‘Missing’ kids found Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARMS. - Some 12 children were found at a secret mountain near New Canada Station near Soweto where they were said to be getting initiated. The children were all reunited with their loved ones on Monday night after an intensive search by Evaton’s Police Task Team on Monday. Some of these kids were reported missing by families while others were not. It is alleged that among these kids are those that went voluntarily to the mountain (Lebollong), while their parents thought they had been abducted, most of them being underaged. The most worried parent was the grandmother of a 14-year-old, Grade 9 learner from Tharabollo Secondary School in Palm Springs. “I spoke to him numerous times about going to the mountain (lebollong) and the kind of friends he mixed with. I knew they were up to something bad and sat him down. I explained that it was not part of our culture to be initiated. I tried everything. I asked his uncles to speak to

him and we thought he’d heard clearly,” says the granny, who was upset to see her grandchild in such an appalling condition. The young boy was in dirty clothes that stank and had been without water for about two weeks. The distraught grandmother was delighted to be reunited with her grandson. “I thought he was dead. These children do drastic acts there and I can’t imagine the anguish I would have gone through if something bad had happened to him. I’m very disappointed in him. He’s a brilliant child at school and I just don’t understand why he would do this,” adds the grandmother. Police spokesperson Tshifiwa Mitileni says four traditional surgeons aged between 17 and 27 were arrested and released on warning. Police urge parents to timeously report missing children. These children are from different areas such as Sharpeville, Palm Springs, Boiketlong and Orange Farms. Sedibeng chairperson of Traditional Surgeons Solomon Mofokeng says that they were not aware of the incident. However, he emphasises that surgeons should comply with the rules and bylaws of initiation schools.

Walk of shame: These kids were found at a place near New Canada Station near Soweto. They had been without food for two weeks.

Human Rights day celebrations reclaimed

Pinky Mofokeng

SHARPEVILLE. - Chaos erupted last year following a decision by the national government to hold the March 21 celebration in Soweto. The Day is celebrated as Human Rights Day but was informally called Sharpeville Shooting Day. It commemorates the killing of 69 people in Sharpeville in 1960. These

people were part of a crowd of protestors against the carrying of ‘dompassses’. To reassure the Vaal Triangle, Sharpeville in partucular, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation - Lebogang Maile - alongside Sedibeng’s District Municipal Executive Mayor Coucillor,Simon Mofokeng, recently launched the 2013 Human Rights Month programme at the Sharpeville Hall. The monthlong programme will form part of Gauteng provincial government’s campaign to commemorate and honour heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle, including victims of the Sharpeville Massacre, and the role they played in the struggle for Human Rights. This year’s commemoration, mainly in Sharpeville, will see a number of activities take place such as the Sharpeville theatre production, half marathon, Imbawula storytelling through the media, the cleaning of graves and a choral music festival. MEC Lebohang Maile says, “The commemoration of this day is, among others, to celebrate Human Rights for all, to honour the country’s fallen heroes and heroines who fought and resisted the then apartheid government’s unjust pass laws.”

No stone was left unturned during the raid on Thandukwazi Secondary School in Sebokeng recently. Drugs, pornographic material and sharp objects were seized from the pupils during an operation by the Vaal Rand K9 Unit, Emfuleni Local Muni cipality Traffic Department, and Evaton SAPS. as a resource. According to PAC’s Emfuleni Local Municipality Councillor Abel Radebe a protest march has been organised for March 20 where they will be marching to the major companies in this area to demand that amongst other things they start hiring people from this area, that they do away with labour brokers and that they start investing in businesses in this area. “What we are requesting from these companies is simple and that is making sure that they play their part in terms of social responsibility. “Yes, we are aware that some are involved in the different community projects but what we are saying is that they are not doing enough. “The area has grown and we have them as major companies yet our people are unemployed, there needs to be some sort of economic development plan that they should come up with”, Radebe says. The protest march will start at the Boipatong Stadium (Masenkeng) continuing to the different industrial areas in the area. “ What we are saying to them is that they should shape up or ship out, we are also concerned about their tender processes and they also need to explain to us what they are doing in terms of the governments project of job funds” Radebe ends.

Police tell resident to pay Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - Police allegedly told a resident to pay rates and services before Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) could unblock the sewarage system. According to Emily Mofokeng, a Bophelong resident, she had gone to the local police station to ask for numbers of Metsi-a-Lekoa, the ELM water wing, when she was told openly that Bophelong residents do not pay for municipal services and it would be a waste of time to give her the numbers. Mofokeng had wanted to call Metsi-aLekoa as a manhole in her yard had been blocked. The sewerage water was running all over the streets and inside Mofokeng’s yard. Some residents said they have moved their toddlers to a temporary place as the smell had become unbearable. Cecil Schreuder, ac ting chief director of Metsi-a-Lekoa, said he is not aware of the problem regarding the sewerage system. It might not have come to my office’s attention. Schreuder advises the community to report any problem regarding municipal water services to either Ward Councillors, MMCs, Customer Cares. Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said, “It is a concern that the officer allegedly responded in that manner. “I would urge a complainant to come to the station commander to see how best we can help. The police do not deal with rates and services,” said Steyn.

Get off your high horses! Lerato Serero News Editor

Comments The return of Human Rights Day celebration to this region by the Sedibeng District Municipality and its provincial government does not excite us the ordinary members of the community, the celebration belongs here. Sharpeville residents in particular have been vindicated in that what they went out onto the streets to protest for last year - when the celebration was taken to Soweto has been proven right. Leaders decided to take the celebration of this important part of their history away and, by so doing, totally distorted the necessary information that is supposed to be passed from generation to generation. What the Sedibeng District Municipality and the government should have done last week during the launch of this year’s Human Rights Programme was apologise to the community and by so doing acknowledge that what they did last year was erroneous, ‘finish and klaar’. The resistance of the then apartheid regime’s unjust pass laws started in Sharpeville, the constitution of this country was signed into law in Sharpeville. Do I make sense or need I say more? Soweto has its history, Langa has its history - the same as other areas of the country, and these have never been taken away from their original places. Why then did the government feel that Soweto deserved to ‘shine’ in Sedibeng’s light? The government was compelled to bring back the celebration of this important day in history otherwise all hell would have broken loose! Hence I say what they should do during these celebrations is be ‘man’ enough to apologise for trying to rob the community of its heritage.

While the month-long celebrations continue the government, particularly the local authorities, should not forget the mandate they were given by the community when they elected them into power - that of service delivery. They should get off their high horses and come down to hear the needs of the ordinary people whose votes they will be looking for in the near future. Until there is eradication of dilapidated houses and shacks in Small Farms, until RDP houses are not sold in Tshepiso, until New Village (Lengweleng) is electrified, until a correct rates-and-taxes system is in place, and until there is a total difference in terms of development at grass roots level, to mention but a few issues - those in power should know that there is nothing that excites us about them and they are not doing us a favour. Finish and Klaar! Lerato...

Unqualified employees? SEDIBENG.- “It is unfortunate that when the municipality creates employment other people use that as an opportunity to discredit the local government.” These are the words of the Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesperson Klaas Mofomme who was responding to allegations that the municipality hired over 150 unqualified workers in December 2012. The allegations were made by sources who informed Sedibeng Ster that even when the municipality is not financially stable as it has been claimed in recent reports, it continues to hire people who are not competent. “We are aware that there are people that have been hired without proper procedures followed, some who are not even qualified for the posts they occupy,” the sources said. In response to the allegations Mofomme says that the allegations are not true and intended to mislead the public. He says that all the people who were employed during the period went through proper channels of employment

Trust, but not too much! SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale

Not only Pirates and Chiefs but interPSL club supporters will be on their way to the FNB Stadium this coming Saturday to witness the mother of derbies in the country when Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs clash in the Absa Premier Soccer League match. Pho to: Zacharia Nale.

Pirates are dead men walking Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Orlando Pirates are like a dead man walking! Soccer experts and scribes write Orlando Pirates off when they take on the on- form Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premier Soccer League match on Saturday. Orlando Pirates Coach Roger De Sa is a dead man walking, coming into this encounter after Pirates’ recent unexpected defeat in the Nedbank Cup. De Sa knows that a win is the only thing that could steer his ship back into the league championship. More than three points are at stake! Pirates might not be doing well for now, but come Saturday it is going to be a new ball game altogether. Like other derbies in the world this South

African derby divides the country into two and Saturday is going to be no exception. It would be an insult for anyone who thinks that Chiefs will just roll over Pirates based on their recent performance. It has to be emphasised that form counts for nothing when these two sides meet. As things stand, Chiefs have the advantage, although Pirates still have a game in hand. The players that will set the scene alight include Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Itumeleng Khune for Kaizer Chiefs. Whist Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali, Thabo Matlaba, Senzo Meyiwa, Dain Klate and Lucky Lekgwathi will be carrying the hopes of the Buccaneers on Saturday. A draw will be a fair score but Pirates need these three points more than Kaizer Chiefs.

‘Build It’ for local coaches

When you trust football people, you do so at your own risk! Don’t say Shooting From The Hip did not warn you. At one stage Shooting From The Hip called for a change of leadership at Safa Sedibeng, especially of president Xolani Mtumtum. God is my witness! Shooting From The Hip was told in no un certain terms that Mtumtum is a “great” leader and hats off to him. This I was emphatically told. But how quick things can change! The very same people who accused Shooting From The Hip of “rubbishing” Mtumtum’s leadership now want him out as Safa Sedibeng President. It’s probably safe and accurate to say that the knives are out for Mtumtum. Mtumtum knows perfectly well that Shooting From The Hip is not a great fan of his leadership but because he was voted into power by the teams, I gave him the benefit of doubt. In fact, if I had voting powers Mtumtum would not be the Safa President for one simple reason – the man’s focus is now on the Safa national office. For starters, the media is no friend of

anybody and we don’t write stories to please anybody. Media are the eyes and ears of the community, thats all! Shooting From Hip’s relationship with Mtumtum is not personal but all about football. Some of the local football administrators question Shooting From The Hip’s relationship with Mtumtum. Really! Worse, the people who question Shooting From The Hip’s relationship with Mtumtum are the very same people who defended Mtumttum when this columnist suggested he step down as president of Safa Sedibeng, because he has taken us nowhere as far as the development of football in this region is concerned. My message to those who head the smear-campaign to get rid of Mtumtum is that they should not involve innocent people in their unholy company. Gentlemen, please don’t use the media to destroy people in this region. Methinks Mtumtum’s is not the only head that needs to be chopped off! There is a load of other deadwood people in our local football that needs to be decapitated (figuratively speaking) because they hide themselves behind other people’s mistakes. Like I said before – as long as we vote for these bus drivers and salesmen to run our football, we will go nowhere, to say the least. The interesting question is: Who will replace Mtumtum - a bus-driver or a salesman? Not again please!

‘Cheese boys’ in finals

SEDIBENG. - Whilst the focus is on the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, here at home attention will be on the Development Soccer Tournament final bet-

ween local rivals Vaal Milano FC and Nale Academy u/17s. This much-anticipated local derby is scheduled to take place at Sharpeville’s George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. The final will play as a curtain–raiser to the

Safa Sedibeng Castle Regional League match between Vaal Milano and United Scientists FC. In another final, u/14s Rust-ter-Vaal Saints FC will be up against the “Cheese-boys” - Nale Academy - on the same day. Speaking to Sedi-

BOIPATONG. - Former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena once again rolls up his sleeves to stage a Top Eight ‘Axe’ Lounge Soccer Tournament for the u/19 soccer teams. This is scheduled to take place at the Boipatong Stadium from March 21 - 23. This Bidvest Wits defender will stage this tournament in an attempt to assist in the growth of football in this region. The winners will receive trophies, medals, soccer jerseys; plenty of prizes are also to be won on the day of the tournament. Apart from development, Mokoena stages this tournament to promote his Aaron Mokoena ‘Axe Lounge’ in Vanderbijlpark where the local soccer people will come and have fun watching live games. The lounge will be a place to be for the local soccer fans screening local and international midweek and weekend matches live . This is not only for football people as we welcome everyone to come and have fun while watching the beautiful game,” says Mokoena. Mokoena says there is a serious need to produce new talent for Bafana Bafana and the best way to start is at grass roots level. For the past two years Mokoena has being organising this tournament in the area. The man known as “Mbazo” in soccer circles because of his no-nonsense tackling, is passionate about the development of football in this region. He believes these youngsters can also make it in life playing abroad as he did before he finally returned last year to play for Bidvest Wits.

beng Ster Sport, Eric “Fox” Moya, organiser of the tournament, says he takes the tournament to the George Thabe Stadium because it is a perfect venue for the final. Moya says the two teams are from Vanderbijlpark and Sharpeville and it only makes sense to take the tournament to the venue. However, the only team that is from outside is Rust-ter-Vaal Saints FC, which play against Nale Academy in the u/14 final. The excited Moya says he is grateful for the support he receives from the Rust-ter-Vaal community and now it’s the turn of the Sharpeville community to fill the George Thabe Stadium. “I know the Rust-ter-Vaal community will be very upset to hear that the final will take place at the George Thabe Stadium. The reason I decided to take the final to Sharpeville is because both teams - one way or the other - come from this side. I want them to play in front of their supporters, especially their parents. For the past two weeks they have been travelling to Rust-ter-Vaal and it’s only fair to give them home advantage,” says Moya.
