Season Preview

Season Preview UW-Stevens Point softball head coach Ryan Konitzer enters his second season with the Pointers looking to build on his 12-win season. Konitzer has brought in an abundance of new faces to fuel success in 2019. The youthful squad features two All-WIAC upperclassmen, five sophomores and eight freshmen. The Pointers softball team is thrilled to take the field this season and play with new energy and excitement for the game. Returning to Lead UWSP returns three all-conference selections, senior Morgan Johnson, junior Ashley Cohen and sophomore Lauren Luedtke. The lone senior on this year’s squad, Johnson was an All-WIAC first team selection in 2017. Last season, Johnson led the team with 10 doubles, 17 RBI and 39 total bases. She recorded 44 putouts and had four assists in the outfield last season.

Cohen returns for her junior campaign with the Pointers after a successful 2018 season in which she earned All-WIAC first team honors. In Cohen’s 31 appearances in the circle, which is tied for third in school history, she tallied three saves, 62 strikeouts and a 5.27 ERA. At the plate, Cohen led the Pointers with a .344 batting average recording 21 hits, nine doubles and six RBI. Luedtke started her college career off on the right foot earning All-WIAC honorable mention laurels last season as a freshman. In primarily a catching role, Luedtke maintained a .330 batting average with nine runs, 33 hits, five doubles, two triples and 10 RBI. In the Circle The Pointers feature four pitchers on the 2019 staff and look for young pitchers to step into big roles. Sophomore Anna Palicka will return to the circle, taking on the ace role this season. In 2018, Palicka recorded a 3.52 ERA on 31 appearances, tied for third in school history. She recorded six of the Pointers’ 12 wins and led UWSP with 94 strikeouts. “Palicka is by far the leader when it comes to the circle,” stated Konitzer. Konitzer brings in freshman Haley Barnes to pitch for the Pointers. Barnes was successful in high school, making it to sectional finals and played for one of the best

travel teams in Illinois. “She has been trained well and we are really excited to see her step up as a freshman,” said Konitzer. Cohen was impactful in the circle a season ago and will continue to see time in the circle in 2019. She will transition to an infield role this season and will still be a complementary piece to the pitching staff. Freshman Anna Pistone will help the Pointers with additional innings while also playing on the infield. Behind the Plate With Luedtke transitioning away from the catching role, the young Pointers have big shoes to fill. Two freshmen contend for the starting catching position, Sammy Buerger and Madi Greenaberg. Buerger took a year off softball in her first year of college and is now excited to get back into the game. She was an all-conference player all four years of high school.

Greenaberg comes from a strong high school program and a tough travel ball team. “It is nice to have two WIAC caliber catchers who both also play other positions,” said Konitzer. “The pitchers have loved working with them too.” On the Dirt Konitzer is making some changes in the infield to create a stronger defense in 2019. His plan is to assemble an infield that plays to the Pointers’ strengths, moving players into new roles and utilizing their youthful advantage. Freshman Pistone has been a dominant force at the hot corner and closing in on the starting position at third base. All-conference returner Cohen is excited to take on a new role in the infield this season. She can play all four infield spots, but Konitzer believes we will see her primarily on the right side at first and second. The junior will bring her stellar offensive skills back this season and is ready to get back to her more natural position as an infielder for the Pointers. Luedtke will transition to the shortstop position, a more natural position for the sophomore. She was the Pointers’ catcher a season ago out of necessity, but is looking forward to getting back to her roots on the infield. “She’s excited to get to the dirt. She’s a great team player, but her love is in the infield,” said Konitzer. Three freshmen look for the chance to take over at first base. Greenaberg, Jordyn Hynst and Erin Schmitt have all taken reps at first and are frontrunners to begin the season there. Also adding depth to all infield positions will be Sophie Lee. Konitzer looks to use all of his young players not only on defense in the infield, but also in pinch hitting and pinch running roles. Roaming the Outfield

The lone senior, Johnson returns to the outfield for her fourth season. Johnson will see a majority of playing time at the corner outfielder spots and do her part leading the young freshmen and sophomore outfielders that join her on the grass this season. In centerfield, Konitzer is excited about all-state freshman Maddie Candre. Candre collected allconference accolades in all four seasons. She also holds her high school record for most plate appearances and runs scored.

Pointers have two Minnesota dome doubleheaders, the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex D3 Invitational and the 2019 PFX Spring Games in Florida before they take on conference play. Konitzer looks forward to challenging games like Luther College, who is ranked No. 10 in the nation. He wants to be ready for conference games when they get back from Florida, because besides a few non-conference games it will be WIAC “go-time”.

On the opposite corner of Johnson, sophomore Rachael Wakefield will take the field. Konitzer was impressed with her work last season, batting a .311 average and ranked second on the team in stolen bases with eight.

The Pointers’ goal is to make the conference tournament this season. Konitzer is building a Pointers program with the “Today for May focus”. His goal is to make sure that no more seniors ever go through the Pointers program without experiencing a WIAC tournament.

Adding depth and speed to the outfield will be Natalie Coash, Halle Vardon and Buerger.

“Looking forward, I think we are going to surprise a lot of people,” said Konitzer.

Offensive Strike Offensively, Konitzer relies on his team’s speed to make his offense work. He looks to double his squeezes and add stolen bases to their already speedy approach. Konitzer’s “Run and Gun Offense” stole 43 bases last season, led by Luedtke who was a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts. Luedtke ranks third in school history for most stolen bases in a season. The next returners to lead with speed were Wakefield, who recorded eight, and Johnson, who added four of her own. The Pointers’ 43 stolen bases ranked third in school history for single-season team records.

Coaching Staff Joining the coaching staff this season are former Pointers Sydney Opdahl and Paige Allen. Both finished their collegiate playing career last season and have now stepped into a whole new leadership role. Allen tied the school record for career home runs with 16.

Schedule Konitzer plans to use the Pointers schedule to his advantage. This season, the

Ryan Konitzer Head Coach Second season Ryan Konitzer was introduced as the 13th head softball coach in UW-Stevens Point program history on Aug. 3, 2017. He came to UWSP from Alverno College in Milwaukee. In his first season with the Pointers, Konitzer’s team racked up 43 stolen bases, the third-most in school history. At Alverno, Konitzer led the Inferno to a school record in sacrifice hits and stolen bases in 2017. He won 13 games, including six in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play in his lone season at Alverno. Konitzer was an assistant coach at Lawrence prior to taking the helm at Alverno. Upon his arrival he helped the Vikings capture their first Midwest Conference North Division Championship in 10 years, while accumulating the second-highest win total in program history (28). In two

seasons at Lawrence, he helped the Vikings record the secondhighest fielding percentage .965) in program history in 2015. He also instructed the slap-hitters, which improved their batting average by over .120 in his two seasons with Lawrence.

championships. In that span, he helped lead the program to its first two appearances in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. The Ripon staff was named the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to heading to Lawrence, Konitzer was the head varsity coach at Lourdes Academy High School in Oshkosh for the 2014 season where he guided the team to a 14-5 record -- a ninewin improvement over the prior season -- and was awarded the Trailways Conference Coach of the Year honor. The Knights led the conference in stolen bases and sacrifice hits and made it to the WIAA regional championship game.

Ryan, his wife, Kendra, and their daughter, Henlee, reside in Marshfield.

He was an assistant coach at Ripon College from 200813, his alma mater, where the Red Hawks rewrote the record books and won a pair of league

Barthels’ primary responsibility will be as the pitching coach for the Pointers. “I have had the opportunity to work with Liz as a player, and as an assistant,” said Konitzer. “The one thing that has remained constant is her work ethic and her thirst for knowledge. She is a true student of the game, I fully expect her and our pitching staff to help us reach our goals this season.”
