Stroke Survivor

Bobby was at his restaurant when he realized that he couldn’t speak and his thoughts were jumbled. He was taken by ambulance to Redmond’s ER where the stroke team was waiting for him. The rapid diagnosis allowed Bobby to be treated with the clot dissolving medicine tPA within 17 minutes of arrival to improve blood flow to his brain. Forty-five hours after arrival, Bobby left the hospital with no effects from the stroke. Now he is back to running his restaurant and working on his farm.

GRAND COLUMN D NINA LOVEL her life-long river memories into the natural history of the Ocmulgee River, I heard fledgling touchpoints that have grown through the years. Today I confess my own undying love... my heart bends too, Dorinda. A RIVER CAPTURES ME.

When I say “a river”, I refer to any and every river on earth. I love them one and all. I can’t cross a bridge without craning my neck river-ward to look at the water, wondering from where it has come and where it will go. My earliest memories are of infatuation with the downtown confluence of the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers as they merged to form the Coosa. Standing on the front seat of the car next to my mom or dad, protected from harm by the instantaneous availability of a parental right-arm restraint, I would rise to tiptoes as we crossed the Second Avenue Bridge, craning my neck to gaze at those two strangely different-colored waters that smeared together just beyond the railroad track. Many years later, as a warm summer Saturday found me open to any diversion from my master’s degree work, I accepted my friend Gena’s invitation to paddle down a small nearby river. Though it had been decades since my canoeing adventures (or misadventures) at camp (remember, I was a chubby little bookworm), I took an anxiety-releasing deep breath as the current bore me gently along an incredibly beautiful natural corridor. Smitten, I was.

A RIVER INTRIGUES ME.

I stood at one end of a clear lagoon amid a Tennessee karst landscape, gazing at the deep hole on the bottom from which I had been told an entire subterranean river emerged. I had my doubts. The surface of the crystal-clear water was smooth and untroubled, but as I looked more closely I could see the dance of the sandy bottom below the deep current. Seeking to understand, I knelt, reached into the water and felt the power of the current press into my arm. We were told that the river would flow for a while but would soon dive again to resume its underground journey. Just, wow. A RIVER AMAZES ME.

Last summer, weeks without rain found our Northwest Georgia Rivers’ banks and beds exposed in places that had not seen daylight in years. The remains of a sunken river boat emerged on the Coosa, and despite a few challenges on the shallow shoals, undaunted Etowah adventurers continued to grab kayaks, tubes and stand-up paddleboards and play their way down the river, as the trip from Dixon Landing to Heritage Park is short enough to take at the end of a summer workday. Late in the summer, I located an artesian spring just downriver from the launch site that (of course)

NINA LOVEL D GRAND COLUMN is always there but can only be seen during very low water. Bubbling up through the sand of the Etowah bed on river-left, the spring became increasingly easy to find as the drought wore on. At one point the river was so low that the springs spouted fountain-like for a couple of inches above the river surface! Our ample spring rains (thank you, God) have once again covered the spring, and if years pass before another drought reveals it, that will be fine with me. A RIVER FILLS MY SENSES.

My love for rivers has led me to various volunteer activities with Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI), the river keeper for the Upper Coosa River Basin (coosa.org), one of which has been leading guided river trips. Nothing inspires river-love like a paddle trip does, so CRBI staff and volunteers lead many of these during the year. My favorite trips, however have been in the presence of one or just a few close friends who I am comfortable with in silence. Paddling in silence is, well, not really silent. The air is full of birdsong and the water splashes with diving kingfishers, jumping fish and turtles startled off their logs. You might hear something on the bank, but listen quickly because land critters run away fast and yes, that includes the snakes. I love snakes (don’t hate me) but have spotted very few on the river; we really do scare them away. To paddle on a river is to be immersed in creation. A RIVER GIVES ME PEACE.

My driven personality obviates the relaxation that others enjoy. An afternoon on the couch with a movie? I can’t hold still that long. Sitting with coffee and the paper? Nope; I scan it in the driveway when leaving for work. The moment my bottom hits my kayak on a river, though, my multitasking world falls away. I even silence the ringer on my phone. When you’re me that is peace. A RIVER GIVES ME CHILLS.

I’ll never stop feeling them when looking down from a bridge. Even on the smallest rivers I envision the deep dark channels beneath and I know the mysterious creatures lurking there. I know them from dozens of photos of gar and humongous blue and mud catfish and not-so-big channel cats caught, photographed and released (CPR fishing) by my son Jedd and his buddies, the Coosa River Chumbags. These beings are very, very big and very, very old (the fish, not the Chumbags), and they deserve to live out their lives in those deep places they love. Their presence means the river is alive. I do not fear them; they’re not going to bite me. Some days they won’t even bite the luscious bait the Chumbags toss their way. I’m at peace with that deep-river life, but I’ll always feel those chills.

A RIVER PROSPERS ITS COMMUNITY.

Rome was founded because our waterways fostered cotton commerce, and our rivers have supported industrial growth ever since. With the luxury of a plentiful water supply comes the burden of protecting it for future generations. This is not anybody’s job; it’s everybofy’s job. Rivers must be protected by governments, industries and citizens alike. Our Etowah, Oostanaula and Coosa are swimmable, fishable, floatable waters and businesses like River Dog Paddle Co. and as River Ratz Outfitters invest in paddle-powered fun, there grows a new generation of river-stewards. To play on a river is to fall in love with it. When CRBI hosts paddle trips in our river basin, around 75% of the participants hail from the Atlanta area. They rise early to paddle on our beautiful waterways and they remind us not to take them for granted. Downtown, our riverbank corridors host miles of beautiful walkable-runnable-rideable trails: our rivers are prospering our community. A RIVER LIVES THE LAWS OF LIFE.

When a river is full and rushing along, its power is obvious, but I have felt the power of an unseen current, and that amazes me more. On many a hot day I have stepped or slid off my boat into a smooth-surfaced stream only to have a deep-running current nearly push me over. “Still waters really do run deep”. One chilly November day, I went on a CRBI-guided fall foliage paddle down the Coosa. In the pre-trip safety talk, Joe Cook emphasized that we were to take out on the UPSTREAM side of the Lock and Dam; there was insufficient water flow to safely traverse the dam. Long paddle short, I’ll just say that I accepted a challenge from my paddling buddy (that’s grown-up for “I took a dare”), threw Joe’s caution to the wind and followed her through a narrow sluiceway in the dam. She made it; I didn’t. A novice at the time, I dipped my paddle on the shoal and it wedged in the rocks, pulled me off my boat, broke in half and then came free in time to bounce down the remaining six feet of dam with me and land safely in the downstream calm of the November Coosa. “Mad” does not begin to describe Joe Cook’s reaction to my swim, but we reconciled in the interest of my joining the CRBI board of directors, and I have since been paid back in like manner when guiding a trip of my own. “Pay attention to the experts, they know what they’re talking about”. A RIVER CALLS ME TO SERVE.

When you love something, you invest in it. My friend loves her garden. She spends the winter reading catalogs, mapping new garden designs and green-housing seeds, and right now her hands are daily in the dirt, her tomatoes are blooming grand |

NINA LOVEL D GRAND COLUMN and she’s thanking God for the warm spring and the rain. As soon as I fell in love with a river, I invested in it. That school-break canoe trip years ago launched my volunteer journey with CRBI. I have guided paddle trips, sold fish fry tickets, called for board votes, done boring landlubberadministrative-type stuff and um, well I hope this doesn’t discourage potential suitors, but once I did kiss a catfish for money. It was a CRBI FUNDRAISER, okay? There, it’s all on the table now. I’ve done this all from a place of deep calling and I am fulfilled. My childhood intrigue with the confluence is now intimate familiarity. I have motored, paddled and swam over and through it many times. I delight in showing paddle friends this strangest thing: because the water in the Oostanaula is shallower and flows more slowly than that in the Etowah, it is noticeably warmer. From a kayak, it is both fascinating and disconcerting to place one foot in each river (you can tell which is which by their colors) and feel the difference. Where once I viewed a river as a tiptoed child, now I see it from above, upon and within. I still crane my neck, but now it’s from the Loop 1 Bridge, following my heart as it bends down the Etowah to check on the fish weir just within

sight. I can tell how the river is doing that day. I can tell if it has paddlers, if it is high or low or has too much silt, and I’m glad when my spring is submerged. My love continues to grow. May this be the same for generations to come and may I do my part to make it so. Creation, my heart bends toward your rivers. “If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion.” St. Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179 Coosa River Basin Initiative is the official Waterkeeper® for the Upper Coosa River Basin, is the hotline for reporting water pollution, hosts clean water education, water monitoring, river bank restoration and advocates in favor of clean water legislation. The CRBI, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1992, has an awesome staff of three, a hard-working and dedicated board of directors and hundreds of energetic fun-and-clean-water-loving volunteers. LEE TREADAWAY D GRAND COLUMN

A Peace of Mind with LEE TREADAWAY

Many people find it difficult to think about or plan for their

own death, which is why most people do not have a will or other estate planning documents. For many, it is even more difficult to think about a loved one—such such as a spouse or parent—passing away. Along with the grief associated with losing a loved one, there is almost always a probate court proceeding that needs to take place and many people simply do not know what to do. It is advisable that you contact an attorney experienced in probate and estate matters. The procedure will vary depending on whether the deceased had a will, what type of assets the deceased owned, whether the deceased was married and many other factors.

If the Deceased Had a Will

If the deceased had a will, the will must be filed with the probate court in the county of the deceased’s residence or county where the deceased owned property. Along with the will, a petition to probate the will and a copy of the death certificate is filed. A petition to probate the will in “solemn” form or “common” form can be filed, with solemn form being the more common and generally preferable. The executor named in the will is generally the person who files the petition to probate the will. Once the petition is filed, and the deceased person’s heirs are notified or consent to the probate of the will, the probate court will have the executor swear an oath and will issue Letters Testamentary to the executor. It is the executor’s job to determine what assets the deceased person left, pay any valid debs of the deceased and to disburse the proceeds of the deceased’s estate according to the deceased’s wishes as recorded in the will. If all named executors in a will are unable or unwilling to serve as executor, someone—usually a family member or someone else close to the deceased—will need to file a petition to probate the will in solemn for with Will Annexed and the court will appoint an Administrator C.T.A. (with will annexed). The duties of an Administrator C.T.A. are much like those of an executor.

If the Deceased Had No Will

If the deceased person died intestate, that is without a will, the surviving spouse or sole heir is entitled to serve as administrator unless disqualified. Otherwise, a majority of the heirs must agree on an administrator. A person asking to be appointed administrator of an estate must also file a petition with the probate court. Unless all heirs of the deceased consent, an administrator must be bonded and must file inventories and returns with the probate court. Legal notice must also run in the county’s newspaper for four weeks before the court will issue Letters of Administration. An administrator will disburse the assets to the heirs of the deceased according to the state’s intestacy statute.

Year’s Support

Whether the deceased had a will or not, a surviving spouse and/or for minor children of the deceased asking that certain property of the deceased’s estate be set aside for the benefit of the surviving spouse and/or minor children. An award for year’s support takes precedence over a disposition in a will and, over all, unsecured creditors of the estate. Certain Ad Valorem taxes on real estate are also avoided by an award of year’s support.

What About Trusts?

Property that was placed in trust by the deceased is either disbursed or continues to be held in trust for trust beneficiaries according to the terms of the trust. The trust should name a trustee to administer the trust after the death of the deceased. No probate court procedure is required to administer any property that is titled to a trust. However, if the deceased owned assets that were not titled to the trust, then it is likely that probate of the non-trust assets will be necessary. Attorney Lee Treadaway is happy to announce that he has joined the firm of Cox, Byington, Twyman, & Johnson, LLP. Lee’s practice will continue to focus on Elder Law, estate planning and probate. You can contact Lee at Cox, Byington, Twyman & Johnson, LLP, 711 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161. The firm’s phone number is 706-291-2002.

ROME HEALTH AND REHAB D GRAND COLUMN As any healthcare professional would admit, there is no

greater joy than seeing and hearing firsthand the impact you’ve made in someone’s life. At Rome Health and Rehab, the success stories we see every single day brings continuous smiles and provides a sense of pride in what we do. We absolutely love hearing and sharing the success stories of our patients. Whether it be meeting the simplest of goals, or defying all odds and walking again, we are truly honored to have been given the opportunity to be part of our patient’s lives and their recovery. When Bob Moore came to Rome Health and Rehab for help after a horrible car accident, we knew extensive therapy was needed in order to not just get him walking again, but riding his bike again. Mr. Moore is a well-known and highly respected cyclist in Rome. Watching him walk out of the facility at discharge was truly remarkable. When hearing he was once again riding, all of us at Rome Health and Rehab were ecstatic. Below is the story of Mr. Moore in his own words:

On a January day in 2013, my wife and I were returning from Ft. Oglethorpe on Highway 27, when a young man crossed into our lane and hit us head on. We were transported by ambulance to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN where I had both legs operated on for multiple fractures. I had to have rods and screws placed in my legs, and my kneecap repositioned. I was told I would need therapy to recover and was instructed to not place my feet on the floor for three months to let my legs heal from the surgery. I stayed at Erlanger for several weeks and then was transferred to Rome Health and Rehab (Golden Living Center at that time.) I started therapy immediately and received excellent therapy every day. Everyone had told me that I would have to learn to walk again when the three months were up because my muscles would be too weak. However, the therapists did such a good job that I could walk immediately when the three months were over, and my orthopedic surgeon gave me permission to start walking! My wife kept asking the therapist if he knew that I was a 75-year-old man that had just received a heart transplant, but the therapist knew what he was doing and just smiled at her. Another very helpful service Rome Health and Rehab provides is a bus to take you to your doctor’s appointments and pick you up when you are finished. We even stopped at Bojangle’s one time to get something to eat on the way back home. I would recommend Rome Health and Rehab to anyone needing help to recover from a fall or accident. I was focused

on just walking again since I had not been able to walk for three months and even told I would have to “learn” to walk again. But after the amazing therapy I received, I could do much more than I walk... I could even ride my bicycle again. I have also led a couple of tours around Chickamauga Battlefield and can ride around the new GE Trails at Garrard Park. Sincerely, Bob Moore

Sometimes, the best therapy you can give to a patient is kindness, support and hope when they wish to reach a goal. Here at Rome Health and Rehab, our goal is your goal, our success is your success. Bob Moore’s story is one we love to share with others who enter our facility broken and leave with a new lease on life. Rome Health and Rehab is located at 1345 Redmond Circle, Rome, GA 30165. COMFORCARE HOME HEALTH CARE D GRAND COLUMN

Aging in Place

Growing Gray in Georgia

with COMFORCARE HOME HEALTH CARE

According to a recent AARP study, 90 percent of people 65

and older want to stay in their home as long as possible, and 80 percent think that their current home is where they will always be. There are many reasons why a senior would want to stay in their own home; it’s familiar, it’s close to friends and neighbors, and it provides a sense of independence. Unfortunately life happens and things change. Oftentimes, the change is slow. Maybe mom is showing the early stages of dementia, or dad is slowing down and just can’t get around like he once did. Other times, change happens very rapidly, as in the case of a stroke or maybe an unexpected death of a parent or spouse. When a loved one needs care, friends and family can chip in, but it is hard to always be there. The need is greater than they can take on. If it is a challenge there are several options, one of which is home care. A question we frequently hear when families are considering their options is, “So, just what is private nonmedical home care?” Home care allows people to live independently in their own home, on their own terms while continuing to do all the things they love. There are two main types of homecare services: Companionship and Personal Care. Companionship services help people with their daily activities such as: transportation to doctor’s appointments, the beauty shop, and running errands; medication reminders; grocery shopping and meal preparation; light housekeeping and laundry; and meaningful activities, such as playing cards, discussing current events and other favorite pastimes. Personal Care involves those hands-on physical care needs. Examples of these services are: transfers and ambulation (assisting getting into and out of bed, transferring from a wheelchair to a toilet, etc.); bathing, hygiene and dressing assistance; incontinence care; and feeding assistance.

The next question we usually hear is, “What are some signs my loved one needs help?” We first ask family members to consider the condition of the home. Is their home messier or more cluttered than normal, or are there household items left in the wrong place? Next we ask them to check the refrigerator to see if there are expired items inside. Seniors in need of assistance will also have unpaid bills or cut-off notices on their desks. A closer look will show that they are not taking care of their hygiene. They may not be changing clothes daily or brushing their teeth. Also, they may not be wearing the appropriate clothes for the season, due to not being able to reach seasonal clothes they have packed away. With all of these physical indicators, there are usually some social clues which can be helpful in determining if your loved one needs extra care. Missed doctor’s appointments, medications and social outings, like church, clubs or dates, can be a sure sign that they need a helpful reminder. Many of these signs point to the confusion and forgetfulness associated with old age. Homecare is a perfect option for those seniors who need the extra help, and want to stay in a place they love and are familiar with. This is how to get started with a trained profession who can assist your loved one in the home. First give ComForCare Home Care a call. An intake specialist will talk to you about your situation, your needs and answer any additional questions you may have about home care. We will then schedule an in-home consolation we call a “sofa visit.” Chip Mitchell (owner), a director of care, or one of our RN’s will come to your home and do a throughout evaluation of how your loved one wants to live and what services could be beneficial. Our RN will then develop an individualized care plan. The plan will be reviewed by you and your love ones to ensure all of your needs are met. However, the planning doesn’t stop there. We will stay in constant contact and adjust your loved one’s care plan as their needs evolve. With ComForCare at your side, you can live your best life possible. Contact ComForCare Home Care by calling 706-622-3065 or visit our website at www.nwga.ComForCare.com. You can also listen to our podcast Growing Gray in Georgia at www. growinggrayinga.com.

GRAND FEATURE « EARL TILLMAN

We are Rome text by TRIPP DURDEN

I

t takes many hours of practice in a field, hobby or profession to be considered an expert. It takes lots of time, passion, determination and dedication in order to truly master a craft. Earl Tillman has no doubt amassed ten thousand hours of flight time across his 61 years of flying airplanes, making him an expert many times over. One would think that after 61 years, Tillman might think of retiring his wings. When asked what keeps him flying at 84 he says, “Someone once said, Lord let me live till I die. So, that’s what I’m going to do.” Tillman came to Rome in 1950 to finish his last two years of high school with his twin brother Ed. They graduated from the Mount Berry School for Boys. “We both graduated with a 4.0 in both high school and college. He had a 2.0 and I had a 2.0, I guess that makes 4.0,” he laughs. After school, he was drafted into the army where he served eight years. He spent two years in active duty and six in the reserves. It was in the army where he learned to fly. He studied for his private license in an army flying club and received his commercial license using the Korean G.I. Bill for Veterans. In 1956, he met his wife Carolyn while studying aviation at The Army School on Fort Rucker in Alabama. It must have been love at first sight because the two were married in 1957. They would later welcome a son to their family, Gary, and a daughter, Tamara, who seemed to inherit their father’s brilliance and determination. Gary was an All-American track star at UGA and eventually became a pilot himself. Tamara went on to graduate from seminary, serving as a missionary in the Middle East, and now works for a church in Rome. Tillman acknowledges that he and his wife have had both great and trying times in their lives.

GRAND FEATURE « EARL TILLMAN The two lost their son Gary and their granddaughter Hannah in a plane crash in 2006. “Somewhere in the scripture it reads that there is a time for weeping and a time for laughter, we share both with you,” Tillman says. Earl and Carolyn Tillman love to brag on their daughter-in-law and their grandchildren. Despite living a unique life, in this way, he is just like any typical grandfather. His passions are not relegated to flying. He is also passionate about serving in the community. He has served as the president of both the Rome Kiwani’s Club and the Berry Alumni Association. He has also been involved in the leadership at his church, Rome First Baptist. He has also served on The Chamber of Commerce and the Rome Civil Air Patrol. A dedicated worker, he retired from insurance after 35 years as the regional director for State Mutual. He also retired from the position of assistant to the president of Berry College. He has owned business and sold them including Rome Aviation LLC. He refuses to slow down and continues to conduct flight reviews for pilots in training. He is also a published author and recording artist. “My book was a best cellar, as in I have a cellar full of them,” he laughs about his book, “How to Get a Raise or Promotion without Asking”. He has also recorded a comedic CD of personal stories titled “Never Repress Laughter, It Makes Your Hips Big!” Known as a jack-of-all-trades, Tillman has been recognized at the state, national and international levels for his dedication and prestige at various jobs and appointments. Ever the jokester, he claims that, “they simply ran out of people to honor those years.” It is easy to debunk this thought, however, because he is active in almost every arena one could imagine. He has also been heavily involved in local politics. He ran for the State House of Representatives in 1999 but lost. “I only lost because the other guy got more votes,” he quips as he explains what happened during his political career. Tillman has slowed down, but keeps on moving. He still flies three times (or more) a week from the Tillman Hangar at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport. He and his wife are still active with friends and family. He may have spent in inordinate amount of time in the air compared to most people, but it seems that on the way to becoming an expert at flying planes, he became an expert at living life, as well. He began soaring in 1956 and he has no plans on stopping anytime soon. 24
