Foreigners fear Human Rights Day Lerato Serero

SHARPEVILLE. - Fear, panic and a loss of income is what Human Rights Day activities last Thursday brought to foreign shop-owners in Sharpeville. Following last year’s protests and the looting of their stores (mainly tuck-shops) foreigners apparently decided not to open for business, some from as early as last Monday fearing a repeat of the same scenes that took place last year. Most community members were also left stranded as they could not get hold of the basic essentials that are readily available at these stores.Last year’s lootings and protests stemmed from the movement of the celebrations from the Sharpeville township to Soweto with the community claiming the right to hold them in their township. Members of the community went berserk and looted shops and other businesses. “We were surprised by their actions as most if not all their stores were closed around the whole township. I can understand their fear as they are easy targets of criminals who take advantage of events such as these to vandalise their businesses and rob them,” says a community member. Sedibeng Ster tried without success to solicit comment from the foreigners - for obvious reasons. Another member of the community Jerry Zwane adds that the victimisation of foreigners by locals should be put to an end. “This is not good at all; these people live in constant fear and this must stop. We are all human beings,” he said. With Police at their highest visibility the foreigners, most from Somalia and Pakistan, could be seen loitering in the township, obviously assessing the situation. The celebrations, however, went off without much incident and the shop owners have since gone back to business.

DA commemorates Human Rights Day A request by the DA to host the Human Rights Day celebrations at the old Sharpeville Police Station was apparently rejected. Instead they hosted their event at the African Methodist Church with their leader Helen Zille, and Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko.

March 21 is Sharpeville Day The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) strongly feels that the African National Congress and the government failed the people of Sharpeville and the Vaal when they renamed the day Human Rights Day.

Argument over R15 nearly cost lives Mduduzi Mathebula

Abo ve:This Nissan Hardbo dy was reduced to no thing after an acci dent on Thursday

SEBOKENG. - Zone 3 intersection came to a halt on Thursday due to an accident that caused a major, three-hour traffic jam that left motorists baffled and frustrated. The accident shocked many and left two drivers injured. Apparently an argument over R15 between a taxi driver and the taxi queue marshal led to the mayhem. According to bystanders, the marshal wanted his R15 from a taxi driver who drove through a Nissan Harbody, smashing it. It is alleged that the queue marshal jumped into the taxi and fought with the taxi driver, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The queue marshal allegedly had a knife and tried to stab the driver for the R15 owed to him. “The queue marshal was fuming when he jumped into the taxi. What is unfortunate is that an unnecessary accident resulted,” says an anonymous spectator. The Fire

and Rescue unit, the police, and emergency services were deployed to the scene. Passengers who were in the taxi had to be treated for shock while both drivers of the Nissan Hardbody and Quantum Taxi were treated for head injuries. Police were later told what had happened by eye witnesses. The queue marshal was last seen being escorted to a police van. Both drivers needed medical attention since they were heavily bleeding from the impact of the collision.

Human Rights Day celebrations Pinky Mofokeng

SHARPEVILLE. - For many South Africans, the day will always remain a commemoration of the 21 March 1960 Sharpeville MassaA1QR7JA

cre. This was when Police mowed down 69 unarmed people and injured 180 others who refused to carry the hated ‘dompas’ identity document that was meant only for indigenous Africans. Gauteng joined the rest of South Africa in honouring men and women who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The event was organised by the Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with Sedibeng District Municipality. The day started with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Phelindaba Cemetery, which proceeded to the Sharpeville Monument followed by a 3km march led by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile, Sedibeng District Municipal Executive Mayor Mahole Simon Mof-

okeng, and other Provincial MECs. The march highlighted the plight of women and children against abuse and started at the old Sharpeville Police Station. It navigated its way through the township to the cricket grounds next to the George Thabe Stadium, where the actual event took place. Premier Nomvula Mokonyane says, “This day marks a special milestone in our South African calendar. It is the day on which we remember that tradegy in 1960 in Sharpeville, when our grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters were brutally killed by Police and our apartheid government for fighthing for their rights. We celebrate this day because their blood did not spill for nothing - it brought us freedom, a day called Human Rights Day, in South Africa”.

Comments I was looking at one of the social networks over the past week and I could not believe that one of the bloggers on it wrote my exact thoughts. Her thoughts were about the children that were born after so-called ‘democracy,’ ‘The born-frees’ I could not agree more with the writer when she said that this lot expects things to be han-

ded to them on a silver platter, that they expect to be spoon-fed. This lot do not bother to show initiative when it comes to most things in life and what they know best is how to mooch off others. Yes, the writer is correct when she said this lazy bunch always wants you to feel guilty for being able to pronounce words properly, to feel as though being able to spell or construct a proper sentence means that you are acting as if you are better than they are. SEDIBENG . – The case of suspension against 19 ANC officials and three councillors accused of allegedly being at the forefront of the violent protests in Ratanda last year has been finalised and the suspension has been lifted. The officials were suspended by the Gauteng Executive Committee in terms of the rule 25.12 C of the ANC constitution. The matter was supposed to have been discussed within six months in terms of the ruling. The protest action resulted in the destruction of government property and

Also others that were apparently involved were Mpho Moloi, Thabo Seaga, Teressa Mofokeng, Mandlenkosi Radebe, Percy Sithole, and Themba Motsepe. “I am delighted to be back in the party,” said Nkosi when interviewed by Sedibeng Ster recently. During the period of the suspension Nkosi was apparently a candidate for the Sedibeng regional chairperson’s seat.

SEBOKENG. - Surprise awards were held for Healing Hands Organisation workers on Friday in Sebokeng. Most outstanding employees were granted certificates for their outstanding performance at work. Oupa Shumeni, founder and organisation Managing Director, says surprising the employees for their good deeds is a very heartwarming experience. Shumani says the organisation was established to help the community at large. “This organisation has one objective: to bring life through offering an assisting hand,” he said at the event before handing out certificates. Nozipho Buthelezi, Mon-

gezi Ntshangase and Merriam Motsoetsoe, were the best employees. First to be crowned was Buthelezi , the best writer, while Motsoetsoe was Best Dresser. There was also Ntshangase, who was awarded for his punctuality. Buthelezi says, “It might look like a small thing, but for me it means a lot. I am starting my career with excellent steps in order to work my heart out when I reach the top.” Ntshangase also seconded his colleague, emphasising that dynamites come in small packages. “Working as an auxiliary worker it is not a child’s play to work with a community but it is challenging to change someone’s life,” says Ntshangase.

Miss Emerald paves way for Miss Teen SA

Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Saul Tsotetsi Sporting Complex was full to capacity as crowds converged to see a cluster of the most beautiful young girls across Gauteng on Friday. The girls wanted to be part of the Miss Emerald Valley 2013 in association with Tsogo Sun (Sun International Casino) and Emerald Casino. About 80 girls came in for the audition. Fishy Martin from The Gauteng Academy Models South Africa says coordinating such a big event has always been his goal. The Vaal

lived up to expectations. “We had well attended auditions. The Vaal just put this competition on a higher level. There will be different categories but the ultimate pageant will the Miss Teen South Africa. The final three girls -if not the top five - will be chosen on April 27 in an event hosted by Emerald Casino. The event will be part of Miss SA Teen 2013,” says Martin. Twenty-one girls were chosen and they are listed to face each other on April 27 at the finals where one beautiful girl will be crowned Miss Emerald Vally.

VEREENIGING. - SABC1 is about unearthing and nurturing young talent in Mzansi. The One Day Leader project is a platform the channel has utilised to identify and develop young dynamic leaders of tomorrow. The show focuses the public’s attention on critical social and economic issues. Ndumiso Hadebe, a 21-year-old from Arcon Park, is one of the finalists on the show. Hadebe has done a lot of work to help the community, like being a youth leader at the ‘Word of Life’ Baptist Church, a councillor, and mentoring young people through the word of God, He is involved in a youth organisation in conjunction with Sedibeng East Municipality aimed at empowering young people through workshops driven by education. Hadebe says, “I want to use this platform to serve, inform and inspire a new kind of leader, a new kind of young person and a new generation of young people who are driven to become masters of their own destiny. Success has nothing to do with monetary or material wealth but the ability to make a difference in one person’s life.” Hadebe is currently in his final year at the North West University, studying for a Bcom degree in Economics International Trade.

“Matchbox” Boipatong too many teams SHOOTING FROM THE HIP

With Zacharia Nale Shooting From The Hip is very sympathetic when it comes to the development of sport – especially football - which is regarded as the No 1 sport in the world. They don’t call it a “Beautiful Game” for nothing! But there was nothing beautiful about this sport when Hillside United received three points on a silver platter (a walkover) against The Birds on Sunday. This was sup-

posed to be an exciting Safa Sedibeng Castle Regional League affair between The Birds and Hillsides but turned out to be a disappointing afternoon for local soccer fans. The game was called off by the match officials - especially the visiting team Hillsides - due to the Boipatong Stadium pitch conditions. The decision seemed to be harsh with the local supporters waiting in anticipation for the kick-off but in reality - the venue looked like “garbage” or, should I say, a “pigsty”. There is no way the league match, especially the Castle Regional League match, could play under those conditions. Shooting From The Hip feels sorry for the home team – The Birds FC - for losing a game in that manner – without even kicking the ball. Did I hear somebody say “football is cruel?” No football is not cruel – people who run football are the ones that are heartless, to say the least.

Promotion League bangs in goals Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Whilst the Absa Premier Soccer League strikers failed to score goals here at home, the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League teams banged in goals like they were out of fashion. This was in both streams – A and B. The league has just started but a total exceeding 20 goals have been scored, which is a positive result for the growth of football in this region. Over the weekend, Sedibeng Ster Sport witnessed incredible goals being scored by these up-and-coming Bafana Bafana stars. Expect another flood of “goals”when Liverpool plays against their neighbours in the Boipatong Derby on Saturday. The kick-off is at 13:00. This mouth-watering encounter is expected to produce fireworks with both sides at the summit of the Promotion League in Stream A. This is one encounter that will divide Boipatong into two parts. The rest of the weekend fixtures are as follows:

STREAM STREAM B: Saturday Roots Mighty Boys vs Junior Lions (Zone 15) Mighty Killer vs EYA (Zone 3, 13:00) Ventage FC vs West Ham FC (Sports Centre, 13:00) West FC vs Dream Team (Zone 3, 15:00) Sunday: Tokyo FC vs Roshnee FC (Zone 15:00, 11:00) Zone 10 United vs Moropodi (Zone 7, 11:00) Reki Manyora vs Celta Vigo (Sprots Centre, 13:00) City Stars vs Sebokeng Academy (Zone 15, 15:00)

Stream Stream A: Friday Vereeniging Old Boys vs Vaal Stars (Roshnee, 17:00) VUT FC vs Sebokeng Ajax (Isak Steyl, 17:00) Saturday Young Milano vs MBC FC (George Thabe, 11:00) Liverpool vs Vaal Development Sunday The Birds vs Nale Academy (Boipatong, 11:00) YoungStars vs Vaal Manchester (Boipatong, 15:00)

Shooting From The Hip blames all the teams in Boipatong because they turned this venue into a “pig-sty”. How on earth can more than five teams train in the same venue? I mean, nearly all Boipatong teams use the venue for training and playing purposes. No wonder the pitch looks littered! Mind you, this is the only stadium in Boipatong but the people who run teams in Boipatong don’t give a damn about this venue. Shooting From The Hip was told that company soccer teams in the area also use the venue during the week. There are also Masters soccer teams. Shooting From The Hip always had a problem with these Firm and Masters soccer teams because they play for fun. They are also responsible for the state of this pitch. If I may ask - what do they play for? These are the people who are supposed to coach our youngsters but they think they can still chase soccer balls. Some of them can’t even run

because of their big “tummies” but they play soccer. This must stop! Another problem with Boipatong is that there are too many soccer teams in the area, taking into consideration that Boipatong is just a “matchbox” area. For example, there are four teams that play in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Vaal Milling Promotion League. So can you then expect the venue to be in good condition? Never! Why not only two strong teams that will make the league? This would be interesting, especially when it is a derby match. As things stand now, everyone wants to own a soccer team in Boipatong as if it was a “Pakistani tuck shop.” What happened on Sunday was not a good advert for our football. We don’t want to see teams winning the league with walkovers. Those teams that train at the stadium must go and negotiate with their school principals to use the schools’ facilities.

The revival of boxing begins

Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Local Municipality in conjunction with Marius Lennox, South Africa Boxing Training Judge, will officially launch a boxing club at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14 on April 2. This great news was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by the two parties during a joint press conference at the MooiVaal Media offices this week. Emfuleni Local Municipality was represented by Development sports officer Thandoxolo Madikizela. The boxing club is part of an attempt to revive boxing in Sedibeng. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Lennox said his main worry is the growth of boxing in this region. He says when the likes of Bongani Mahlangu, Gideon Buthelezi and Chris van Heerden, retire from the profession, there will be no-one to replace them because boxing will be dead in Sedibeng. He says there is a need to revive the structure of boxing in this region such as the Sedibeng Boxing Association. “The formation of the club will help revive boxing in this region. If the above-

mentioned boxers leave boxing, who will replace them? This concern motivated us to search for new talent by opening one big boxing club in the Vaal. We will monitor progress and train the coaches,” says Lennox. Madikizela says it should be the municipality’s responsibility to support the growth of sport in our area. “As a municipality we will support this initiative and provide the necessary equipment and facilities. I’m very excited to be part of this initiative and I’m looking forward to the launch on April 2,” says a jubilant Madikizela. According to Lennox they also intend to organise a workshop to train coaches who will work at the gym. He says there is also a serious need to open a boxing gym in the township to train these upand-coming boxers. Meanwhile, a ‘boxing indaba’ is scheduled to take place at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14 on April 6 (see next week’s Sedibeng Ster Sport for more information).

Safa Sedibeng goes international Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The Safa Sedibeng regional soccer team is expected to hoist the Sedibeng flag high when they compete in this year’s 2013 Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament. This youth international tournament is underway at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto. The event has become a major fixture on the junior international football calendar and is one of the most respected tournaments in the u/17 age-group in the world, drawing a superb line-up of teams from across the globe. The international teams to compete are two-time defending champions Club Atletico Mineiro from Brazil, as well as Club Tijuana from Mexico, who are returning to the competition, having been popular participants in 2011. Europe will be represented by English giants Everton, along with top Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, two of the most famous and historic clubs from that continent. There will be a second appearance for the Aspire Academy in Qatar, while regular visitors K-Stars

from Zambia also return. Botswanan-side Young Zebra, who have also been regular visitors, return, while there is a first appearance from the Nigerian outfit Bridge Boys. These eight international teams will be joined by four more teams from Gauteng Province, who all won the right to compete in the international event following the Future Champions Gauteng Cup played earlier this month. SuperSport United won that tournament beating fellow Tshwane-side University of Pretoria on penalties in the final. Safa Sedibeng is the third South African team after they won their place in the international tournament with a semi-final showing at the Future Champions Gauteng Cup recently. The two coaches Master Zondo and Themba Dlamini must be complimented for taking the team to this level. However, it is important to note that Mohloli Secondary School also made Sedibeng region proud when they reached the level last year. Johannesburg Secondary School from Mayfair is the fourth South African side after they went through a lengthy qualification process to reach this stage.
