegiate musicians, I enjoyed our many conversations, and will miss your lovely minds and kind hearts very much. I wish you freedom from the fear of judgment to keep seeking truth. Please stay in touch along the way! Sincerely, Ms M —Renise Mlodzinski I’d like to extend my warmest and heartfelt congratulations to the UWC graduating class of 2020. If there is one lesson that you can take from the guy in the office, it’s this: be good to one another. Congratulation again, and good luck in your future endeavours! —Romer Bautista I wish all of you success in pursuing the paths that truly matter most to you. The world is full of distractions and noise; remember to grow your kindness, wisdom, and integrity. —Bonnie Talbot In the 1930s a survey showed that parents wanted to raise children who are kind over those who were successful. A more recent survey has shown the reverse. A new study by Harvard University confirmed that most parents in the U.S. put good grades and success in sports ahead of kindness. In my many years at the Collegiate I have seen fantastic student academic and athletic achievement but I have not seen students lose sight of the importance of caring, kindness and acceptance. I’m glad you all are bucking the trend! I wish you all good luck in the future. —Robert Patterson Congratulations to all of graduates. This year, after 40 years standing in front of high school students, 30 at The Collegiate, I too get to leave high school. I hope I imparted some ideas beyond the content of my course; if not remember it is not where you start, it is how you finish. —David Welham This graduation class will clear everything up, at least looking back. Be humble, kind and well class of 2020. All the best from Mr. West. Hang Loose. —Mike West
