Kenyan delegation visits Midvaal MEYERTON. - A delegation of government officials from Kenya visited the Midvaal Local Municipality on April 28, to learn more about a performance system used by the municipality. Five delegates attended from a county in Kenya, and they travelled to the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality as well as Midvaal. The

performance system in which they were interested is the E-Perform system developed by Price Waterhouse and Coopers. According to legislation, every municipality in South Africa must have in place a performance management system used for monitoring and reporting purposes, to ensure that targets and objectives are met. Midvaal uses the E-perform system to

achieve this. According to Midvaal’s municipal manager, Mr Albert de Klerk, one of the lessons learned through this meeting was that South Africa is still a young relative to other African counties. One of the examples he noted was that Kenya has adopted systems of governance very close to the legislation used by South Africa in terms of the Systems and Fi-

nancial Acts of South African Local Government, but a few years ahead of South Africa. There were discussions regarding the possibility of Midvaal Local Municipality working more closely with their Kenyan counterparts in the future on projects relating to performance systems, IT, governance and the role of agriculture in the economy and society.

High five for Paws on the Pavement

MEYERTON. - The Paws on the Pavement Dog Walk, presented by the SPCA Vereeniging/Meyerton was held on May 1 at the Midvaal Sport & Conference Centre. “The funds raised from this fundraising initiative will be put into good use this month, providing care and assistance to many needy animals in our district,” says SPCA manager Marlien Pieterse. “As you know we get no funding from the government and in order to keep our doors open and our wheels turning we fundraise through events like these to make ends meet.” As a non-profit organisation they totally rely upon the goodwill of the community, businesses, suppliers, supporters and volunteers to make these fundraisers a success. “We would like to give a ‘paw-felt’ thanks to our community, businesses, suppliers, supporters and volunteers for their kindness and assistance with this fundraising initiative which certainly helped make the day a success. “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your participation,” says Marlien. For the SPCA staff it was fabulous to see so many happy, healthy animals in one place whilst their owners were walking around proudly, presenting them to the public. This sort of loving kindness to animals give the SPCA staff motivation to face their daily tasks. “This highlights the fact the the community supports and recognises our daily efforts,

even though it sometimes feels like a thankless task,” concludes Marlien. * The SPCA will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves with the support of the community, and together we can make a difference in all animal wel fare.

Dagga worth R600 000 found in taxi mini bus Lazarus Dithagiso

MIDVAAL. - The Vaal Marina Police were patrolling the N1 when they came across a suspect taxi minibus parked near the road on April 13 at about 05:40. Communication officer Constable Brandy Matumise says that as they approached the driver of the white Toyota Quantum, he tried to hide something under some trees nearby before running off on foot

- leaving a 27-year-old passenger behind. The police searched the passenger as well as the taxi. They found 17 bags of dagga weighing in at 192,6kg with a street value of R600 000. The passenger alleged that he is innocent and had no idea what the driver was up to. “I hitch-hiked from Durban and I am on my way home to Katlehong Hostel near Vosloorus,” he told the police. The man was arrested and charged with dealing. He appeared at the Meyerton Magistrates Court before the matter was postponed for further investigation to May 13. The 27- yearold suspect was granted R3000 bail with conditions. Drama against drug and alcohol abuse in the Vaal Triangle Craig Kotze, Special Correspondent

A new generation of drug and alcohol abuse fighters has risen in the Vaal. Unemployed township youths are using drama and peer education to appeal directly at grass-roots level to tackle the region’s out-of-control drug and alcohol epidemic. Vukuzakhe! – Let the youth empower others! – is the call to action of this National Lottery Trust-funded project by SANCA VAAL launched last week in Vanderbijlpark. Vukuzakhe members were professionally trained in drama for three months by Bloemfontein playwright Gertjan Holtzhausen of Lion Hearts Productions. No-one is more passionate about the persuasion power of drama than Vukuzakhe co-ordinator Mthunzi Mthimkulu (33), who completed an intensive 3-month course with Holtzhausen in Sebokeng starting in December 2014. “We want to give back to our communities through Vukuzakhe,” he said. About 70% of patients treated by SANCA VAAL are ‘nyaope’ (dagga and heroin) addicts, and of these, 70 % are children and youth, according to Magriet Botha, SANCA VAAL director. “Live performance has a unique capacity to stimulate and engage the mind, feelings and imaginations as well as to confront in a non-judgmental way,” Botha added. This is echoed by project leader Mthunzi, bringing a message of love and hope to the community. “The training programme was very challenging but brought a massive change to all of us. Those who wander (use alcohol and drugs) are not necessarily lost,” said Mthimkulu. Vukuzakhe can be booked for performances, which are about 10-30 minutes long. Evaton West is a place where stars are born but many don’t seem to realise their potential to shine. You hear of colourful dreams and see hopeful faces but who can they turn to in order to turn those dreams into reality? That’s where role models and mentors come in. OFM investing in the future In a bid to continually serve its audience better, OFM the sound of central South Africa - will soon be moving its studio from the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark. Nick Efstathiou, OFM general manager says, “Emerald Resort and Casino has graciously hosted us for three years. We are now extremely excited to move our studio to new premises within the next few months. Isabel Potgieter will be giving birth to her first in July this year and during her maternity leave we will move our operation in Vanderbijlpark to a property that feeds into our overall strategy to grow the brand in the Vaal area.” Over the past few years, Isabel Potgieter and Samantha Wrightson have broadcast the show, Mid-Morning Magic, from 09:00 to 12:00 from the Emerald Resort studio. Tony Blewitt also broadcast his Sunday morning show, Gold Retold, from 09:00 to 13:00.

Setting up the new studio will be an intricate process that will take place over the next few months. In the meantime, on her return Isabel Potgieter will make use of the all new OFM studios at the Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp. The new Klerksdorp studio will be fully operational by August 2015. “With our new network of studios in Bloemfontein, Klerksdorp and Vanderbijlpark, we aim to create radio shows that are more local in flavour. We are investing in our future to better deliver our product to all of central South Africa. OFM has a massive footprint in central South Africa and we really don’t want to follow a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It is important to us to make our audience and all our stakeholders, from the Northern Cape, through the Free State and North West, right up to the Vaal Triangle feel like they benefit from what we broadcast every day,” says Efstathiou.
