With This Ring Greene's Jewelers THE DIAMOND has represented many things over the years. It is at the center of most wedding rings and adorns watches and jewelry of all types. Yes, a diamond is brilliant and is the most coveted of stones, but maybe the mystique of the stone has captivated the imagination more than its lustrous aesthetic. The ancient Greeks used the word “adamas” when referring to diamonds, meaning unbreakable, indestructible or unmovable. Diamonds have also represented purity and clarity throughout the ages, and have long been revered as a way to purify oneself. Other symbolic meanings behind this precious stone are faithfulness, love and endurance, and as a bringer of abundance and fulfillment. When used on a wedding ring the ancient Greek meaning of the word comes to convey an unspoken, unbreakable nature. It represents the unfaltering, infallible bond of love being forged as two people join in heart and mind. The professionals at Greene’s Jewelers (328 Broad Street, Rome) have been helping couples find the stone to perfectly express their

own unique love for almost 70 years. For some gentlemen, choosing the right ring can be just as hard as choosing the right person to spend the rest of thier life with. The staff at Greene's knows how daunting of a task this can seem, and they are ready to make it easy for the groom, step by step. By offering a custom ring design service to potential newlyweds, Joyce Manning, Tammy Kelley and staff will create a masterpiece as beautiful as the very love it commemorates and represents. Though diamonds are the norm for a wedding ring, Greene’s is happy to work with the couples they serve to find the right stone, which isn’t always a diamond. Custom design service is free and takes roughly a month from start to finish. The staff at Greene’s will guide every client through the process, ensuring the right setting is crafted for the stone the couple has chosen, be it diamond or otherwise. It is also great to know that Greene’s is able to work with any budget, ensuring that the bride-to-be sees the ring of her dreams when she opens the box for the first time.

Greene’s is a staple of Broad Street and Rome’s oldest jeweler, having been in Downtown Rome since 1948. It’s not uncommon for a new client to say, “My grandparents got their wedding rings at Greene’s.” As members of the American Gemological Society since 1970, they pride themselves on being a locally owned and operated jeweler. Their goal is that every client leaves feeling that they’ve been treated with integrity. Since Greene's is locally owned, they can maintain competitive prices because the “manager is always in.” They also are able to offer many services onsite because it is their “home office”. The Greene's staff offers not only the ring, but a full suite of gifts including pearls for the bridesmaids, or perhaps a watch for the groomsmen. Every member of the wedding party, including flower girls and ring bearers, can receive a special keepsake, making Greene’s a perfect place to save time and money in your busy schedule and budget. Accessories, such as cake toppers and knife sets to name a few, are also available. Gift wrap and engraving are free. The most important thing to the Greene’s staff is that every client leaves happy and confident in their purchase, and feel like they’ve truly received the personal touch that has made Greene’s successful for four generations.

Visit Greene's at 328 Broad Street in downtown Rome, find Greene’s online at greenesjewelers.com or call ahead for an appointment at 706.291.7236

Love Trains Perfect Dress of Rome AS THE MUSIC of the processional wavers through the air, all eyes are upon the bride as she takes her final steps of her journey towards the alter. The perfect dress she wears to commemorate the beauty of her perfect day, radiant with all the pure joy and potential the next chapter of her life holds in store and lovingly tailored to match her dreams. Perfect Dress of Rome (2013 Shorter Avenue, Rome) is where dreams come true for any bride-to-be. Alison Smith is in her 7th year as owner and operator of this full-service boutique. latest styles and designers available to choose from, and sizes for everyone from toddlers up to plus sizes, the perfect dress or tux is only an appointment away from reality (though walk-ins are accepted). “We often carry around 200 different styles of dresses and there are customization options available. That vastly widens the options a bride has when choosing her gown,” Smith explains. “We try to listen to what the bride wants, and start there. That’s why the consultation is so important because, oftentimes, it is through us listening to her vision that we find the perfect dress.” Custom gowns can take as many as 4-6 months to arrive. And for tuxes, in the event of a problem an overnight replace-

ment is offered to ensure the big day is a big hit. Smith remains plugged in to the rapidly changing trends in fashion, giving brides a look that is both timeless and current. This delicate balance is one that is achieved with the help of a professional who has dreamed of owning a bridal shop since she was a little princess herself. With brands like Essense of Australia and Mori Lee in her inventory, ladies can be sure that they will have access to fashion’s latest styles. Perfect Dress of Rome also offers a wide range of jewelry and accessories to accompany the gowns and dresses, as well as preservation services for after the ceremony. Gowns are cleaned, steamed and boxed to help cherish the perfect representation of a bride’s perfect day for years to come. When the big question gets answered, it raises many more, but Smith has the answers to at least a few of them. Stop by in person, call ahead or check out their website for more information or to schedule a consultation and say, “Yes” to Perfect Dress of Rome.

The Angels in the Details The Season Events IT WOULD BE hard to imagine working tirelessly and tending to the details on the most important day of your life, your wedding day. Most folks would probably be up before the sunrise, anxiously awaiting the moment that’s been so long in planning. The excitement is palpable, nervous smiles and jokes about cold feet are bandied about as the afternoon draws near. While many are only just rising for the daily cup of Joe, it’s a safe bet the wedding party is already busy.

10

v3 wedding compendium 2017

While the bridal party applies their makeup, and fusses with hair and gowns, the groom and his party are probably trying to kill the nerves before the big stroll. It helps to have a trustworthy hand, hurrying to place the last of the centerpieces, arrange the last few chairs or fire up the kitchen. For any large event, it falls on the shoulders of those involved to make sure it goes off without a hitch (or with one in this case). Bringing together the dreams of the newlyweds, and crafting them into a reality, can be massive undertaking. Mak-

ing wedding arrangements is often a herculean labor of love for both family and friends, and Holly Lynch of The Season Events (300 Glenn Milner Blvd., Rome) works hard to help ease the pressure and allow friends and loved ones more time to enjoy the big day. Lynch, co-owner and founder, works closely with business partner Ray Harris and the team to treat every event as if it were their own wedding. “We are very family-oriented as a staff, and we aim to treat our clients as an extension of our family. We want them, at the end of the day, to feel incredibly loved throughout the event and through our service,” says Lynch.

Lynch got her start in corporate event planning, and opened The Season Events is 2007. Her aim is to help reflect the joy and happiness of an event through its surroundings and the caring preparations. “We meet with our clients a lot, maybe too much,” Lynch jokes, “because we want to know all the ins and outs, the special circumstances and the priorities. Knowing every detail of what will make the day special for the bride, the groom, and the family ensures we can make it happen.” With all the possibilities and choices to be made, finding the right inspiration for an event can be mind boggling. With choice of venue, décor and lighting, color schemes and more to be decided upon, the first step for Lynch is to find out what a couple and their loved ones really

want from on big day. “My first question usually is, ‘tell me what you imagine, tell me what you see, and tell me what you think this day is going to look like,’” Lynch says. More often than not, the bride has spent much more time thinking about how she will look on the big day rather than the menu or the adornments of the venue. By asking about the vision for the day, a unifying theme or inspiration is usually rooted out to direct the overall landscape of the event. Ray Harris (A.K.A the food genius) typically handles catering for events planned by The Season Events, and tries to challenge the stereotypes of lukewarm food. By bringing the kitchen to the venue, they make the dining experience much more interactive for the guests and wedding

t he pl anner

party members alike. Gone are the limitations of buffet warmers and menu restrictions, and waltzing in are options like freshly fried green tomatoes or tenderloins still hot off the grill. With a one-stop-shop appeal Lynch, Harris and team have notched up hundreds of success stories since their inception in 2007. Driven by the joyful reactions and tears of happiness they have witnessed through the years, The Season Events aims to continue providing friends and family with a less stressful and more joyful wedding experience, inspired by dreams of the bride and groom to be.

High-End Cuisine La Scala

WITH ANY EVENT, the highlight of the night is usually spent around the table sharing a meal. For weddings, this occasion takes on a whole new meaning. After the happy couple says their vows, they celebrate with family, friends and especially, food. For above-and-beyond service, look no further than the people at La Scala Mediterranean Bistro (413 Broad Street, Rome) to make this experience as memorable as possible. La Scala has been catering weddings for seven years, allowing owner Anthony Barba and company time to hone their skills and execute weddings beautifully and efficiently. “We like weddings,” Barba says. “We do anywhere from 12 to 18 weddings a year, and 20 to 24 rehearsal dinners a year.” Though La Scala is primarily known as an Italian and Mediterranean restaurant, Barba and his team have more than chicken parmesan up their sleeves. Everything from their surf to their turf is fresh and top-of-the-line. As for variety, they’ve roasted entire pigs, prepared Low Country Boils and cooked two 30-pound groupers. According to Barba, “No cuisine is off the table because when it comes to our catering side, we do it all.” With seemingly limitless options, Barba and his team offer private tastings to brides, grooms and their parents. For those looking for a more intimate experience, La Scala also offers an InHouse Chef Dinner. “We come in and make a full meal from

scratch at your house with service” he says. “It’s fun. People get to muck around in the kitchen, watch what you’re doing, and enjoy it.” La Scala has more to offer than quality food. Thanks to building owners Gregg and Diane Lewis, they now have an event space that is sure to charm any wedding guest. The lower level features rich, exposed brick, a fully stocked kitchen, and a lounge area overlooking Broad Street. Up one more flight of stairs is a bright, open space with floor-to-ceiling windows, a rooftop terrace and a beautiful view of Down-

t he rehear sal d i n n e r town Rome. Though the terrace is reserved for groups of about 20, La Scala can host up to 350 guests in the reception hall. Moreover, La Scala can outfit these spaces themselves. “We own all the tables, all the chairs, the silver, the plates, linens…” Barba says, and the list goes on. “That’s something we can offer as a savings for the customer.” It is also comforting to know that La Scala’s catering staff also cleans up after an event, often leaving the space in better condition than when they arrived. For Barba, the service does not stop after the tables have been set and your family and friends are full of mouth-watering food. Regarding savings, Barba works with any budget, small or large. “It’s my goal to look at your budget and say, ‘okay, this is what we can realistically do.’ I’ll maximize it; that’s my job.” La Scala will cater within 30 miles for large weddings, but Barba says the team has travelled over an hour for smaller, more intimate gatherings. For couples interested in booking La Scala for their wedding, Barba recommends calling as soon as you have a

date, giving his team plenty of time to dedicate to their wedding. “When it comes to doing events, it’s the details that make a difference, leaving you comfortable and confident that the job will be done.”

t he venue

SINCE ITS OPENING in 1994, Forum River Center, formerly known as Forum Civic Center, has been providing a unique venue alternative to modern brides in Rome, Georgia. Now, touting a new name, branding and fresh remodels, Forum River Center is readying themselves for the wedding seasons to come. “We were fortunate to work with a construction and design firm to assist with the venue renovations. The River Walk Ballroom is a must see. The carpet is new, the walls are painted, ceiling has been raised,” sales manager Thomas Kislat says, “We’re like brand new and we’re ready to offer this beautiful space to the public.” The new River Walk Ballroom has been remodeled with light, neutral colors that would fit any wedding color scheme. Function meets fashion with new lighting and enhancements, giving this space a fresh, inviting and transitional feel. The new carpet is a collection of contemporary, organic elements juxtaposed with soft geometrics creating a nice balance between masculine and feminine design. The floor-to-ceiling windows

have new double-paneled drapery that adorn the room. The ballroom overlooks the Oostanaula River with views of the Appalachian foothills and a new lighted awning just outside of the ballroom allows extra space for wedding guests to mingle. The renovated 6,000-square-foot grand ballroom provides space for up to 350 people for a reception. Forum River Center offers surrounding outdoor spaces that can be converted into charming ceremony and pre-function areas. Rotary Plaza sits riverside and has a raised concrete structure, perfect for an arch or alter with ample seating surrounding. Bridge View Terrace sits at the foot of the Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge and by adding highboy tables, linens and light decor, this space makes a perfect cocktail area. Even the arena

can be transformed into a gorgeous ballroom. “It’s an area that’s very flexible,” general manager Brent Poplin says. “The arena will have six chandeliers and when using 16’ pipe and drape, a whole different ambiance can be created for large events seating up to 1,000 guests.” Of all the upgrades, Forum River Center is most proud of the technological advancements. “One of the things that we are doing across the board is updating the technology systems,” Poplin says. “Wayfinding monitors can provide up-to-date information about what’s happening. Also, in the arena, 12’ x 16’ video curtains have been installed. In the ballroom, we can drop screens out of the ceiling to showcase any kind of video or slideshow. We have found that wedding couples love to show videos during their ceremony or reception and we are happy to offer this technology in many different areas of the venue.” “We have public Wi-Fi all over the venue so guests can access the internet easily,” Kislat adds. “When the bride and groom kiss or cut the cake, or groom acts out a special performance, guests can stream it live to share with those who could not attend. We have it all.” In the future, Forum River Center plans to upgrade dressing rooms, as well as, expand their services to include catering. A liquor license was recently acquired to sell and serve alcohol. A solid list of preferred vendors can be recommended to clients to assist with creating their dream wedding. “We have a great relationship with our external vendors,” Kislat says. “Catering, A/V, florists, we’ve established them over the past 20 to 25 years and they’re now a phone call away.” For brides and grooms interested in working with Forum River Center, Poplin suggests touring the venue soon after getting engaged to secure the space. “We are positioning Forum River Center as a premier wedding venue in Northwest Georgia and not only do we have this beautiful venue to offer, but we believe our staff is equipped and ready to assist our clients every step of the way. Our goal is to be more than a wedding venue, but instead play a personal role in creating a memory that will last a lifetime. We meticulously plan every wedding as if it were our own and take pride in every reception that we host.”

Perfect Plates Runnin' Wild Catering FEW THINGS CAN top celebrating the union of two houses, so a special occasion like this calls for a great meal. Runnin’ Wild Catering (217 West Elm Street, Rockmart) has some culinary tricks up their sleeves that have left a lasting impression on wedding parties in Polk County and the neighboring counties they serve. “We customize most of our menus to fit what the wedding party requests,” says Eric Tant, manager for the catering team at Runnin’ Wild, “so we are able to offer a wide range of options for the big day.” Menu options include everything from sushi, to more traditional Southern cuisine like slow-cooked beef and two veggies. Executive Chef, Andy Miller, and his crew have access to fresh seafood, prime cuts of Certified Angus Beef and a host of local gardeners, so the food that they serve is always high-quality. From picnic-style hotdog receptions to high-end steak dinners, Runnin’ Wild Catering can meet any menu demand. “Booking ahead of time allows us time to locate any specialty items we would need to prepare the food couples would like to see on the plates at their wedding. So, we advise clients to book us at 20

v3 wedding compendium 2017

least 3-6 months out for the best results,” Miller explains. “That way, we can really design a menu that is unique to your wedding and something that your guests will never forget.” The already-popular Knucklehead Café is where this team perfects dishes they are preparing to serve, but make no mistake. Runnin’ Wild takes their same approach to great food on the road, as this operation is completely mobile. And because of this feature they offer, brides and grooms can be confident knowing that they won’t need to track down supplies for their guests on the day they say, “I do.”

We find out everything the families want during our consultation,” says Tant, “and this gives us a good idea of what we will need to bring. We can serve buffet-style dinners or plated meals; it is totally up to what you want to see for your dinner.” “Our plated dinners are where we really shine,” adds Miller. “With a five-star approach, we are able to really add those special touches we have become known for.” With the resources to handle 20 to 2000 guests, Runnin’ Wild Catering has everything needed to facilitate a smooth dining experience on the day you exchange rings. “All you have to do is show up and enjoy the meal. That’s our job and most of our clients have come from attending a wedding where we catered the food,” Tant smiles. “We handle all of the plates, flatware and linens, taking all the extra things off your to-do list when planning for a wedding.” “There are five characteristics we use when setting up for a catering job and they are taste, texture, temperature, aroma and presentation,” Tant continues. “So, we work to cover all the bases when we present our food. Most people eat with their eyes and noses first, so the attention to the details is what we do to set our team apart from other caterers. And with 10-15 staff available for service, depending on the size of the party, you can be secure in knowing that top-notch service is what we focus on as well.” If finding food and service that is above the norm is on your list, look no further than the Runnin’ Wild Catering team. Nothing caps off a walk down the aisle like a plate of world-class food.

You've Got the Look Stella Blu Cosmetics

WHEN THINKING OF high-end cosmetics, big city department stores come to mind. Lucky for us, there is a boutique - not on Rodeo Drive or 5th Avenue - that offers the industry’s top brands right here in Downtown Rome. Stella Blu (200 Broad Street, Rome) is a cosmetics hub for ladies who want to look fantastic on their wedding day. And because looking great is their business, there is no place better for brides to fashion their dreams. Tiffany Barnes, owner of this popular downtown mainstay, has a few things brides should consider when choosing a make-up artist and saying, “I do.” “At Stella Blu, we have trained professionals on staff who know what works for weddings. We pride ourselves in finding the right balance of products that fit your desired look,” Barnes says. Many brides never consider the photos when choosing products they will wear in pictures capturing timeless memories. “Brands like Smashbox are specifically designed to hold up under the intense lights of photography,” Barnes explains, “and this is one of the products we use to help you look your best in photos. We also recommend that our brides come in for a consultation, so 24

v3 wedding compendium 2017

that we can find out what application works with their vision. Then, they can wear the make-up all day, while at work or out running errands, to see how it holds up. These factors are an important part of the feedback we need to make notes and be sure you have no worries on the day you get married.” This trendy studio not only offers services for the bride, but for the entire bridal party as well. “The ladies can come in on the day of the wedding and have coffee while we apply the make-up we planned for during the consulta-

tion,” Barnes says with a smile. “We want to make this day as stress-free and as beautiful as what you’ve dreamed about since you were a little girl. Part of looking great is feeling great, and we want to make this special time in your life exciting and fun.” Stella Blu does not just offer cosmetic services. A full-service salon and blow-dry bar, waxing, brows and even the application of false lashes ensures that they cover every look from simple chic to runway-ready glam. Perhaps what is most unique about this boutique is the Southern charm paired with high-end cosmetics. Each client is special to the staff of Stella Blu, and brides usually make them their go-to professionals for all things beauty related. “At Stella Blu, we take the time to find out what you want and what you think makes you beautiful. We are here to guide you and provide professional advice, but the most important part of what we do is listen to our clients,” says Barnes. “If you feel good about how you look, then nothing is as beautiful as a confident woman. So, by adding a

salon to what we offer, we can be sure that what you see in your wedding photos is seamless. We want you to look back at the pictures and be pleased for a lifetime.”

Frame to Fame Cameron Flaisch Photography EVERY COUPLE’S IDEAL wedding is nothing short of perfection, but when the celebration has come to a close and the knot is tied, all that’s left are the vows, the memories and the photographs from that special day. When you and your significant other are deciding on a wedding photographer, if your ideal photographer is adventurous, witty and treats every shoot as an experiment to capture the unique characteristics of you and your partner, Cameron Flaisch, owner of Cameron Flaisch Photography, is your guy. Flaisch’s passion for photography was sparked while on a family vacation to Barbados when his 26

v3 wedding compendium 2017

father purchased an underwater-windup camera. Fast forward to the summer of 2007 when Flaisch relocated to Rome, he began taking automotive photos for online forums based in Atlanta. It wasn’t too much longer that the other users on the forums recognized Flaisch’s eye for photography. “People started contacting me to come and shoot their cars, and from there, those clients started asking, ‘Hey, do you do family photos?’ or, ‘Do you do portraits…my daughter needs senior photos, will you do that?’ And that eventually led to me building a client list for weddings,” recalls Flaisch.

And it is weddings where Flaisch found his knack for photography. An activity that initially began as a service to friends who couldn’t afford a wedding photographer turned into a passionate career endeavor and business for Cameron Flaisch. “The mix of emotions that you see throughout that entire day is what draws me in,” explains Flaisch, “You get to view the different levels of connection that they have - which is what drew me in.” Flaisch’s eye for lighting and angles, use of vibrant colors and love for adventure are just a few characteristics that make his service s unique. “Not to be cliché, but every photo should tell a story, and if you can look at a photo and see right away what’s going on, I don’t think the photographer took the best photos he or she could have taken,” explains Flaisch, “I want the shot where half of my photos might be an entire picture that is 90 percent sky, and the couple is tiny in the corner, that kind of picture that just really draws you in to like, ‘Hey, what exactly am I looking at?” From North Carolina to Washington, Michigan, Toronto, Florida, Alabama, Colorado and, of course, Georgia, Flaisch loves to incorporate travel while doing what he does best. However, while he loves travel, Flaisch doesn’t only cover mountainous adventures at national parks. “Everything from the adventurous people to the city slickers,” says Flaisch, “I love downtown settings too, especially during the daytime when you get all of those crazy shadows everywhere. The personalities of the couples I shoot mean more to me than the style of wedding they are having.” Likewise, among a long list of great clients including, most recently, David Andrews of the New England Patriots and his bride, Mackenzie, his favorite clientele are the personalities who are willing to step out of their comfort zone to create an unorthodox photo shoot to capture timeless memories. “I just want weird couples… I want the people that are okay with shooting outside of the box… odds are, if there’s something you can climb or I can climb, we’re going to,” notes Flaisch, “I literally wear a harness to hold my camera so it frees up my hands to where if there’s an angle that I want, I can get to it.”

t he D IY LIKE MANY COUPLES, Justin and Hannah Nofal wanted a wedding that spoke to their relationship. Though the two met and lived in Chicago for a few years, Hannah wanted to return to Rome, her hometown, to begin their lives together. The couple knew they wanted an autumn wedding to avoid the Southern summer heat (and dances with sweaty groomsmen), but none of the venues had the unique beauty they were looking for. “We wanted a Bohemian, whimsical sort of scene,” Hannah says of their plans. “We looked everywhere in Rome, and everywhere we went, we thought, nothing feels right – or is as pretty – as Mom’s house.” “It looks like a bed and breakfast, tucked in the woods with a pond in front,” Justin says. “With the waterfall across the street and another huge pond, it’s the most beautiful, serene place you’ll ever see. It looks like something out of ‘Lord of the Rings.’” With this in mind, Justin and Hannah finally turned to Hannah’s mom, Carol Pearson, with a question that would cause a whirlwind of planning and activity for the entire family. “I proposed to Hannah on September 3rd, so we had about 14 months to figure it out,” Justin recalls. “Around the 13 or 12-month mark, we decided that we’re going to have our wedding at Mama Carol’s house.” “I kind of went into shock,” Carol says, but knowing what Hannah and Justin wanted, and knowing she couldn’t just be another motherof-the-bride, Carol became a self-described ring

leader and took the responsibility of planning the wedding in her hands. Of course, it takes more than one person to plan a wedding. Justin conveniently works in event planning, so he was charged with manning the Excel spreadsheets. Hannah had an image of what they wanted, so with her input, Carol turned to friends make her dream a reality. After hearing Hannah was planning to have her wedding at the Pearsons’ home, Carol’s friends questioned her sanity. “We had plenty of people ask, ‘Why on earth does she want to get married at your house?’ They hadn’t been out there, but once they had, it clicked,” says Carol. Thus, a year-long journey of preparation began. Carol enlisted the help of her husband, Johnny Pearson, who made the bar, tables, teepee and photo booth, and strung lights around the back-

yard. Friends at Harvest Moon catered the event and local performer and friend Scott Thompson lent his talents to provide music for the evening. As for Carol, she brought all the pieces together. “I started collecting” Carol says. “I collected or harvested everything. For their flowers, I grew hydrangeas. I learned how to dry them. I collected the Pendleton blankets that were used for the tables. There were quilts of my grandmother’s hanging behind the band. We made the invitations, we made the RSVP cards, made the halos; there’s not a lot we didn’t do.” Like every wedding, things didn’t always go as planned. “I don’t know if we should mention this,” says Hannah to her mom, “But you were the cause of the drought.” “I did cause the drought,” Carol confesses. “We buried a bottle of bourbon, upside down, a month before the ceremony.” “It’s a tradition, if you do that, then it won’t rain on your wedding day,” Hannah adds. “You dig it up on the wedding day and toast the fact that you have a beautiful wedding day,” Carol says. “It worked!”

“Yeah,” Justin laughs. “It was the worst drought in Georgia in the last 40 years!” Drought aside, friends and family from near and far gathered to lend a hand. Days before the wedding, bridesmaids and groomsmen were in Rome setting up tables, hanging decorations, making boutonnieres and more. When the day arrived, everyone’s efforts came together to create a warm and welcoming wedding garden that paid homage to fond camp memories and Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom.” The pond in front of the house reflected the red and gold foliage of the surrounding woods. The backyard was clad in rugs, quilts and string lights, turning the large yard into a cozy space for Hannah and Justin’s 130 guests. One of Carol’s best friends became the mixologist and formulated a fall sangria that would be talked about for days after the wedding. A bit of Justin’s hometown made it to Rome as well in the form of food. “Justin is actually from Kansas City so we wanted to focus on the brisket and the barbeque,” Carol says. “Yeah, she ordered barbeque sauce all the way from Kansas City,” Justin adds with a smile, still stunned by Carol’s attention to detail. Looking back, neither Carol, Hannah nor Justin could think of anything they would have done differently. “Not only did mom have her hands in it to add her personal touch, but all our really close friends and family had contributed in some sort of way, too,” Hannah says. “It just made it feel like we were all hanging out as a family, not setting up for a wedding.” “We all worked together like a well-oiled machine. There was a sense of community and unity,” Carol says. “It was a labor of love, but when it comes to doing a wedding yourself, I would recommend anybody trying it.” “Even thinking about the financial part of it.You could have all the money in the world, but you can’t replace that,” Justin says. “It was priceless.” For those thinking about having their own DIY wedding, Hannah’s advice is short and simple: Do it. “I know people might not be as fortunate as I am, that my parents have amazing property and things like that, but having that personal touch and having friends and families really put their heart and soul into your special day is just the best thing that we could ever imagine. It’s the best gift that we ever could have gotten.”
