Silver Cloud Hotel Tacoma at Point Ruston WaterfrontWelcome and thank you for joining us this evening!
As we gather to celebrate our Centennial, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every one of you. Your unwavering support and dedication have been instrumental in our ongoing work to create possibilities together and make a lasting impact on our community.
Together, we have set a bold goal of moving 15,000 ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families out of poverty and into self-sufficiency by 2028. Your generous donations, tireless efforts, and steadfast commitment have helped us make significant strides toward achieving this goal. Through our collaborative efforts, we have been able to provide critical support to 7,800 families facing financial challenges, including access to education, financial coaching, and basic needs, empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future for themselves and their children.
I want to express my deepest appreciation to our dedicated board members, committed staff, and our invaluable community partners for their unwavering support and collaboration. Your passion, expertise, and diligence have been the driving force behind our achievements, and I am truly grateful for your partnership.
On behalf of everyone at United Way of Pierce County, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all our supporters and donors for your incredible generosity, compassion, and commitment to creating positive change in our community. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of families and individuals facing poverty, and we are truly grateful for your continued support.
Thank you for being a part of our journey and for helping us create possibilities together.
With deepest gratitude,
Dona Ponepinto President and CEO United Way of Pierce CountyGreetings! We are honored and grateful to have you join us for our “Creating Possibilities Together” Centennial Gala of United Way of Pierce County!
Tonight, we’re celebrating the legacy of every donor, family, company, and volunteer who have contributed to our mission of fighting poverty for the past 100 years. We’re celebrating YOU!
Since our founding in 1921, we have invested $350 million back into our community. We are proud of the impact we have made, but we know that there is still much work to be done. Poverty has widespread consequences, affecting issues such as crime, unemployment, poor health, domestic violence, isolation, and depression. Our promise to you is to continue leading the fight against poverty for the good of ALL people in our community.
Thanks to your generosity, we have already raised $6.3 million towards our Centennial Campaign’s fundraising goal of $8 million and reached our goal of 25 planned gifts. These funds will support three key impact areas in our fight against poverty: Basic Needs, South Sound 211, and Center for Strong Families. Through these programs, we have been able to provide vital support to over 143,708 individuals for their basic needs, connect 80,087 individuals to resources through South Sound 211, and help over 3,000 individuals participating in Center for Strong Families increase their average monthly income by $1,943.
Our bold goal is to lift 15,000 families out of poverty into financial stability by 2028, one family at a time. We believe that by investing in these key impact areas, we can create real systems and multi-generational change. The return on investment from lifting just 100 households out of poverty increases purchasing power and sales tax by $4.6 million annually into our local community.
As we gather tonight to celebrate our achievements and honor our donors and volunteers, we also humbly ask for your continued support. There is still more to be done, and your contribution can make a real difference in the lives of families and individuals facing poverty in Pierce County. Don’t miss this opportunity to leave a lasting legacy and help shape our future.
On behalf of United Way of Pierce County’s Centennial Committee, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication to our mission. Together, we can continue to create possibilities and build a healthier, more thriving community for all. Thank you for being part of our journey and for your generosity.
With heartfelt thanks,
Debbie Bingham, Todd & Teresa Silver, Jim Walton, Campaign Tri-ChairsAmanda Westbrooke has long been inspired by the gifts of storytelling. For the past decade, Ms. Westbrooke has served as host of TV Tacoma’s CityLine, a weekly economic and cultural affairs program. As a natural educator, here, Ms. Westbrooke wafts and weaves local tradition with urban progress. Her experience includes expertise in human resources, teaching, and curriculum development. She has also served as Director of Education and Outreach for Tacoma Little Theatre and as Strategic Project Manager for Metro Parks.
As a mother to a grown daughter, Olivia, Ms. Westbrooke would be the first to admit the lessons of life have only just begun to tell their story. Her love of gardening, food, films, fashion, opera, and classical music reflects Ms. Westbrooke’s style, grace, and elegance that comes naturally to her role as the host for the Creating Possibilities Together Gala. To inquire about Ms. Westbrooke’s services, kindly email amandawestbrook913@gmail.com.
Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed at the age of 15, when she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving all of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” (You can hear Ms. Michalek’s full story about her Marathon win through local NPR affiliate KNKX’s weekly Sound Effect broadcast, Episode #173.) Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has also created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how nonprofits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again. I still set out to win, however, this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”
To hear what folks are saying about Ms. Michalek visit www.lauramichalek.com or email auctioneer@lauramichalek.com or call direct at 206.464.0850.

You’ll be spellbound in wide-eyed wonder as you take off from Kenmore’s new launch site at Ruston Point and circumnavigate the San Juans in your cozy, but comfy, Kenmore Air seaplane. These emerald gems of our Salish Sea are composed of 172 different named islands and reefs that sit between Anacortes, Washington, and Vancouver Island, Canada. All told, there are 408 miles of shoreline on the islands, the most of any single in the United States! Your Kenmore scenic tour will provide an incredible perspective, allowing you to see exactly why Orcas Island is known for hiking (it’s the hilliest, with Mount Constitution rising nearly a half mile) while Lopez is best for biking (it’s the flattest). You’ll spot four lighthouses located on the San Juan Islands, but not a single stoplight. The islands are also home to three different orca pods living in the Salish Sea region. With water that can be gunmetal gray or clear Caribbean turquoise blue depending on the day, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll see in the sea and on land! You’ll see why they say the best way to see the San Juans is from above!
Thank you to Kenmore Air. Value $500.
