STUDIO ARTS & CRAFT CENTRE

OUR MISSION

The Studio Arts and Craft Centre offers engaging classes, workshops, and events within a positive studio atmosphere and is dedicated to the education, enrichment, and creative fulfillment of all members of the UWM community. The SACC provides open studio space, as well as specialized studio equipment for ceramics, traditional black and white photography, sewing, metalsmithing, and printmaking. We also offer a variety of supplies for purchase including clay, photo paper, film and screenprinting inks and screens.

LOCATION

The Studio Arts and Craft Centre is located on the street level of the UWM Union, Room EG30.

SPRING 2013 HOURS Monday through Thursday: 11am to 10pm Friday & Saturday: 11am to 5pm Sunday: CLOSED*

(Exception: members in special workshops taught through SACC.)

The Studio Arts & Craft Centre will be open from Tuesday, January 22nd through Friday, May 10th, 2013. We will be closed for the Spring Break on Saturday, March 16th – Sunday, March 24th, 2013, as well as the weekend of Friday, March 29th – Sunday, March 31st. Please note: The screen-printing facilities will NOT be open for public use on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm – 4pm. The darkroom will NOT be open to the public Monday evenings, 6pm – 8:30pm.

MEMBERSHIP FEES Current UWM students: FREE Alumni, staff, faculty: $135 Community members: $155 One day membership: $4/day

CLASS & WORKSHOP REGISTRATION Participants must pre-register for all classes and workshops. Sign up EARLY! Any class with less than four registered participants will be cancelled and all fees will be refunded in full. Notification of cancellation will occur 48 hours before the start of the class. Class fees vary by subject and duration of the class. Class fees include a membership for the duration of the class. Memberships do not include supplies.

REFUND POLICY

If the Studio Arts and Craft Centre cancels a class, a full refund will be issued. If you cancel at least 48 hours before the start of a class, a transfer to another class or a raincheck will be issued. Rainchecks are good for one year.

PAYMENT

We accept cash, check, MasterCard or Visa for all transactions.

AGE POLICY

Due to safety regulations and the nature of our space, no persons under the age of 13 are allowed in the Craft Centre, and persons aged between 13 and 17 require parental supervision at all times.

Explore what it means to sculpt the contemporary figure in clay! Instruction will focus on observing and modeling the figure from life using an armature, and hand building techniques.

Develop your knowledge of the potter’s wheel as a formative tool. This course will introduce baskets, bottles, teapots, and more. Along with expanding upon the basic forms commonly used in beginning ceramics, this class will introduce basic surface treatment techniques as well.

Twenty-five pounds of clay, a live model, glazes and firings are included in the class fee!

Students should have some prior throwing experience. Limit 7 participants

Learn the basics of metalsmithing, and create your own jewelry and unique metal objects! We will introduce you to basic techniques including the use of several important tools (jeweler’s saws, torches, files, flex shaft, etc), soldering, cold connections, patina, and finishing.

From t-shirts to posters, the popularity of screen printed graphics never dies! Learn the fundamentals of screen printing, from designing graphics to processing your screen and printing on a variety of materials like fabric, paper, and wood. Students must provide items to print on.

Learn the basics of making functional pottery on the potter’s wheel! In this five week course, students will learn basic throwing techniques while creating unique bowls, mugs and vases. Class will not be held March 19 due to Spring Break.

Unique uniforms and uncommon costume, made-to-measure! Learn to sew, No-Sweat! Produce personalized patterns (both busts and bottoms) to suit silhouettes with fresh fabrics or appropriate preexisting apparel. Texturize your textiles with surface structure. Originate your own ornamental opulence and focus on favorite features!

Glazes and firing are included. Limit 7 participants.

Class will not be held March 18th due to Spring Break.

Interested in learning how to sculpt a bust in clay? Join this class and capture the likeness of a live model using an armature and solid clay modeling techniques! Students will experience the entire process of building a solid clay model on an armature to the glazing and post-firing surface treatments. Twenty-five pounds of clay, a live model, glazes and firings are included in the class fee!

In this five week class, students will learn to draw from observation using both the traditional and the contemporary way. Through concentration on the uses of line, proportion, perspective, value and form, students will be given the foundations of drawing techniques and skills. The course will concentrate heavily on experimentation and development from one drawing to the next, using mediums such as vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, and ink. No previous drawing experience is required.

We are excited to kick off our brand new printmaking department this spring! Generally, printmaking is the process of pulling multiple impressions of an image, with the exception of monoprinting. Participants will learn to use a press to complete monoprint, intaglio, and relief works. Make sure to be a part of our inaugural printmaking course! Paper samples will be provided on the first day, all other paper supplies must be purchased separately.

Even in the digital age, we are still drawn to the magic of traditional black and white photography. Learn the basics of your film camera, sharpen your composition skills, and start developing and printing from black and white negatives. Students must provide their own camera. Two rolls of film and one package of paper are included in class fee.

Well, come and learn the basics of color mixing, paint application, compositional approaches and many other helpful strategies that will lead you on your path to fame. Enameling is the colorful result of fusing special powdered glass to metal. Students will learn the basic techniques of enameling on copper including preparing the copper, design strategies, powder application techniques, and fusing.

Join us to explore the traditional dyeing techniques used for centuries in many Eastern cultures! Make yourself a beautiful dyed scarf to wear and show off your creative flair! If you have any natural fabrics, feel free to bring them in as well! We’ll provide the dye, wax, drawing tools, and two scarves for each student to batik!

Learn how to turn thin gauge copper metal into small unique forms that can then be used to make one-of-a-kind jewelry! In this two day workshop, students will learn how to manipulate metal using wood forming blocks and special micro-hammers.

Are you in the market for a bold piece of jewelry? Perfect! Take this workshop and learn how to add a colorful surface to metal objects and jewelry. Choose from pre-cut shapes and add a unique finish to make a pendant, bracelet or earrings. Students will gain the knowledge of cutting and filing metal and will then experiment with a powder-coating gun!

“Man builds no structure which outlives a book.” - Eugene Fitch. In this one day workshop, students will explore the creative potential of the book as an art form and as a tradition! Book covering as well as several binding techniques will be taught to the students of this workshop.

Have some old photo negatives lying around or maybe some you’re not so fond of? Come and repurpose them through photo negative alterations and collaging! With creative printing techniques and new skills, you can recycle those leftover negatives and receive in return a beautiful work of art. Bring in your own or we will provide some of ours and enjoy this unique, fun workshop!
