High five for Paws on the Pavement

MEYERTON. - The Paws on the Pavement Dog Walk, presented by the SPCA Vereeniging/Meyerton was held on May 1 at the Midvaal Sport & Conference Centre. “The funds raised from this fundraising initiative will be put into good use this month, providing care and assistance to many needy animals in our district,” says SPCA manager Marlien Pieterse. “As you know we get no funding from the government and in order to keep our doors open and our wheels turning we fundraise through events like these to make ends meet.” As a non-profit organisation they totally rely upon the goodwill of the community, businesses, suppliers, supporters and volunteers to make these fundraisers a success. “We would like to give a ‘paw felt’ thanks to our community, businesses, suppliers, supporters and volunteers for their kindness and assistance with this fundraising initiative which certainly helped make the day a success. “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your participation,” says Marlien. For the SPCA staff it was fabulous to see so many happy, healthy animals in one place whilst their owners were walking around proudly, presenting them to the public. This sort of loving kindness to animals give the SPCA staff motivation to face their daily tasks. “This highlights the fact that the communi-

ty supports and recognises our daily efforts, even though it sometimes feels like a thankless task,” concludes Marlien. * The SPCA will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves with the support of the community, and together we can make a difference in all animal welfare.

VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Police have opened a case after a man (48) and a woman (44) drowned in the Vaal River. Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says, “On arrival at the scene we were told by an eye witness that a BMW with two occupants was driving on the R 716 in a northern direction, on the wrong side of the road and flashing its headlights. Then the driver drove straight into the river. We are investigating the case.” In another case, a total of 31 people were arrested over the weekend. According to Funda, three people were

Riverside raises R10 000 for the needy Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - Riverside High School Learners have in the past few months been working together in a bid to raise R10 000 to buy school shoes for needy children in primary schools, especially those in rural areas. This project is the brainchild of Grade 12 learner Malefatsane Masitha in conjunction with NGO ‘Youth Development through Investigation and Dissemination of Information’ (YDIDI). Riverside Principal Evald Makgwatha says “We are very fortunate to have had the most popular Youth Radio Station broadcast from our school for three hours. Y-FM is mostly listened to by the youth and this is how we were able to send our message across.” Makgwatha states that he thought the idea was good as it instilled a sense of giving and appreciation in all the students. “Another important thing is that learners need to be valued. Many of the youth have big dreams and aspirations, and by seeing all the radio personalities here, they will realise that they too can achieve their dreams,” Makgwatha concludes. The event ended with a career session where different institutions discussed subject choices, careers and funding with the students.

A new generation of drug and alcohol abuse fighters has risen in the Vaal. Unemployed township youths are using drama and peer education to appeal directly at grass-roots level to tackle the region’s out-of-control drug and alcohol epidemic. Vukuzakhe! – Let the youth empower others – is the call to action of this National Lottery Trust-funded project by SANCA VAAL launched last week in Vanderbijlpark. Vukuzakhe members were professionally trained in drama for three months by Bloemfontein playwright Gertjan Holtzhausen of Lion Hearts Productions. No-one is more passionate about the persuasion power of drama than Vukuzakhe co-ordinator Mthunzi Mthimkulu (33), who completed an intensive 3-month course with Holtzhausen in Sebokeng starting in De-

cember 2014. “We want to give back to our communities through Vukuzakhe,” he said. About 70% of patients treated by SANCA VAAL are ‘nyaope’ (dagga and heroin) addicts, and of these, 70 % are children and youth, according to Magriet Botha, SANCA VAAL director. “Live performance has a unique capacity to stimulate and engage the mind, feelings and imaginations as well as to confront in a non-judgmental way,” Botha added. This is echoed by project leader Mthunzi, bringing a message of love and hope to the community. “The training programme was very challenging but brought a massive change to all of us. Those who wander (use alcohol and drugs) are not necessarily lost,” said Mthimkulu. Vukuzakhe can be booked for performances, which are about 10-30 minutes long. Omdat die kerk se lidmate meestal bejaardes is, kry die gemeente finansieel baie swaar en moet hulle voortdurend na maniere soek om fondse in te samel om die gebou te onderhou. Om hierdie pragtige kerkgebou en orrel tot sy reg te laat kom, word daar ‘n orrelkonsert met die befaamde orrelis Eddie Davey, Braam van Tonder (trompet) en Pierre van der Westhuizen (tenoor) beplan op Sonadg 24 Mei om 15:00. Die koor van Hoërskool Driehoek sal ook by die geleentheid optree. Prag kunswerke van plaaslike kunstenaars is onlangs gesien met 'n kunsuitstalling by die ou stasiegebou in Parys wat deur sowat 500 mense oor die naweek bygewoon is. Naas die werke van plaaslike kunstenaars het gaskunstenaar, Wim Rautenbach, ook aan die uitstalling deelgeneem. Sowat R40 000 se skilderye is verkoop met die duurste werk, di van plaaslike skilder Hennie Kruger, wat vir R17 500 verkoop is. Die jaarlikse kunsuitstalling is 'n projek van die Parys Ontwikkelingsforum en is georganiseer deur Cornea Viljoen en Karin TerBlanche. Vir eregaste wat die openingsaand bygewoon het, was dit 'n besondere belewenis om hierdie prag gebou di keer in 'n ander baadjie te kon aanskou met skilderwerke van stasietonele teen die mure wat spesiaal vir die geleentheid deur Karin TerBlanche en Wim Rautenbach (foto) gedoen is. Die gebruik van die stasiegebou is danksy Etienne Beukes vir die duur van die uitstalling beskikbaar gestel. Voor die Anglo Boereoorlog was handel betreklik stadig weens die gebruik van ossewaens tussen die Greenlands-stasie en Parys. Mnr. J.K. Derry, voorsitter van die destydse stadsraad het dit egter sy werk gemaak om te pleit vir 'n treinstasie vir Parys wat toe wel in 1905 toegestaan is. Op 23 Desember 1905 is die spoorlyn geopen. Die stasiegebou soos dit vandag is, is geopen in 1930.

Gewysigde regulasies ingevolge die Nasionale Padverkeerswet is verlede jaar op 31 Oktober in die Staatskoerant afgekondig. Tiyani Rikhotso, woordvoerder van die departement van vervoer, het toe gesê die nuwe regulasies sal eers op 30 April vanjaar in werking tree om motoriste genoeg tyd te gee om die nodige veiligheidstoerusting aan te koop. Die wysiging behels dat ouers wat met hul babas en kleuters reis, wetlik verplig word om hulle in ‘n motorstoeltjie vas te gespe. Spieltjie, spieltjie aan die wand.... Ingevolge die nuwe wet, waarvan die voorneme op 31 Oktober 2014 bekendgemaak is, sal alle kinders onder die ouderdom van drie jaar in ’n motorstoeltjie vasgegespe moet wees. Arrive Alive se navorsingsdata en statistiek oor die belangrikheid van sitplekgordels en motorstoeltjies toon sitplekgordels verminder die waarskynlikheid van sterfte met 40 tot 50 persent vir bestuurders en passasiers op die voorsitplek en sowat 25 persent vir passasiers op die agtersitplek. Om uit die motor te val is een van die ernstigste goed wat in ’n ongeluk met ’n mens kan gebeur. Driekwart van alle insittendes wat in ’n ongeluk uit ’n voertuig val, sterf. Die navorsing toon verder sitplekgordels keer dat iemand uit ’n motor val, want altesaam 44 persent van nie-vasgemaakte passasiers in voertuie sterf wanneer hulle gedeeltelik of heeltemal uit die motor val vergeleke met net 5 persent van vasgemaakte insittendes.

Belangriker nog, die ondersoek toon kinderveilige motorstoeltjies wat reg ingesit en gebruik word vir kinders tot vier jaar, kan die risiko van sterftes van babas met 70 persent verminder en dié van kinders van een tot vier jaar met 54 persent. Gewysigde regulasies ingevolge die Nasionale Padverkeerswet is verlede jaar op 31 Oktober in die Staatskoerant afgekondig. Hoewel volwassenes en ouer kinders reeds voor die nuwe regulasies verplig was om sitplekgordels te dra, was dit nie vir kinders van jonger as drie jaar verpligtend nie. Geskikte veiligheidsitplekke en motorstoeltjies vir babas was ook nie nodig nie en daar was geen reëls vir kinders van ouer as drie wat op die voorste sitplek sit nie. Luidens die Mediese Navorsingsraad (MNR) is padongelukke die grootste oorsaak van sterftes vir kinders jonger as vyf in SuidAfrika. Die meeste van dié kinders was nie vasgemaak nie. Meer as 17 000 mense sterf jaarliks op

Suid-Afrikaanse paaie. Vir elke padsterfte word vier mense ernstig beseer. Die MNR het bevind dat 23% van alle sterftes in kinders tussen vyf en 14 die gevolg van beserings is – veral voetganger- en passasiersbeserings, sowel as verdrinking, brandwonde en vuurwapenverwante beserings. Padongeluk-verwante beserings is die algemeenste soort beserings onder skoolgaande kinders in Gauteng. 1 513 kinders is tussen 2008 en 2011 in padongelukke in Gauteng dood. Padsterftes maak 50,9% van alle sterftes onder skoolgaande kinders in die provinsie uit. Navorsing deur die Amerikaanse sentrum vir siektebeheer (CDC) het bevind dat die risiko van sterfte in ’n botsings met 71% daal as babas behoorlik in motorstoeltjies vasgemaak is. Motorstoeltjies verminder ook die risiko van ernstige beserings vir kinders tussen vier en agt jaar met 45%. Bron: Netwerk24

Slaggat op slaggat VEREENIGING. - Inwoners van Duncanville sit met hul hande in hul hare oor die slaggate wat by die dag meer word. Verskeie klagtes oor die slaggate is al aan die Emfuleni Plaaslike Munisipaliteit gerapporteer, maar klagtes val net op dowe ore. Die strate wat die ergste deur die slaggate geraak word, is Piet Retieflaan, Louis Trichardstraat, Pieter Uyslaan, Charl Cilliersstraat en Hendrik Potgieterstraat. By sommige plekke moet motoriste stop en wag dat aankomende verkeer eers verbygaan, omdat die slaggate te groot is om verby dit te ry, sonder om ‘n ongeluk te veroorsaak.

Nuwe tuiste vir Wheels at the Vaal VANDERBIJLPARK. - Wheels at the Vaal, die gewilde jaarlikse massa-uitstalling van klassieke en veteraanmotors, stoomenjins en ander interessante toebehore, wat die afgelope jare by die NWU (Vaal) aangebied is, trek vanjaar ‘n splinternuwe baadjie aan. Die uitstalling word vanjaar vir die eerste keer by die Sylviavale Heritage Museum in Vanderbijlpark aangebied.

Die geleentheid sal oor drie dae (van 4 tot 6 September) aangebied word en gaan ‘n vol program met kunstenaars insluit. Soos gewoonlik sal gemeenskapsorganisasies, stalletjiehouers en Rotariërs ‘n verskeidenheid van hoëgehalte kos, verversings en drank beskikbaar stel, terwyl ander stalletjies handelsgoedere, tuisgemaakte artikels, oudhede, versamelaarsitems en skaars motoron-

derdele en –toebehore gaan bemark. Vanjaar word ‘n goed versorgde 1976 Chev Nomad uitgeloot met ‘n trekking by die fees op Sondag September 6.

OFM investing in the future In a bid to continually serve its audience better, OFM - the sound of central South Africa - will soon be moving its studio from the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark. Nick Efstathiou, OFM general manager says, “Emerald Resort and Casino has graciously hosted us for three years. We are now extremely excited to move our studio to new premises within the next few months. Isabel Potgieter will be giving birth to her first in July this year and during her maternity leave we will move our operation in Vanderbijlpark to a property that feeds into our overall strategy to grow the brand in the Vaal area.”

Over the past few years, Isabel Potgieter and Samantha Wrightson have broadcast the show, Mid-Morning Magic, from 09:00 to 12:00 from the Emerald Resort studio. Tony Blewitt also broadcast his Sunday morning show, Gold Retold, from 09:00 to 13:00. Setting up the new studio will be an intricate process that will take place over the next few months. In the meantime, on her return Isabel Potgieter will make use of the all new OFM studios at the Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp. The new Klerksdorp studio will be fully operational by August 2015. “With our new network of studios in Bloemfontein, Klerksdorp and Vanderbijlpark, we aim to create radio shows that are more local in flavour. We are investing in our future to better deliver our product to all of central South Africa. OFM has a massive footprint in central South Africa and we really don’t want to follow a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It is important to us to make our audience and all our stakeholders, from the Northern Cape, through the Free State and North West, right up to the Vaal Triangle feel like they benefit from what we broadcast every day,” says Efstathiou.
