VANDERBIJLPARK. - Renowned playwrite and theatre-practitioner Gamakhulu Diniso recently joined the Vaal University of Technology. A new initiative came from post-graduate Nkululeko Khumalo, a Virtual Art artist. The primary reason for the relationship is to show old veterans, learners and young artists the art industry as it is today. A group of first and second year Virtual Art students visited Diniso Art Studios - based at his Bedworth Park home. Three-piece plays were displayed by the veteran. Diniso lectured about the industry and how he ended up in theatre while he was a drawing artist. “I fell in love with art at an early age and I pushed my way up to create my name. Art is life,” said Diniso after his performance. Students were fascinated by Diniso’s work of the 60s and up until today. The veteran has kept his masterpieces, having faith that they would become more and more viable. Khumalo says it’s a great pleasure to work with such an openminded person who is willing to help and has shown his experience. “I created this small theatre because I was tired of being tossed up and down for booking with local theatres that are turned into funeral venues while artists don’t enjoy the privilege of working in them. I turned my garage into a theatre. The vision is very wild. I still have a lot to do,” says Diniso.

SHARPEVILLE. - Johannes Masuku, an old Sharpeville Volgenoge, was forced by circumstance to witness his child’s brutal death on Tuesday afternoon. He was forced to watch his child Moltino Setjaba Masuku being stabbed to death by a home boy. Intensity and anxiety built itself up into a towering rage as two `home boys’ engaged in a brutal fight that shocked the entire community on Tuesday afternoon. What triggered the fight remains a mystery to the family. It was reported that Moltino and the suspect were at a local sheben when the bloody fight started. The two started wrestling verbally. Moltino was then stabbed in the hand by a bottle at the shebeen, which triggered his uncontrollable anger. His father and the entire family were alerted to the fight and tried to intervene to stop their own son. Moltino then allegedly fetched a garden spade, which he used to break the suspect’s house-win-

dows shouting for him to come out to fight. The suspect is said to have jumped out of the house with a huge butcher knife in his hand. He stabbed Moltino in the chest and sprang back into his house. The stabber stayed put, stunned at his own act, til his victim died in the street. The entire drama moved the community to attempt intervention but people failed dismally to stop the two from fighting to the death due to the homicidal anger between them. Said Masuku: “I could not reach my son. He was so angry that he did not hear the sound of his father’s voice. He was so bent on exacting vengeance. “I had to witness the most painful thing in my life. I saw a knife-blade in my son’s heart spurting blood. I saw him sprawled on the ground and watched him take his last breath.”

Favourites for ANC conference Lazarus Dithagiso

Sedibeng. – The date for the Sedibeng regional conference of the African National Congress (ANC) has been announced. The deadline by which time all branches must decide who they want leading the region is this weekend. At least 57 branches have passed audit. It’s a tug of war, a horse race and a win-win situation to decide who is going to lead the district for the next three years. Both two camps were out, guns blazing, campaigning their way through the branches ahead of the regional conference to be held at St Georges, Pretoria, on March 13 15. The conference will be facilitated by Provincial Executive Committee members. Those for the Toy-Bob called: ‘Forces for change in Sedibeng’ are Toy Manqa - chairperson, Thulane Kunene - deputy chairperson, Bob Mthembu -secretary, Ernest Dlamini - deputy secretary and Andiswa Mosai-treasurer. The current top five that includes Mthembu as secretary is credible and has political substance. Branches have shown trust. The top five of Sy-train, are Simon Mofokeng - chairperson, Robert Thema - deputy chairperson, Bheki Ngobese - secretary, Lerato Lamola - deputy secretary and Merlina Gombi - treasurer.

A warrant of arrest was recently issued and Police are urgently searching for the alleged suspect. It is alleged that the suspect got into the victim’s house, accompanied by a minor. They broke into the house whereupon they discovered and overpowered a domestic worker. They then ransacked the house before stealing items worth R40 000.

After that they hanged the domestic worker. The Barrage Police are searching for the alleged suspect Lebohang Johannes Phadi after a warrant of arrest was issued in this regard. day wish. Alinah Mokoena, a grandchild to Van Rooi, says, “Today we are celebrating Gogo’s life. It was not easy for her to live to this age and the entire family is fortunate to still have her.” Mokoena states that Gogo’s one wish is to one day have her own house as she has never owned a home. Ward 10 councillor Prace Boland says, “It

hurts me that Selina does not have a house. We still have time on our side and I will personally take her to register for an RDP house on Monday.” Boland stated that it was the first time he had heard about this. Boland added that because Selina was the oldest resident living in Ward 10, it was very important that they all take good care of her.

No operational certificate, no burial: ELM Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Mzizi Funeral Directors has been slapped with immediate suspension.’ They can no longer operate in the jurisdiction of Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. It has been established that the rightful owner of the Certificate of Competence (COC) passed away last year. This meant, according to the municipality, the immediate cessation of the certificate the moment the legitimate owner passed away. This comes from acting ELM Communications manager Stanley Gaba. Mzizi was advised by the health inspector to apply for a new certificate and to

attend to some of the requirements alluded to as a matter of urgency. To add salt to the wound, a bereaved family member had to bury their loved one in a decomposed state. Holding, preparing and storing a dead body or corpse without meeting required standards is violating the Health Standards Act, Gaba said. The fridge was not up to the required standard, hence the decomposed body. Gaba said that, for a certificate to be active, Mzizi had to screen, receive and dispatch the corpses, washing bays for the hearse and repair the refrigeration system. All the requirements put into place by the municipality are not negotiable but have to be performed.

Don’t give up, don’t give up and don’t give up!

Many a youth, has let themselves go. They have given up on life; losing is one of the easiest things one can do. One day you’re your fresh, fun, breezy self, listening to all of your favourite music and hitting up the places you feel the most comfortable. The next thing you know you are down and out. Be true to yourself. To be true to yourself means to act in accordance with who you are and what you believe. If you know and love

yourself you will find it effortless to be true to yourself. Just as you cannot love anyone else until you love yourself, you cannot be true to anyone else until you are true to yourself. Be who you are! Have the courage to accept yourself as you really are, not as someone else thinks you should be. Do not take action or pretend to be someone else for the sake of gaining acceptance. To be true to yourself takes courage. It requires you to be introspective, sincere, open-mi-

nded and fair. It does not mean that you are inconsiderate or disrespectful of others. It means that you will not let others define you or make decisions for you that you should make for yourself. Be true to the very best that is in you and align your life consistently with your highest values and aspirations. Those who are most successful in life have dared to creatively express themselves and, in turn, broaden the experiences and perspectives of everyone else.

You have to dare to be yourself, and follow your own intuition, however frightening or strange that may feel or prove to be. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t get discouraged by their progress or success. Follow your own path and stay true to your own purpose. Success is ultimately about spending your life happily in your own way. Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you, so don’t you dare give up! Lerato...

SEBOKENG.- The fourteen-strong, newly elected committee members of Wildebeesfontein Evaton Community Organisation (WECO) are furious over a report that recently appeared in a local community paper not associated with Sedibeng Ster. Their anger stems from the fact that in the report they are said to be hijacking houses that are repossessed by banks and not allowing new owners access. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster the committee members say that an organisation that calls itself WECA (whose leadership is unknown) is the one behind the whole fracas. They further add that they have formed a forum with different organisations that include SANCO and COSATU to deal with issues of eviction and MBD Credit Soluti-

ons, a company hired by the Emfuleni Local Municipality to collect outstanding rates and taxes. Many community members have recently been threatened with seizure of properties and eviction by the company, with community members contesting what they term a wrong and faulty billing system by the municipality. “WECO sells no land; it sells no houses and we are also not behind the hijacking of houses. Instead we are against the whole thing of threats and evictions. “We are helping members of the community register as indigents and everyone is welcome to our meetings, which are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 in Zone 13 next to the Technical College,” say the WECO members.

Boiketlong accused await sentence

Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - Three of the four suspects accused of burning the shack and two vehicles of ward Councillor Maseloane Nthebe of Boiketlong informal settlement have been found guilty in the Sebokeng Magistrates Court. One suspect known only as Pulane, appeared only a few times before she disappeared. A warrant of arrest has been issued. It has been alleged that the suspect is in or around Mpumalanga . The accused are Molefe, Sipho Manganyi, Dinah Makhetha and Pulane. All three

stay in Boiketlong. The incident happened when the community of Boiketlong went on the rampage barricading the road and attacking the shack of Nthebe in the morning of May 28 in 2013. The accused, who have been out free on bail, were led to the waiting cell for sentencing on March 24.

Big Save Cash & Carry Evaton: Supermarket & Wholesaler

Address: 175 Adams Road, Evaton. Big Save started out in 1989 as a family business, owned by the Jardim Family, trading as Waltloo Wholesalers. In 1995, it changed its name to Big Save. Big Save Evaton is part of the Big Save Group, which has 5 other Cash & Carry outlets and 5 liquor outlets, all trading under the Big Save brand. George Versfeld and Patrick Oertel partnered with Big Save in a joint venture to open the Evaton Branch. The other Big Save stores are in Waltloo, Pretoria Market, Hammanskraal, Mabopane and Marble Hall. The building in which Big Save Evaton is located, was built 5 years

ago and had been waiting for a suitable operator to commence business. During 2014, Patrick Oertel, who has 33 years experience in retailing and wholesaling in South Africa, and George Versfeld, who has 35 years experience in banking in South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, concluded a deal with the Big Save Group which led to Big Save Evaton opening its doors on the 12 December, 2014. Big Save Evaton employed 90% of its staff from the Evaton/Sebokeng area, almost all of whom had been previously unemployed. Big Save Evaton offers a comprehensive range of groceries, perish-

able and non-food items and also has its own in-store bakery, butchery and fruit & veg department. Big Save Evaton is referred to as a “hybrid” store in that it caters for the needs of traders and public alike. Until now, traders and organisations wanting to buy in bulk at competitive prices had to travel far distances. Now, it’s on their doorstep. Due to it been part of the Big Save Group and its affiliation with the Independent Cash & Carry (ICC) buying group, Big Save Evaton is able to compete in terms of price with the larger, more established participants in the FMCG industry.

Being owner-managed, Big Save Evaton is passionate about fulfilling customer needs and providing excellent customer service. Our staff is always reminded that nobody works for Big Save Evaton. We all work for our customers, who are our ultimate employers and who pay our wages. Without good service, we will not keep our customers. Without our customers, we will not keep our jobs. Water: waste not, want not Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. - The Local Government Sector Training Authority (LGSETA) and the Vaal University of Technology recently held a Water and Wastewater Roundtable Discussion at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Kempton Park. This was to mitigate an impending water crisis and skills development challenge in the sector. VUT vice chancellor and principal Irene Moutlana said, “Water is a critical and scarce resource impacting on the economic and social development of our country. As an academic institution our role is to conduct both applied and basic research so that we can avert a water crisis.” According to VUT’s Professor Ochieng Aoyi; “If there is no intervention, South Africa will soon experience serious “water dry-out” similar to the current power black-out. Accordingly, the discussion aims to be a solution-orientated platform for the stakeholders to engage robustly on water and wastewater issues.” Aoyi emphasises that the gathering is not a talk shop: “The insights gathered from the discussion will help

us understand the problems better, empower us to identify the skills needed in the sector and the development priorities thereof.” Water and wastewater management is one of VUT’s key research areas. Accordingly the institution is involved in efforts to find solutions for the sustainable delive-

to water and wastewater challenges confronting the country. We believe that this partnership will further strengthen VUT in its quest to become a leading authority in water and wastewater management research,” explains Nqaba Nqandela, LGSETA Administrator and Acting CEO.

ry of clean water to communities and industry. “In line with its mandate of facilitating skills development for local government, and its aspiration to be a thought-leader in the sector, LGSETA partnered with VUT to find innovative and scientific solutions

ELM bursaries for future Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - To extend a hand to the less fortunate, to open the doors of learning, to improve access to universities and to push back the barriers of poverty and inequality through education. Addressing these issues the executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Gretha Hlongwane, accompanied by some of her Members of Mayoral Committee (MMCs), donated bursaries worth over R1 million so students could pursue their studies at universities. Hlongwane said she chose the students to follow their dreams: “I am very passionate about education. I am from the `struggle generation’ that never had an opportunity to receive any assistance. The bursaries will pay all your fees until you finish your studies. If you keep on failing, be careful not to lose the money. The bursary award is aimed at motivating techniques to keep the spirit of education at the highest level.” The municipality spends some R1 million every year on the programme: “We want the business sector to open its purse to contribute in assisting students with potential. “Today’s opportunity raises yesterday’s failure. Our investment is not in vain as it has been scattered on very fruitful intellectual soil,” said municipal Health MMC Councillor Sello Pitso.

Addressing students who received bursaries from ELM, Pitso said they must go out there and make executive mayor Gretha Hlongwane and the people of South Africa proud. “Use the money received in the form of bursaries very professionally,” Pitso ad-

vised. “The municipality has invested in its own students. We have a caring municipality with its own council,” he said. Finance MMC Mabandla Ronyuza and Local Economic Development MMC Khulu Malindi encouraged the students to be ambas-

sadors for Emfuleni: “Do everything to the best of your ability. Most of you are from poor families. Take care of your siblings also. Temptations are there but be vigilant at all times by prioritising your studies,” they said.

SEDIBENG. - Three enthusiastic young people from the Vaal region have had a promising start to 2015. The trio kicked off their studies in different tertiary institutions with financial support from ArcelorMittal South Africa. Hopolang Ramoji, Lerato Dhlamini and Sicelo Rakhetsi are all graduates of the company’s Sebokeng Science Centre. They realised their dreams of furthering their studies when they were amongst the ten students offered bursaries by ArcelorMittal South Africa to take engineering-related courses. Ramoji of Evaton West, who matriculated from Poelano Secondary School, is currently studying towards a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering at the Vaal University of Technology. Rakhetsi went to Sapphire High School in Bophelong and is studying towards a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. Dhlamini, who obtained six distinctions at the Residensia Secondary School and was the third best-performing learner in District 8, is enrolled for a Degree in Chemical Engineering at Wits University. All three students were selected during their Grade 10 year based on their academic performance to attend classes at the ArcelorMittal South Africa Science Centre in Sebokeng. The ArcelorMittal South Africa Science

Centres - in Sebokeng, Newcastle and Saldanha - are intended to elevate levels of understanding for both learners and educators in Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Computer Studies. Providing world class facilities and an `edutainment’ approach to difficult concepts, these centres of excellence have resulted in an improved performance in these critical subjects amongst those chosen to attend the Centre. In partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the centres are also able to take the “science experience” to schools that do not have access to properly equipped laboratories and learning facilities. Rakhetsi attributes his success to the edutainers at the Science Centre, who are dedicated to helping learners with their studies. His proud grandmother says that the bursary opportunity was a blessing as he is a committed young man who will do whatever it takes to complete his studies so he is guaranteed a job in the future. Rakhetsi’s advice to other learners still in high school is to dedicate time to their studies and listen to their teachers’ advice. Dhlamini says there was a big celebration at home when she was awarded the bursary. “It is a dream come true,” she says. Her family survives on her grandmother’s pension and she is hoping to provide some financial relief for her family once she completes her studies. Ramoji says he always wanted to study En-

gineering and knew that in order to achieve his dream he had to sacrifice his social life and prioritise his schoolwork. He followed a stringent study schedule throughout high school and knew that education was his only escape from poverty and the way to a prosperous future. His mother, who is a domestic

Local coaches have become cry-babies Some local development coaches complain they were not informed of the Future Champions Gauteng Cup’s Coaching Clinics at Isak Steyl Stadium over the weekend. Coaching clinics are conducted by some local and Johannesburg coaches at the venue as part of the Future Champions Gauteng Cup initiative - every year. My answer to those development coaches is simple – as long as you associate yourself with “football politicians” you will always be left out. As a coach, associate yourself with coaches, not with people

who are after positions. Local coaches have this habit of always complaining as if they are owed something. Why does it have to be like this? Every time coaches claim they were not aware of some or other football event programmed for this region! Yes, our football will end up run by Johannesburg people because, back here at home, the only thing we are good at is complaining and more complaining. This thing of entitlement in football is the main reason why this beautiful game is a mess in this region. And as long as those development coaches spend their precious time in boardrooms instead of on the field, they will always complain that they are not aware of football events in this region. TOUCHLINE would like to advise SAFCA members here that they must start involving themselves in the development of regional football. The or-

ganisation must also stop focusing on “football politics” and refocus on technical matters. Mr Martin Mpholo, the reason why SAFCA was not aware of those coaching clinics is because its members are busy with football camps in this region. For example, this region doesn’t have a data base for coaches so how can you expect those organisers to even get hold of the coaches when a coaching clinic is programmed for this region? For example, Mr Mpholo, you use your personal email when you send information to the relevant stake holders because the organisation doesn’t have an email adress. Before we complain, we should first check facts because even the Safa Sedibeng website is antedated, and I doubt it is still active. To coach ‘Manana’ it doesn’t mean that, if you’re a woman, you must receive everything on a silver platter. No, coaching in football

is not about “ladies first” like in politics. For example, women such as Ria Ledwaba, Mato Madlala, Fran Hilton-Smith and others worked their way up and they didn’t expect favours from their male counterparts. TOUCHLINE’s advice is – less talk and more action, or you will hate football. In this region the only thing we know is to criticise. TOUCHLINE hopes that development coaches will take this advice in good spirit and not interpret it as an attack on them. Development coaches have become crybabies ... !!!! The future of South African football lies in your hands, in case development coaches are not aware. Stop this tendency to complain even when it is not necessary! Lets do this again next week on TOUCHLINE.

Street Athletics rule in Zamdela This is some of the action during the Metsimaholo Athletics Academy's street athletics event held in Zamdela recently. Photo: Zacharia Nale. Zacharia Nale

ZAMDELA. - Metsimaholo Athletics Academy hosted ‘Street Athletics’ in Snake Park (big street) last Friday. The event saw local schools come in numbers to participate in this unique programme. The schools that made this project a success were Kopanelang-Thuto Primary, Lehutso, Isaac Mohlambi, Theha- Sechaba, Iketsetseng Comprehemsive, Nkgopoleng High School and Bafula-Tshepe Primary. The academy chairman Godfrey Mashekgwane says the main aim of the event was to create awareness and talent-identification in Zamdela. He believes there is a need to recruit young athletes in the area, seeing that many young people are involved in drugs and crime. The Former SA 800 champion – Ezekiel Sepeng - was among guests who graced the event. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Mashekgwane

SAFCA Playing Philosophy workshop... Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - A workshop at the Sharpeville Swimming Pool will be hosted by the Southern Africa Football Coaches Association (SAFCA) Sedibeng. The workshop’s day programme starts at 12:00. This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by organisation publicist Martin Mpholo. Mpholo says topping the agenda will be SAFCA Awareness and the Football Playing Philosophy. SAFCA president Greg Mashilo will make presentations regarding the South African Playing Philosophy. Mpholo says all coaches in this region are welcome irrespective of whether they have coaching certificates. He says the purpose is to take South African football to the next level and compete against the best football nations like their European counterparts. For more info call Martin Mpholo @ 082 2926 204.

said this project was a big success with more than 500 children turning out to participate. “The main objective of the project is to create awareness that athletics is still alive and kicking in the area. We want to bring back athletics in township and identify new talent. We want to thank Sepeng for coming and spending the whole day with these kids. They were very excited to see their hero and role model. We also wish to thank all the stakeholders who made this event a success, including the municipality,” he concluded.

Reunion volleyball tournament continues

Zacharia Nale

BOIPATONG. - The Re-Union Volleyball monthly tournament took place at the Boipatong Stadium recently. This initiative is part of reviving volleyball in townships, according to organisers. The first project started in Sebokeng last month. Volleyball is a sport that used to be played every weekend in Sedibeng but gradually died in the townships. The attempt to revive the sport is welcomed by many former volleyball players in this region. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Zenzile ‘Ze’ Manzi, who initiated the programme, believes that since they started with the initiative the response from township volleyball clubs and former players has been positive. Manzi says that, once again, he was pleased with the attendance at Boipatong Stadium, with the community also coming out to support the initiative. “The people, especially the clubs, are now used to the idea, taking into consideration the attendance. Attendance improves with each and every tournament we play and this serves as motivation to the clubs and players,’ he says. The initiative is the first of its kind in this region with what it takes to bring back the good old days of volleyball into the Sedibeng region. Menzi says the only time this sport is now played in the townships is during school progammes.

These are some of the legends who have taken up the cudgels to revive volleyball in the townships.

Future Champions Gauteng Coaching Clinics a huge success Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - An estimated 700 children packed the Isak Steyl Stadium for the Future Champions Gauteng’s coaching clinics on Sunday. The programme formed part of the Future Champions Gauteng Cup games that took place at the same venue that day. The day’s programme started at 07:00 with

local and Johannesburg development coaches conducting coaching clinics for local boys and girls. The attendance was overwhelming with the coaches teaching these youngsters the basics of football - dribbling, juggling the ball, turning, passing, shooting, to mention but a few. Among the noted names who conducted these clinics were former Orlando Pirates left-

back defender Mandla Zwane, former Jomo Cosmos striker Dingaane Tshabalala, Celta Vigo Development coach Themba Dlamini and others. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates has been crowned the Future Champions Champions Gauteng Cup champions after they beat Jomo Cosmos on penalties in the exciting final. The final

had to play for 20 minutes as coaches complained of fatigue, taking into consideration the number of games eac team played on the day. Pirates, Cosmos, SuperSports United and University Of Pretoria have all qualified for the Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament scheduled to take place at the Nike Center in Soweto from March 23 – 28.
