I’m getting fed up! Carletonville is becoming a gangster’s paradise! Armed robberies, burglary, theft, gangs. Where are our community leaders? Police? What are you going to do about the situation? Safety is a human and constitutional right. Protect us! Jy was ‘n goeie ouderling, altyd op datum. Ceciel. Nuwe take away by Dive-in-Cafe. To the reader who thinks Mmes Rebello and Isherwood are doing nothing about the problems in Carletonville. You seem to blame them. I agree with you, “your” ANC council is pathetic. If the DA were at the helm

you would see something positive happening in Carletonville! Their powers are curtailed by the governing council my friend! Well done again Councillors Rebello, Isherwood and Venter from the DA in attempting to get something constructive done while your opposition remains complacent! Sterkte Henna. X5 se nonsens is Madame Wadela hopies se probleem, maar niemand doen iets aan haar. something for your monthly payments, or is that too much to ask for? “Councillor Rebelo does nothing”! Whoever made that statement is utterly clueless of what this gentleman does to address ongoing issues, almost on a 24/7 basis! I will wager he does more in this regard than all the other councillors combined! Merafong City julle diens is pateties. Trek hele totaal af by een rekening.

Kan iemand my se by wie kan jy gaan kla. Lyk my die hele Merafong City val uitmekaar! Pateties verby! Kom net by asb. G.P. Ek wil net graag weet hoe kan ‘n kind geld van sy ouers steel nadat sy ouers die bes gedoen het om hule n goeie lewe te gee. Dit maak baie seer my kind jy kon vir hulp kom vra het en as ons kon sou ons gehelp het. Our President claims innocent as to the building done at Nkandla. How then can he now be trusted to rule our country? Sad to see there’s no respect for road rules in carltonville . People don’t stop at stops and the one way in taxi rank gets used as a normal road , even by police & municipality vehicles ,G4 security , taxis exct. I do deliveries there and get sworn at for obeying the law.

You can’t put a price on togetherness Kagiso Segone Some of the world’s greatest books urge us to be united and, in my opinion, unity is most important in our world today. Unity could render much progress for us as a people, but unnecessary conflict inhibits us from achieving this. Why is it that we still seem to be in a mental struggle to accept one another? It is a big stumbling block for all of us as Africans, regardless of race or colour. Togetherness is priceless, yet we are separated by our differences. Our personal issues provoke division. When one considers the Xenophobic attacks that happened last year and is maybe, in contrary to what we might believe - far from over, it proves that

we are nothing but divided. It reeks of indifference. We have never been taught tolerance and we are bombarded with violent programmes on television every day. No wonder we have turned against each other! Why do the media promote the negative? Why do turmoil and tragedy receive so much exposure? I wish there were as many educational programmes as there are commercials for alcohol - which is actually the cause of much grief in many households. We need to create some level of awareness within our community because ignorance brings suffering. Not everything has been concealed within the lines of text in a book. Some things can be seen clearly, even with the naked eye. One of these is that we

are moving backwards because we are not united. On top of that, we are not even willing to move towards unity. That is a big problem for us - both now and in the future. I think we first need to rediscover what life is all about, and then we will realise what we have to do. For me, life is about togetherness. No one was born to be alone - that is why we are all here. The unity of mankind is a beautiful prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled. This is not just someone’s dream, it is the way it was supposed to be. As long as the world is torn apart with hatred, humanity will never experience the shining glory of love in its highest form. We need to fulfil that prophesy. Young men and women of this age need to reconsider their divine purpose

and redirect their cause to uniting the world. We have moved into globalisation, and we must therefore be a globe, united. Then, and only then, will we be able to solve the problems of the world.

On my mind - Let us all learn to forgive each other Sipho Mashaba Learning to forgive others and yourself is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your offender. Letting go and releasing the emotional pain of the past is not always easy, but it is so worth it. What is often surprising to the forgiver, is that the power of forgiveness lies not only in its ability to heal relationships but also, to heal yourself. Why is forgiving so difficult? Learning to forgive is the easy part. Actually doing it is quite another story. Part of the reason is that our brains are wired to protect us. We hold on to traumatic me-

mories and resentments as a survival mechanism. It is how humanity has been able to survive. Those who could sense danger and flee survived to reproduce another generation. We learn from our mistakes. We punish ourselves for our mistakes so we do not repeat them. Depending on your definition of forgiveness, you may feel that you are better off holding onto your hurt and resentment rather

than to risk being hurt again. Your culture probably has strong teachings about when, how and who to forgive. Or, sometimes perhaps you feel you deserve retribution or punishment. It feels safer to hold on than to let go. To add to the confusion, our thoughts and actions around forgiveness are often contradictory. We may long for it, but would sometimes rather suffer, with guilt and fear than ask for it. Another question is, ‘What if you do not forgive?’

Just like any spiritual practice, learning to forgive is a choice. Like all choices, there are consequences, positive and negative, that follow. Choosing to hold on to hurts from the past and all its accompanying bitterness, resentment, guilt, blame and pain may create an illusion of personal safety, but the cost to your physical, mental, relational and spiritual well-being is great. In short, let us learn to forgive those who have hurt us in the past. It may be difficult to do so, but it is for our own good. “Life is too short to hold grudges,” may sound like a cliché but it is true and we all should learn to forgive others.

Mother and child found dead Kagiso Segone A mother and child were found dead in their bed at Sonderwater informal settlement in Khutsong at around 10:00 on 21 June. A relative of the victim who refused to be identified, informed the Herald that she had been alerted by a whistle which had been blown repeatedly. This is the way community members communicate when there is an unusual event occurring at the settlements. They were told to go and investigate what was happening at the shack where the victim lives with her partner. When they got there, they found the lifeless bodies of the victim and her one-month-old baby boy, lying in the bed. The family later found out that the woman’s partner had discovered the bodies some time earlier, after returning home from a drinking spree early in the morning. The victim had allegedly chased him away when he first arrived late at night. He made the shocking discovery when he returned for the second time. The police are investigating allegati-

ons that her death may be related to domestic violence and that the baby may have died of the cold. Neighbours reported that they had previously heard the

couple quarrelling about the woman’s drinking habits that often resulted in her neglecting the child and disappearing for periods of time. The victim has

been identified as Ntombozuko Mayeye (30) and was, despite what had been said by neighbours, described by family members as “a good and loving person”.

Man found dead after four days Kagiso Segone The body of a man was discovered in a shack in Sonderwater informal settlements on 20 June, four days after his bloody death. The sister of the deceased, Matisetso Licela, identified the man as Mpumelelelo Nicholas Skisazana who was last seen on Thursday. He usually sat outside his shack and, after no one had seen him for days, neighbours grew concerned. Man murdered in front of wife Kagiso Segone A man was murdered in front of his wife at Wedela Ext.3 on Sunday, 5 July. Siyabulela Vimba was reportedly walking near Doris Tavern with his wife when they were approached by a youth. The suspect deliberately started provoking the husband, obviously looking for a confrontation. He said he wanted to be the woman’s younger lover. While Vimba’s wife’s response was cool and calm - that she is not interested in younger menhe lost his temper and lashed out at the aggressor, unaware that he was carrying a knife. According to the police report, the suspect drew his knife and stabbed the victim in the chest three times. Vimba later died in hospital. The 22year-old suspect was arrested and a case of murder has been opened.

found the door to his shack was unlocked. They found the body in the bed with blood all over his hands, his clothes and his mattress. His body was bloated and in an advanced state of decomposition. The skin on his back was also peeling off. The cause of the man’s death is still unknown and the family is waiting for the post mortem. He will be buried on Thursday at Ext.4 graveyard.

Amalgamation meeting draws hundreds Adele Louw The meeting that was held to discuss Merafong’s proposed amalgamation into a bigger West Rand metro drew a large crowd with diverse opinions on the matter. The Carletonville Civic Centre was packed on Friday with people who wanted to know more about the proposal or to make their opinions heard. The plan is to create a so-called ‘Category A’ municipality for the whole of the West Rand District Municipality with Mogale City at its core. So many people attended the event that extra chairs had to be brought in. A member of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB), Ms Mpumi Mpofu, led the proceedings. She explained that, although a previous action to redetermine municipal boundaries was closed by the MDB in 2013, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan, used his powers in terms of certain legislation to request the MDB to once again look at the possible redetermination before the 2016 local government elections. She also assured that the MDB would consider all the inputs given during the meeting against the relevant legislation, and decide whether or not to re-determine the boundaries. Should the MDB decide that the demarcation will go ahead, a notice will be published in the Provincial Gazette, and a period of 30 days would be allowed for the public to object. “After the 30-days’ objection peri-

to the development of the area. Those against, highlighted real issues such as accountability, when officials and politicians are much further removed from the communities they serve. They also argued that the amalgamation could make it difficult for residents with problems to reach the relevant officials. They also foresaw that municipal services would become much more expensive, postamalgamation. Speaking on behalf of the Merafong City’s Council, the chief whip, Mr Happy Lwana said no opposition parties had objected to the proposal during the previous two occasions that the issue was raised in Merafong - in 2012 and in February this year. “Council has already committed funds to ensuring the amalgamation. The other political parties in Council cannot suddenly claim to be against it,” he told the Herald. “There was a good turnout at the meeting and it is good that more residents are now getting involved. We will just have to wait and see what is going to happen,” Ms Ina Cilliers, the DA’s constituency head for Merafong and a representative for this part on the Provincial Government, told the Herald after the meeting. “We are not happy with the proposed amalgamation as no one in Merafong can afford the costs that such an amalgamation will bring. They will first have to develop Merafong before such an amalgamation can take place. The community is angry that we might be amalgamated,” indicated Mr Themba Wisani of the Merafong Progressive Partnership Forum.

Readers have their say

‘Ek kry skaam vir my dorp’ Inwoner van Carletonville skryf:

Our future is in our hands Whether or not Merafong will form part of a larger metro in future, is in the hands of residents. On Friday, the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) held an official public meeting to hear whether Merafong residents want our municipal area to be amalgamated into a much bigger metro. Some residents said they did not want to be part of a metro for a number of reasons. They say it could diminish the accountability of politicians and officials because they will now be much further from the communities they serve. Others indicated that they want the metro plans to proceed. The reason most often given for wanting this to happen is that they believe that it will lead to more development. During the information session held by the MDB as part of the event, it assured that, should it decide to have an amalgamation promulgated, residents would have one last

opportunity to make their voices heard against such a decision. But, it is uncertain what impact such late voices will have in the whole process. Whatever the decision on Merafong’s future, it will be difficult to reverse once it is made and residents can be sure that they will be in for some changes if it goes ahead. While some changes will no doubt be good, others could well turn out differently from what was envisioned. In one story in this week’s Herald, for instance, a local businessman pointed out that the reconnection fee for households whose electricity has been suspended, is about eight times more expensive in Mogale City that in Merafong. Only time will tell how such administrative discrepancies will be dealt with if both municipalities form part of the same metro. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Merafong, and how any changes might affect the lives of residents.

Ek gebruik Stasiestraat elke dag. Ek kry skaam vir my liewe dorp.

Praying moves your soul toward God BibleStudyPlanet Our Lord Jesus declared that “men ought always to pray and not faint,” and the parable in which His words occur was taught with the intention of saving men from faint-heartedness and weakness in prayer. Our Lord was seeking to teach that laxity must be guarded against, and persistence encouraged. There can be no two opinions regarding the importance of the exercise of this indispensable quality in our praying. Persistent prayer is a mighty movement of the soul toward God. It is a stirring of the deepest forces of the soul, toward the throne of heavenly grace. It is the ability to hold on, press on and wait. Restless desire, restful patience, and strength of grasp are all

embraced in it. It is not an incident or a performance, but a passion of the soul. It is not a want, half-needed, but a sheer necessity. The wrestling quality in persistent prayers does not spring from physical vehemence or fleshly energy. It is not an impulse of energy, not a mere earnestness of soul; it is a force, a faculty implanted and aroused by the Holy Spirit. Virtually, it is the intercession of the Spirit of God, in us; it is, moreover, “the effectual, fervent prayer, which availeth much.” Nothing distinguishes the children of God so clearly and strongly as prayer. It is the one infallible mark and test of being a Christian. Christian people are prayerful, the worldly-minded, prayerless. Christians call on God; worldlings ignore God and call not on

His Name. But even the Christian needs to cultivate continual prayer. Prayer must be habitual, but much more than a habit. It is a duty, yet one which rises far above, and goes beyond the ordinary implications of the term. It is the expression of a relation to God, a yearning for divine communion. It is the outward and upward flow of the inward life toward its original fountain. It is an assertion of the soul’s paternity, a claiming of the sonship, which links man to the eternal. Prayer has everything to do with moulding the soul into the image of God; enhancing and enlarging the measure of divine grace and bringing the soul into complete communion with God. It has everything to do with enriching, broadening and

maturing the soul’s experience of God. The man who does not pray cannot possibly be called a Christian.

Raw sewage swamps streets Adele Louw Flooded streets and yards, and the sickening stench of sewage hanging thick in the houses. These are some of the problems that residents of Khutsong Extension 4 have to deal with. When the Herald’s journalist went with Mr Peter Muedi from house No. 363 in Extension 4 last Thursday, she had to park four houses away from his yard because the whole street had literally turned into a cesspool. Not only is there so much sewage that residents of more than 10 houses cannot access their homes, either by foot or vehicle, several of the yards are filled with sewage as well. At the time of the Herald’s visit, the situation had become so bad that neighbours, such as Muedi’s wife, Victoria, and their next door neighbour, Ms Dolly Sebenane, had to yell at each over a five-foot wide trench filled with sewage every time they want to communicate. “The problem has become so bad that there are elderly people here who cannot even get out to fetch their medication,” Mr Muedi told the Herald. He says the problems started shortly after he and his family moved into their house in 1999. As the house is

in one of the lowest-lying areas of Extension 4, whenever there are sewage problems elsewhere, the manhole in his yard overflows badly. Even stormwater dams up in his yard. Since then, says the community, sewage or water problems have almost become a monthly occurrence. They have become so bad that the Muedi family has had to elevate their front door entrance so that storm water does not flood the house during heavy rains. Mr Muedi has to leave his car at friends because the sewage lies so deep that he cannot drive through it to get to the house. When the Herald visited, the Muedis’ next-door neighbour had not been seen for several days and locals suspect that he fled for a few days to get away from the sewage surrounding his house. The massive volumes of sewage have already had an impact on the health of residents in the area, especially children. “Our 15-year-old boy was diagnosed with Hepatitis A in December last year. When I asked how he could have contracted the disease, the nurses told me that, one way or another, he had to have ingested raw sewage that was contaminated.

A dam of sewage has occupied what used to be the road running past the Muedi family's home.

“The conditions we are living in at the moment can be the only cause of him contracting the disease,” Mrs Muedi told the Herald. “We are going to get respiratory illnesses if the problems are not attended to,” Sebenane added. Mr Muedi went to the municipality every day for four days to report the recent problems. During this time, he was sent back and forth between officials, none of whom was able to assist.

In the past, the ward councillor, Mr Mogomotsi Sello, also visited the area after being contacted about the problems. In spite of him reporting it, nothing was done to solve the problems. According to Mr Muedi, he has asked the municipality whether he and his family could not be moved to another house because of the ongoing problems. “We just cannot continue to live like this,” he lamented.

Police find wheels, poison in taxi Kagiso Segone The SAPS Carletonville cluster recently made a total of 54 arrests in connection with various crimes. Four of the suspects were apprehended for theft from a vehicle. Carletonville CID members, Sgt. Mongalane and his partner spotted a suspicious white Quantum that was stopped and searched. Three wheels were found in the taxi. On further inspection, they also found mince meat and poison that is believed to have been intended to kill dogs during break-ins. This assumption is supported by the recent trend of dog poisonings around Carletonville. Police have identified the poison as Aldicarb.

Robbers hold up couple with screwdriver, knitting needle Kagiso Segone A couple was surprised by robbers in their home in Oberholzer in broad daylight on 8 July. The two intruders gained access to the home in Bergbos Street through the TV room at about 13:10. They grabbed the male victim and threatened him with a screwdriver when his wife attempted to push the panic button. The other suspect grabbed her, too, and threatened to stab her with a knitting needle. The suspects, who spoke English well, tied the victims up and stuffed clothing into their mouths. They later fled with items of jewellery, a Blackberry Curve cell phone and money. Both suspects were wearing gloves, black trousers and black windbreakers. A case of house robbery was opened and the police are looking for any information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Firearms confiscated, suspect arrested Kagiso Segone A suspect was arrested after firearms were found in his possession in Magaliesburg Street, Carletonville on 11 July. Investigating a case of assault, police swooped on the property and discovered illegal rifles and a pistol. The house was allegedly in the process of

being sold to a neighbour when there was a dispute about payments. The firearms were identified as Brno Army issue - a .22 LR and a .223 rifle with a telescope and a 9mm Norinco pistol. They were apparently sold to the suspect for an amount of R5 000. The suspect was charged with the illegal possession of firearms and RR ammunition.
