VANDERBIJLPARK. - “I want everyone to come to the party to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have the capability, potential and the skills to take the station to the next level.” Vanderbijlpark Station Commander Brigadier Sam Manala wants especially women in blue to receive merit awards. “Female officers are responding well although with slow pace. Since I took office, everyone has adapted well to operations.” Brig Manala handed certificates to Detectives and Constables who put in tremendous efforts to achieve successful arrests. The quarterly awards were conducted in his office on September 30.

Addressing the recent national police crime statistics 2015/16, Manala said there’s more to be done. “We need to improve drastically if we want to become the watchdog of the nation.” He congratulated his team, which caught eight suspects red-handed with a truck and stock valued at R8 million in NW7 Industrial on September 20. The truck was hijacked in Germiston. Constable Khokedi Sekwati and Constable Teboho Yawa of the Visible Police (Vispol) received certificates after their successful nabbing of a stolen truck with stock worth R8 million in NW 7 Vanderbijlpark. Cupcake Angels raise R1,5 million for kids with cancer

VEREENIGING. - National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer, celebrated on Saturday September 26, was a huge success as a whopping R1.5 million was raised at 70 malls across South Africa. The money raised will assist children by paying for their medical and other day-to-day expenses. This initiative started as a small project in Vereeniging some years ago as the brainchild of Sandy Cipriano of Rio Sol Restaurant. Sandy, the founder of Cupcakes of Hope, says: “We have truly been blessed this year as the community all pulled together to make this National Cupcake Day bigger and better than 2014. This is by far the sweetest way to save a child’s life.” Sandy says that they are extremely proud that their ‘Early warning signs of Childhood Cancer’ leaflet has been translated into 10 languages, as early detection can save a child’s live. Whether we accept it or not, the Vaal Triangle is a heavily polluted area, which has impacted adversely on the health of many inhabitants. In April 2006 the Vaal Triangle was proclaimed to be a High Priority Area with Three Rivers as one of the designated pollution hot spots, because of its heavy air pollution. A committee called The Multi Stakeholders Reference Group chaired by the Director from the department Mr P Lukey, was

formed consisting of managers from all the major industries in the Vaal, senior municipal officers, and representatives of various civil society organisations. Three Rivers was represented by Mrs Card Smith and Mr Bill Nobile of The Con federation of Seniors Organisations. Sub committees were formed to discuss methods of metering pollution and recommending methods of combating air pollution. Monitoring stations were set up in strategic positions and hot spots. The data from these stations formed the basis for the step-by-step plan to reduce air pollution, which was agreed to by all parties. It took several years for industry to agree

on budgets, manufacture equipment, install it and reduce the mainly particle pollution. In 2015 further reductions were planned, but Eskom has held public hearings in the Vaal requesting the minister to grant them exemption from complying with the reduced levels. Their reasons being, their older power stations cannot comply because of their design, and it would be totally uneconomic to try and make them do so. The more modern power stations can be modified but because of demand, they cannot be taken off-line. Once Medupi and Kusile power stations are completed, it may be possible to install

anti-pollution equipment at these stations. * Mr Nobile, the present representative of Three Rivers says he is relinquishing the position, due to advancing age. The position of representative would suit a retired person with a background in industry and a basic knowledge of Physics and Chemistry and someone who is interested in improving the quality of the air that we breathe. Wanneer die vakkeuse in graad 9 gemaak word, dan kies jy die skoolvakke wat jy tot aan die einde van matriek gaan neem. Hoewel hierdie keuse bepalend is vir verdere loopbaankeuses, het die meeste 15-jariges nog nie ’n benul wat hulle wil studeer as hulle vakke kies nie. My standpunt is egter dat in graad 9 daar ’n vakkeuse gemaak word en nog nie gefokus word op verder studies of beroepskeuse nie. Wat egter wel belangrik is, is om die struktuur van die vakkeuse so saam te stel dat leerlinge wat verder wil studeer wel ’n goeie basis het om ’n sinvolle keuse te maak van watter verdere studiekeuse vir hoër opleiding hul wil volg. Dit is ook nie ongewoon vir onseker hoërskool leerlinge om die vakke te kies wat hul ouers wil hê hul moet kies nie, of om dieselfde vakke wat hul beste skoolmaats op be-

sluit, te kies nie. Ons waarsku egter dat ’n vakkeuse met groot insig gemaak moet word. Die wêreld van werk en verdere studie is baie mededingend en ons leef in ’n vinnig veranderende arbeidsmark wat rampspoedige gevolge vir ’n mens kan inhou as jou vakkeuse in graad 9 nie reg gedoen is nie. Indien ’n verkeerde vakkeuse uitgeoefen word kan dit later tot groot teleurstelling lei wanneer die vakkeuse nie in ooreenstemming met hul loopbaankeuse is nie. Dit is belangrik dat ouers en leerders hulle daarop instel om by korrek gekwalifiseerde persone uit te kom wat hierdie assesering vir hulle kan doen. Die psigometris moet reg opgelei wees en die voorligtingsielkundige moet goed onderlê wees in die interpretering sodat die regte konsultasie prosedure gevolg kan word. Dit gebeur wel dat daar by skole toetse gedoen word deur ongekwalifiseerde persone wat dan studiekursusse aan ouers en leerlinge smous. Dit is belangrik dat die feit in gedagte gehou moet word dat duisende studente nie hul studies voltooi nie en moontlik binne die eerste paar maande op universiteit reeds opskop. Daarom is dit belangrik dat die basis van verdere studie reg moet wees in die sin dat die regte vakke gekies moet word. Dit is belangrik om te kyk na beroepsbelangstelling asook gedragskenmerke. Die afdeling oor beroepsbelangstelling

meet hoeveel iemand belangstel in verskillende beroepsrigtings soos kreatiewe werk of rigting wat met mense se dienslewering te doen het en hoe aangelê hy/sy is vir ’n tegniese beroepsrigting. Dis ook moontlik om gedragseienskappe te meet byvoorbeeld hoe selfgeldend of sosiaal aanpasbaar iemand is wat studente sal help om loopbane te kies wat die beste met hul sterk punte en belangstelling sal inpas. Aanleg beteken dit wat jy kan doen, belangstelling waarvan jy hou, en persoonlikheid beskryf die moontlikheid hoe en in watter omgewing of plek jy die beste sal kan funksioneer. Leerders se belangstelling kan van graad 9 tot graad 12 baie verander as gevolg van die feit dat hulle groter blootstelling het in die werklikhede van die lewe. Dis egter belangrik vir die leerling om die regte beroepskeuse te maak omdat dit hulle baie gemoedsrus kan gee. Die vakkeuse moet so gestruktureer word dat dit vir hulle verskillende moontlikhede laat wanneer hulle met verdere tersiêre opleiding wil voortgaan.

Blou Padda trek weg vir die langpad, grondpaduitdaging Liezl Scheepers

Dis langpad en stofpad vir dié Blou Padda. ’n 1968 Volkswagen Beetle met Chris le Roux agter die stuur - gereed vir die 2015 Bull Run. Vir Chris en twee jarelange vriende, Johan de Bruin van Welgelegen, en Henry Harper van Randburg, is hierdie uitdaging ’n eerste. Vandag spring hul weg in Parys om die lang pad te vat na die Soutpanne by Vosburg in die Noord-Kaap. Chris is eienaar van Chris le Roux Motors in Parys en vertel dat die gogga hom gebyt het kort nadat hy die werkswinkel hier geopen het en van die Bull Run deelnemers by sy onderneming bymekaar gekom het op hul pad na die 2013 Bull Run. Teen daardie tyd het hy al die Beetle gehad wat gekoop is met die idee om dit te restoureer. Toe hy die manne met die ou karre sien, het hy geweet dit is wat hy wil doen. Verlede jaar was die werk aan die Blou Padda nie betyds klaar nie, maar vanjaar was daar geen omdraai - Chris wou deelneem. Een van die voorwaardes vir deelnemers is dat die voertuie waarmee deelgeneem word ouer as 30 jaar moet wees en nie meer as R20 000 mag kos nie. Sy Beetle het Chris van die grond af opgebou en ook ’n tweede Beetle gebruik vir parte om die Blou Padda weer so goed soos nuut te maak. Bak ’n koek soos jy daarvan hou... Uiteindelik - die volmaakte, flatervrye koek in ’n japtrap. Meng sommer alles in een bak. Basiese koekresep (maak een groot koek vir 15 – 20 mense) Voorverhit die oond tot 180° C en bespuit ’n oondpan en voer dit uit met bakpapier. Klits saam in ’n groot mengbak: 400ml Helene Kluge strooisuiker, 375g sagte botter, 7 eiers, 750ml bruismeel gesif met 18ml bakpoeier en bietjie sout, 60ml melk en 10ml vanieljegeursel. Skep die gladde, sagte beslag in die voorbereide pan; maak gelyk bo-op en bak vir 25 – 30 minute tot goudbruin en ’n toetspen wat daarin gesteek is, skoon uitkom. Keer uit op ’n draadrak en laat heeltemal afkoel. Versier die koek as geheel of sny in blokkies en versier individueel met botterversiersel. Versiersel: Klits 180g sagte botter, 750ml gesifte versiersuiker en ’n knippie sout. Voeg by 10ml vanieljegeursel en bietjie water/melk indien nodig. Die versiersuiker moet stywer wees indien ’n spuitbuis gebruik gaan word. Joghurt-koek met sjokolade versiersel Voorverhit die oond tot 180° C. Bespuit twee 20cm koekpanne en voer bodem uit met waspapier. Klits 3 ekstra-groot eiers met 375ml strooisuiker en voeg by 125ml olie en 250ml natuurlike joghurt. Roer in 125ml papawersaad, 250ml klapper en 250 ml gesifte bruismeel. Meng baie goed. Verdeel die deeg tussen die twee panne; maak gelyk bo-op en bak 30 – 35 minute of tot die toetspen skoon uit die middel van die koeke uitkom. Keer uit op draadrakkie om af te koel. Smeer versiersel tussen die lae en versier die boonste laag na smaak. Besprinkel met ekstra papawersaad.

Versiersel: Smelt 200g wit sjokolade, 120ml gesifte versiersuiker en 90ml melk in die mikrogolf; roer kort-kort. Voeg by 45ml sagte botter en 5ml vanieljegeursel. Sif 100ml ekstra versiersuiker by en meng goed. Speserykoek Voorverhit die oond tot 180° C . Bespuit ‘n ringvormige koekpan. Koek: Kook 250g fyngesnyde dadels en 5ml koeksoda vir 5 minute in 250ml kookwater oor lae hitte tot sag; maak fyn met ’n vurk. Klits 3 eiers en 250ml strooisuiker vir 10 minute; voeg 187ml olie by en klits nog ’n paar minute. Sif 500ml koekmeel, 7,5 ml fyn kaneel, 5ml gemengde speserye, knippie fyn naeltjies, fyn neut en sout. Roer dadel- en meelmengsel by eiermengsel tot gemeng. Roer 100g gekapte, Sjokolade koek. gemengde neute by. Skep in bereide koekpan en bak vir 45 minute of tot toetspen skoon uitkom. Giet versiersel oor en rond af met 50 g gekapte pekaneute. Versiersel: Smelt 60ml botter en 20ml bruinsuiker oor lae suiker en roer totdat die suiker opgelos is. Roer 500ml gesifte versier-

Verdeel elke koeklaag in twee helftes - jy het nou vier koeklae. Verdeel versiersel tussen vier lae en plaas op mekaar. Eindig met versiersel bo-op, versier met aarbeie en dien op.
