EVATON. - Nine families were left homeless after the house they live in caught fire in Renfrew Road on Saturday night. It is suspected that a lady named Maria Thaele (35) set her apartment on fire after a fight with her husband earlier that day. She apparenlty told all the tenants to get out because she wanted to set the place on fire to spite her husband, but Thaele claims that she was outside chatting to a neighbour when she heard a loud noise coming from her living room, she went in to inspect and on arrival found the house on fire. According to her it was an electrical fault with one of the plugs in the house that caused the blaze. The fire was so aggresive that it spread to all the rooms in the house leaving everything burned.

The families live in the house in which they share different rooms. Personal belongings were lost in the fire including the children’s school uniforms and birth certificates. Sedibeng Ster spoke to neighbours around the area and they confirm that the couple fight almost every second week, particularly on weekends, but Thaele says, “We were not fighting that night. We were yelling at each other, confused, and scared of the blaze I dont understand why people say we were fighting.” When Emfuleni Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene everything had been destroyed by the fire. Jimmy Mofokeng, Ward 19 councillor says they have provided the families with food and blankets and are working very hard to make sure that they receive clothing as well. The nine families have since started building a new life for themselves and the children.

Truck crushes steel thief Pinky Mofokeng

BOIPATONG. - Scrap metal theft seems to be a problem in the Boipatong area, mainly near Cape Gate. This admission comes after scavenger Moeketsi Maputse, a 22-year-old man from Sharpeville, was recently killed by a truck on Nobie Boulevard as he tried to offload scrap metal from the speeding vehicle. It is alleged that he jumped onto the speeding truck and started offloading scrap. As he tried to throw the bag down he slipped and fell and the truck apparently ran over his face, smea-

ring his brains on the ground. His face was so mutilated that he was unrecognisable. Police were called to the scene and on arrival found Maputse lying in the middle of the road with his brains scattered all over the road. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene. Police Spokesperson Constable Thembeka Koago confirms that they are investigating a culpable homicide case. Even though police are patrolling in the area the scavengers seem to find a way to steal the metal from the trucks that come to offload Moeketsi Maputse lost his life while trying to steal steel off a moving truck near Cape at nearby scrapyards.. 23yearold sentenced to 25 years Pinky Mofokeng

VEREENIGING -. Magistrate Retha Willemse sentenced Katleho Mpongolo Kok (23) for the gruesome murder of Innocentia Mpho Sefatsa (21) who was stabbed more than 40 times. The wounds were inflicted on her face and body on the night of April 7 of 2012. The case started last year and ended recently at the Vereeniging Regional Court. The bloody affair ended in tears after the murderer allegedly stabbed Sefatsa repeatedly, because she had refused to talk to him. Kok claims that he saw his ex-girlfriend walking with three men from a local tavern at dawn. He demanded to talk to her and she refused which made him angry. He produced a knife and the three men ran away, but Sefatsa was not so lucky. Kok stabbed her face and body more than 40 times. He then carried her body on his

shoulder and walked away. A passerby saw him carrying the body and stopped him.The witness called for help and she was taken to the Sebokeng Hospital where Sefatsa died on arrival. Kok was sentenced to 25 years in prison - 20 years for murder and five years suspended for contravention of the Domestic Violence Act. Magistrate Retha Willemse says, “The suspect showed no respect for the law, He had a court order against him and went against it twice as well as vandalising the Sefatsa home and causing the family to live in fear.” She summated: “You stabbed this young girl over 40 times. This shows that you had no mercy at all and your intention was to kill.” The family is relieved that justice has been done and the deceaseds’ mother Flora Sefatsa says, “I am happy with the sentencing but that won’t bring back my daughter back. His mother can still visit him in prison. What he did to my child is unforgiveable.”

Flora Sefatsa holds a picture of her deceased daughter whom she says did not deserve to die so brutally. Photo: Pinky Mofokeng.

Sixteen years without sewerage ORANGE FARMS. - A service delivery protest erupted in Orange Farms, Drieziek 4 when residents demonstrated their anger by closing the Golden Highway in the early hours of Monday morning. The protest occurred due to a lack of service delivery by the City of Joburg. According to residents, they have been living in Drieziek 4 for years but they do not have proper sanitation, sewerage, water and toilets. They claim that, Drieziek 4 has been ignored by local government. and that Drieziek 3, 5 and 9 are proper structures with running water and sewerage, including tarred roads, street lights and houses. However, when one crosses the road to Drieziek 4, there is nothing. “We still use pit toilets. We have built our own houses, unlike other areas where RDPs were given to people. As for us we are just asking for basic sanitation. Other areas like Drieziek 9 came after

us but we still don’t have toilets,” says Mabheka Mokoena, a community member. Councilor Simon Montha was out of reach when Sedibeng Ster tried to contact him. The community says they will continue with the strike until something happens.

Driver trapped in headon collision Mduduzi Mathebula

EVATON. - A head-on collision left residents shocked on Wednesday afternoon when a ‘super 16’ (siyaya) collided with a Mini Quantum in Evaton on the Old Golden Highway. Two people were rushed to hospital while others were treated for shock at the scene. The accident occurred on one of Evaton’s busiest roads just after the turn from ‘Machineng.’ Driver Darly Kheswa was trapped in the taxi for hours till the rescue team was deployed to the scene and the Jaws of Life were used to free him. It has emerged that an internal

Taxi Association (ITA) taxi had overtaken numerous vehicles before colliding with their oncoming taxi with passengers in it. Bystanders confirm that the ITA taxi driver had been reckless prior to the accident. According to the Vanderbijlpark Taxi Association liaison officer Linda Radebe, Kheswa is stable and recovering in hospital. Bobo Mahlangu from ITA says they are aware of the accident and condemn reckless driving. We sympathise with the Kheswa family in this time. “We as the ITA pray for his speedy recovery,” says Mahlangu.

SEDIBENG. - A taxi carrying school children capsized near Sonland Park last Thursday. Paramedics treated 13 schoolchildren aged between 12 and 15 for minor to moderate injuries. Apparently the driver had lost control of the taxi causing it to roll numerous times on the corner of Skippy Botha and Jimmy Sinclair. After treatment all the

children were taken to different hospitals in the area. Meanwhile a family of seven was stung by bees on Thursday in Meyerton. It is believed this was after the bee hive was disturbed by someone mowing their lawn. Paramedics treated one patient for slight allergic reactions but, fortunately, there was no need to admit any members of the family to a hospital.

ter the first obstacle. One of the strongest causes for this attitude is that they do not believe in themselves. Believing in yourself is all about being sure that you are going to do whatever you want even if others are against you. Usually, when you decide to take a big challenge, or decide to do something that people failed to do, you will find that everyone is putting you down. Under pressure of this criticism some people start to doubt their own abilities and eventually give up. The few people who manage to believe in themselves and who continue moving along the path they’ve chosen are the ones who succeed. A1QP36F

Some people think that unless everyone agrees with them then they are wrong. This is untrue. No one ever succeeds without being rejected. If people think that you are wrong or that your efforts will yield no results then just go against them by either convincing them with your point of view right away or by waiting until they believe in you by force when they see your success. Whatever it takes believe in yourself and people will start to take note and believe in you for you are not expected to live up to their expectations and neither are they. So, for once, start living real and be yourself. Lead and they will definitely follow. Lerato...

Geysers project underway

Pinky Mofokeng

EVATON. - A public meeting was held at the Palm Springs Hall in Section C on Sunday morning to inform residents about a new project that is underway. The community heard that new solar geysers are going to be installed. A private company called Brauns Building Consulting Services led by Tim Brauns received a tender to install geysers around the communities. The initiative has already started in areas. Brauns explained to the community that they would install the geysers for free - no fee would be charged. What is required from the community are their names, identification documents and proof of residential address for approval by Eskom. They would then work from a database supplied by Eskom to install the geysers.

Hygiene programme promoted

Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - Bokantso Primary School children were graced by the Thebe Med Medical Aid Scheme on Friday where learners were ‘pimped’ up with hygiene information and how to save water. Under the theme `cleanliness is close to Godliness’ children were taught how to take care of themselves and respect their teachers and parents. First learners were given a chance to present the importance of speaking out, - how to tell and who to tell. This message was loud and clear to learners: that no teacher in the world has the right to touch a learner inappropriately. Grade 7 learners came up with brilliant ideas that were acknowledged by all their fellows. School principal Nkeseng Tegedi was humbled by the event because it had brought understanding to the learners. He said such an event helped children to keep themselves tidy. Tegedi says basic washing of hands means a lot to healthy hygiene. Learners were very happy and their parents, who were part of the event, were visibly pleased with the aesthetic impulse embraced by the event. Thebe Med Medical Aids Scheme vowed to paint the school, from its roof to all its walls.

Hola ORANGE FARM! I’m Trash! Haha, that’s actually my name. And this is my wife, Treasure. We have great news for you!

The Solar Geyser is a water-heating system that delivers major energy-savings, resulting in substantially lower water heating costs and major cuts in greenhouse emissions. He explained that the installation is easier and a range of frames exist to suit installation on all roof types and pitches with maintenance-free features. Brauns also stated that this initiative is set to see young people from Palm Springs working and garnering the necesarry skills to install geysers. Ward 20 councillor Bongani Ngubane stated that no-one is forced to install the geysers at their homes but advised people to let the contractor install them to help reduce electricty costs. Even though some community members had mixed feelings regarding the solar geysers, they conceded that it was a ‘good initiative’ - “but we don’t want to get rid of our old geysers.”

Wheelchair for Thandi Pinky Mofokeng

SEBOKENG. - Thandi Molefe (55) from Zone 12 has been paralysed from the waist down since 2006 due to spinal TB. Molefe has been bound to her bed and isolated from the world because, whatever she did, someone always had to carry her around. Now she has recieved a wheelchair. She is a mother of two boys and

her husband does everything in the house from cleaning, cooking and bathing her. She says, “My husband has always been good and patient with me. He makes sure that our house is clean and that we always have enough food to eat.” It appears that nobody in the house is employed and their only income is the disability grant she receives every month. Molefe always wan-

ted a wheelchair but did not know who to contact for help. This was until recently, when a concerned neighbour called the relevant authorities to intervene. Xoliswa Madiba, Assistant Manager of Emfuleni Local Municipality, made sure that Molefe got a wheelchair from Shadvaal to make her life easier. Molefe says she feels lucky

7

because wheelchairs are expensive and sometimes people wait forever to get one. The wheelchair has made her life very easy as she can move easily and do some of the house chores herself. The only thing she still has to regain is the confidence she needs to go out and socialise.

Thandi Molefe finally received a wheelchair after eight years of struggling. Pho to: Pinky Mofokeng. Sunnyboy Monnakgotla (left) with members of a net ball team following a recent successful tournament that was hosted by his organisa tion. Photo: Fatima Phiri.

SEDIBENG. - Unemployment is a big issue in South Africa. It has led to crime and the use of illegal substances, yet Sunnyboy Monnakgotla has made the best of his unemployment situation by giving back to the Lakeside community. His dream to help his community began in 2009 when he established a nonprofit organisation (NPO) called Unleash Your Potential Community project. Its aim is to get the youth off the streets by involving them in sporting, artistic and cultural activities offered by the organisation. Monnakgotla has applied for sponsorships to help him undertake community projects but, so far, it has been a lengthy wait. This big-hearted man has not been deterred; he funds his own projects. “I have done a lot for this community and I’m proud. People remember you for the good you have done once you have gone,” he said.

Exprofessionals take to the field Zacharia Nale

SASOLBURG. - Former local soccer greats will go down memory lane with their Soweto’s ‘Keep Fit Soccer League’ counterparts when they meet in the much anticipated ‘Human Rights Month Soccer Tournament.’ As the host - Sedibeng Regional Masters Football Association will come out guns blazing to win this annual soccer tournament, designed for ex-professional players. This special occasion is scheduled to take place at the Flavius Mareka Stadium on March 24. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Sedibeng Regional Masters Football Association publicist Martin Mpholo says this is the only tour-

nament that brings all the ex-professionals together once again after their retirement from football. “This tournament has played an important role to unite ex-professional players in this country. They are looking forward to meeting their former teammates as has been the case for all these years. “The tournament is better and better every year and this year we expect more fun and excitement,” says Mpholo. Some of the ex-professionals who will feature for Sedibeng Regional Masters Football against their ‘Keep Fit Leagues’ counterparts include the likes of Patrick “Mentor” Chacho (Vaal Professionals), Peter “Fire” Khoabane

(SuperSport United), Steve “Chippa” Lekoelea (Orlando Pirates), Jabu “Scara” Mnguni (Vaal Professionals/Orlando Pirates), Ernest “Rambo” Marumo (Vaal Pros), Joseph “China” Masondo (Orlando Pirates) to mention but a few. ‘Keep Fit League’ will look at the likes of Naughty Mokoena (Orlando Pirates), Jhokonia “The Bull” Cibi (Moroka Swallows), Joseph Ngake (Orlando Pirates), Pollen “Trompies” Ndlanya (Kaizer

Chiefs), Killer Mkwanazi (Orlando Pirates) and a host of others. Mpholo appeals to the Sedibeng and Zamdela community to come and watch these former soccer greats in action.

SHOOTING FROM THE HIP With Zacharia Nale There has been talk of the need for a Refereeing Review Committee but we are still waiting for this to happen in local football. For example, week in and week out, teams suffer because of poor refereeing in local football. Some coaches lost their jobs because of this poor officiating but nothing has been done about this situation, which has become a ‘cancer’ in our football. Some of the players are wrongly booked (get yellow or red card) because of these incompetent men in the middle. In recent form – it seems as if referees are the ones that decide the outcome of the

SEDIBENG STER

Give us professional refs not ‘street kids’ game, considering the horrible mistakes they make during matches. Since the beginning of the season, the standard of refereeing leaves much to be desired in this country. It is mistake-after- mistake but nothing has been done to rectify this comedy of errors. They get away with it every time. I have decided to boycott my TV set, especially on Mondays. I avoid listening to SABC Soccer Zone’s referee expert Silvester Ndaba when he does justice to the childish mistakes made by referees in this country. Even my one-month-old beautiful baby girl Bonolo can spot some of the mistakes that match officials fail to see during the games. If we had a Review Committee Shooting From The Hip doesn’t think some of these mistakes would be happening. True! There is no form of punishment for our referees which is why they make mistakes week-in

SHARPEVILLE. - Young and old gathered at the Tswelopele Primary School to participate in the Human Rights Fun Run on Sunday. The event was organised by the Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Sedibeng District Municipality and the Department of Sports to commemorate Human Rights Day in style. The venue was packed to capacity with young and old looking forward to having a funfilled day. It was encouraging to see senior citizens of this region taking part in this event. It was interesting to see people as old as 70 competing with young people.

The streets of Sharpeville came to a standstill with a traffic jam of almost two hours as participants enjoyed the freedom of the road. The excercise “irritated” impatient motorists, especially taxi drivers. However, traffic officers were there to make sure that everything was in order, escorting the runners from the starting point to their finish – Tswelopelo Primary School in Sharpeville. The only disappointment about the event is that – some of the busses arrived very late with the participants and by time they started, the sun was hot, especially for the elders.

and week-out. They do as they please, to say the least. As a result football suffers because of these incompetent match officials. With the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League that started over the weekend – there was also a comedy of errors by the man in the middle. How can a referee officiate the game if he is not properly dressed? This one was wearing long jeans ‘nogal’. This is not funny! It is either that some referees don’t take the Vaal Milling Promotion League seriously, or they don’t take themselves seriously. One or the other! The very same match official expected to be paid after the game despite the fact that he looked like a ‘Hillbrow street kid.’ We

AUTOMARK Certified Used Vehicles

should not allow this to happen to our beautiful game. There are men and women who have worked very hard to get our football where it is today. Why are we allowing these street kids to destroy it just like that? As much as referees expect players and officials to behave in a professional manner – we also expect them to behave in the same way. We don’t need ‘street kids,’ we need professional referees to take our football to another level. Mind you, club officials have invested too much in this game to be treated like that by people from whom we expect much better conduct, which are match officials. No hard feelings. As a journalist I am the eyes and ears of the community.

Eligwa tournament a success

Zacharia Nale

SHARPEVILLE. - Swimming South Africa President Jace Naidoo hailed the Eligwa Swimming Tournament a success. It was held at the Sharpeville Swimming Pool on Saturday. The tournament was a huge success with local children coming in big numbers to participate and was organised by the Eligwa Swimming Club in conjunction with the Emfuleni Local Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality as part of the club’s development project in townships. Naidoo was overwhelmed by the talent displayed by these youngsters during the tournament. “I have no doubt that these children have a great future ahead of them if they get proper

training and guidance. I enjoyed each and every moment watching them competing among themselves. The future of Swimming South Africa looks good if what I saw today is anything to go by,” he says. His sentiments were echoed by Vaal Swimming Association head coach Tsiliso Koatla, who was full of compliments for the organisers. Koatla says the objective of the tournament was to attract more kids to swimming. “I just want to thank all the people who made this tournament a success, especially the local municipality. We managed to attract hundreds of kids to participate in the tournament,” says Koatla. The teams, from as far as Pretoria, Soweto and Sasolburg, came to test their skills against the local lads.

FA Cup to play in Sedibeng Zacharia Nale

BOIPATONG. - Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League teams will participate in the newly launched soccer tournament known as Menza Group Development League Cup. This mouth-watering tournament will take place at the Boipatong Stadium with 16 local soccer teams battling for honours during the Easter holiday. The tournament is organised and sponsored by the Menza Group Company to invest in the development of football in the Sedibeng region. According to the organisers, the competition will play in the form of the FA Cup, involving only the Promotion League teams. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Ndlovu says the competition will cater for 16 Promotion League teams. The tournament will start with a point

system and divide into four streams of four teams each. The team that finishes in position one and two in each group respectively will qualify to play in the quarter finals. “We want to give the teams under the structure a chance to raise funds because most of our teams don’t have sponsors. The club’s owners run the teams from their own pockets,” says Ndlovu. Ndlovu says the prizes will be revealed during the launch of the tournament on March 20. The man behind this initiative is Orlando Pirates administrator Senzo Mazingiza, who started his amateur football with the now-defunct Boipatong Real Rangers FC. The team made history as the first amateur team to qualify for the BobSave Cup last 16. He played alongside Papi Zothwane, Solomon Mathe, Lungisane “Masinga” Ndlela to mention but a few.

Happy days are here again Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Excitement was written all over the faces of Sedibeng soccer fans when the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League teams were in action over the weekend. The league marked its start with some exciting action on Friday night with Sebokeng Ajax FC showing their intentions by clearly beating Vereeniging Old Boys FC 6-2 in an exciting encounter played at Roshnee Stadium on Friday night. It was the same story in all venues where local soccer fans came in numbers to watch this development league. The newly formed Vaal Development Academy also started their season on a high note when they beat Vaal Stars FC 1-0 at the Bophelong Stadium on Saturday. This is one game that will also go down as the best game of the season with both sides showing no respect for one another. However, Vaal Development Academy had some ideas as they managed to seize victory despite all the odds against them.
