(HELLO HELLO))

I am an extremely curious and ambitious designer based in Spokane, Washington. I’m originally from Vietnam and have been in the U.S. since 2015. I have always been fascinated by different designs around me and the reason why I love what I do is that I am able to transform concepts into reality, and I always strive to create versatile designs that can make strong visual impacts on the audience. I am looking forward to using my creative skillset and abilities to create meaningful experiences through design while trying to keep my designs as environmentally friendly as possible.

The Research

VIEW ON GOOGLE SHEETS

The Problem LACKING EASE OF USE, CONFUSING INTERFACE After conducting a Competitive Assessment Research on 5 different thermostat devices that are being sold on the market at the moment as well as interviewing some people, I’ve found that many people don’t use thermostats most likely because of their ease of use. Different thermostats have their strengths and weaknesses, though many of them have the same problems such as having confusing features, or difficult to adjust temperatures.

The Opportunities I was able to find many opportunities to improve the ease of use for my thermostat redesign, which including but not limited to: Using effective icons on the main screen Enlarging temperature scale and numbers Include helpful information on the main screen, such as today's date and weather information Include usage history and energy tracking Use a good amount of color to help indicate when the thermostat is heating or cooling

Low-Fidelity Wireframes From what I’ve found and learned from the Competitive Assessment Research, I have come up with a list of key features that are must-haves for my thermostat interface redesign. I decided to focus largely on the ease of use and conserving energy, where people can save on utility bills while protecting the environment around them.

Key Features Temperature Control Current Date & Weather Information Temperature Status Light Lock Option Green Power Usage Icon

High-Fidelity Wireframes The high-fidelity prototype includes all the key features with primary information highlighted on the screen for ease of use. Secondary information are dimmed so that they don’t intefere with primary information.

VIEW PROTOTYPE ON FIGMA

Response I have asked a few people to test out this high-fidelity wireframes, and the user reaction to the concept prototype was overall positive. “I’ve never use a thermostat before because it’s so confusing, but I didn’t know until now how cool a thermostat can be. I love all the information displayed on the main screen, the icons are so cute and friendly, it even tells me if I’m doing good to the environment. I wish this was an actual thermostat because I’d definitely buy it!” -- Anne L., a coworker of mine who really cares about protecting the environment, responded to the interface

This project was created widespread usage of sing containers has resulted in the environment, and sust shows social responsibili carbon footprint and low The end product - the redesign - uses zero plasti percent recyclable and c many times as the custom

Original Packaging

The Problem EXCESSIVE & UNSUSTAINABLE PACKAGING MATERIALS This pair of headphones is packaged with a thick paper material for the box and a plastic window that showcase the product, a plastic tray that holds the earphones in place, and a piece of paper that is on the insert. The plastic material of the window and the box hanger is non-recyclable. The plastic material of the tray and the cardboard material of the box are recyclable but, in my opinion, quite excessive.

The Opportunities Though the original packaging has some flaws in the materials, I was able to keep many of its features in my packaging redesign, such as: Its bright, fun, and positive color palette The typeface choice The catchy title "groove onn." that includes the brand name but needs more clarification to make sure the customers don't mistake the brand to be "groove onn." instead of onn. A glass display shelf that the product will be placed inside for security reasons

Inspirations

Product Form Exploration Using points, lines, planes, shapes, forms, and the relationship found on my product and its existing packaging, I started taking pieces apart to find what's interesting about my product. and its functions in order to design my packaging.

Concept Sketches Based on the backward design concept and my identification of the problems and opportunities with the current packaging experience, I came up with a few different packaging concepts in paper form while thinking about the big ideas: function, shape, the total amount of material, folds, etc.

Prototyping With the first prototype, I mainly focused on the shapes and function of the packaging, how it will hold the headphones and how it would look like from the concept that I drew. After figuring out the shapes, I started to come up with the illustrations for the packaging redesign. My idea was to create different characters that would fit with each consumer's need and make them fun and memorable.

Illustrated Pieces

Feedback Before making my prototypes into the final product, I conducted some interviews with my instructor and some of my classmates about my prototypes. And most of the feedback that I've received from them are highly positive. “Such a fun idea!!" "So creative! I'd definitely buy this!" "This is awesome! Great work!"

Final Product After exploring the different concepts and the product forms, I came down to this final product packaging. There's an idea of making more illustrations for different faces and hair so that they're customized to each customer's needs, then the customers will be more willing to reuse the packaging.

Improvements

SUSTAINABILITY & USER EXPERIENCE I used a recyclable cardboard material for the packaging redesign that's thick enough to be reused as many times as the customers can, as well as using recyclable inks so that the whole package is now a hundred percent recyclable. In case a package is damaged, we'll have a system where customers can send us their damaged package and get a discount for a new one without having to buy new headphones with it. The experience when opening this package will be easy since it's quite self-explanatory, and the experience when using this product will be much better now that customers have a feeling that they're doing good to the environment.

The Start of The Research

Original Website

USER RESEARCH We started our research by discussing each group members' personal experience as well as interviewing prospective, current students and alumni about their experience when scrolling through the current EWU Design Department homepage.

The Problem After interviewing each other and other people's views on the website, we found that there are multiple problems that appear to confuse the readers and therefore make it not very accessible, which including but not limited to: Plain and boring banner, doesn't speak about what design is or what it's like when studying design at EWU Lacks vital information about what design is in general or the design program at EWU and what you can do with a degree in it The homepage layout looks boring and its content lacks useful info Doesn't make students feel like they belong to a design community when studying here Student works are outdated and unorganized Informational content is oudated and needs to be updated

Continuing With The Research COMPETITIVE ASSESSMENT We each researched about other schools' design programs and together, discussed about what we like or don't like about their websites and what we thought made them draw in their students' attention. From here, we came up with a list of key features with what we've learned that would help with our website redesign but still make our design department stand out and be unique in its own way.

Key Features Here's a list that we came up with of key features that we'd be focus on when redesigning the EWU Department of Design homepage: New banner as well as utilizing the department's logo to incorporate it somewhere in the banner Create/update content on what design is and what difference does EWU Depratment of Design makes compares to other schools Add a new section called Career Paths that helps students pick out different career paths they can take in the design field Up to date students' works Update faculty's information Add an Alumni section to create a design community for current students and alumni to communicate with each other

The Next Steps After conducting several researches and pitching our ideas to the EWU Department of Design faculty, we first met up with the EWU Marketing & Communications website designer lead to request access to the WordPress Demo coding site to conduct our website redesign project. We then started to recreate the content for the website redesign, from writing out all the information about what design is, in general, to help students get a glimpse of it, to explaining how our design department at EWU is doing that sets us different from other design schools and why students should attend at our school.

FRAME THE DESIGN CHALLENGE

Our project plan proposal to the Department of Design Faculty

Final Product Our final piece is a complete webpage that includes all of the key features that we want to incorporate in our website redesign. There was a bit of limitation when working with WordPress since we had to use EWU's website's components, so we couldn't create our own layout for this final piece. But in general, we are proud that we got to work together as a group and learned about working with WordPress.

Note: This website will be implemented to be the actual EWU Department of Design website sometimes in the fall quarter of 2022, according to the EWU Design Department Chair.
