‘Stolen’ child rumours false VANDERBIJLPARK. – A man’s inappropriate attempt at a joke with an infant and his parents at the President Hyper (Vaal) has developed into a major embarrassment for the supermarket group and two local clergymen. Thousands of social media users have believed and spread a distorted story of a child who was “abducted at a shopping center” and are now embarrassed by their own gullibility. What actually happened was an infant was walking just ahead of his parents at President Hyper (Vaal) when a man jokingly picked him up from behind. The man’s inappropriate attempt at teasing the child and his parents misfired as the mother reacted with extreme shock even though he immediately gave the child back. By chance the child was the grandson of a Vereeniging clergyman (Ster is withholding his name in order to protect the identity of the child). At a recent preachers gathering the preacher-grandfather discussed the incident with Rev Andre Swanepoel of the Herformde Gemeente Vanderbijlpark-Suid. This year is the Church’s Child Protection Year and so Rev Andre mentioned to his congregation from the pulpit that for children’s safety parents should at all times keep a watchful eye on their children in public places. ”While I was talking about this I remembered my colleague telling me about his grandchild and I told the congregation about the public altercation with the man,” he said. ”I did not intend to indicate that such events

only occurred at shopping centres such but at any public place, even in the street at our church precinct,” he said. Unluckily one of the churchgoers had listened selectively and using her cell phone after the church service sent out a Watsapp warning to all her friends about the “kidnapping at President Hyper”. The story which had reached thousand of persons in South Africa as well as Australia and Europe, had acquired many fanciful addons such as that it had occurred the previous week in Krugersdorp and that the abducter with the child had to be tackled in order for the child to be rescued. Other false information was that the man ran with the child to a waiting vehicle filled with members of a child abduction syndicate. All this is totally untrue. A local industrial psychologist says this is a textbook case of how the public embellishes an unfounded rumour in the social media and causes panic without any foundation in fact. “Humans experience a need for sensation and to express their own fear. They embellish a story until it becomes a credible and frightening story. Additionally the names of two respected clerics were coupled with the story, making it even more credible and driving the anxiety levels even higher. We all need to learn that we should not believe implicitly what is seen on the internet. Be advised to rather read only official publications having a reputation of distinguishing between fact and fiction” he advised.

Mr Basil Synodinos, CEO of President Hyper, says the incident was captured on the shop’s CCTV and it is clear that the male client carried out a playful but irresponsible action in picking up the child in front of his parents. The video clip clearly shows that the child was given back within seconds to the shocked mother. ‘”We fully appreciate the parents’ concern as our children are priceless and no one has the right to touch them without the parent’s concent. The safety, security and welfare of our clients and their children is of the greatest importance. We employ an extraordinary amount of security staff on our premises and have state of the art security equipment in place to ensure the maximum safety of our cliernts.” Mr Synodinos said * Spokespersons of the local Police say they are not aware of any child abduction syndicate in The Vaal Triangle and they know of no attempts to abduct children at local shopping centres. The assertions that are made in false electronic messages that the police have warned the public that such events regularly occur at shopping centres are totally untrue. “Parents must always be attentive to the security of their children but shouldn’t make the children unnecessarily anxious. All our local shopping centres’ security measures make them the safest public places where you can be with your child,” said a SAPD spokesperson.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The growth of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) as a formidable tertiary institution, both in stature and size - drawing students and staff from all over the world - has motivated the need to host, embrace and celebrate all cultures on campus with an Inter Cultural Day on an annual basis. This year the event took place on Saturday March 14. The VUT has 22 000 students of which about 2 000 are international, coming from more than 35 countries. These students come from very diverse cultural backgrounds all over the world. The InterCultural Day is one of the most important annual events on the campus that is used to appreciate these diverse cultural differences. “As the Vaal University of Technology faces its current aspirations, it is important that we remember and celebrate our strengths and our values. Diversity remains one of VUT’s highest priorities, and one of the most important ideals. “VUT hopes that this event will encourage interaction and harmony among staff and students, thus contributing to the social justice and transformation agenda of the university as well as the strategic positioning of the university as far as internationalisation is concerned,” said Ms Kediemetse Mokotsi, Director: Marketing & Public Relations. Emerald’s ‘Party of the Year’ a huge hit VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emerald Resort & Casino’s recent Party of the Year (PotY) hosted at the large E&E Centre once again surpassed everyone’s expectations. `Party of the Year’ is one of Emerald Resort & Casino’s premier events of the year,” says Tanuja Gangabishun, marketing executive at Emerald Resort & Casino. “It is a chance for us to showcase all aspects of the Resort and for us to say ‘thank you’ to many of our business clients.” On arrival guests were treated to a full tour of the Resort. Crime report The Vanderbijlpark SAPS managed to arrest a total of 55 people last weekend for various crimes. Five illegal shebeens were closed and 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence, eight suspects for possession of drugs. Business break-ins are still a problem. Theft of motor vehicles is down compared to last year, but now motorbikes are being stolen, especially scooters. Sergeant Gertrude Makhale, communications officer for the SAPS in Vanderbijlpark, said that house break-ins and thefts have been eased off since the arrest of three suspects, who were linked to 13 cases. A business robbery happened on Saturday March 14 when six men overpowered employees and customers at a jewellery store in the CBD. Jewellery was taken, watches, rings etc. to the total value of R612 000. All arrested suspects appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. “Though we may face many challenges we are utilising maximum resources to address crime effectively in order to bring criminals to justice,” said Gertrude. A well informed community is what the Vanderbijlpark SAPS strive towards, as they keep fighting crime. A well informed community is more alert and deters criminals.

This thief needs to learn from his mistakes VANDERBIJLPARK. - On March 11, ADT Security responded to an alarm activation at premises in Lady Ann-Barnard Street. ADT reaction officer Jacob Motaung was dispatched. On arrival at the scene he confirmed that there had been a break-in and notified the property owner. Fortunately an alert neighbour had seen the suspect climb over the wall and notified the ADT Reaction officer. Officer Motaung headed in the direction the neighbour pointed out, found the suspect and apprehended him. An accident on Dube Road, Bophelong, culminated in the angry community barricading the road with heaps of soil and rocks demanding that ELM install speed humps.

BOPHELONG. - The community could not bear the pain suffered by a physically challenged pedestrian after he was hit by a car on Dube Street. They used wheelbarrows to convey soil and rocks to block the road, forcing road users to slow down when driving on that street on March 15. The road led from the robot intersection of Bophelong and the Golden Highway. The

communities said one losing life is enough. It was bad enough that some motorists coming from nearby taverns at night speed as if they are on the Kyalami Motors show ground. They allege they have long brought the matter to the attention of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to no avail. A community member who did not want to be named said they were told that as long as no case of death was reported, ELM would find it

‘difficult’ to install speed humps. ‘We are giving the municipality a week to install the speed humps. We are not scared to do it our own way,’ they say. Sedibeng Ster heard some bystanders say they wanted to stone speeding cars at night, then disappear. It would not be the first time the community had gone berserk, digging into a road before the municipality had installed a stop sign in Extension 18, Bophelong. The same kind of accident allegedly forced the commu-

nity to say `one life is enough’. The chairperson of the Emfuleni ‘War Room’, Public Safety MMC Velly Mcera said they would place ‘visible’ traffic police around. Speed humps would be installed after a feasibility study. In the meantime, ELM will place pedestrian crossing lines. Speed humps will not be installed everywhere. Mcera appeals to the community to stop stealing the road sign and report any vandalism to the police.

Fire and Rescue late due to burst tyre

THE BARRAGE. - A driver of the Emfuleni Fire and Rescue department lost control of his truck. It swerved off the road fell on its side. The incident happened when the driver was responding to an emergency call. A shack was burning in the Barrage squatter camp on March 15. The truck driver could not reach his destination due to accident. Another truck assigned as a back-up from Vanderbijlpark arrived late at the scene. Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Mkwani, said a fire-deceased Fedrik Mananyankona Shikwambane aged between 40 and 45, was alone in his shack. He

arrived with his friends from Bophelong in the early morning. It is not known how the shack caught fire, say Police: “There’s a high suspicioun that he might have forgotten to exrtinguish a candle.” Some of his friends say they were alerted by a huge flame burning brightly in the direction of his shack. When they rushed to help, they were driven back by the flames. There were no taps nearby to control the fire. The deceased was killed by inhalation of smoke, said Police. By the time Fire and Rescue arrived, the community had already successful controlled the flames.

Launch of Peugeot 308 The 2014 European Car of the Year is finally available in South Africa. Peugeot SA this month launches the all-new 308 hatchback, heralding the advent of the marque’s most advanced hatchback to date. Designed around Peugeot’s new-generation Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), the new 308 combines compact, wieldy dimensions and a substantially reduced kerb mass with an advanced, high-efficiency drivetrain to deliver exceptional dynamics and frugal fuel consumption. The interior execution reflects the advanced nature of the 308, as well as close attention to design detail, high comfort levels and tactile quality. The cockpit design combines deeply recessed, highly visible instrument dials with a large, full-colour touchscreen display, while a multifunction steering wheel further benefits intuitive access to key functions and features. Mirroring a design trend first introduced by the 208 and 2008, the 308’s ergonomic layout combines a small-diameter steering wheel with an elevated instrument binnacle, allowing an unencumbered view of the road and the key instrumentation. Despite the fact that the new 308 is more compact than its predecessor, efficient packaging and intelligent design conspire to create a roomy cabin with spacious accommodation for front and rear occupants. Smart finishes, including textured surfaces, metallic accents and high-gloss inserts, establish an upmarket ambience, adding to the new Peugeot 308’s feel-good character. Practicality remains a further 308 attraction, with a generous luggage compartment, and a 60/40-split rear bench seat that can be partly of completely folded flat to boost cargo space. A five-star Euro-NCAP rating underscores the new Peugeot hatchback’s exceptional safety standards, with a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features. The new Peugeot 308 is initially offered in two variants, both employing Peugeot latest, high-efficiency PureTech engine technology. The cutting-edge, three-cylinder powerplant incorporates high-pressure direct injection,

four valves per cylinder, and high-pressure turbocharging. The result is a small-capacity engine with compact dimensions and low mass that emulates the power and torque of a much larger, more conventional and less efficient power plant, while achieving clear benefits as far as reduced exhaust emissions and lower fuel consumption are concerned. Starting off the range is the Peugeot 308 Active, which is fitted with the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 110 engine. It produces a maximum power output of 81 kW at 5 500 r/min, combined with a generous 205 Nm of torque, available from just 1 500 r/min. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard. By comparison, the 1.2 PureTech e-THP 130 engine fitted to the 308 GT Line elevates those output levels even further. Maximum power increases to an impressive 96 kW at 5 Peugeot 308 500 r/min, while torque now peaks at 240 Nm, already on song from only 1 750 r/min. The GT Line model gets a six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios.The differences between the Active and GT Line models extend to exterior styling details and interior trim and equipment levels. For instance, the GT Line gains full LED headlights, a different grille, and twin, narrowaperture tailpipes, as well as larger alloy wheels and more brightwork. While both models offer a comprehensive array of standard equipment, the GT Line gains an extended features list, together with enhanced trim levels.

Do you suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome? By Donna van der Merwe (Optometrist) Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probably one of the eye conditions I encounter most in my everyday life as an optometrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have been practicing here since 1997 and am always surprised by how few people realise that they have an actual condition that needs to be treated on a daily basis. People generally complain that their eyes just feel sore and tired, especially after a long day in front of the computer, or burn a lot when reading and watching TV. Here are some Dry Eye questions answered: What is a Dry Eye? Basically, it just means that there are not enough tears in the eye. The natural tear film keeps the surface of the eye moist, lubricates the inside of the eyelids (makes blinking comfy), nourishes the eye and cleans and protects the eye by washing away foreign particles. It also keeps the corneal surface stable end even. This all means that when the tears stop working properly, your eyes no longer feel comfortable and your vision becomes unstable. What does a Dry Eye feel like? Typical symptoms include: Burning sensation Blurred vision that comes and goes Red eyes Sandy, gritty feeling in eyes Eyes that tear a lot, especially when concentrating Increased light sensitivity Decreased contact lens tolerance White, stringy discharge What causes Dry Eye? Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear production is inadequate or when tears evaporate excessively. Environmental Factors: fans; air conditioners; heaters; dry and windy climate conditions; working in dry and dusty environments Lifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, decongestants, oral contraceptives and many more; focusing for hours on a tablet, cell phone or computer or TV screen; excessive reading or needlework; driving long distances regularly Physical Factors: aging (causes a natural reduction in tear production); certain medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIV and thyroid problems. What can be done about a Dry Eye? Lubricating eye drops and gels: Just as with any chronic condition you might suffer from, a dry eye needs to be treated daily. A lubricating eye drop should be used. Make sure that it is formulated for a Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infections. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t go away when you use the occasional drop, or when your eyes feel better. Drops should be used daily for as long as the environmental, lifestyle and physical factors listed above are present in your life. Supplements: Fish oils like Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are often recommended.Proper sunglasses: Using a quality pair of sunglasses helps reduce the light sensitivity symptoms and keeps the wind away from your eyes. Make sure the lenses have sufficient UV protection. Polarized lenses are highly recommended.Humidifier: Use a humidifier in winter near burning heaters and fires and in summer when the aircon or fan is on. Not sure if you have a Dry Eye?
