September marks the start of the new school year, meaning children are taking the bus or walking to and from school every day. Safe driving is a must all year round, but especially when children are around. If you spot an unsafe driver, the Durham Regional Police has a Road Watch program where you can report dangerous drivers. Just go to www.drps.ca, search for ‘Road Watch’ in the top left hand corner and it will be the first result. Help keep our roads safe!

Dirt & Adrenaline: The Taboo World of Demolition Derby By Carly Foster
uxbridgetowntalk.com
// september 2011
We are packed together knee to knee on metal grandstands, eating hot sugary doughnuts and gravy-soaked French fries. It’s chilly at night now, so the wise regulars bring pillows and blankets to sit on, hoodies to stay warm. Kids swarm their parents, retired folk socialize with friends, and teenagers scan the crowd, wanting only to be seen at the place to be the second Saturday in September. Facing an illuminated dirt ring. Waiting for the crunch of metal. When auctioneer Gary Hill starts the countdown in his iconic voice, we scream the numbers like a spaceship is taking off, like this is the most important moment in time. And when the first smash reverberates through the air and the crowd roars its approval, we are united in a spray of flying mud. Welcome to the demolition derby. “If the crowd gets covered in mud, you’ve gotta be doing something right,” laughs Ken Barrett, who has run the derby at the Uxbridge Fall Fair for the past 12 years. A derby and car aficionado, Barrett is in charge of inspecting cars before they enter the ring, the volunteer organizers and safety flag operators, plus registration. Asked why people love to see cars intentionally crashing into each other, Barrett says it’s simple: taboo. “We’re all taught, when we get our license, that it’s bad if cars

smash into each other,” he says. “You don’t ever get to see that unless it’s an accident. [At the derby], there’s the adrenaline rush. It’s exciting to see how smashed up a car can get and still go.” But don’t think it’s a matter of just pedal-to-the-metal randomness when the three classes – cars, minis and vans – take the ring. There are rules and regulations in place for keeping everyone safe. “People think you just rip a car apart, drive in there and go crazy,” he says. “But there’s a lot of strategy in demolition derbying just like other motor sports.” Starting with the cars. At the Uxbridge derby, heavily modified cars are not allowed, and drivers must follow a strict set of guidelines on what they can, cannot and must to do to their vehicles. For example, all glass must be removed, the gas tank must be replaced with a metal marine one, the battery on the passenger side floor, and all flammable material except the seats removed. The driver’s door must be painted white as a no-hit zone; some paint the passenger doors white, too, to trick other drivers, Barrett adds. Sean Whitelock, owner of Lawn & Order Property Maintenance, has driven in three derbies. “It’s organized chaos,” he says. “Every time you go into the ring, you’re nervous until the first hit. Then it’s so fun.” Whitelock budgets $200-$300 for buying a car, then another $200-$500 to fix it up. It takes around 20 hours to be ring ready.

ting he brings a joke book with him. “It’s a very safe derby and the organizing committee does a lot. We should be proud of them.” Barrett himself spends a good 40 hours as organizer, plus the time of other volunteers, tractor drivers to clear the ring of destroyed cars, fire fighters and paramedics on site to put on a great show for the crowd. “Sure some do it for the [prize] money, but for the most part, and the people we like to attract to Uxbridge, are the one or two timers,” he says. “It’s really for local bragging rights.” This year’s demolition derby takes place Saturday, September 10 at 7 p.m. at Elgin Park. The biggest challenge nowadays is finding cars: with the price of scrap metal so high, they are harder to find. Hill has been the volunteer voice of the demolition derby (and the Friday night tractor pull) for more than 30 years. Two times he’s actually driven a derby car and announced literally at the same time. “I came second both times,” he says, adding the second time around he brought his headset to keep both hands on the wheel. “I had to be careful not to swear.” Hill says he loves the view from the wooden tower above the ring, sparring with fellow announcer Howie Herrema and being umpire for the crowd and drivers in the ring. “I try to be funny, and not sound like an idiot,” he laughs, admit-

Splat! Uxbridge home to newest Mudrun By Dana Kenedy

t’s time to grab your running shoes and jump in the mud because Uxbridge is the home to ontario’s newest mudrun: Mudnewton. So what exactly is a mudrun? “It’s a cross country run where you have obstacles like walls to climb over, fences to crawl under, and crossing ponds,” explains Erin Bennett, one of the organizers of Mudnewton. “You end with a big mud pit and crawl through (it) on your hands and knees and go through the finish line.” You don’t have to be a serious runner to take part. The first event is a five kilometre ‘try a mudrun’ race. You can walk or run; it’s not competitive at all, says the Uxbridge native. It’s more about having a good time outdoors. next is the 10 kilometre solo race, tailored to those who do run, and instead of completing the five kilometre track twice it’s on a whole new trail. The first male and
6
first female to cross the one kilometre mark will win a pair of $150 running shoes. Last is the 10 kilometre team run. The team of four starts together and finishes together. It’s also an opportunity to dress up in funny costumes. “I’ve seen people dressed like bananas,” Bennett laughs. The Sept. 3 races take place at Woodnewton at 4849 Concession 6; it was an old Christmas tree farm and cross country ski resort in the 1970s and 1980s. It’s the perfect location for a mudrun. It’s fairly hilly and ,“the infrastructure is all there,” Bennett says. Bennett can’t wait for race day to roll around. “We’re the trail capital of Canada, so let’s do some traily things!” He’s more focused on having a good time than having a competition. “We’re trying to make this event a place where fami-

lies can go and have some fun,” Bennett says. “And for the seasoned runner, it gives them a break from hitting the pavement.” At the moment, about 100 people are signed up, but “our goal is to get 300 people out,” he says. Bennett was surprised by the amount of out-of-towners signed up. There are plenty from all over ontario and even a couple of runners travelling all the way from Winnipeg. Registration is open on race day for $35 for the five kilometre race, $45 for the 10 kilometre solo and $150 for the 10 kilometre team. For more information or to register, visit www.mudnewton.com.

udy Fountain has been drawing and sketching since she was a little girl. Instead of buying presents, she would make her own cards for Christmas and Easter. When she found out about the Artists of Uxbridge, joining seemed like the perfect decision. The group formed in 2005 as a way for artists in the area to share their love of art with other likeminded people. They meet two days a week – Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings – where they paint, draw, participate in workshops, get critiques, and immerse themselves in a world of art. “Everyone has their own little specialty,” says Al Rickwood, member and past president of the group since the beginning. “You learn from each other.” Current member Jane Butler agrees. When painting alone, you never get a second pair of eyes to look over your work, Butler says. When painting in a group, the critique people can offer is priceless. With over 20 members, there are a variety of artistic mediums, says current president Louise de Bourbon, whose specialty is acrylic and oil pastels of animals. Rickwood started out with water colour paintings, but recently got into colour ink abstracts where he wets the paper, drops ink on it, then tilts the paper around, letting the ink run before letting it dry. “When you’re doing large abstracts, you don’t know what’s coming,” he says. He loves how people see different shapes and objects in abstracts; in a recent one, someone stated they saw a bird. You have to be brave and willing to try new techniques, Rickwood states. “Just have the courage to do it. It’s only paper.” He creates art because he loves it. “It should be fun,” he says. “If it isn’t fun, don’t do it.” The Artists of Uxbridge always welcome new members, so if you are interested in joining or want more information, visit www.artistsofuxbridge.ca or email jcbutler@powergate.ca.

Turkey Quinoa Meatloaf by Carly Foster
I
know. Meatloaf. I haven’t eaten meatloaf in probably 15 years. But when an extra large batch of free range ground turkey made it into my freezer, I went looking for something different to make with it. The recipe below is a combination of three found online, and let me tell you: it is absolutely delicious. Not super-meaty tasting, moist, a little sweet, and packed with a ton of protein with the addition of the quinoa, which replaces the bread crumbs in a traditional recipe. I served it with roasted fingerling potatoes and steamed broccoli, and my kids (5 and 2) gobbled it up like candy. Leftovers sliced thin are fantastic on a sandwich with spinach leaves and honey mustard.
Ingredients
glaze: 1/4 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. ketchup 1 tbs. honey Dijon mustard few splashes of Worcestershire sauce
1 tbs. olive oil 1 small onion, diced 1 large clove garlic, minced 1 lb. ground turkey 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup chutney, such as peach or mango 1 egg, beaten 1 cup grated old or extra old cheddar cheese 1 cup cooked quinoa
Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Heat oil in pan and saute onions until translucent. Add garlic for one minute to soften (do not burn). Mix cooked veggies with all other ingredients and press into a sprayed loaf pan. Whisk glaze ingredients and pour over top. Bake for 45-60 minutes, until juices run clear and sides pull away from pan.
