Hart eis bekende in motorkringe VANDERBIJLPARK. - ‘n Bekende sakeman van die Vaaldriehoek, mnr. Chokkie Wessels, het op 30 Julie onverwags aan ‘n hartaanval gesterf. Hy was vir 30 jaar in vennootskap met mnr. Johan van Tubbergh, wat nege jaar gelede afgetree het. Chokkie was met sy afsterwe alleeneienaar van Wessels en Van Tubbergh Dienssentrum. Chokkie is in Vanderbijlpark gebore en het sy skoolloopbaan ook hier voltooi. Hy was vir 16 jaar bestuurder van New Vaal Dienssentrum voordat hy en Johan in 1985 Wessels en Van Tubbergh se deure geopen het. “Chokkie het ‘n hart van goud gehad. Mense

wat hom geken het sal daarvan getuig,” sê sy vrou, Edna. Sy sê hulle het die Woensdagaand voor sy dood gaan slaap en sy het niks vreemd opgemerk nie. “Chokkie was glad nie siek nie. VANDERBILLPARK. - Women should be loved, respected and honoured all year round and not only during Women’s Month. This was revealed at the recent Girlology Workshop. Girlology is a three hour workshop presented at universities, colleges and various educational facili-

ties. Karen Burt, the founder of Girlology said the word means the ultimate guide to surviving and thriving as a girl. “These workshops are sponsored by Kotex. The aim is to empower young women, by teaching them skills on how to deal with their day-to-day challenges and how to love and respect themselves as young girls,” Burt said. These workshops are aimed

to reach all young girls in and outside the country. The message during the workshop is that young women are in charge of their lives, bodies and choices. “Through the right choices, girls can break away from negative thoughts and beliefs that don’t serve them. “At the Vaal University of Technology it was the first of its kind and we

reached 1000 female students. We are proud to say our girls were truly empowered”. Some of the students stated that they felt very blessed as the workshop truly communicated to them as individuals. “We now know who we are, we don’t need any validation from men,” the students concluded.

BARRAGE. - “Many people in society say they care while many claim to possess faith in a higher power and many even pretend to care. But the acid test of these intentions reveal their true source.” These are the words of Reverend Altus Carstens of the Sasolburg Methodist Church. “Some helped to be seen and noticed by others. Some help because they really care,” says Carstens. Ledibohong Primary is situated about 19km out of Sasolburg. It is a farm school but the community jumped in to help this small school with 47 children and three teachers - from the crèche to Grade 6. There was only one toilet in working condition for all the people on the premises.

The doors of the classrooms were broken. There were no toys for the little ones in the crèche and no educational equipment such as balls, skipping ropes, cricket bats, balls and netballs. The community opened their hearts to this project. “When we first started our Ledibohong Project the task seemed impossible but the community came and their contribution made the impossible, possible,” says Carstens. The Benevolence Committee of the church made it possible for them to tell the forgotten people that they are remembered and noticed and even loved. Ledibohang Primary School situated 19km outside Sasolburg was in a sad state and the community helped to uplift and upgra de the school.

‘Take Charge Campaign’ by MEC Mahlangu Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Gauteng Department of Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu on behalf of Premier David Makhura has urged residents of Sebokeng not to look away when acts of crime happen in their areas. Mahlangu spoke boldly to the masses at a very intensive and hotly debated event at the Zone 7 Stadium on Thursday. The stadium was packed to capacity and all delegates honoured the invitation of the Department: “We are here as the provincial government to commit ourselves to playing a

role to make sure crime becomes history in South Africa. Turning a blind eye and saying ‘It doesn’t affect me’ is very wrong. Crime affects everyone, rich or poor.” Mahlangu further called on communities to declare war on corruption and bribery, and make this province safe. Community Safety MMC Veli Mcera urged the communities to refrain from buying stolen goods because people who do so are no different from those who steal: “Drive out criminals in our communities. Crime stops with you.” Reverend Gift Moerane, for Faith-Based Organisations, said it was time people re-

claimed the streets from criminals. “Stop buying back-door stuff or stolen goods as people die when criminal acts take place.” Amongst those in support of the campaign were Safa CEO Mr Dennis Mumble, Izinduna, labour, traditional leaders, arts and recreation and others, community policing forums (CPF’s). Shack fire kills five Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARM. - A dark cloud covered Orange Farm residents on Sunday morning when they discovered that five youngsters died in a fire. Mduduzi Magagula (3) was found burnt beyond recognition. He was the youngest among the deceased. Tshepo Magagula (7), Nkululeko Magugala (6), Busisiwe Magaguala (8) and the oldest, Lilian Magagula (17) were all burnt to death when their shack caught fire. The incident happened in the early hours of the morning. Johannesburg Emergency Services confirmed number of children killed by the fire. Apparently there were no adults present at the time and Police tried to establish whether the children lived alone, and if the 17-year-old was raising the little ones, or whether their parents were away. Captain Johannes Motsiri, police spokesperson confirmed that an inquest has been opened. “On preliminary investigations we found that all five children were deceased as declared by the emergency personnel. The cause of the fire is still a mystery. A full

Ster spoke to Emfuleni Station Officer Elizabeth Mateki about shack fires. She pleads with communities, especially the most vulnerable who live in shacks and informal settlements around the city, to be very careful with their heating and lighting, especially candles and paraffin stoves. “Don’t leave them unattended, even for a few minutes,” says Mateki.

Local librarian champions literacy learning

This Women’s Month, we chat with Marina van Wyk who has spent more than three decades dedicated to spreading a love of reading amongst others. Not just on Women’s Day, but every day of the year, Marina van Wyk holds up the torch to inspire women in Emfuleni to drive literacy change in the community. As LIASA Librarian of the Year 2013 and Assistant Manager of Sport, Arts, Culture, Library and Information Services in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Marina oversees 15 community libraries and has been in the library industry for over 34 years. Marina places high value on reading programmes at libraries for all ages, as well as on Early Childhood Development program-

mes, where caregivers are trained and receive the right resources to help their children become readers from early on. She says one of the highlights of her career was the establishment of reading circles for the newly literate and seeing the expressions of parents talking about their experience of going home and reading a story to their children for the first time. Having struggled with epilepsy from a young age, Marina has had to overcome a number of obstacles in her life. Unable to obtain a bursary, she worked for years to pay for her professional education. She found solace in books and stories, which played an important role in her life. In addition to books, Marina says she has also been inspired by successful and passionate female teachers and colleagues around her: “I can think of so many women who have inspired me, especially my language teachers who emphasised the importance of reading from a very young age.” Another inspirational point for her was working with the Nal’ibali Reading-for-Enjoyment Campaign: “I was so inspired by them that I immediately agreed we get the training for all our libraries in order to have them participate in this beautiful and creative programme that uses stories and reading to spark children’s potential.” Today, Emfuleni’s community libraries form part of Nal’ibali’s national network of library partners. Driven by the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa (PRAESA), the Nal’ibali campaign works with caregivers, libraries and communities to make stories and reading a part of everyday life to drive a culture of reading in South Africa.

“Regular encounters with books and reading in informal spaces such as libraries and reading clubs are a proven way to ignite a love of stories in children,” explains Thulile Seleka, Nal’ibali Programme Manager. “And as research shows, children who love to read and who are read to by caring adults, are more likely to do well at school. That is why people like Marina are a vital part of our approach to getting the nation reading for joy.” Marina runs various innovative literacy development programmes at her libraries, including a storytelling programme with

Nal’ibali. Her goal is to have community libraries in Emfuleni care for children of all ages; where the youth, adults, senior citizens, all feel equally welcome – irrespective of the diversity of their needs. “It is a dream for now, but not impossible,” concludes the librarian. “I want to be able to say that I have contributed to a community of readers in Emfuleni. We’re striving to support women and children who love books and stories, and who spread the message of the importance of books and reading for all people.”

Die perfekte koeksister in Noordwes en die Noord-Kaap het uit Parys gekom. Willa en Johanna Rademeyer van Parys is as die wenners aangewys. Frieda Nel van Stella en Barbara Kotze van Leeudoringstad het onderskeidelik tweede en derde gekom. Mev. Kinnie Yssel van die Vroue Landbou-unie (VLU) in Potchefstroom het die koeksisters beoordeel en 22 bakkers het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. VEREENIGING. - Expect top runners when Rand Water hosts the Vaal Triangle Cross Country Championship at Rand Water this Saturday. The day’s programme starts at 10:00. The event is hosted by the Rand Water Athletics Club in conjunction with the Vaal Triangle Athletics Club. Some of the top clubs, who have since confirmed their participation - according to Sandile Ncala - includes Emfuleni, the Vaal Athletics Club, Nedbank, VUT and the Mittal Athletics Club, to mention just a few. The red-hot favourites in the sub-junior category are Mpho Molaetsa and, in the masters section, is

evergreen Ernest Tjela, who won the SA 21km championship last week in Port Elizabeth. Ncala says they are expecting stiff competition with big-name runners set to take part in this meeting come Saturday: “I’m looking forward to the exciting cross country championship because many local runners have shown interest in participating. This is one event that tests athletes’ characters and their level of fitness going to the next level. I can’t wait for Saturday to see the best-of-the-best in the Sedibeng region when it comes to cross country in all divisions – both boys and girls, and senior men, women and veterans.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Isak Steyl Stadium was recently a hive of activity for elderly people when Gauteng’s provincial Department of Sports hosted the ‘Active Aging’ Games. It was a fun-filled day for elders who converged from various Sedibeng NGOs. Some of the sporting activities in which they participated were athletics and soccer, to mention

but two. The most interesting part was during Athletics, which showed some of them looking strong and healthy. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, some old people said it has been a while since they participated in this kind of activity. They said they were grateful to the Department of Sports and Recreation for organising such an initiative.

antenna record attempt SASOLBURG. - On September 5 the Sasolburg Radio Club invites one and all to their 50 year celebrations and join them at the Amateur Radio Festival to be held at Fakkelskool. This festival aims to showcase the best amateur radio has to offer. The club invites all groups and all “retired” and inactive radio amateurs to come to this festival. All amateurs are invited to bring and brag with their achievements and projects. Anything that will “wow” the crowd. There will be prizes for the various categories. Gates open at 06:00. Entrance is R20 per person. Food and drinks will be available and fires will be burning from 11:00 for those interested in a braai. Exhibitors must contact the club for arrangements. The exhibitors, clubs and organisations will receive a certificate of participa-

tion. There will also be a flea market. A grand 500m antenna will be installed to attempt to set the largest antenna record. The club invites as many as possible radio transmitter stations whether mobile, portable handheld and field stations to operate on HF, VHF, UHF and microwave. At 13:00 everyone present will be asked to transmit simitaneously for three minute. It will be recorded on a wideband spectrum analyser. Tekkiefees om die draai VEREENIGING. - Die dae word afgetel tot een van die grootste kultuur gebeurtenisse op Vereeniging se kalender: Vereeniging Gimnasium se jaarlikse Tekkiefees. Dié fees beloof om soos gewoonlik meer as genoeg vermaak vir jonk en oud te bied. Die Tekkiefees vind op 4 en 5 September by die skool plaas. Dit is die tweede keer wat dié fees plaasvind nadat Hoërskool Vereeniging en HTS Vereeniging saamgesmelt het. Kunstenaars soos Steve Hofmeyr, Kurt Darren, Gerhard Steyn, Snotkop, die Flooze en vele meer gaan optree. Toegang beloop R70 vir volwassenes en R40 vir kinders. Daar sal genoeg veilige parkering wees sodat jy met ’n geruste hart lekker makietie kan hou.

Ons is almal terdeë bewus van beurtkrag, en hoeveel hierdie ongevraagde onderbroke kraglewering ons kos: Fabrieke kom tot stilstand elke keer, maar werkers moet vir daardie tyd betaal word, bestellings kan nie betyds afgelewer word, ons mis ons gereelde TV programme, kos kan nie voorberei word nie, ens. Daar is egter nou ‘n oplossing: Diegene wat moeg is vir Eskom se onderbrekings, kan nou hulle sonkrag-stelsel huur of ook “Huur-Koop” van Solar Renting, (Pty) Ltd, oor ‘n tydperk van 10 jaar. Dit sluit besighede en plaasboere in, en kom die stelsels in enige grootte om aan die besondere huurder se behoeftes te kan voorsien. Solar Renting het pas genoeg finansiering daar gestel om selfs Nywerhede en ketting winkels van krag te kan voorsien op ‘n huur koop basis, wat oor 10 jaar strek, en daarna word die stelsel die eiendom van die betaler. Hierdie befondsing is ook veral vir boere geskik, soos bv om besproeiing stelsels van krag te voorsien. Een voorwaarde om te kwalifiseer vir ‘n huur-, of dan ‘n huur koop transaksie, is dat die eiendom in die huurder se naam geregistreer moet wees, of dit moet lang termyn huurders wees, soos ketting winkels. Daar kan egter ook stelsels voorsien word, wat net die basiese behoeftes van die besigheid of huis sal dek: In ‘n besigheid kan ons bv. net die ligte & komputers van krag voorsien, of in ‘n huis die TV & ligte, selfoon laaiers, yskas & diepvries asook ‘n mikrogolf, wat dan konstant van krag voorsien word. Hierdie stelsels kom gewoonlik sonder son panele, en kry net batterye en ‘n omsetter, wat dan die batterye gedurig laai vanaf die krag netwerk, en dan dus deurlopend krag voorsien as die netwerk afskakel. (Dieselfde as ‘n UPS-Stelsel.) Hierdie stelsel kan dan maklik later opgradeer word, deur panele by te sit. Om hierdie sonkrag stelsels egter so klein, en dus goedkoop as moontlik te hou, moet huurders bereid wees om hulle warm water stelsels oor te skakel na son water verwarmers, en daar beveel Solar Renting se besturende direkteur, Mnr Robert Duvenage, ‘n spesifieke son water verwarmer aan, nl. die tipe wat met glas buise werk, en nie die tipes wat met panele werk nie. Mnr Duvenage raai ook aan dat elektriese stowe vervang moet word met gas stowe, met gas oonde, wat baie beter werk as ‘n elektriese stoof, omdat die gasvlam se hitte onmiddelik beskikbaar is, en dus geen energie verlore raak om eers ‘n plaat, of spiraal te verwarm nie. Gas werk ook baie goedkoper as elektrisiteit uit. Die hele reeks stelsels kom in 1KW, 2KW, en 4KW of 5KW groottes, waar elke stelsel met meer panele en batterye voorsien kan word, om aan elke behoefte te voorsien. Stelsels kan ook agterna maklik vergroot word as die kliënt se behoeftes verander, deur bv nog ‘n 4KW of 5KW by ‘n bestaande een te koppel, maar die batterye & panele van elke stelsel apart te hou, en net die omsetters aanmekaar te koppel. Drie Fase Krag kan ook gelewer word, deur bv 3 x 4 KW stelsels op te rig. Dit kan dan ook weer versterk word, deur nog 3 x 4 KW stelsels, en selfs meer, saam te koppel. Alle stelsels kan ook krag aan die netwerk lewer, deur dan van ‘n digitale meter gebruik te maak, wat vorentoe & agtertoe kan beweeg. Dit moet egter of deur Eskom, of die Muni-

sipaliteit goedgekeur word. BELEGGERS: Solar Renting (Pty) Ltd kan nou ‘n uitstekende belegging bied aan mense wat ‘n bietjie meer rente wil verdien, as wat die banke tans kan aanbied, selfs al het ons oorgenoeg befondsing! Solar Renting het ‘n baie veilige beleggings geleentheid, waar die geld gebruik word om sonkrag stelsels op ‘n verhuring-basis op te rig, en soos die huurders dan elke maand huur betaal, word dan ‘n uitstekende MAANDELIKSE RENTE aan die beleggers oorbetaal. Hierdie syfers is gebaseer op ‘n jaarlikse inflasie koers van sowat 5% tot 6%. Rente word dan direk in die belegger se bank rekening betaal. Geld is ook enige tyd beskikbaar, in geval van waar ‘n boedel weens dood ontstaan, en die boedel afgehandel moet word. Andersins kan met ‘n 30-dae kennisgewing die beleggingsgeld beskikbaar gemaak word. ELEKTRIESE KONTRAKTEURS GESOEK: Daar is ‘n uitstekende geleentheid vir gekwalifiseerde elektrisiëns om sonkrag stelsels op te sit, en aan die krag te koppel. Solar Renting gee aan hierdie kontrakteurs opleiding om die batterye, omsetter, panele, kontroleerder, ens korrek op te koppel. Die battery wat gebruik word, is soortgelyk aan die nuut ontwerpte batterye van Solar City, van Mnr Elon Musk, wat teen ‘n muur vasgesit word. Hierdie batterye kan tot soveel as 800KG weeg vir die groter stelsels, en om dit maklik te kan hanteer, word van ‘n klein hidrouliese hyskraan met ook ‘n staal katrol gebruik gemaak. Daar is ook baie spesiale krag meters nodig, wat alles saam met die opleiding voorsien word. Die kontrakteur kry dan tot soveel as 10% van die stelsel se koste vir die installering, maar die kontrakteur kan nog heelwat ekstra verdien, deur ook stelsels te bemark. Daar word ‘n kommissie van 2.5% betaal, maar dan ook sowat 5% van die maandelikse huur bedrag, wat dan vermeerder, soos wat meer stelsels verkoop word. BEMARKERS GESOEK: Ons is op soek na mense wat hul eie vervoer het, asook bemarking ondervinding, waar daar met kliënte soos plaasboere & huis eienaars asook sakemanne gedeel is. Bemarkers wat kwalifiseer, word dan opgelei om bg. stelsels te bemark, asook na-verkope opvolg werk te doen.
