Dean’s Remarks There is no doubt that the year 2021 will be forever etched in your memories. Not just because it is your grad year, but because it is the year in which life as you knew it shifted on a global scale. Who could have predicted that students would spend a year studying in hybrid classes, as the world battled a pandemic? The past year has definitely been an unprecedented experience in your scholastic career. You have had to navigate the ongoing challenges of lockdowns, pivoting to hybrid learning, cohorts, Zooming for classes, forgetting you are on mute, sticking to the fundamentals, and adjusting to a new normal. I want to express my deep gratitude to this graduating class, our staff and faculty, for the amazing way you handled this past year. When faced with extreme uncertainty and adversity, you exemplified our values of maturity, respect, responsibility and citizenship with perfection. It is because of your influence and contributions that the UW Collegiate truly is best high school in the city. As you embark on new life adventures, I challenge you to reflect on what important life lessons we can learn from events in the past 15 months, to grow into global influencers. In parting I leave you with several of my personal reflections to encourage you in this journey. Take Time to Pause & Reflect As the world has ground to a halt, we have been afforded more time to pause and reflect on what is really important, such as fond memories and the little things in life that bring us joy. Over your school career you have already had so many life experiences. Friendships were made and broken, you mastered the monkey bars for the first time, discovered your first soul mate, experienced loss together and won championships together. As you journey forward make sure to continue to take time to pause and reflect; — — — —

Learn from your mistakes, Continually examine your core values & beliefs, Determine what is really important within your values and beliefs, & move forward as a better individual tomorrow then you were yesterday.

Act with Love & Compassion Towards Everyone Our world has been in a constant state of crises management for over a year. In times like this, we can’t help but be reminded about the importance of our families, our friends and more importantly our own personal wellness. In my own reflections, I have been reminded about how critical it is to act with love and compassion for everyone. The Collegiate strives to be a place where all individuals are welcome and valued. During your four years at the Collegiate faculty, staff and administration endeavored to lay a solid foundation of love and compassion for all humanity. And though at times, in our own humanity, we still miss the mark, we continue to encourage that all of us, together, strive towards creating a world that has love and compassion for all. Remain Resilient In the past 15 months you have had to remain extremely resilient. Making a commitment to influence change and to make a positive impact on our world is hard work. But you are not students who are averse to hard work. To graduate from the Collegiate is not easy. It takes commitment, hard work and resilience. As Grads of 2021 there are none better positioned to seize the opportunity and responsibility to influence a new and better human reality. But I warn you, to influence such systemic change is hard work. The reason it is so hard, is because the work must begin within each of us individually. To move forward as a better individual tomorrow, than you were yesterday will require you to continually pause and reflect, learn from your mistakes, examine your core values and beliefs, determine what is really important within your values and beliefs, act with compassion and love towards everyone. Finally, your success in this endeavor will require an astronomical practice of resilience. The Collegiate, faculty, staff and administration have watched you grow over the past four years, and we believe you are up to this monumental task. You truly are an amazing group of graduates and we are going to miss each and every one of you. It has been an honour to serve as your Dean. On behalf of everyone at the Collegiate I would like to congratulate you for your many accomplishments and contributions to our school community. We have been truly blessed to have been part of your educational journey. Congratulations on a job well done!
