bringing people together, providing knowledge, and opening up new opportunities, and this is part of the concept of providing a onestop service centre for communities.” Baloyi continued that it was the responsibility of the community to ensure that the building was maintained in its current state: “I urge the Lakeside community to take ownership and ensure the facility is used responsibly and safely – guard it against vandalism and theft. “The facility belongs to you, your children and grand-children. Do not let anyone take this gift, and the opportunities it offers, away from you.” Baloyi concluded.

LAKESIDE. - Midvaal Local Municipal Mayor Bongani Baloyi recently opened a state-of-the-art Library for the community of Lakeside and surrounding areas. The Lakeside Library’s opening comes just in time for South African Library Week (SALW), which was observed from March 14 - 21 Baloyi said,“ Libraries have always been about building communities in Midvaal, and today’s opening will pay tribute to that. Our libraries in Meyerton, Sicelo and now Lakeside, are linked to our community halls, so that they can serve as the centre of communities,

Deputy Director: Library Services Wendy Sibeko said, “Midvaal Local Municipality is known for the finer things. You are the smallest municipality, but you continue to beat the bigger municipalities. “Libraries assemble the totality of human knowledge, it is a miracle to read a book. Libraries are centres of knowledge.” Sibeko also urged the community to stop burning libraries: “The burning down of libraries must come to an end. The community must stop taking out their frustration by burning down libraries.” The programme of the day ended with a tour of the library.

Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Bongani Baloyi told Lakeside Primary School chil dren that he was a product of a library. “I am who I am today because I was a member and still am a member of a library.” Baloyi was encouraging scholars to read at the re cent Lakeside Library official opening. ‘Stolen’ child rumours false

VANDERBIJLPARK. – A man’s inappropriate attempt at a joke with an infant and his parents at the President Hyper (Vaal) has developed into a major embarrassment for the supermarket group and two local clergymen. Thousands of social media users have believed and spread a distorted story of a child who was “abducted at a shopping center” and are now embarrassed by their own gullibility. What actually happened was an infant was walking just ahead of his parents at President Hyper (Vaal) when a man jokingly picked him up from behind. The man’s inappropriate attempt at teasing the child and his parents misfired as the mother reacted with extreme shock even though he immediately gave the child back. By chance the child was the grandson of a Vereeniging clergyman (Ster is withholding his name in order to protect the identity of the child). At a recent preachers gathering the preacher-grandfather discussed the incident with Rev Andre Swanepoel of the Herformde Gemeente Vanderbijlpark-Suid. This year is the Church’s Child Protection Year and so Rev Andre mentioned to his

congregation from the pulpit that for children’s safety parents should at all times keep a watchful eye on their children in public places. ” While I was talking about this I remembered my colleague telling me about his grandchild and I told the congregation about the public altercation with the man,” he said. ”I did not intend to indicate that such events only occurred at shopping centres such but at any public place, even in the street at our church precinct,” he said. Unluckily one of the churchgoers had listened selectively and using her cell phone after the church service sent out a Watsapp warning to all her friends about the “kidnapping at President Hyper”. The story which had reached thousand of persons in South Africa as well as Australia and Europe, had acquired many fanciful addons such as that it had occurred the previous week in Krugersdorp and that the abducter with the child had to be tackled in order for the child to be rescued. Other false information was that the man ran with the child to a waiting vehicle filled with members of a child abduction syndicate. All this is totally

untrue. A local industrial psychologist says this is a textbook case of how the public embellishes an unfounded rumour in the social media and causes panic without any foundation in fact. “Humans experience a need for sensation and to express their own fear. They embellish a story until it becomes a credible and frightening story. Additionally the names of two respected clerics were coupled with the story, making it even more credible and driving the anxiety levels even higher. We all need to learn that we should not believe implicitly what is seen on the internet. Be advised to rather read only official publications having a reputation of distinguishing between fact and fiction” he advised. Mr Basil Synodinos, CEO of President Hyper, says the incident was captured on the shop’s CCTV and it is clear that the male client carried out a playful but irresponsible action in picking up the child in front of his parents. The video clip clearly shows that the child was given back within seconds to the shocked mother.

‘”We fully appreciate the parents’ concern as our children are priceless and no one has the right to touch them without the parent’s concent. The safety, security and welfare of our clients and their children is of the greatest importance. We employ an extraordinary amount of security staff on our premises and have state of the art security equipment in place to ensure the maximum safety of our cliernts.” Mr Synodinos said * Spokespersons of the local Police say they are not aware of any child abduction syndicate in The Vaal Triangle and they know of no attempts to abduct children at local shopping centres. The assertions that are made in false electronic messages that the police have warned the public that such events regularly occur at shopping centres are totally untrue. “Parents must always be attentive to the security of their children but shouldn’t make the children unnecessarily anxious. All our local shopping centres’ security measures make them the safest public places where you can be with your child,” said a SAPD spokesperson.

Reading enriches minds

MEYERTON. - “Born to Read” is an initiative by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. It targets pregnant women and new mothers. The idea behind the initiative is to instill a reading culture from a young age into South African children. Parents are encouraged to promote reading to their children from the time they are born. On Friday, March 6, Born to Read held a programme at the Lakeside Library. Representatives from the Gauteng Department discussed the importance of reading with the new mothers. Entertainment was provided by learners of Lakeside Primary School. Attendees were also given a backpack containing educational books, and a nurse provided immunisation to anyone who required it. “Illiteracy is one of the greatest challenges facing South Africa, and programmes such as Born to Read attempt to address this by fostering a love for reading,” says Mivaal Local Municipal media liason officer Aaliyah Dangor. According to Ms Koekie Meyer, Gauteng’s director of Libraries and Archives Services, during their first years, babies hear speech as a series of distinct but meaningless words. By the age of one, most children began linking words to meaning. They understand “Reading can develop a society,” this is one of the messages brought across by the recent Born to Read Cam familiar objects, body parts, animals, andthe names used to label paign. people. Meyer further explains that reading and writing skills develop together. “Children learn about writing by seeing how print in their homes, classrooms, and communities provides information. They watch and learn as adults write – to E-mail: atc.training@telkomsa.net / www.atctraining.co.za Charmaine - 082 927 8444 Office:(016) 932-1886 / 1942 make a list, correspond with a friend, or do a crossword puzzle,” states Meyer.“It is there- Courses: JJC Kruger & Vennote • Pastel Accounting V12 / V14 (Intermediate & Advance) fore important to ensure that parents encour- • Bookkeeping Fundamentals Vereeniging – Umgeni str. 54, age reading at home, and not just target chil- • VAT Training dren alone. VANDERBIJLPARK. Haar bynaam by sportlui was Smiley. Wyle Marieta Bothma.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Suikerbosrand Range. It is located near the town of Heidelberg and covers an area of 11 595 hecta res. The reserve boasts a representative sample of fauna and flora of the Rocky Highveld Grassland. One of the challenges currently under discussion is the need to reinforce the water supply to the Nature Reserve by Extending the Northern Water Line. The Nature Reserve is managed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Agri culture and Rural Development (GDARD).

Do you suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome? By Donna van der Merwe (Optometrist) Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probably one of the eye conditions I encounter most in my everyday life as an optometrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have been practicing here since 1997 and am always surprised by how few people realise that they have an actual condition that needs to be treated on a daily basis. People generally complain that their eyes just feel sore and tired, especially after a long day in front of the computer, or burn a lot when reading and watching TV. Here are some Dry Eye questions answered: What is a Dry Eye? Basically, it just means that there are not enough tears in the eye. The natural tear film keeps the surface of the eye moist, lubricates the inside of the eyelids (makes blinking comfy), nourishes the eye and cleans and protects the eye by washing away foreign particles. It also keeps the corneal surface stable end even. This all means that when the tears stop working properly, your eyes no longer feel comfortable and your vision becomes unstable. What does a Dry Eye feel like? Typical symptoms include: Burning sensation Blurred vision that comes and goes Red eyes Sandy, gritty feeling in eyes Eyes that tear a lot, especially when concentrating Increased light sensitivity Decreased contact lens tolerance White, stringy discharge What causes Dry Eye? Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear production is inadequate or when tears evaporate excessively. Environmental Factors: fans; air conditioners; heaters; dry and windy climate conditions; working in dry and dusty environments Lifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, decongestants, oral contraceptives and many more; focusing for hours on a tablet, cell phone or computer or TV screen; excessive reading or needlework; driving long distances regularly Physical Factors: aging (causes a natural reduction in tear production); certain medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIV and thyroid problems. What can be done about a Dry Eye? Lubricating eye drops and gels: Just as with any chronic condition you might suffer from, a dry eye needs to be treated daily. A lubricating eye drop should be used. Make sure that it is formulated for a Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infections. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t go away when you use the occasional drop, or when your eyes feel better. Drops should be used daily for as long as the environmental, lifestyle and physical factors listed above are present in your life. Supplements: Fish oils like Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are often recommended.Proper sunglasses: Using a quality pair of sunglasses helps reduce the light sensitivity symptoms and keeps the wind away from your eyes. Make sure the lenses have sufficient UV protection. Polarized lenses are highly recommended.Humidifier: Use a humidifier in winter near burning heaters and fires and in summer when the aircon or fan is on. Not sure if you have a Dry Eye? Make sure to contact your Optometrist for an appointment today. Donna van der Merwe can be found in Vaalpark (Tharina Centre) 016-9711232 or Sasolburg (FNB Complex) 016-973-2626.

Emerald’s ‘Party of the Year’ a huge hit VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emerald Resort & Casino’s recent Party of the Year (PotY) hosted at the large E&E Centre once again surpassed everyone’s expectations. `Party of the Year’ is one of Emerald Resort & Casino’s premier events of the year,” says Tanuja Gangabishun, marketing executive at Emerald Resort & Casino. “It is a chance for us to showcase all aspects of the Resort and for us to say ‘thank you’ to many of our business clients.” On arrival guests were treated to a full tour of the Resort. This encompassed the 3-star River Resort, 4 and 5-star Bush Lodges, numerous conferencing options, the entertainment capital that includes Pins Bowling and Aquadome, restaurants Breeze and Sports Bar where the attendees were treated to doughnuts and milkshakes. The tour concluded with a river cruise by Liquid Lounge on the Vaal River where guests could sit back and enjoy the beautiful view as the sun set downriver. The Party of the Year, hosted at the E&E Centre demonstrated the full size and sheer scale of the event and conference possibilities available to guests and summed up the event in one word – spectacular. On arrival at the evening event guests were provided with a welcome drink, greeted by jugglers and stilt walkers and escorted into the venue. Based on the theme of a street carnival, the tables were la-

vishly decorated to perfectly fit the theme. After a brief welcome, themed food allowed guests to experience cuisine from featured restaurants at Emerald Resort & Casino. Entertainment included exotic dancers, a photo booth, performance by iconic 80s South African band, Ballyhoo and sky dancers. To conclude the trip all attendees were invited to spend the night and enjoy the now famous Vaal buffet breakfast at the Hotel. “Besides showcasing all the possibilities that Emerald Resort & Casino can offer the conferencing and eventing industries, it was also a great opportunity for us to catch up with our guests, business partners, suppliers, overseas visitors and industry peers,” concludes Gangabishun. “We trust that everyone enjoyed themselves and we look forward to outdoing ourselves again next year.”

VUT hosts InterCultural Day VANDERBIJLPARK. - The growth of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) as a formidable tertiary institution, both in stature and size - drawing students and staff from all over the world - has motivated the need to host, embrace and celebrate all cultures on campus with an Inter Cultural Day on an annual basis. This year the event took place on Saturday March 14. The VUT has 22 000 students of which about 2 000 are international, coming from more than 35 countries. These students come from very diverse cultural backgrounds all over the world. The Inter-Cultural Day is one of the most important annual events on the campus that is used to appreciate these diverse cultural differences.

Diversity remains one of VUT’s highest priorities, and one of the most important ideals. “VUT hopes that this event will encourage interaction and harmony among staff and students, thus contributing to the social justice and transformation agenda of the university as well as the strategic positioning of the university as far as internationalisation is concerned,” said Ms Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director: Marketing & Public Relations. Amongst the dignitaries present were ambassadors from various countries with whom VUT has very close partnerships.

Battery Centre & Ster Competition The most important check you can do on your vehicle battery: the warranty

Car battery failure isn’t a scheduled thing. It can happen when you least expect it. Finding a reliable, quality car battery can be tricky, but if you look out for a long-term guarantee, you’re halfway there. A warranty is essentially the company’s seal of approval on their product. SA’s leading battery manufacturers, First National Battery, offer the only genuine nationwide guarantee – a two-year product warranty on the comple-

te `Raylite’ Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) range. The warranty is valid at any one of First National Battery’s franchise outlets - Battery Centre - nationwide, regardless of whether it was bought at that branch or from a different stockist altogether. “If it’s a manufacturing fault, and is in the warranty period, it will be replaced – no hassle,” says Marketing Director of Battery Cen-

tre, Andrew Webb. “Moreover, our Battery Centres are equipped to establish the most likely cause of the battery failure by performing a free-of-charge battery assessment. In some cases, the battery itself isn’t faulty and our battery specialists are able to advise on how to eliminate the problem – saving you the unnecessary cost of replacing a battery that doesn’t need replacing,” he adds.

Choose high-quality, reap the benefits. When it comes to replacing a battery, think long term. A cheap battery might save you a few rands now, but could end up costing you a lot more in the long run. All Battery Centres nationwide stock the technologically advanced Raylite EFB range. Designed as a cost-effective solution for cars using start/stop technology, these batteries offer exceptional performance and are an excellent choice for all vehicle makes and models. “These batteries are also fully recyclable and under normal operating conditions will not require any maintenance,” concludes Webb. To get your current battery tested for free by the battery specialists at your nearest Battery Centre, visit the online branch locator here. To stand a chance to win a Raylite battery with free installation from your nearest Battery Centre, SMS the word “Battery” followed by your name and surname and your type of vehicle to 45516. For more information about Battery Centre’s products and services visit www.battery.co.za or call the battery specialists toll free on 0800 112 600.
