VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Municipality, Councillor Gretha Hlongwane, and District Mayor, Cllr Mahole Mofokeng, paid tribute at the funeral of former Emfuleni Executive mayor Cllr Johnny Thabane (72) last week. He passed away after a short illness on November 5 in Sharpeville. He was discribed as a teacher, politician and selfless community worker. His funeral service was held at the AME Church in Sharpeville and he was laid to rest at the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery on November 9. Cllr Mofokeng said Thabane was one of the great soldiers and must be remembered for all the good he has do-

On her way to stardom!

VAALPARK. - A huge treat awaits all lovers of science fiction movies when XJ1 First Contact is released in mid 2014. And the cherry on top is that a Vaal Triangle beauty, Veronique Rabe, will be seen in the female lead role. Veronique, Vaalpark Articon’s head girl in 2011, was born on April 21 1993 in Vereeniging and joined a ballet school from the age of five. At the age of 16 her dance ability was recognised at Vaalpark Articon and she was entered into the South African Championships of Performing Arts in 2010. At this event she achieved the highest honour in the Dance Category, being awarded the South African Grand Champion Award for Dance. For the last few years Veronique has been training and teaching at the Centre Stage Dance Academy with principal teacher Ill-Rika Davis. At school she diversified her interests and received first place for Public Speaking as well as being crowned Miss Vaalpark Articon. Veronique also completed violin Grade 3

through Trinity College and Singing and Theory Grade 5 through the University of South Africa (Unisa). She has a passion for Drama, receiving a Distinction in Grade 12 under the guidance of her teacher, Mr Nicholae Laric. The movie XJ-1 First Contact is an original story that is being put into production by Eternal Film Productions (PTY) Ltd. The script was developed to capture the attention of an international audience. Although many independent film makers exist in South Africa, not many are recognised internationally. Furthermore, no one in South Africa has ever attempted to film a drama with such a technological background and science fiction flavour. The story takes many twists and turns and eventually comes down to a virtual battle between good and evil, where everything is on the line and sacrifices have to be made. Willie, wat kolonkanker gehad het, het verlede week weens longontsteking in die Groote Schuur-hospitaal gesterf. Hy was ‘n voormalige hoofseun van die Hoërskool Heilbron en het hom in die 1980’s,

na voltooiing van sy studies in ekonomie aan die Potchefstroomse Universiteit, in Vanderbijlpark gevestig. Buiten dat hy van jongs af by verskeie gemeenskapsorganisasies, skole en sy kerk betrokke was, het hy hom ook gou as sakeman van formaat bewys. Hy het onder meer belange in studente-werkverskaffing en eiendomsontwikkeling gehad en veral bekendheid verwerf met die ondernemings Dopshop en Ultrablits. Hy was in die vroeë 1990’s voorsitter van die Vanderbijlpark Sakekamer en het

baie bygedra om plaaslike sakelui te help om hul ondernemings te laat groei. “Hoewel hy die Vaaldriehoek in die middel 1990’s verlaat het om ‘n studentebehuisingsprojek in die Kaap te begin, was sy en Riana se deur altyd oop vir besoekende vriende uit die Vaal,” sê mnr. Dit het ook gelei tot ‘n taamlik ernstige ongeluk op die hoek van Pasteur en Faradayboulevard. Demarcation Board must give reasons for Midvaal Metro Freddie Peters, Chairperson of Midvaal/Lesedi Stakeholders Committee writes: Following consultation with senior legal advisors, we have now formally requested the Municipal Demarcation Board to provide their reasons for the Midvaal Metro decision. We will then formulate our court application to have the decision set aside. This will be a costly action and we will need organised support and contributions from numerous stakeholders. We will formalise our present Stakeholders Committee in the Midvaal/Lesedi area and probably rename it to People Against the Metro, based on a clear terms of reference. This will make it possible for organisations countrywide to affiliate to the organisation. People Against the Metro will then take part as an organised group in the litigation against the Municipal Demarcation Board. We already have the order of 200 NGO’s at present, represented by our Stakeholders Committee. It is important to note that the DA, as a political party, is only one of the stakeholders and that our actions are based on the provisions of the Municipal Demarcation and Structures Acts.

Die goeie ou dae

Dit is altyd met sterre in my oë wat ek kan sit en luister wanneer die ouer generasie praat oor die dae to hulle nog kinders was. Dit is vir my verstommend as ek hoor hoe hulle tot laat snags kon rond dwaal in die strate, hoe hul altyd sommer geloop het na die fliek toe in die aande en op ‘n Sondag was dit die lekkerste lekker om saam met hul kêrels of nooiens van vroeg-oggend af deur die strate te wandel en “window shopping” te doen. Daardie dae moes die seuns behoorlik hul self bewys voor hul by die streng pa’s verby kon kom om by hul dogters te kuier. Dit is so lekker om te hoor hoe die seuns die opsit-kers gedokter het sodat dit langer sou vat om uit te brand – net vir die ekstra paar minute saam met hul meisies. My ma vertel my altyd hoe opgewonde sy geraak het oor haar R5 sakgeld wat sy elke Vrydag gekry het. Met ‘n R5 kon mens so baie gedoen het daardie tyd en dit was meer as genoeg vir ‘n tienermeisie. Dit voel vir my of ek stories hoor van ‘n ander wêreld, waar misdaad minimaal was en mens altyd ‘n vriendelike gesig raak ge-

loop het. ‘n Wêreld waar die seuns op die harde manier geleer het om mans te word en die meisies met hope respek behandel is. Ek is seker dat daar natuurlik ook slegte dinge gebeur het in daardie tye, daar was sekerlik ook nou en dan iemand wat uit sy kassie uit geklim het en die rus versteur het. Daardie persoon was dan die regte straf opgelê en het vinnig geleer wat ontoelaatbaar was. Dan wonder ek… sou dit nie wonderlik wees om te leef in ‘n land waar kinders weer vrylik kan buite speel nie. Waar ons op ‘n Saterdag middag met ‘n fiets die strate kan leer ken sonder om te vrees vir ons veiligheid. Waar die winkels op ‘n Sondag hul deure sluit omdat Sondae die dag vir rus is. Waar tok-tokkie die ergste katte-kwaad is wat kinders aanvang. Dit klink soos ‘n droomland wat nog nie ontdek is nie. Ek sal egter aanhou hang aan die lippe van die generasie wat bevoorreg genoeg was om deel te hê aan die nie-so-lank-gelede tyd toe vrede vrees oorheers het. Met ‘n gebed in my hart en ‘n glimlag op my mond kan ek net dink… eendag.

Ongoing issue with municipal account Three times I asked for a full recon of my accounts - to date zero. I have dealt with a Mr Shakes Moyane, Mr Teboho Morobi and now Millicient Nthabeleng Motsoa from Customer Care. The latest issue has also been referred to Mantsie Mobote from `Business Connexions’, an independent company that assists the municipality by advising and giving them access to their accounting systems, I was told by Ms Mobote - no doubt at a huge cost to the ratepayers. My latest, abovementioned issue and frustration is a water account received in August to the amount of R13 245, which is absolute rubbish. I am told that they cannot read our meter, but I continuously send readings and phone them in - the last ones were sent to Mantsie Mobote and Ms Motsoa, as instructed by them. I took the necessary photos of my meter, sent them to both persons and neither of these people have come back to me or resol-

ved my issue. I have not received my statements for this month either and have requested that they be sent to me. I am a 63-year-old pensioner and have been a ratepayer in Vereeniging since 1986, and have never received such shabby treatment. I used to attend all the public meetings organised within our ward regularly but stopped since the last meeting on 18th September 2012. None of the issues raised at any of these meetings were ever addressed. I sat at the above meeting attended by Sam Shabalala, who assured everyone that he would be giving personal attention to issues on the agenda, one of them being complaints about service delivery and billing. They were appointing a brand new Customer Care Manager at a huge figure (I read the newspapers), who would be tasked with handling customer issues. This function has now called in assistance from Business Connexions, it appears - and the accounts are

no better. Mr Shabala in fact assured us that we could call him personally - to no avail, I might add. I am not the only pensioner who has constant battles over accounts and at one time the DA area representative undertook to try and sort out combined accounts for the oldies. My perception has now become that the pensioners are being targeted to get them to sell their homes and move, as they can no longer cope with all their expenses, increased assessment rates and crazy billing. I would hope that someone can change my perception. I also highlight that, at the meeting in September 2012, regarding the issue of joint actions that could be taken by ratepayers to try and address their ongoing complaints, we were advised that actions could only be taken via the SAHRC who have the mandate to promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights, and monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

Mr GA Welman of Three Rivers writes: I am addressing my communication to the Gauteng Provincial offices, the Emfuleni Municipal Manager, the DA Representative at Emfuleni, the mayor of Sedibeng, the SAHRC and the newspapers in the Vaal area, in the hope that my issue will be dealt with. I need to highlight to all parties concerned that in my opinion the Emfuleni Municipality is not capable of managing their accounts function. Please understand that deciding to write this letter was not done in the spur-ofthe-moment. I have taken time to write this email. I have, since November 2010 been tortured by the Emfuleni Municipal accounts department with continually incorrect accounts for exorbitant amounts. These have cost me time and money each time I go in to the municipal offices to have these issues rectified, not to mention my perpetual state of anxiety. Birthday boy proves doctors wrong! VEREENIGING. - When 18-month-old Kegan Holl was diagnosed with cancer in June 2009, his parents were told to prepare for the worst and that he most likely wouldn’t celebrate his second birthday that October. But this little warrior proved everyone wrong and celebrated his sixth birthday this week at Rio Sol Portuguese Restaurant. “This birthday party is very special to me as Kegan was the very first beneficiary of Rio Sol’s Charity Fundraiser in 2009,” says Sandy Cipriano, the brain behind the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer initiative and local business woman. Since 2009 Rio Sol, owned by Sandy and her husband, has hosted a charity fundraiser for children with cancer. In 2009, R5 000 was raised and it was used for a special car seat for Kegan, as well as special mattresses for his bed and pram. The Rio Sol Charity Fundraiser has grown from strength to strength. In 2012 Sandy registered Cupcakes of Hope, a Non Profit Company, and they hosted South Africa’s first National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer. This is a totally community-driven project and the aim is to create awareness and raise funds for children with cancer. They do this through their love of baking cupcakes.

“Cupcakes of Hope has been able to assist more than 100 children this year. The funds raised go towards paying for their medical treatments, travelling costs, school fees, birthday celebrations and day-to-day expenses. We also do hospital visits and spoil the patients and staff with lovely cupcakes. It is amazing to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they see a cupcake,” says Sandy. Cupcakes of Hope has also donated to 13 different charities like CHOC, Cansa TLC, The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust and The Sunflower Fund. More than 900 volunteers worked on the day and 2 000 bakers baked and donated 100 000 cupcakes. VANDERBIJLPARK. - “Ek is nederig dankbaar oor my verkiesing maar ook opgewonde oor die rol wat die Vanderbijlpark Sakekamer deur ons affiliasie met die AHI op nasionale vlak kan speel.” Só sê mnr. Klippies Kritzinger, voorsitter van die Vanderbijlpark Sakekamer, oor sy onlangse verkiesing tot die Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHI) se raad. Klippies was ‘n onderwyser in Kimberley voordat hy in 1989 met die Vaaldriehoek kennis gemaak en by Clencor Skoonmaakdienste aangesluit het. Vyf jaar daarna was hy besturende direkteur van die maatskappy. Hy is sedert 2002 lid van die Vanderbijlpark Sakekamer en tans voorsitter van dié groot en invloedryke kamer. Wat sien hy as sy belangrikste rol in die Sakekamer, veral nou met sy nuwe verpligtinge in die AHIraad? “My primêre rol binne die Sakekamer is om ‘n netwerk te skep waar besighede kan groei. “Om dit reg te kry moet ons as Sakekamer netwerkgeleenthede skep, sprekers kry wat ons besighede tot voordeel strek asook om ons samewerking met die plaaslike raad op so ‘n vlak te kry dat beleggings na ons gebied gelok kan word. Ons moet ook deur die groei van besighede en mentorskapprogramme sorg dat werkskepping in ons streek bevorder word,” sê hy. Maar wat beteken dit vir die Vaaldriehoek om ‘n verteenwoordiger uit ons gebied in die AHI-raad te hê? “My grootste doel is om ons streek te verteenwoordig, beleggings te lok en ons streek op nasionale en internasionale vlak te bemark,” sê Kippies. “Wat baie belangrik is, is die feit dat ons sakekamer vir vier jaar in ‘n ry die Presi-

SEBOKENG. - The Institute of Chemical and Biotechnology (ICBT) is a unit within the Technology Transfer and Innovation (TTI) at VUT, which initially received its mandate from the Faculty of Applied and Computer Science. The ICBT has since stretched to include all other faculties and the community in the region, said Professor Irene Moutlana, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). The Sedichem Product Showcase was recently hosted at the Educity, VUT campus, Sebokeng. Sedichem is a business and chemical technology incubator which offers entrepreneurs the opportunity for the commercialisation of chemical products and services. A non-profit enterprise incorporated Sedichem under section 21 of the Companies Act. Sedichem was established with the focus of creating small-to-medium enterprises in the downstream sectors of the chemical industry, she said. It includes men-

toring, coaching, product development and graduation. The Sedichem Chemical and Business Technology Incubator was established by the Gauteng provincial government through the Sedibeng District Municipality. Prof Moutlana confidently allowed Prof Sekomeng Modise to manage the incubator that draws most of its incubatees from Sebokeng. Prof Modise also brought the ideas forward for incubation and commercialisation. The VUT was granted the bid to manage the incubator by the Sedichem Board and the Gauteng Department of Economic Development on the basis of the vision and mission of the VUT. The VUT has taken a broader approach of accommodating projects and SMEs that are strategic and relevant to the national priorities of the government. At a recent introduction event, the audience was taken on tour to the stalls of Green Eden nursery, farming, indigenous plants, skin cream lotion, chemicals and soft porridges.

30 year global bond bull about to die “Zero interest rates and quantitative printing of money will not last forever “says Gerbrand Smit of N-e-FG Fund Management (Pty) Ltd. “We have warned for some time now that the latter will eventually come to an end”. He points out that in May this year, the US Treasury market signalled the start of what is likely to be a long period of rising yields. The announcement made by the US Federal Reserve was that it was considering reducing their current bond buying program of $85 billion. N-e-FG does,

however,believe that the Fed will be extremely careful in reducing its stimulus and will only do so if the underlying economy is healthy enough. A return to more normal interest rate policies will lead to rising yields in the developed world. This will spread to developing countries where interest rates and bonds will also rise in an attempt to compete for the global

savings pool. Currencies that benefitted from the current search for yield will resultantly come under pressure. This is already visible in terms of the South African local currency which by the way is one of the so called fragile five (5 worst Twin Deficits). The rand has already weakened materially in anticipation of these changes while South African bond yields kicked higher. Smit says in

It is highly likely that returns from bonds will be poor; although the outlook for equity markets in a normalising interest rate environment is more debateable. “Because of the latter we think it would be unwise to drop exposure to equities too early. Dit ontwikkel die brein en fyn motoriese vaardighede op verskeie maniere,” sê Christina. “Dit leer hulle dissipline en deursettingsvermoë en bou terselfdertyd hul self-

vertroue,” sê sy. Min mense weet dat kleuters van so jonk as vier jaar reeds ‘n musiekinstrument kan bemeester en dat hulle musieknote kan interpreteer selfs voordat hulle gewone skrif kan lees. Snaarinstrumente word in verskillende groottes vervaardig, dus kan kinders selfs van kleins af leer om die groot instrumente soos die dubbelbasviool en tjello te bespeel. “Ek glo dat daar baie meer in musiek-maak steek as net die kolletjies op ‘n musiekblad. Musiek kan selfs help om stres te verlig en emosionele trauma te genees. Ek sien elke

student voor my as ‘n unieke persoon met ‘n unieke agtergrond en onbeperkte potensiaal. Wanneer my studente my ateljee verlaat, wil ek sien dat almal se ogies skitter,” sê Christina. Sy beplan om vanaf Januarie musiekopleiding in Drie Riviere, Arconpark en Vanderbijlpark aan te bied. Sy fokus op opleiding in viool, tjello, kontrabas, klavier en musiekteorie. ‘n Spesiale program vir kleingoed tussen 4 en 6 jaar sal ook aangebied word. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Die Vaal Region Fotoklub en die VDB Adventure-groep, in samewerking met Vaalweekblad, het die afgelope jaar verskeie opwindende uitstappies en projekte onderneem. Daar was onder meer die 4x4-groep se hulpprojek-uitreike na Lesotho en nog twee lekker toere lê voor: een na Pilanesberg op 29 November (reeds vol) en een in Desember wanneer die groep ‘n toer deur Botswana onderneem, wat ‘n besoek aan Chobe gaan insluit. Volgens toerleier Christi Nolte gaan hulle tydens dié toer oor die grens in Na-

mibië in en beplan om deur die Caprivi-strook te reis. Christi beplan om toerlede na geskiedkundige plekke soos Fort Doppies te neem, wat nog deel van die SA Weermag was. “Daar is nog plek vir dié toer en toerlede word aangeraai om vroegtydig te bespreek om teleurstelling te voorkom. Die toer is so beplan dat kinders dit ook sal geniet en Pa kan boonop lekker in die sand en rivierlope met sy 4x4 speel. Skoon geriewe op al die kampplekke is beskikbaar,” sê Christi. Die vereiste is ‘n 4x4voertuig en kamptoerusting. Groot klem gaan ook val op fotografie en op hierdie ritte sal daar

kenners wees om met fotografie te help, sowel as ‘n opgeleide gids om al die veld- en natuurinligting te verskaf. Toere wat vir volgende jaar beplan word, is onder meer een in April na Botswana, Sentraal-Kalahari en die panne. Daar word ook ‘n “mannetrip” vir Pa en Seun beplan, waartydens die groep na die die Kutsewoestyn en Sentraal-Kalahariwoestyn gaan ry. Die kore het by die Vaaldriehoekse Kunswedstryd, sowel as die Vaaloewerkunswedstryd deelgeneem en A++ simbole vir hul onderskeie items verwerf. Die kore het ook vir die National Eisteddfod Academy opgetree en goud en ‘n diploma verwerf. Die dogterskoor het die jaar op ‘n hoogtepunt afgesluit deur as die Nasionale Eisteddfod Akademie se streekwenners aangewys te word.

Sedibeng Ringbal presteer Die onderskeie Sedibeng Ringbalspanne het onlangs by die SA-Skole Toernooi wat in Kroonstad gehou is puik presteer. Die onderskeie prestasie wat behaal is sluit in: D.o/11 - 5de plek; d.o/13- eerste plek; d.o/15 A1 - eerste plek; d.o/15 A2 - 4de plek; s.o/17 A1 - eerste plek en s.o/17 A2 - derde plek. Onder die individuele prestasies was daar ook uitblinkers. Kayla Abbott, Liandi van Wyk (Speler van die Toernooi), Anjenet Bezuidenhout ( SA kaptein) en Chelbe Botha (SA Presidentspan) is vir die d.o/11 SA-span gekies. ‘n Ster in wording Zian de Jager van die Laerskool Emfuleni park in Vanderbijlpark se kriekettalente ken geen einde nie. Dié boorling van die Vaal driehoek se vernuf en leierskap op die krie ketveld het onlangs vir hom ’n plek in die Gauteng o.13krieketspan besorg. Hy het die afgelope naweek dié span op die veld aangevoer.

Die eerste krieketspan van die Ankerskool in Vanderbijlpark is as die derde liga kampioen gekroon nadat hy die Hoërskool Transvalia in die plaaslike hoërskole krieketliga met 8 paaltjies geklop het. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Lê vandag die boustene vir môre se sukses. Gemeet aan die Hoërskool Driehoek se krieket-welslae op o.14vlak lyk die skool se toekoms in dié sportsoort rooskleurig. Die Hoekies se o.14A- en o.14B-krieketspan is vroëer as die Vaaldriehoek-krieketkampioene in hulle onderskeie ligas gekroon en het daarmee bewys dat hulle ’n belegging vir die toekoms is. Die o.14A-krieketspan het die Hoërskool Dr. Malan van Meyerton met 93 lopies geklop. Die B-span het Gimmies oortuigend in die eindstryd geklop. Die Hoekies het eerste gekolf en 162/5 in 25 beurte aangeteken en daarna die Dokkies vir slegs 72 lopies uitgeknikker. Die Hoekies se dogterskrieketspan het dit drie uit drie gemaak toe hulle vir die derde opeenvolgende jaar as die top dogters-krieketspan in die Vaaldriehoek gekroon is. Driehoek het in die eindstryd teen Transvalia te staan gekom wat geweeg en te lig gevind is. Die Hoekies het 127/3 in 25 beurte aangeteken danksy ’n spogbeurt deur Nina Fourie (60). Valia is daarna met die einste Fourie (4/8) aan die spits vir slegs 55 lopies uitgeboul. Wat die senior spanne betref, het die tweede seuns-krieketspan tot die eindstryd deurgedring terwyl die eerste span die C & L B-afdeling gewen het.

Die Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark se o.14krieketspan is die Vaaldriehoekwenner.

Links: Brendon Hat tingh, kaptein van die Hoërskool Driehoek se eerste krieketspan, glimlag van oor tot oor nadat sy span die C&L 20/20reeks se Bafde ling gewen het. Hier oorhandig Andrew Nell van C&L die trofee aan Brendon. Die Hoërskool Driehoek se dogterskrieketspan na hul sege in die plaaslike krieketiga.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - In jou geestesoog sien jy Suid-Afrika se volgende Amanda Coetzer of selfs die wêreld se volgende Rafael Nadal in aksie. Geklee in ’n Nike-gewaad van kop tot tone en gewapen met hulle tennis-ikone se nuutste maniertjies en geite het die room van die Vaaldriehoek se junior tennis die naweek kragte gemeet. Die eindstryde van die Vaal Distrik Junior Tennis Kampioenskap is Vrydag en Saterdag by die Vaal Tennisklub in Vanderbijlpark beslis. Jaarliks lewer die raketswaaiers tennis uit die boonste rakke op en vanjaar was geen uitsondering nie. Mens wil jouself amper verstout om te sê dat 2013 ’n besonderse oes is. In die seuns en dogters enkelspel vir o.10’s het Renier Nel en Dane Engelbrecht met die louere weggestap. Die klein Napoleon van die tennisbaan, Ethan Terblanche, se houespel van die basislyn was een te veel vir Marno du Plessis in die o.12-seunsenkelspel. Anri Murdoch het Andres-Gail Cadwell in die dogters o.12-titel uitgestof. In die o.14-afdeling het Vian Boshoff en Larise Nel koning gekraai. Alyssa Erxleben en Dewald Spies het die o.16-titels gebuit gevolg deur Petrich Louw wat Tiaan Peens in die o.18-afdeling uitgestof het.
