Rotary goes down memory lane VEREENIGING. - The Rotary Club of Three Rivers recently had its Installation and Awards celebration under the theme ‘Down Memory Lane.’ The event was held at Bordeaux Haven in Three Rivers. Important role-players and network partners were acknowledged for excellent work over the past year and the club was recognised by Rotary District 9400. Former President Dave Haselau amazed attendees with tales and stories of

the good old days in the 60s. This was accompanied by a 60s dress code and music. District Governor Annie Steijn attended and handed over certificates. A community service award was given to Thato Phake for his volunteer work in providing dancing classes for street children and schools in the townships. Edith Letsie received a vocational service award for her voluntary health services to members of the community who attended the feeding scheme at Victoria Street Methodist

Church. Mgezi Mazibuko received recognition for having completed the full diploma course by the Rotary Leadership Institute. The Beverley Hills Secondary School received a full soccer kit and netball kit whilst the Vereeniging Central Methodist Church received 20 blankets for the needy who attend the weekly feeding scheme. First female director of Nissan SA at Leadership Summit VANDERBIJLPARK. - One of the most pertinent challenges South Africa currently faces is the critical shortage of professional and managerial skills. Ms Charmaine Lemao, Human Resources Director at Nissan SA, will take to the stage during the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University’s (NWU Vaal) Leadership Summit on August 12 to talk about skills management and talent retention in the light of current skills shortages and the impact it has on competitiveness. It is this challenge that keeps Ms Lemao, the first-ever female director at Nissan South Africa - driven and focused. As the auto giant, Nissan SA’s HR Director, Charmaine is not only making her mark in a male-dominated and highly unionized industry, she is also playing a critical role in helping the organisation drive up profitability and market share.

Charmaine, whose career started at Iscor (now ArcelorMittal South Africa), joined Nissan’s board in 2013, from Nampak Tissue where she was also HR Director. Originally from Atteridgeville, North West of Pretoria, Charmaine was schooled in the Northern Province and Pretoria. She studied at the University of Westville in KwaZulu-Natal and at the University of Johannesburg. She also completed an executive training programme through UNISA. She started her career at Iscor (Kumba Resources) fulfilling various roles in HR, before moving to Nampak Tissue, previously a division of the Nampak Group, where she worked her way up from HR Manager to HR director. The NWU Vaal Leadership Summit 2015 represents a dynamic collaboration with the Ukuvula Foundation and Studio 55 Events and Production. By providing this platform – from which

Choose your subjects wisely, warns expert VANDERBIJLPARK. - The world of work and further study is very competitive and we live in a fast-changing labour market, which has serious implications for someone whose subject choices were careless. School kids and their parents have to start planning from an early age - actually even from pre-school age, says well-known Vanderbijlpark psychologist CP de Jager. During a learner’s school career a number of choices have to be made. From pre-school age parents have to decide on a primary school. In Grade 7 it has to be decided which high school is available for the high school experience; in other words, are we looking at the usual academic high school or at a technical high school? In Grade 9, learners have to make the necessary subject choices that apply to the last phases of high school – Grades 10, 11 and 12. Then in Grade 12, learners must decide in which direction they want to study further, or in which direction they wish to pursue a career. “When subject choices are made in Grade 9, one should be choosing the subject one will stick with to the end of matric. Although these choices are specifically aimed at further career choices, most 15-year-olds have no idea what they want to study in terms of what subjects they choose earlier,” says De Jager. “However, my position is that in Grade 9,

a subject choice is made - but is not yet focused on further studies or on careers. It is really important to structure subject choices properly so that learners who opt to study further have a solid basis from which to make sensible choices toward higher education and/or training. “It is also not unusual for learners who aren’t yet sure of a career choice to choose subjects favoured by parents or friends at school. However, choosing subjects should be done with careful consideration,” he says. Choosing the wrong subjects can later result in great disappointment when they turn

“When choosing subjects to pursue a specific career it is important to look at a child’s interests, aptitude as well as at behavioural indicators. SEBOKENG. - A start-up for young entrepreneurs came from Innovation Hub and VUT Science and Technology Park. Sebokeng Campus came to a standstill on Sunday after three days of intensive business incubation-advice culminated in the announcement of the winner of R250 000. Innovation Hub, the Vaal University of Technology and Southern Gauteng Science & Technology Park (SGSTP) partnered in an exciting initiative aimed at equipping young entrepreneurs with opportunities and skills that will help start up their businesses. Doctor Tshabalala and Bongiwe Myali from Zonke Energy Solutions outshone their peers and competitors. This duo was the best among those who attended the start-up weekend followed by Bright Phahle from Phahle Development Projects. Third place was clinched by Pertunia Nkhasi from PN Innovates. StartUp Weekend is one of the vehicles used by StartUp Nations RSA to establish local entrepreneurs. It is a global movement that

brings together invited entrepreneurs over a weekend-long experiential workshop, so as to empower them through learning the basics of establishing their own start-ups and launching successful ventures and potential partnerships. It involves pitching ideas and forming teams, who then work on the Business Model Canvas so as to clearly define their MVP as well as a concrete business plan. ‘Azande Ralephenya’, public relations officer, says that, from Friday to Sunday, the participants took part in various activities such as working on a Business Model Canvas supplied by Innovation Hub to equip them with the necessary knowledge for establishing and maintaining a successful business, with assistance from mentors at hand. VANDERBIJLPARK. - On Saturday, July12, 2015, many a brave paddler faced the racing cold water of the Klip River. FLCC hosted their second race in the four Spar-Race series, and what a great turn out there was! For the first time this year, 5 K3’s set out to paddle the 27,5 kilometres, including the Vaal’s very own Watuni Canoe Club K3. Experienced paddlers André Zandbergh and Jan Leonard took with them newer paddler Courtney Jee. Courtney, or Oubaas, as he is known by his club members, is trai-

ning for the Fish River Race. He will be competing in the race for the first time, and is very excited to tick the race off on his bucket list. Saturday saw him and his co-paddlers having it out on the Klip. They completed the race in a time of two hours and 18 minutes, placing them as the third K3 to finish. VEREENIGING. - Hindus urge South Africa to include Diwali, the most popular Hindu holy day, as a public holiday. Currently South Africa has 12 public holidays (New Year’s Day, Human Rights Day, Good Friday, Family Day, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day, Youth Day, National Women’s Day, Heritage Day, Day of Reconciliation, Christmas Day, Day of Goodwill). Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA), recently said that this is not fair towards the South African Hindu community as they have to be at work/school on their most popular festival while there are public holidays on other religious days. Zed, who is President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that the South African Government needed to revisit its public holiday policies as a sizeable number of its citizens were Hindus, who have made many contributions to the country. It is important to meet the religious and spiritual needs of South African Hindu families, Zed added. Zed stated that it was paramount for Hindu families to celebrate Diwali Day together, at home or at the temple. “A public holiday on Diwali would ensure that and it would be a step in a positive direction,” he said. He also noted that awareness about other religions, created by such holidays like Diwali, would bring more cohesion and unity in the overall South African citizenry and make them well-nurtured and enlightened citizens. Zed further said that Hinduism is rich in festivals and religious festivals are very dear and sacred to Hindus. Diwali, the festival of lights, aims to dispell the darkness and light up lives and it symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Besides Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and some Buddhists also celebrate Diwali, which falls on November 11 in 2015. They need volunteers to go to the school to hand out some balls, bats, skipping ropes and play with and entertain them. There are no hand basins on the premises for children to wash their hands - which is a big concern. Hope Ministry and Geloof Hoop En Liefde Ministry joined hands by helping out with bread and fresh veggies, once every two weeks. It will be greatly appreciated if someone comes forward and helps make nameplates for the office, hall, kitchen, pantry, toilets, etc. The children are also in dire need of colouring pencils, suitcases, rulers, clay, school shoes, socks in all sizes, games, educational toys and blankets. There is also a great need for coal and firewood for the stoves that are used as heaters in the classrooms. VANDERBIJLPARK. - A small school, 19km outside Sasolburg is in desperate need of help. On July 18 and 24 a group of volunteers are going to upgrade the school as it is in dire condition. In total the school staff consists of the schoolmaster and three teachers with 15 children in the crèche. They also teach children from grade 1 to grade 6 with a total of 32 pupils. Some of the problems that were identified in a recent SMC Benevolence outreach is that there is only one toilet on the premises that is in working condition. The doors of the class rooms are broken. There are no toys for the small ones in the crèche. There is no educational equipment such as balls, skipping ropes, cricket bats, balls or netballs for the kids play with. There are also no blankets in the crèche for the little ones to take a nap. The children are also in need of school clothes such as windbreakers, scarfs, hats, grey pants and white shirts. There are two cooks that prepare “pap” in the morning for the crèche, and pap or stamp at “break” for the children. The organisers of the outreach suggested a Winter Warmer Project to get sponsors for paint to paint the old shabby cupboards with nice bright colours, like red, blue and yellow. This will help to make a difference in the lives of these children. They are also in need of a sponsor for wood to repair the One of the classrooms at the primary school.

Retirement challenges of increased life expectancy Buyile Ndaba

Changes in social security and medical care, with frequent changes in the stock market, makes retirement an exciting time but it can also be a scary part of one’s life. This has left many people uncertain about the future. Many financial retirement counsellors explain that the cause of some challenges of retirement are mainly due to failing to develop a workable financial plan and lifestyle plan before retirement. Jason Bernic, financial planning coach at Old Mutual Wealth, says clients are increasingly concerned that their money may run out during retirement, and that they will become financially vulnerable in the years when they can least afford it. “Age management has become a major factor in retirement planning, and the introduction of a ‘buffer’ is a crucial requirement,” says Bernic. Bernic says that financial modelling systems allow planners to adjust a client’s retirement age, which will change the parameters of the planning leading up to retirement. The idea that there is a phase of accumulation, building, consolidating then defending no longer works. “It is also no longer advisable to start aggressively and then taper the risk as you near retirement, while managing a very conservative portfolio into retirement whi-

le the bull market leaves you in its dust. “The fact is that money makes money over time, and clients should plan to achieve their goals, which include the lifestyle that they want to lead. If success means remaining in equities over time, then that is the approach that should be followed, albeit with the appropriate understanding that markets will fluctuate.” It should also be kept in mind that with advances in medicine, retirees can expect better health – albeit with significant additional medical cost - and therefore the demand for a lifestyle that could become very expensive in ensuing decades surfaces, says Bernic. When planning for retirement, keep the following in mind: Do expect to need more money for longer. Bank on expenses going up initially, and then tapering off as you get older. SHARPEVILLE. - The Sharpeville community, NGOs and NPOs including governmental structures, recently embarked on a march against drugs, particularly against those who are selling them and also against corrupt police officials who do nothing about the criminals sell the drugs. The march comes after the burial of 9 youths from Sharpeville who were all buried in the same week and who died as a result of drug abuse. The community also handed in a memorandum that was received by the MMC for Safety, Veli Mcera on behalf of the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi

Young Bokang Tsekedi, who formed part of the march along with her peers, told the community and officials how her family suffered after her brother started smoking the popular ‘nyaope drug’. “My brother started smoking nyaope at school. After becoming an addict, he left school and even left home. My brother died of severe burns after he attempted to steal cables in order to get money for nyaope. “My mother had to quit her job to take care of my brother. I sometimes wonder whether he would have stopped taking drugs had he not died.” Donald Tontsi from Philisa Anti Substance Abuse said that it is time the commu-

nity speak up as they know who the culprits are that are getting rich at the expense of the future of the country. “The community has got the power to end this. It is time we handed over the names of the people selling drugs to the relevant officials, including those corrupt police officials who form part of this criminal act.” Tontsi stated that it is time something is done about the escalating situation, saying that if the police cannot do anything they must make space for those willing to work. “There is a need for a new drug unit in Sharpeville as the current drug unit has become inefficient. These are the things we would like the MEC to come back to us about.”

Car drives into shacks Moleboheng Chaha

BOPHELONG. – Residents could not believe their eyes when they saw a car drive through five homes along the street, crashing straight into the two shacks of the Yawa family. According to bystanders, it is pure luck that nobody was injured during the incident. The incident took place when 40-year-old

mechanic Simon Labas was fixing an old Honda Ballade. “I stood outside the car and started it to see if it was working, not realising that the car was in gear.” Labas says there was nothing he could do to stop the car from suddenly speeding off: “I had the scare of my life when I saw the car drive into two shacks. It is very fortunate

that nobody got hurt.” Labas said his worry now is how he is going to repair the shacks so that the two people staying in them have a place to sleep when they knock off from work. Home-owner Nomode Yawa says, “It is just fortunate that the tenants living in the shacks both went to work today, because if they had been home, sleeping in like they

normally do, we would be talking about something totally different.” Yawa adds that it was a pity that the tenants will come home to find that all their possessions have been destroyed by a car that crashed into the shacks. “We will have to explain what happened and tell them that the mechanic is willing to take responsibility for this incident.”

Steve nou staatshoof vir Koepel Republiek Die gedagte rondom die skep van die Republiek van die Koepel, het op KSFM, die plaaslike gemeenskap radiostasie sy ontstaan gehad meer as drie jaar gelede en groet luisteraars mekaar graag as “burgers van die republiek”. Die afgelope naweek is die Republiek gestig ten aanskoue van gaste, en is die bekende, hoewel soms omstrede kunstenaar, Steve Hofmeyr as eerste “Staatshoof” van die Republiek van die Koepel ingelyf. In die konteks van soorgelyke inisiatiewe soos die Republiek van Veldrift, die Republiek van Tarentaal, Republiek van Zoid Afrika, en andere word die Republiek van Koepel gesien as ’n toerisme kinkel om meer bewusmaking van die Vredefort Koepel as toerismebestemming

te verseker, en tot voordeel van die gemeenskap die gebied en omgewing te bemark. Daar word beplan dat die Republiek van Koepel se “kabinet” behoort te bestaan uit mense in die gemeenskap wie by toerisme, gasvryheid, vermaak, avontuur of enige soortgelyke aktiwiteit betrokke is. Dr. Pieter Groenewald, voorsitter van die VF Plus, het die resolusie oor plaasmoorde voorgehou en het die kongres toegespreek oor gewelddadige aanvalle en moorde wat die landbougemeenskap as strategiese minderheid teiken. Ingevolge die aanvaarde resolusie, gaan UNPO nou ŉ beroep doen op die Suid-Afrikaanse Menseregtekommissie (MRK) om sy ondersoekverslag oor plaasaanvalle uit te

reik. Die Verenigde Nasies (VN) se Menseregte kommissaris gaan gevra word om die aangeleentheid te ondersoek. UNPO het ook onderneem om Suid-Afrika se regering te versoek om plaasaanvalle tot prioriteitsmisdaad te verklaar. Die VF Plus se nasionale jeugleier, mnr. Wouter Wessels, het die resolusie oor moedertaalonderrig aan die kongres voorgehou. In hierdie geval het UNPO onderneem om ŉ beroep op die Suid-Afrikaanse regering te

doen om gelyke onderwys-geleenthede aan almal in hul moedertaal te gee, en om die stelselmatige diskriminasie teen Afrikaans stop te sit. ŉ Groot eer het die VF Plus tydens die kongres te beurt geval, deurdat dr. Groenewald as voorsitter van UNPO se verkiesingskommissie aangewys is met die verkiesing van die organisasie se president, visepresident en dagbestuur. Filling: Combine 200g large prawns (deveined and halved), 6 chopped spring onions, 1 beaten egg and seasoning. Sauce: Place 50g macadamia nuts, 1 onion, 5ml ground chilli, 2 cloves garlic, 3ml anchovy paste, 1 ml turmeric and 2 slices green ginger in a blender; blend to a smooth paste. Add to 500 ml coconut milk and season to taste. Stir constantly and bring to the boil. Add stuffed squids and return to the boil. Cover and simmer for about an hour until squids are tender. For this month’s international recipes, we are travelling all the way to the romantic islands of Indonesia. Indonesian cookery is influenced by the Dutch, Chinese and Indian communities we observed when we visited the East a few years back. Coconut milk (santen) and spices feature very prominently. Rijsttafel is the Dutch name - literally meaning Rice Table - given to an Indonesian banquet in which dozens of different dishes and sometimes hundreds of spicy condiments and relishes are served with a huge bowl of rice. This is an easy and unusual way of entertaining because much of the preparation can be done in advance. These spices can be purchased at delicatessens throughout the country. Stuffed squid Buy 6 medium-sized frozen squids, about 80 mm long. Thaw and stuff three-quarters

ve garlic, 50g finely chopped macadamia nuts, 5 ml brown sugar and 1 red chilli, finely chopped, in 50g butter. Add 500g cubed beef topside or rump and brown evenly. Add 5 ml lemon juice and allow to simmer slowly until meat is tender. Stir in 25 – 50 ml coconut milk and serve hot. The dish should be quite dry, but a little water may be added during the cooking process if necessary. Skewered pork Marinade: Mix together: salt and freshly ground black pepper, chilli sauce to taste, 25 ml brown sugar, 25 ml soy sauce and juice of one lemon. Marinade 500g cubed pork fillet for 1 – 2 hours. Arrange meat on the bottom third of skewers. Fry in 50g margarine until well cooked.

Stir-fry prawns Sauté 1 chopped onion and 2 crushed cloves garlic in some butter. Add 1kg prawns, shelled and deveined, stir constantly. Delicious! Stuffed date fritters Batter: Place 65g flour and some salt in a bowl and make a well in the centre. Add 125ml lukewarm water, a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. Beat into a smooth batter. Fold in a stiffly-beaten eggwhite. Stuff 250g loose, stoned dates with 60g blanched almonds. Dip into batter and deepfry in hot oil until brown. Drain on an absorbent paper towel. Serve with coffee.

SEBOKENG.- “Being a parent is hard work, but raising a child is the most wonderful thing God has entrusted us with.” These are the words of the angry group of parents who allegedly found out that their children had to go without basic needs at the Lebohang Centre (Home for the Disabled) in Zone 10, Sebokeng over the weekend. The saga started on Sunday when a group of parents found that their children were not wearing any diapers and had not had proper meals for some time when they were visiting them. “As I was going home to eat a ‘full colours’ dish, I could not bear the fact that my child was left without nappies and proper food,” says one of the parents. It is alleged that the management is misusing funds and that is why the children don’t have food and basic toiletries. The parents made means to meet with the management of the centre but they were apparently sent from pillar to post as no one was willing to take the blame.These angry parents decided that something drastic had to be done, and this was when they contacted Sedibeng Ster. Speking to Sedibeng Ster Molo Makhola says, “I need answers as to why our children have to go through such humiliation just because they are disabled. They are human beings too. They are not animals,” says the furious father who could not hold back his tears. Sonti Maeyane, also a parent, says: “My child’s grant card is here and I don’t even take a cent from the money. “Why on earth would you think that a sanitary pad is able to serve as a diaper?” The office of Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC of Health Sello Pitso was alerted about the situation and investigations are taking place. It is said that a full report will be available soon. James Makhubo, the centre’s manager says that the problem has been solved.
