Couple arrested for drug dealing
Two suspects were arrested for drug dealing on Wednesday morning after the police received a tip off. The suspects were arrested at Sebokeng Hotel where drugs and money were found in their possession.
Don’t Forget the Fogotten: DA DA caucus leader Jack Bloom spent a night at the Barrage informal settlement and visited deprived communities in Vanderbjilpark and Sebokeng recently, as part of the DA’s ‘Don’t Forget the Forgotten’ Campaign. EATONSIDE. - A civilian narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when three robbers tried to rob him of his belongings. According to the victim, who requested anonymity, the three armed men came up behind him, pointed a gun at him, and demanded valuable assets. The victim tried to fight back but the trio’s gun deterred him. The deeply frightened victim was protected by Lady Luck when the angry suspects thought of blowing his head off. For-
tunately the victim managed to duck the bullet, which ended up in one of the other suspects body. The felons’ gunned down friend was in pain and tossing and turning on the ground. This gave the victim room to escape. The suspect died on the scene. While trying to escape, the two suspects moved the deceased in a wheel barrow not knowing that he had already died. They did not get far as Police were alerted about the incident and they were caught with the deceased. According to preliminary Police investigations the suspect shot his crony at
Jerseys for warm hearts! what can only be described as ‘point-blank range’and there was no time to save his life. The shocked robbery victim escaped the scene, leaving the robbers in deep trouble. Police spokesperson Constable Ntshidiseng Phakoe says two suspects were arrested for murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and live ammunition. “They will face three counts when they appear before a magistrate. They will be charged with murder, possession of an illegal firearm and robbery,” says Phakoe.
The Junior Community Chest of Isaac Mhlambi handed over 40 school jerseys to school children who are less fortunate.

Sebokeng Cluster has highest crime rate
Lazarus Dithagiso
SEDIBENG. - A fuming Commander of the cluster that includes Sebokeng, Sharpeville, Boipatong, Barrage, Vanderbijlpark, Evaton, Orange Farms and Ennerdale, General Deliwe de Lange, has expressed her disgust at how cruel and brutal rapists treat their victims. “Sebokeng Cluster has the highest rate of rape and domestic violence in Gauteng. “Evaton and Orange Farms top the list of crime in the region,” said Gen de Lange. General de Lange praised the recent success made by the Sharpeville Police for arresting three suspects of rape. “I must applaud our Magistrates Court for taking a stand by laying heavy sentences on the perpetrators,” said Gen de lange. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster recently she said, “I was devastated by the barbaric incident where three suspects aged 18, 19 and 23 raped a girl and stuffed mud into her private parts. In another incident a former female lecturer from the University of Johanneburg was shot in the upper body.” The suspect was arrested for murder and sentenced to thirty five years in prison. Another woman was stabbed 35 times at the house of her boyfriend. All these incidents took place in Sharpeville. The police continue with the campaign for the community to break the silence of abuse.

Mother faints at the scene Mduduzi Mathebula
SEBOKENG. - A mother and son had to be admitted to hospital on the afternoon of Easter Monday. This was after her son was involved in a car accident triggering shortness of breath in the distraught mother. The pair had to be rushed to hospital due to the injuries incurred in the accident. The 21-year-old son, who was driving a red Golf, apparently lost control of the car during an impromptu dragrace. However the mother fainted at the scene when she saw her son being stretchered into an ambulance. The mother abruptly suffered from what can only be called ‘shortness of breath’ and fainted on the spot. Sadly, the passed-out mother also had to be stretchered into an ambulance. A bystander says the accident occurred when three speeding Golfs were driving from Zone 7 to Evaton.
One of these three drivers wanted to overtake on a very worn road, just after overtaking the first car. The second car’s driver resisted, which resulted in drag racing. “I saw these cars driving down the stream and I can attest that they were driving fast Something was bound to happen. They drove through the stream to the bush. We had to rush to help because the driver of the red Golf was badly injured,” says the bystander. Paramedics were deployed to the scene and they declared both mother and son healthy. They were stable, though they had been rushed to hospital. Police spokesperson Constable Tshifhiwa Mitileni says a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened. He adds that further investigations will be conducted into whether the 21-year-old has a licence or not. He confirms that both the mother and the son’s condition is stable.

SEDIBENG.- The Gauteng Department of Health has trained all its pharmacists, ordered sufficient stock for priority one category patients and is ready to roll out the fixed-dose combination (FDC) of antiretrovirals from the 1st of April 2013 to all persons receiving and those who are still going to be initiated on ARVs. Fixed-dose combination of antiretroviral - Emtricitabine, Efavirenz and Tenofovir - are multiple antiretroviral drugs combined into a single pill, which helps reduce pill burden. The Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi announced in December of 2012 of the inclusion of fixed-dose combination for use in the 1st line treatment of HIV positive people. This move, he said, is to improve adherence and patient outcomes. MEC Hope Papo says, “Patients will benefit from FDC because it simplifies treatment, cutting down the number of tablets that a person has to take daily. They also allow patients to take their medication more discreetly if that is what they prefer to do. With one-pill-a-day FDC, adhering to your antiretroviral therapy is as simple as taking any other tablet.” Initially, FDC will be produced in smaller quantities with production expected to increase over time as pharmaceutical producers expand their productive capacity. In order to phase in FDC smoothly, patients have been grouped into seven categories for prioritisation in the FDC initiation/switch. The first priority groups are new patients,
adults, adolescents and pregnant women, who are eligible to start antiretroviral treatment. The second priority will be all pregnant women needing triple therapy as well as breastfeeding mothers currently stable on a FDC compatible regimen. The third priority will be those who are virally suppressed currently on first line regimen requiring a switch due to toxicity of, for an example, Stavudine. The other priority groups are people currently stable on a FDC compatible regimen with Tuberculosis co-infection, patients currently stable on a FDC compatible regimen with other illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and mellitus, patients currently stable on Tenofovir Disoproxil Formulate (TDF)-based regimen and who request a switch to a FDC; and patients currently stable on TDF-based regimen who, after counseling, agree to a switch to a FDC. The fixed dose combination is one pill to be taken once daily in the place of 3 daily tablets (Tenofovir, Emtricitabine and Efavirenz). Although the FDC is ‘one pill once a day,’ it contains three different ARV medications. “It is easy to take, highly effective and in no way inferior to taking three individual drugs,” adds MEC Hope Papo. “We have emphasized the need to counsel all patients, especially the stable ones, who are not included in the priority groups for the FDC so that they understand why they cannot switch to an easier option,” concluded MEC Papo.

Man hangs himself after fight Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- A 38-year-old Zamdela man apparently hanged himself following an argument with his wife over the past weekend. It is alleged that the man fought with his 33-year-old wife when she requested money for their children’s food. The wife ran away to a relative’s house
and upon her return she made the discovery. Police were called to the scene and the man was discovered hanging from the roof of their bedroom. Paramedics were also called to the scene but the man was certified dead on the scene. The couple had two children, a three-year-old and an 18-month-old.

Community attacks foreigners Pinky Mofokeng
Police remove the body of a man who apparently hanged himself over the wee kend following an argument with his wife.
Angry women fed up with thugs
A policeman stands with the alleged suspect. The 30yearold man was seriously injured after he got a beating of a lifetime from angry women in Tshepiso phase 1. More than 30 women gathered around in Tshepiso phase 1 after they spotted the man apparently breaking into the house of a neighbour who was at work at the time. They realised what he was up to and gave him a severe beating with sticks and anything they could lay their hands on. Police discourage community members from taking the law into their own hands. Photo: Pinky Mofokeng.
SHARPEVILLE. - Sharpeville Police had their hands full on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon as the community ran into the streets and started assaulting foreigners in Sharpeville. It is believed that all the chaos started when community members heard news of the 13 South African soldiers who went to Central Africa as peacekeepers, but were attacked and killed with one still missing. Community members from Tshepiso, Boipatong and Sharpeville as a whole felt that the foreigners had to pay for their brothers’ sins and, to demonstrate their frustration, went to local shops in the neighbourhood and destroyed everything they came across. Just before Human Rights Day, foreigners decided not to open their shops, afraid that community members might attack them. They are aware that every time something happens they usually pay the price. It is believed that community members from all the parts of Sharpeville stormed into the shops and started taking groceries and money
before vandalising their homes. It is suspected that Somalians held a boy hostage in one of their shops. When community members heard the news they stormed into the shop and assaulted three of the Somalians. Police spokesperson Constable Rapule Pitso confirms that four young men were arrested and will soon appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court.

Love (and know) thy neighbour Pinky Mofokeng
VEREENIGING. - Development seems to be in place in Ward 19. Mark Park is the centre of Vereeniging, yet it is not taken care of, or even kept clean. The shopping centre was recently crowded with vendors who used caravans to sell food and beverages. However, this is a thing of the past. The caravans were removed and stalls built to keep the place neat. The parks in the town are already renovated with a programme in place for all the trees to be cut and trimmed for winter and to combat crime. The programme is already in motion in some areas such as Peacehaven and is spreading to all areas of the town. Councillor Puleng Skelm of Ward 19 has also confirmed that a campaign called
‘Know your neighbour’ will soon be put in place as they have noticed that people too often don’t know their neighbours - not even the most basic details about them like their names and addresses. That’s why the Councillor is hoping that residents will adopt the new ‘Know Your Neighbour’ campaign to be launched by the community. Skelm also mentioned that not knowing basic information, such as a full address, when making an emergency call costs time if for example - someone sees a crime in progress, or other crisis situations such as a fire or medical emergency involving a neighbour. Skelm says, “The intention is simply to get you to know your neighbours a little bit better. The campaign also encourages residents to call Police if they see anything suspicious or unusual around the neighbourhood.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - At long last! After a sit-in in the office of Human Resources, Emfuleni Local Municipal Deputy municipal manager for Corporate Services, Ndaba Maseko, cut short a planned trip to address angry community members. About 80 unemployed community members sat in at the offices of ELM demanding jobs last Wednesday. After receiving no joy, they went to the office of Local Economic and Development, LED. The community members bypassed security and forced entry while chanting struggle songs. Police were later called and they apparently arranged with Maseko to cut short his trip to the office of the Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. Apparently Maseko promised the community that from April 2, he would send SMS messages to all the complainants. Maseko told them that only 40 people would be hired as Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) employees. According to reliable sources within the municipality, the trouble started after some members of the community were promised jobs by former Executive Mayor Assistance Mshudulu in 2009. Communications head Stanley Gaba said the municipality did not have sufficient funds. They would be included once there were funds. Gaba said negotiations with the community hit rock bottom as they all wanted to be hired while the municipality did not have funds. The municipality wanted to go through the appropriate channels to hire them.

Let him rest! Lerato Serero News Editor
Comments The return of former president Nelson Mandela to hospital time and again in recent months shows that the old man cannot take it anymore, it shows that it is about time we let the old man go. I know that many will say it is un-African to say this but I think the oldtimer has done all that he could for South Africa and what is left is for him to be given a nice farewell. That last time that the oldtimer was admitted to hospital I wrote the same thing and my head was nearly bitten off
but I stand by my words and continue to say that it’s time that the machines are switched off and the old man is given a well deserved send-off as he has long proven his worth. Sometimes we just have to wake up and smell the coffee - we cannot forever forestall the inevitable. It’s like the farmer who had an old mule that fell into a deep dry-well. As he assessed the situation, he knew it would be difficult, if not impossible, to lift the heavy mule out of the well. So he decided to bury the mule in the well. After all, the mule was old and the well was dry, so he could solve two problems at once. He could put the old mule out of his misery and have his well filled. Let us agree to disagree but I know that most of you realise that the time has come for us to let go and lt him rest in peace. Lerato...

POLOKONG. – “I am doing everything in my power to bring stability, hope and progress to ward 25,” said the Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Attie Moleko. Speaking about his ward Moleko said there’s more to be done. “It’s frustrating to see our neighbouring wards receiving speedy attention for development, while we are left out,” he says. Moleko could not explain why only his ward is allegedly being overlooked when it comes to service delivery. The roads, potholes, sewerage system, the vandalised community hall and unnecessary empty spaces are the main sources of complains. Putting the matter straight, Moleko said during the 2012/13 budget, Emfuleni municipality gave his ward R5, 5 million for roads, stormwater drain systems and speed humps. “I don’t know what happened to that money as I have seen none of it and nothing has been fixed. “This was after the municipal manager requested that we must submit lists of projects. . To my surprise the Department of Roads said that they can only repair two main roads at a time. “I was told that there’s only one grader for the entire Emfuleni area. “I am engaging with the municipality to identify an empty space whereby we can establish public recreation parks.
“My dream is to see that at least 70% of the roads in Polokong are upgraded this financial year. This includes the smallholdings. I know it is not easy but this could be achieved through negotiations with the municipality,” Moleko adds. The smallholdings include Barrage, Lochvaal and Vaaloewer, which all form part of Ward 25. Moleko said he visits and holds meetings through the assistance of his ward committee members. This helps to keep contact and to understand the needs of the community on the plots.

Palm Springs service delivery disaster Fatima Phiri
SEDIBENG. - Poor service delivery and unpleasant living conditions in Ward 20, Palm Springs trouble the Parliamentary Constituency Office under Congress of the People (COPE). According to MPL Clara Sodlulashe-Motau, the ward is in a shocking state due to the poor leadership by the ward councillor. It has apparently been weeks since the water crisis in the area has been addressed and residents are presently living without water, there is poor sanitation and potholes.People live in darkness due to the shortage of street lights. “It is difficult for the public to reach the councillor as spokespersons from his offi-
ce prefer they talk to them first before the councillor,”says Sodlulashe-Motau. She adds that this should not be happening as a community councillor is posted to a community for the sole-purpose of interacting with residents. The COPE PCO calls on local businesses, community organisations and schools in Ward 20 to stand up against the poor performance of their ward councillor. Sodlulashe-Motau says that they have been given the task by the Gauteng Legislature to look into the best interests of the Gauteng community so it would be incorrect for the Sedibeng PCO not to voice its concerns regarding service delivery.

According to Pamilla Mudhray, Group Manager Corporate Affairs “Corporate Social investment (CSI) is an activity which Sasol takes very seriously. As one of South Africa’s largest petrochemical companies, Sasol recognises the importance of empowering local communities and regards education as a key driver of sustained development. We are particularly passionate about literacy and education as vital tools to empower South Africans”. The Sasol Sasolburg Whole School Development Programme is a Public/ Private Partnership with the Fezile Dabi District Department of Education. It focuses on achieving sustainable, positive results and delivery to the local communities. The programme has been designed to address comprehensive educational needs following a three pronged approach, namely infrastructure development, capacity building and moral development within learners.

Dawie Kleynhans said “one of the outstanding elements of this project is the strong emphasis on sustainability and the structure that will make it viable moving into the future. So many (companies) start with energy and expectation, that fizzle out. This looks promising. Another factor is the partnership between Sasol and government - we are exposed to so many projects with over promising and under delivery, this has all the promise of delivery”. Nozizwe Thoka, Principal of Malakabeng Intermediate School, agrees with Mr Kleynhans as she is optimistic about the programme. “I think this project is special because it promotes teaching and learning. If the school is in a dilapidated state, it negatively affects the learners’ abilities. At my school I want to resurface the floors and repaint all classrooms. We have paving, so we want to create netball and other sports fields. The Grade R playground will also be improved so that they’re playing can help them improve motor skills. I’d like to thank Sasol and the government for the initiative, it is very important to us because we need this kind of help in our schools,” says Ms Thoka.

Swimming takes centre stage in the Vaal Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG.- Eligwa Swimming Club together with Swimming Vaal Association joined hands to introduce swimming in the township. The two organisations recently staged a successful Gala Swimming Tournament at Sharpeville Swimming. The main objective of the tournament was to promote the sport in the township and recruit more children into the sport. The tournament attracted participants from as far afield as Preto-
ria, Soweto, Sasolburg and neighbouring areas of Sedibeng. Eligwa Club chairman Pule Sebalo believes there is a serious need for township children to learn how to swim. “It is important for our children to know how to swim for their own safety. Swimming is not only about sport but safety. It is well known that most of our children drown during heavy floods. I was impressed by the attendance and the kids enjoyed themselves,” says Sebalo.

Derbies lead to expectations
Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - The Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League derby between Liverpool and Vaal Dev Academy produced a five-star performance when these two sides played to 1-0 at the Boipatong Stadium on Saturday. Both sides played an attacking-with-action swing from endto-end. However, both failed to convert their chances into goals. Whenever both teams were on the attack it was “eish” from supporters as they missed golden chances that even retired soccer stars could convert with ease. It was the same story the whole afternoon with both coaches watching in disbelief as their strikers missed golden opportunities in front of the goals. Liverpool was the first side to break the deadlock. However, Vaal Academy showed a ‘never-say-die’ spirit when they found an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game and much delighted their coach Ntando “Mboma” Zwane, who jumped up and down like a child who has finally found a lost toy. In another league game played at the same venue, Young Stars FC also shared the spoils when they played to a 1-all draw against Vaal Manchester FC. Young Stars scored but their lead was soon cancelled by the determined Vaal Manchester. It was a weekend of draws with The Birds and Nale Academy playing to a 2-2 draw in another Vaal Milling Promotion League match at the Boipatong Stadium on the same day. Nale Academy had to come back from 2-0 to force the game to 2-2. This was the game of the day with both sides attacking from all the angles. When The Birds thought it was done and
dusted “Ama Cheese Boys” caused an upset when they scored an equaliser a few minutes before the referee blew the final whistle. Vaal Milano beat MBC FC 3-0 in another Vaal Milling League match played at the George Thabe Stadium on Saturday. This weekend fixtures: Stream B Friday Roshnee FC vs Reki Manyora (Roshnee, 17:00) Saturday Moropodi vs West FC (Sports Centre, 11:00) Sebokeng Academy vs Vintage (Zone 15, 13:00) EYA vs City Stars (Zone 7, 13:00) Sunday Celat Vigo vs Mighty Killers (Zone 3, 11:00) Dream Team vs Roots Mighty Boys (Sports Centre, 11:00) Junior Lions vs Tokyo (Zone 3, 13:00) West Ham vs Zone United (Sports Centre, 15:00) Stream Vaal Dev Academy vs VUT FC (Boipatong, 13:00) Vaal Stars vs Liverpool (Bophelong, 13:00) Nale Academy vs Vaal Milano (Shakespear, 13:00) Sunday Vaal Manchester vs The Birds (George Thabe, 13:00) Sebokeng Ajax vs Young Stars (Shakespear, 13:00) MBC vs Vereeniging Old Boys (George Thabe, 13:00).

Safa Sedibeng back empty handed! Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG. - Safa Sedibeng regional team came back empty-handed after finishing at the bottom of their group during the Future Champions International Tournament recently held at the Nike Centre in Soweto. This is a disappointing tournament taking into consideration that Sedibeng is one of the regions respected for producing the best talent in the country. Safa Sedibeng was one of the three teams representing South Africa in this international tournament. SuperSport United, Johannesburg Secondary School, University of Pretoria are other South African teams in the competition. Despite finishing at the bottom of the group, the Safa Sedibeng team played some exciting football, however, it lacks international experience. However again, this is not an excuse for the regional team, taking into consideration the talent this region has. The selection of the team is another concern because - every time - a squad has to be assembled in the last minutes, and coaches don’t have enough time to prepare the team. A Mohloli Secondary School soccer team player before they were knocked out of the Futu re Champions School Cup at Suiderlig High School. Photo: Zacharia Nale.
The other issue is the junior league in this region. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, regional team head coach Themba Dlamini also believes there is a serious need for the junior league in this region. He says competing against international teams was a good experience for the boys.
“We have learned a lot of things from this tournament and I’m happy because, at the end of the day, we learned something. I felt honoured when the Everton coach (England) complimented us on the way we played. “This is one experience that I will share with my colleagues here at home,” says Dlamini.
