VEREENIGING. - The presiding magistrate broke a record when he sentenced two ‘taxi’ serial rapists to over 100 years in jail at the Vereeniging Regional Court last week. The two suspects Boitumelo Steven Galubetse (37) and his co-accused Bongani David Madlala (37) did not show any remorse throughout the long marathon case which began in 2008. The former taxi drivers from Orange Farms used to terrorise and rape women whom they would pick up with their taxis and then pretend to give them a lift to their destinations.’ According to some of the victims the pair would wait for the last passenger to disembark from the taxi, and they would then drive to a secluded area near a dump site next to Golden Highway where they would rape the victims at gunpoint. Following the rape

the victims would be thrown out of the taxi naked. One of the victims, a middle aged woman, testified that the victims did not use safety precautions and she had to terminate a pregnancy following the ordeal. Galubetse, a single father of two children, was out on parole after previously being sentenced to 15 years in prison in an unrelated case. Both the accused will serve 49 and 51 years respectively for rape while they will also serve another 780 years in prison each for aggravating robbery, kidnapping, robbery with common assault, and sexual assault. The sentences will be served concurrently. Issuing the sentence the judge said that there was no remorse and justification shown by the accused as to why they robbed, raped, kidnapped and sexually assaulted these vulnerable women.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- At least 27 school learners escaped death when their taxi mini bus caught fire on Monday morning. The learners were forced to jump out of the windows and run for their lives as the bus was engulfed by flames. Passersby helped control the fire and some of the learners were forced to break windows to gain exit. The devastated driver of the Mercedes Benz Walter Mogale said he thanks God that none of the lear-
ners were injured. ‘When I was about to round a circle, I heard a loud bang from the engine and suddenly there was smoke coming out of the engine. “There was no time to collect some of my documents from the bus interior,’ he said, adding that it was hardly two months since he spent about R50 000 to replace the engine. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn said no docket was opened as there were no injuries or a malicious incident.

SEBOKENG. - Sedibeng Ster featured a story that shocked the community in August last year. Rebecca Mayekane (17) went missing and was later found raped and brutally murdered at Westsidepark, East of Sebokeng. A case of murder, rape and robbery was investigated by Sebokeng Police Detectives who subsequently found the suspect (known to the community) in possession of the deceased’s cell phone at the scene. On Thursday evening an angry mob, including schoolchildren from Dinokaneng Secondary School, marched to the accused’s
home, wanting to burn it down as there had not been any progress in the case. Police managed to calm the situation and the mob was dispersed. The Mayekane’s family says they are still keen to receive closure over this incident that has torn their family apart. “I won’t rest until justice takes its course. “My daughter was brutally killed and dumped like a dead dog. The suspect showed no remorse for what he had done to my child. “I’m going to fight for justice until my hair turns white,” says Vangile Mofokeng, aunt of the deceased.

SEDIBENG. - The Vanderbijlpark SAPS is investigating an intimidation case docket following alleged death threats made recently by a so called “murder agent” towards a female victim (24). This latest scam once again shines a spotlight on the negative abuse of the Internet to target innocent victims. It is alleged that the victim received an e-mail in early February from a person posing as a “murder agent.” In the e-mail the suspect stated that he was hired, by someone close to her, to murder her. He mentioned that it was only because he felt sorry for her that he was contacting her. The suspect said he knew where she lived, the identities of her family, and where they lived. What frightened the victim most was that the suspect warned her that he was watching her movements, had her house surrounded by his accomplices, and that she would be killed if she notified the police. The suspect stressed again that he felt sorry for her and gave her the option
be identified, says, “We have no idea how it happened. It is the first time in 25 years that this has happened. We are working on a plan to make sure that this does not happen again.” Police spokesperson Constable Ntsekiseng Phakwe confirms that an inquest has been opened at the Deur Police Station.
RUS-TER-VAAL.- A 56-year-old woman was recently found floating in a semi-stream not far from Rust-ter-Vaal after she allegedly escaped from a mental institution nearby. She was later recognised as Dimakatso Maleme who always wandered around Rust-tervaal asking for food. It appears concerened community members told Maleme that they would call Police to help her find a suitable home, not realising that she had run away from a home that she had been admitted to. It is believed that she went missing on January 31 and her badly decomposed body was found on February 21, floating in a semi-stream with some of her body parts missing, supposedly eaten by water-creatures. Maleme apparently hailed from Vergenoeg in Sharpeville where she was living with her brother and sister-in-law. She was taken to the mental institution last year after her family apparently struggled to control her. Her family alleges that her death came as a shock to them. Modiehi Masakale, her sister-in-law, says, “I will never forget what I saw, her body was in such a dire state. That image will haunt me forever.” The institution had another version. They allege that her family dumped her at the institution in 2011 and never visited her once, the family disputes this, saying that they visited her on Christmas Day last year. How Maleme managed to escape from the institution remains a mystery as the place has an electric fence, the family alleges negligence in the institutions part. The owner, who did not want to

of e-mailing him back. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn says that, terrified and fearing for the safety of her family, the victim sent an e-mail to the suspect. “The suspect, for the third time said that he could have killed her but didn’t because he felt sorry for her. He offered to deliver a tape with evidence about the person who wanted her dead. The price on her head was R3 00000. He demanded a further R5 000-00 once she was satisfied with the evidence. The complainant decided that she wasn’t going to stand for the death threats or pay the money and decided to report the matter to the Vanderbijlpark SAPS,” Steyn says, adding that further investigation revealed that the complainant was probably not the first victim targeted by this suspect. VEREENIGING. - The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) and Sedibeng women at large marched to the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Friday. This was when they handed a memorandum of grievances over a notorious case of triple murder in January 2006 in Meyerton. The case was never brought to a close. The triple murder case made headlines in 2006 when Jocelyn Lesito, Victoria Ndweni and Constance Moeletsi were bru-
tally murdered at Protea Dry Cleaners. MEC for Safety Faith Mazibuko was part of the march where she urged the Sedibeng region to support its fallen heroines. Mazibuko says they cannot turn a blind eye on this case. “People have died and justice needs to prevail,” said Mazibuko at the peaceful march. Vereeniging Station Commander Brigadier Pule Mokoena received the memorandum on behalf of the SAPS and promised to look at the matter and forward it to the relevant departments.

No sense of community left? Lerato Serero News Editor
Comments ‘South Africa has gone to the dogs,’ I say this as the reality that more and more young people have resorted to crime to survive sinks in day by day. It is common knowledge that crime starts as far back as the time when Cain killed his brother Abel in a fit of jealousy. Even so, what is happening in the country these days is completely out of control and a solution needs to be found to this lunacy. While the outcomes of crime remain the same the methods of murder, torture, robbery and rape have taken on an advanced state and these are committed by young people. Recent statistics prove me right when I say that our jails are filled to the brim with young people. Why is this? Thanks to inventions like the Internet, identity theft and e-mail scams, crime has become easy to commit and money is always a factor. Something
needs to be done. What kind of a nation are we if we do not take care of the young? Does the idiom, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ no longer apply in our communities? A good number of “crimes against property,” such as burglary, robbery and theft, are the work of drug addicts. The addicts run out of money and need some quick cash for their next fix. Most of the young people commit crimes because there is no longer a sense sense of community. Outside their school and colleges, there isn’t much chance for children to mingle with different parts of society, and most of them stick to the group they know. The children who have intellectual, talented, genetic characteristics outshine others mainly because of their training. To eradicate this menace of youth crime, we have to put all our efforts into popularising enlightenment, education, merit, equity, and equal opportunities for everyone. Parents should be implementing values. We should educate and teach our children the right way and lead by example before it is too late and we end up with a ‘nyaope’ addict as a president. Just my thoughts. Lerato...
Residents seek Provincial help Lerato Serero
SEDIBENG.- The community of Ward 36 has resolved to seek provincial intervention following a meeting at Mohaladitoe Secondary School last week. The meeting was held to give the community feedback following what should have been a meeting between the Ward 36 residents committee and the speaker of the Emfuleni Local Municipality. Amongst the things that were to be discussed in that meeting is the memorandum that was handed in to the municipality last year outlining the residents’ service delivery concerns. The concerns that were that of huge rates and taxes (Masakhane) amounts that are to be paid, non-working water meters and a total lack of service delivery amongst others.
Community members demand a total scrapping of the huge amounts of rates and taxes, a flat rate system and also that an analysis system be put in place. The meeting between the speaker and the concerned residents committee apparently never took place as the speaker was a no-show and only sent the local ward councillor in whom the community have decided to call a vote of no confidence along with some members of the municipality. “ We are now going to the province for them to help us with these serious issues that we are raising,” say the residents in unison. Ward 36 councillor Maselloane Nthebe’s phone rang unanswered when Sedibeng Ster contacted her for comment.

Nepotism and corruption alleged
Pinky Mofokeng
EVATON. - Angry community members around Evaton in Bodea Road recently stormed to the Kwena Bakwena construction site and blocked the entrance. They demanded that workers down their tools. The community members claim that Ward 43 Councilor, Jabu Zondi is guilty of nepotism but the councillor argues that those hired were chosen as per database. According to a community representative many ANC members who were recruited and trained, were promised that they would be selected to work for the renewal project, but things did not turn out that way. Instead unknown people were hired. She also claims that there is corruption at the regional offices and would like to push for
mayoral intervention. It is said that a meeting was scheduled for Friday between community representatives and the Evaton Development Forum, but the same people said to be causing corruption failed to show up. Community members proceeded to the construction site in Evaton on Monday morning. aiming to wreak havoc, but Police were called and the crowd was dispersed. Ward 43 Councillor Jabu Zondi says, “Community members allege that the hiring procedure was not legit even though we informed them about the vacancies. The people currently working at the construction site are from the database. We did not hire according to political convictions. The people who are causing confusion are the same people who never attend public meetings.”
Police had to intervene and stop angry community members who wanted to gain entrance by force at the Kwena Bakwena construcion site in Bodea Road, threatening to burn the place down if the workers did not down tools. Photo: Pinky Mofokeng.

School shoes for the needy Lerato Serero
SHARPEVILLE. - There were smiles on all the faces of the children of Ward 11 ( Tshepiso Extensions 3 and 4) following a donation of school shoes. The donation was recently made by Emfuleni Local Municipal councillor Veli Mzangwa with the help of different companies. Mzangwa says they saw how children suffered when it came to school uniforms, particularly shoes. That was when they decided to embark on this project to source donations
from big companies. “This is by far one of the poorest wards in the region and we wanted the members of the community, especially the young ones, to feel a sense of worth. We are also telling these people that the ANC is there for them - not only when it comes to service delivery - but also through their children,” says Mzangwa. All in all 50 pairs were donated and Mzangwa aims to continue with the project throughout the year.
NYCASA empowers community Fatima Phiri
EVATON:- The National Youth Cooperative Advisory and Strategic Ambassador (NYCASA), a youth forum based in Evaton, facilitates information and implements integrated youth development programmes. The one-year-old organisation has thus far achieved so much through its main concern, which is the youth. NYCASA president and provincial secretary of the youth parliament Michael Makiri says their mission is to develop and initiate projects that will free the community of crime, unemployment and substance abuse, as well as persuading the youth to develop selfhelp sustainable projects. “These self-help sustainable projects will break down the dependency syndrome amongst the youth and create employment for them,” he said. NYCASA’s concern is that the youth lack skills, are unemployed and addicted to illegal substances. Makiri adds that NYCASA does not consider marching and fighting against government and councillors to be of strategic value. “NYCASA is here to revive and restore the dignity of the youth as we believe everyone has their own God-given potential,” he said. Some of the projects run by NYCASA are the “Bafazi Vukani{" Women’s development assistance group, which targets women, and the Poverty Alleviation Project Assistance (PAPA), targeting the youth. NYCASA also hosted an Entrepreneurial Prayer Campaign, which is a workshop aimed at anyone who

The Emfuleni Local Municipality, Ward 41 councillor Chicco Moshoaluba, together with the Department of Agriculture, started an initiative that creates employment and combats poverty. This initiative encourages fruit and vegetable gardening amongst the community members in Lakeside, Evaton and Zone 3. Voluntary community members attended a two day workshop for three hours where they had training based on fruit and vegetable gardening recently. Part of the workshop was to identify an area where they would go and clean, day two of the
workshop was practical. Free tools and packets of seeds were given to volunteers to put in action their fruit and vegetable gardens. The planting will commence in April. “This initiative aims to create employment and with people growing their own food, it will help them fight poverty,” said Moshoaluba adding that he was passionate about agriculture and that this initiative showed that government is doing something for its people. Everyone was clearly happy with the free tools. “I hope the community will open cooperatives and have a big land someday where they can continue farming,”said Moshoaluba.

Our football is not a ‘Pakistani’ tuckshop SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale
It’s high time our development coaches refuse to be treated like “doormats” by these so-called incompetent football administrators in this region. As long as development coaches dance to their tune, the growth of football in this region will continue to suffer. You heard me! To be direct, the regional team went to compete at the Future Champions Gauteng Cup unprepared even though they finished in the semifinals. The poor coach, Themba Dlamini had only oneday to prepare the team to battle against the best PSL development teams and academies in the tournament. If I may ask - how long will this region continue to operate in this manner? Coach Themba was forced to go to war with an “army” that had not been psychologically prepared or trained. Shooting From The Hip can nevertheless only praise him and his technical staff for a job well done. Shooting From The Hip believes that if they had had enough time to prepare for this tournament, maybe we could have made it in to the final. Yes, the final! We had the same situation last year when our regional team had to be assembled at the last minute with the local soccer teams forced to release their players
at the ‘eleventh hour’. It was the same story this year: “We received the information very late from the Safa national office.” Why does information intended for the development of football have to be received late every time? Either the Safa national office doesn’t take this region seriously, or somebody is not doing his job properly. You tell me! Imagine, just imagine, if our regional squad prepared in time, this region would be crowned champions at each and every tournament we play. The other thing is that - as long as we have no junior league in this region – our regional squad will be as good as nothing. For example, all those teams that competed at the Future Champions Gauteng Cup play league at their respective regions. But here at home, we don’t have such a league where our boys can test their skills at the highest level. I don’t care who says what: the people who run football in this region don’t have vision. Local development coaches must learn to refuse to be made scapegoats. For example, if Coach Themba and his technical staff failed, their reputation was threatened here. They could be blamed for failing this region! Safa Sedibeng Executive Committee Members must stop running our football like running ‘Pakistani’ or ‘Somali’ tuckshops. Our football deserves much better from people who claim to be administrators. With the Super League kick-off this weekend, there is also a need for the junior soccer league to start. Eric “Fox” Moya has laid the foundation and it is up to Safa Sedibeng and its LFAs to carry on from where he left off.

Local soccer fans spoilt for choice Zacharia Nale
EVATON. - Local soccer fans will be spoiled with many soccer tournaments to be staged at various venues in Sedibeng during the Easter Holidays. The Annual Kgogi Sports Foundation Tournament is scheduled to kick off in Evaton from March 29. This year’s tournament will include netball, u/13s, u/15s, u/17s and senior soccer teams. This mouth-watering news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sports by tournament co-ordinator Mondli Nkosi. Nkosi says all the teams are invited to a meeting scheduled to take place at Pooe’s Store in Evaton on March 23. The winner in the senior category will smile all the way to the bank with a cheque of R10 000, a trophy and medals. The runner-up will receive R500 and medals whilst the losers’ finalist will pocket R250 and deals. A fourth placed team will go home with R1500. The winner in the u/17 will receive a R2000 full set soccer kit, medals and trophy. The runners-up will be presented with a R1000 cheque, soccer kit and medals. Third-placed will
get R500, ten soccer bibs and medals. The team that finishes in fourth place will receive R300 and ten soccer bibs. The winner in the u/15 will receive R14 00, a soccer kit, trophy and medals and the runners up will pocket R700, a soccer kit, and medals, whilst the third place will receive R400, ten soccer bibs and medals. In the u/13 category, the winner stands a good chance to win R900, a soccer kit, trophy and medal. The runner’s up will get R450, soccer kit and medals, whilst the third placed will receive R250, ten soccer bibs and medals. Nkosi says that, this year, the organisers decided to include netball as an extra sporting code because the sport is one of the most popular sporting codes in South African history. He says netball and soccer are the most popular sports in the townships. “The tournament keeps these youngsters occupied during the Easter Holiday. It is a well known fact that `nyapoe’ is destroying our youth and only through sport can we stop this,” says Nkosi.
Nale Academy crowned champions Zacharia Nale
SHARPEVILLE. - Rust-ter-Vaal Development Soccer Tournament came to an end with Nale Football Academy, otherwise known as “Cheese Boys”, crowned tournament champions at the George Thabe Stadium on Sunday. They achieved this feat after they beat their rivals – Vaal Milano FC - 1-0 in an exciting final of the u/17s. While Soweto Derby failed to produce fireworks, these local soccer teams kept local soccer spectators on the edge of their seats for the better part of the game. It was end-to-end stuff with both sides playing in attack mode. When everyone was preparing for the penalties, Nale Academy scored in the dying minutes to break the hearts of Vaal Milano’s supporters. The tournament was organised to revive junior soccer league in this region. It was a good advert for local football with local fans and parents coming in big numbers to witness these youngsters’ talent. In another final, Rust-ter-Vaal Saints beat Nale Academy to be crowned the u/14s champions. This is another game that had all the ingredients of an exciting clash. The winners received the trophy, medals, pairs of
soccer boots to the Most Promising Youngster that day. There were also individual awards for players who performed exceptionally well that day, such as The Player Of The Tournament, Goalkeeper of The Tournament, Top Goal, Coach of The Tournament. Everyone was the winner at the end of the day with all the participating teams receiving medals for finishing at the respective positions. The Department of Sports and Recreation also put its hand into the tournament, donating some prizes for the participating teams. Speaking after the tournament, organiser Eric ‘Fox’ Moya challenged the local football association to continue the work for which he believes he has founded towards restarting the league in this region. “I want to thank everyone who made this tournament a success, especially the Department of Sports for sponsoring us with medals and trophies. I’m very humbled by the support of the Sedibeng people,” he concluded. Photo: RustterVaal Saints FC u/14s after being crowned the RustterVaal Develop ment Tournament Champions. Safa Sedibeng knocked out in semi’s Zacharia Nale
SEDIBENG.- Despite a one-day preparation, Sedibeng Regional Squad showed character before it was defeated 2-1 by SuperSport United Babies in the semifinal of the Future Champions u/17 Gauteng Cup at Wits University Campus over the weekend. No one gave the team a chance, taking into consideration that it was assembled at the eleventh hour for the tournament. Regional squad head coach Themba Dlamini was full of praise for his boys. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dlamini says his team showed character against all odds when they qualified for the semifinal. He says: "If they’d had enough time to prepare, I have no doubt they could have gone all the way through to the final and probably won the tournament.” This was a better performance compared to last year’s tournament, whereby the regional team failed dismally to make a statement in the tournament. “I’m very proud of these boys because we had only a day to prepare for this tournament but they played like a team that has been there for some time. I also want to thank all the teams that agreed to release their players despite last-minute notices,” adds Dlamini. He says he can’t complain because his team lost to the best team - SuperSport United - which went all the way to be crowned the Cup Champions. This was after SuperSport United beat University of Pretoria 5-4 on penalty-shootouts on Sunday. Meanwhile, Residensia Secondary School failed to make their presence felt in this tournament. This Sebokeng-based school together with Safa Sedibeng squad represented Sedibeng region in this tournament. Softball and swimming action galore Zacharia Nale
EBOKENG. - A hive of activity is scheduled for various venues in Sedibeng this coming weekend. Firstly, the initiative to revive softball in Sedibeng bloomed when the Emfuleni Local Municipal Sports Department called for a soccer indaba at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14, Sebokeng, on Sunday at 9:00. Secondly, Eligwa Swimming Club will stage a Swimming Tournament at the Sharpeville Swimming Pool on Saturday. The day’s programme starts at 10:00. The Emfuleni senior sport control officer – Professor Sebeela - is the man behind the much awaited softball indaba. Sebeela invited former softball administrators such as Bricks Tsunke, Phera Maoutloa, Kgapa Papela, Matlakala Mafale and others. He also invited the former Softball
Southern African President Matthews Kutumela and former Emfuleni Local Municipal Mayor Johnny Thabane, who is also passionate about softball. Sebeela says the entire Sedibeng community is invited to come. He also urges former softball players and team officials to attend this special occasion. The only softball team that is still active in our area is VUT Softball Club. “We want to bring softball back because this sport used to bring joy to many in this region. This sport produced great men and women. We used to have household-name softball teams but not any more,” he concluded. Mantsho Matlokoti, one of the Swimming Tournament organisers, says they want to revive the sport. She says Sharpeville Swimming Pool has turned into a ‘white elephant’.
At long last! SEDIBENG. - Hallelujah! This might be a sigh of relief for local soccer teams as we finally received the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Promotion League fixtures. It’s now official – the Vaal Milling Promotion League will kick off this coming weekend at the various venues in Sedibeng, thanks to the hard working Philip “Mgusho” Ndlovu who called a meeting and convinced teams to affiliate. All the teams have received their block fixtures and are expected to get their players’ cards before the end of the week. Speaking to Sedi-
beng Ster Sport, Ndlovu says he is relieved because most the work has been done and the only thing left is the cards. He was confident that they will be finished before the weekend.“We expect all the teams to start with their league programme at the weekend. I want to thank the executive committee for its support. If it wasn’t for them I don’t think I could have achieved this alone. Now it is up to the teams to make this league worthwhile as was the case last season,” he ends. The league is divided into two streams - A and B. The rest of the weekend fixtures:
