STRATEGIES FOR A SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR 1. Plan your time wisely and cultivate good study skills by attending the Study Smart Workshops in September and October. 2. Know The University of Winnipeg dates and deadlines including the last dates to drop courses and obtain refunds. Set reminders in your calendar for your assignments and exams. 3. Become engaged with your lecture material by getting involved in class discussions and joining or creating a study group. Prepare for each class by reviewing your previous lecture notes and by reading ahead in your textbook. 4. Talk to your Professors. They are real people who are interested in your learning and want to help you. 5. Prepare for exams by studying over several weeks instead of cramming. 6. If you are struggling or start to fall behind, speak with your Professor or an Academic Advisor right away. The terms go by very quickly and taking action as soon as possible helps to solve issues before they get too large. 7. Create a balance between academics and your personal life. Join a club or group and check out the University cultural and artistic life. Attend the Volunteer Fair in September to find an organization you may want to be involved in. 8. Check out The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA). 9. Make connections with your peers. All new students want to meet other students. 10. Take care of your physical and mental health. You need to be healthy and energized to be productive and successful in your studies. 11. Build and maintain a support system. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to ask for help. See the list of services which can assist you in this Resource Guide. 12. If you have a question, ask it! There is a lot to know about how things work at The University of Winnipeg and we are here to help you navigate your education and make it the best experience possible!
