VAALPARK. - Wanneer die sesjarige Chanté Pieterse haar hondjie liefdevol teen haar dogtertjielyfie vasdruk, lyk sy soos enige ander sorgelose meisietjie, maar daar is ‘n verskil: Chanté is op 23 Oktober verlede jaar met akute limfoblastiese leukemie, ‘n vorm van bloedkanker, gediagnoseer. Al kry sy intensiewe chemoterapie en al moet sy 16 pille per dag sluk, glimlag dié fyn blondekoppie steeds maklik en is dit dikwels sy wat haar ouers bemoedig en regop hou. Die Pieterses van Vaalpark was ‘n gelukkige voorstedelike gesin soos enige ander, totdat Chanté in Oktober verlede jaar ‘n “verkouetjie” opgedoen het en dit net nie kon afskud nie. Ouers ken mos ‘n kind en ma Chantel en pa Johan se kommer het saam met Chanté se koors begin klim. Hulle is terug dokter toe, waar verskeie moontlikhede oorweeg is - van mangelontsteking tot ‘n kindersiekte - maar na intensiewe beenmurgtoetse het hulle die verpletterende diagnose gekry. Chanté se akute limfoblastiese leukemie sou vereis dat sy in die opvolgende maande feitlik pal in die hospitaal sou moes deurbring vir gevorderde behandeling. “’n Duisend emosies en gedagtes gaan deur jou. Jy vrees vir jou kind se lewe; jy stres oor jou werk omrede jy besef dat hierdie
nie net ‘n paar dae in die hospitaal gaan wees nie. Jou lewe verander drasties. “Ek het tydens Chanté se behandeling tot dusver kontak met twee ander mammas gehad wat hul werk verloor het omdat hul werkgewers hulle nie kon akkommodeer nie,” sê mev. Pieterse. “Ek wil namens myself, my man en veral my kindjie dankie sê aan my werkgewer, Century Electrical in Vereeniging, dat hulle my ten volle ondersteun en bystaan deur die moeilikste tyd van ons lewe. Chanté se eerste vlak van behandeling het vereis dat sy vir 33 dae gehospitaliseer moes word. Dit het beteken dat ek 24 uur per dag by my kind was en afwesig by die werk. Daar lê nog drie vlakke van behandeling voor wat etlike maande sal duur. Danksy my werkgewer weet ek my werk is veilig en ek kan fokus op my kind se behandeling. Die feit dat hulle my 100% akkommodeer en my salaris ten volle elke maand betaal, spreek boekdele,” sê sy. Chanté is ‘n graad 0-leerling by Vaalpark Primêre Skool en hulle ondersteun haar ten volle. Hulle het haar ouers verseker dat Chanté se plekkie in die skool veilig is vir wanneer sy haar skoolloopbaan kan voortsit. Chanté het verlede week met die volgende fase van haar behandeling in die Donald Gordon Mediese Sentrum by die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand begin. Die behandeling is van die beste wat in die land beskikbaar is,
maar kos sowat R9 000 per keer. Hoewel die Pieterses ‘n mediese fonds het en pa Johan ook ‘n goeie betrekking as instandhoudingsbestuurder by Bersheba Lodge buite Sasolburg het, is hul uitgawes skielik geweldig hoog en hulle moet die rieme dun sny om by al hul verpligtinge uit te kom. “Totdat Chanté gediagnoseer is, was ons in die geseënde posisie dat ons ander in nood kon help. Nou is óns in daardie posisie. Dit is nog moeilik vir ons om daaraan gewoond te raak,” sê Chantel. Die daaglikse uitgawes van brandstof Rand toe, die bybetalings op doktersrekeninge en medikasie is eenvoudig skrikwekkend. In kammawêreld van teater word kleingoed slim VANDERBIJLPARK. - Laerskoolleerlinge van verskeie skole en kleuterskole in die Vaaldriehoek kon hulle die afgelope weke verlekker in die kamma-wêreld van Die Ashoop-prinsessie, ‘n produksie deur Ping Art Productions. Dié toneelstuk vir kleingoed sentreer om die verhaal van die lappop wat op die ashoop beland en haar waardigheid en selfrespek te midde van terugslae en ontbering moet herontdek. Dit leer kleingoed ook van verdraagsaamheid teenoor ander mense en om niemand op die uiterlike te takseer nie. Boonop is daar ook ‘n goeie skoot natuurbewaring ingeklits om die kleintjies meer te leer oor herwinning van produkte. Ping Art Productions is die eerste professionele teatergeselskap in die Vaaldriehoek wat spesialiseer in opvoedkundige teater, ontwikkelingsteater en repertoire-teater. Die geselskap is vroeër vanjaar deur Hannes Muller van Groet die Grotman-faam, en Charlene van der Linde gestig nadat hulle ‘n groot behoefte vir teater in die plaaslike gemeenskappe geïdentifiseer het. Hannes en Charlene is bekend vir hul passie vir die teater en sê hulle wil verseker dat die hoogste standaarde op dié terrein gehandhaaf word. Die Hoërskool Sasolburg se personeel het onlangs gewys dat hulle nie net in die klas goeie werk lewer nie, maar ook as ambassadeurs vir die skool kan uitblink. Personeellede van die skool het op Saterdagoggend 21 Februarie opknappingswerk by Wolwas, ’n skooltjie met twee klaskamers naby Reitz gedoen. Die opknappingswerk het die volgende ingesluit: die verf van die dak, isolering om die leerlinge te beskerm teen die hitte in die somer en die koue in die winter, die netbalpale is geplant en geverf, die kunsleerlinge het die skool se wapen op die muur geverf, asook verskeie skenkings. Not even the rain stopped the Vaal Triangle from “Relaying for Cansa” at this year’s Relay for Life at NWU Vaal. It was once again a huge success with an estimated 5 000 people taking part on February 21. Cansa Vaal would like to thank everybody who participated in this noble event. Without the wonderful Vaal Triangle community none of this would have been possible, says Cansa in the Vaal Triangle. VAALPARK. - Met die begin van die nuwe jaar het Vaalpark Articon weer eens gewys dat daar baie talent onder die jeug is. Meer as 40 items is by die skool se spog talentaand aangebied en die gehoor is behoorlik getrakteer op instrumentale musiek, drama, dans en sangitems. Heerlike eetgoed is aangebied en die skoolsaal het gegons van al die besoekers wat na die groot verskeidenheid talent kom luister het. Van die deelnemers het spoggerig gelyk in hulle uitrustings en daar is tot laataand gekuier. Mammas, pappas, oumas, oupas en sommer die hele familie het kom kyk wat boet en sus nou eintlik by hierdie skool, wat in die kunste spesialiseer, leer.
Met ervare onderwysers en afrigters in vergee hierdie skool die leerlinge om akademie en kunstalente te ontwikkel. Selfs nuwe klasse soos Spaanse danse word aangebied, wat
baie gewild is onder die leerlinge. Die talentaand se deelnemers is gekies na afloop van uitdunne wat reeds verlede jaar gehou is. Verskeie deelnemers het pryse gewen en
talle was verstom met die uitslae. Die hoof, mnr Wouter Wessels, het al die borge bedank vir die getroue ondersteuning om die aand ‘n groot sukses te maak.

MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1 South African amputee para-triathlete, Stan Andrews, competed and placed 9th overall in the 2015 Buffalo City ITU World Paratriathlon Event. The event hosted a total of 39 top male and female international para-triathletes in all five categories. The men’s PT4 category held the fiercest competition with 16 entrants (six of whom were South Africans) of the total 39 entrants taking part in this category. Andrews reported the swim to be tough with a heavy side-current that affected all the competitors equally. Entrants were giv-
en the opportunity to make use of a ‘pre-transition’, where athletes are able to remove their wetsuits and put on their prostheses in an area near the water. Despite having competed in many other triathlons, the ‘pre-transition’ was a first for Andrews, who felt that it cost him valuable seconds, causing his Transition 1 time to be 30 seconds slower than in previous events. The bike course went well for Andrews, who feels that cycling is his weakest discipline of the triathlon event. The wind played into his hands and helped his climb back up the express way, leaving him ready to jump into Transition 2 after two loops.
The run was challenging for Andrews who, after overtaking fellow South African competitor Nico Nel was in 10th place 28 seconds behind Spaniard Rafael Solis Torres. Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of the field due to the disqualification of a fellow competitor, the reason for which is unknown, and was the first South African to finish. In nine weeks’ time, Andrews will compete in Egypt with the goal of scoring enough points to compete in the Grand Final in Chicago, USA. Stan wishes to thank all those whose contributions made this weekend a success, namely TSA and Buffalo City, as well as Bio-
gen and NoExcuses, who contributed to the cost of the trip. * Stan grew up in Meyerton, attended school at Meyerton Primary and then General Smuts High. He now resides in Roodepoort. The Midvaal municipality will be hosting a 5km fun walk on March 21 in Meyerton and the beneficiary of the walk will be StandwithStan, a non profit organisation he founded in 2013. StandwithStan provides disadvantaged amputees with prosthetics, mentoring and maintenance of the prosthetic in order for the amputee to regain mobility and a high quality of life.

Get ready for the Giant Pumpkin Competition
MEYERTON. - It is here. The 2015 Giant Pumpkin Weigh-in Day. If you want to be astonished by giant pumpkins that weigh more than 300kg then you should be at the R59 Shed on March 14 for the Giant Pumpkin Competition. This year there are a number of new entries and people coming from as far as KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. This is the largest pumpkin competition in the country and with the prize money it is also the one with the richest in terms of winnings. A number of fun categories can be entered, too, such as The Ugliest Giant Pumpkin, The Most Beautiful Giant Pumpkin, The Most Unusual Giant Pumkin as well as the Smallest Mature Giant Pumpkin. To add more fun and excitement there will be a Junior Pumpkin Art competition where those who are interested in being creative get to present artistic pumpkin displays. The winner of the Biggest Pumpkin will receive R10 000 and if the winner breaks the current SA record he/she will receive an additional R10 000. Runner-up will walk away with R5 000. Third prize is R2 000. In the junior category the winner will receive R1 000, while second and third prize is R500 and R200. Entrants must note that the weigh-in will take place from 07:00 until 12:00. A R500 cash
prize is up for grabs for the person who can guess the weight of a pumpkin. It will only cost you R10 to guess the weight. Additional prizes and the prizegiving will start at 13:00. All proceeds, pumpkin flesh and money, will be donated to charity. The prizes for the day are sponsored by Standard Bank, The R59 Shed, Talborne Organics, Jane’s Delicious Garden and Livingseeds. Begraafplase kry ‘n nuwe baadjie Schalk le Roux
Die Sasolburg- en Zamdela-begraafplase se voorkoms het honderde mense oor die afgelope maande die joos in oor hoe haglik dit daar lyk. Die gras en bosse het die grafte “ingesluk” en mens kon skaars die kopstene sien. Die Sasolburg Sakekamer het toe die hulp van Magic Lawns ingeroep en hulle het sonder om te huiwer, albei begraafplase teen geen koste gaan opruim. Hulle het afgeskop met Sasolburg-begraafplaas, waarna hulle die Zamdela-begraafplaas getakel het. Danksy Magic Lawns is albei die begraafplase nou silwerskoon en die grafte is vir die eerste keer in maande weer sigbaar. Die gras is kort gesny en alle vullis is weggery deur die werkers van Magic Lawns. Magic Lawns het in minder as ‘n week daarin geslaag om iets reg te kry wat die munisipaliteit in maande nie kon vermag nie. Nou moet die munisipaliteit net die instandhoudingswerk doen. VEREENIGING. - The Ultimate Raceway is hosting the first round of the MSA/ TORC Nationals Championships on March 28 at the Vaal Show Grounds. Several SA record are definitely at stake and competitors can’t wait for the National Championship to start. For the first year every class will have to qualify for their grid positions. The classes attending
the Nationals will be Stockrods, 1660cc, Pinto’s, 2.1 litres, Hotrods, Super Saloons and the V8 Sprint class. The Ninja Midgets and Super Midgets will also be there to take part in the regional championships. It will be a day full of racing and starts at 17:00. Competitors from all over the country are entering and the organisers hope to see every oval spectator at this event.

Wanted by police
BARRAGE. - Police are hot on the heels of a suspect in connection with a house robbery and the murder of a domestic worker. It is believed that the suspect was helped by a minor to gain entrance to the house. They ransacked the house and took valuables to the value of approximately R40 000. Afterwards they murdered the domestic worker by hanging her. Barrage Police are searching for Lebohang Johannes Phadi, after a warrant of arrest was issued. He lived in Ext 8 of Bophelong.
