VEREENIGING. - The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) once again brought awareness to the community through a successful blood drive that was run at the River Square Shopping Centre. According to SANBS personnel at the drive, it is very important for donors to first check their blood pressure, pulse and iron level. This confirms whether donors are fit to donate. This is additional to other important factors that are con-

sidered to ensure a donor is suitable to donate blood, for his or her own safety as well as that of the receiver. James Mofokeng of Sasolburg says, “With the high rate of accidents, it is very important for people to keep on donating blood in order save the lives of others.” Mofokeng was donating blood alongside his wife Matshidiso Mofokeng (27) who also believes that blood donation saves lives. Donor Heidi van der Merwe says, “ I always make time to donate blood on a regular basis. This

is just my bit to ensure that I can one day save someone’s life.” According to SANBS, it issues over onemillion blood components annually. Blood donor recruitment in South Africa is based on a programme endored by the World Health Organisation, which specifies the selection of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors. Low-risk blood donors are identified as volunteer blood donors who donate blood solely to help those in dire need of blood.

Golf day in aid of Cornelius VEREENIGING. - Big Time Events will launch a golf day in aid of Cornelius Jacobs who suffers from arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC) on March 27. This will make for a fun-filled day for a good cause. Children who suffer from AMC are born with one or more joint contractures and have abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissue causing muscle shortening, and are therefore unable to do passive extension and flexion in the affected joints. The golf day will take place at the Riviera Golf Club. The format is American Scramble Betterball Stableford and will cost R1 600 for four players. Those who want to sponsor a hole can do so for R2 500 and if you want to play and sponsor a hole it will cost R4 000. This is for a very good cause as this boy needs 24- hour care. MEYERTON. - A public participation meeting will be held by the Demarcation Board on March 11 at 09:00 at the Meyerton Town Hall. There were problems to confirm the venue and, according to Midvaal Councillor Freddie Peters, chairperson of PAM (People Against the Metro), the reason for the venue being withheld at such a late stage is possibly political. Initially the meeting would have been held at the Vereeniging Town Hall. PAM has lodged legal action against the Demarcation Board and the case is pending in the Gauteng High Court. “Meanwhile the Demarcation Board is going ahead with public participation meetings even though the case brought against them has not been ruled on. “The only conclusion we can draw from this is that the Demarcation Board is hoping to press on with the process so that they can turn round and say it has gone so far that a court case can be disregarded,” said Peters. He further says it is imperative for as many members of the community and people who are against the Metro to attend the public participation meeting. “This will be D-Day for us,” Peters said. “We have to make our voices heard and take a stand.”

First round of Nationals at Ultimate Raceway Jannie du Plessis

VEREENIGING. - The Ultimate Raceway is hosting the first round of the MSA/ TORC Nationals Championships on March 28 at the Vaal Show Grounds. Several SA records are definitely at stake and competitors can’t wait for the National Championship to start. For the first year every class will have to qualify for their grid positions.

The classes attending the Nationals will be Stockrods, 1660cc, Pinto’s, 2.1 litres, Hotrods, Super Saloons and the V8 Sprint class. The Ninja Midgets and Super Midgets will also be there to take part in the regional championships. It will be a day full of racing and starts at 17:00. Competitors from all over the country are entering and the organisers hope to see every oval spectator at this event.

If you want to be astonished by giant pumpkins that weigh more than 300kg then you should be at the R59 Shed on March 14 for the Giant Pumpkin Competition. This year there are a number of new entries and people coming from as far as KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. This is the largest pumpkin competition in the country and with the prize money it is also the one with the richest in terms of winnings. A number of fun categories can be entered, too, such as The Ugliest Giant Pumpkin, The Most Beautiful Giant Pumpkin, The Most Unusual Giant Pumkin as well as the Smallest Mature Giant Pumpkin. To add more fun and excitement there will be a Junior Pumpkin Art competition where those who are interested in being creative get to present artistic pumpkin displays. VANDERBIJLPARK. - MooiVaal Media en verskeie borge vat weer hande om die 2015 Vaalweekblad Talentkompetisie te loods wat unieke plaaslike talent ten toon stel. Luister gerus na die wenners van verlede jaar se kompetisie op VCR 90.6 op Woensdag, 4 Maart om 18:00. Vanjaar se kompetisie begin op 1 Maart en eindig op 31 Mei en word in vier kategorieë ingedeel. Graad 1 - 3, graad 4 tot 7, graad 8 tot 12 en studente aan enige inrigting in die Vaaldriehoek. Leerlinge en studente wat oor ‘n buitengewone talent beskik, kan inskryf. Hoe om in te skryf: Neem ‘n video van maksimum drie minute van jouself terwyl jy jou besondere talent uitvoer. Op die inleiding van die video noem jy jou naam en van, ouderdom, kontaknommer, skool of studie-inrigting. Videogrepe kan in die volgende formate wees: (.mpeg, mpeg2 .MP4, .wmv, .mt2s of .mov). Aangesien talent nie net beperk is tot ‘n verhoogoptrede soos sang, voordrag of musikale instrumente nie, sal talent buite verhoogverband soos bv. ‘n sesjarige kind wat ‘n dubbele bolmakiesie kan doen op ‘n veilige gimnastiekmat, ook aanvaar word. Deur die dag sal daar verskeie opvoerings wees op ‘n verhoog voor die paviljoen. Daar gaan ‘n judo-vertoning, ‘n honde-

skool vertoning, verskeie dansgroepe en plaaslike talent wees. Die bekende sangers, Sean Miles en Jan Rhaap, tree die middag op en natuurlik die groot trekpleister Johan Badenhorst van Voetspore-faam op TV. Johan gaan interessante staaltjies oor sy wedervaringe vertel en daar sal geleentheid gegee wees om na sy uitstalling te kyk. Die organiseerders van hierdie groot skou verkoop elke Saterdag kaartjies by Makro Vaal vir die kans om ‘n Polo Vivo 1.4 Conceptline te wen vir slegs R50. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Triangle Squash has just completed the Summer League. It was sponsored by Atlas Industrial Systems, which ran from November 2014 to February 2015. Teams are made up of five players, with league and nonleague players, men and women and all levels of ability playing together. The games winner is determined by points so that every point earned contributes to the final result. The scoring system means that games are very competitive and allow each player to contribute to the end result. The 2014/15 season was won by the Rhinos who edged out the Lions at the final hurdle. Summer League is a social league, which is a very good platform from which beginners can start getting into the game of squash. The Mustangs will also participate in the annual Golden Oldies Nationals Tournament as from 2016. The Mustangs are the first Golden Oldies rugby team that will represent the Vaal area and, what with the rich history of rugby in the Vaal region, future expansion is planned into the Vereeniging/Vanderbijlpark areas. VAALPARK. - Wanneer die sesjarige Chanté Pieterse haar hondjie liefdevol teen haar dogtertjielyfie vasdruk, lyk sy soos enige ander sorgelose meisietjie, maar daar is ‘n verskil: Chanté is op 23 Oktober verlede jaar met akute limfoblastiese leukemie, ‘n vorm van bloedkanker, gediagnoseer. Al kry sy intensiewe chemoterapie en al moet sy 16 pille per dag sluk, glimlag dié fyn blondekoppie steeds maklik en is dit dikwels sy wat haar ouers bemoedig en regop hou. Die Pieterses van Vaalpark was ‘n gelukkige voorstedelike gesin soos enige ander, totdat Chanté in Oktober verlede jaar ‘n “verkouetjie” opgedoen het en dit net nie kon afskud nie. Ouers ken mos ‘n kind en ma Chantel en pa Johan se kommer het saam met Chanté se koors begin klim. Hulle is terug dokter toe, waar verskeie moontlikhede oorweeg is - van mangelontsteking tot ‘n kindersiekte - maar na intensiewe beenmurgtoetse het hulle die verpletterende diagnose gekry. Chanté se akute limfoblastiese leukemie sou vereis dat sy in die opvolgende maande feitlik pal in die hospitaal sou moes deurbring vir gevorderde behandeling. “’n Duisend emosies en gedagtes gaan deur jou. Jy vrees vir jou kind se lewe; jy stres oor jou werk omrede jy besef dat hierdie

nie net ‘n paar dae in die hospitaal gaan wees nie. Jou lewe verander drasties. “Ek het tydens Chanté se behandeling tot dusver kontak met twee ander mammas gehad wat hul werk verloor het omdat hul werkgewers hulle nie kon akkommodeer nie,” sê mev. Pieterse. “Ek wil namens myself, my man en veral my kindjie dankie sê aan my werkgewer, Century Electrical in Vereeniging, dat hulle my ten volle ondersteun en bystaan deur die moeilikste tyd van ons lewe. Chanté se eerste vlak van behandeling het vereis dat sy vir 33 dae gehospitaliseer moes word. Dit het beteken dat ek 24 uur per dag by my kind was en afwesig by die werk. Daar lê nog drie vlakke van behandeling voor wat etlike maande sal duur. Danksy my werkgewer weet ek my werk is veilig en ek kan fokus op my kind se behandeling. Die feit dat hulle my 100% akkommodeer en my salaris ten volle elke maand betaal, spreek boekdele,” sê sy. Chanté is ‘n graad 0-leerling by Vaalpark Primêre Skool en hulle ondersteun haar ten volle. Hulle het haar ouers verseker dat Chanté se plekkie in die skool veilig is vir wanneer sy haar skoolloopbaan kan voortsit. Chanté het verlede week met die volgende fase van haar behandeling in die Donald Gordon Mediese Sentrum by die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand begin. Die behandeling is van die beste wat in die land beskikbaar is,

maar kos sowat R9 000 per keer. Hoewel die Pieterses ‘n mediese fonds het en pa Johan ook ‘n goeie betrekking as instandhoudingsbestuurder by Bersheba Lodge buite Sasolburg het, is hul uitgawes skielik geweldig hoog en hulle moet die rieme dun sny om by al hul verpligtinge uit te kom. “Totdat Chanté gediagnoseer is, was ons in die geseënde posisie dat ons ander in nood kon help. Nou is óns in daardie posisie. Dit is nog moeilik vir ons om daaraan gewoond te raak,” sê Chantel. Die daaglikse uitgawes van brandstof Rand toe, die bybetalings op doktersrekeninge en medikasie is eenvoudig skrikwekkend. Enigiemand wat die Pieterses wil bystaan kan Vaalweekblad SMS by 083 246 0523. Alle aanbiedinge van hulp sal na die Pieterse-gesin gekanaliseer word. “Ons grootste wens is egter dat Chanté ten volle moet genees. Wat ons nou veral nodig het, is gebed. VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging en meer spesifiek die area rondom die Dick Fouriestadion het Sondagoggend (1 Maart) tot ’n stilstand gekom met die 41ste Cape Cate Marathon oor 42.2km wat plaasgevind het. As kwalifiserende wedloop vir die gewilde Comarades Marathon sak duisende langasems jaarliks op Vereeniging toe en vanjaar was geen uitsondering nie. Altesaam 150 000 watersakkies is tydens die 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km en 5kmwedlope verbruik. Daar word altyd baie op

die voorlopers en wenners van wedlope en marathons gefokus, maar om dié verskynsel beter te verstaan, moet mens die gemiddelde deelnemer onder oë neem. Party is deurwinter en ander beskik bloot net nie oor die fisieke vermoëns of tipiese langafstand liggaamsbou nie, maar dit is irrelevant. Deursettingsvermoë en ’n onblusbare veggees is die brandstof wat dié deelnemers aan die gang hou. Vir hierdie atlete is dit ’n veel groter oorwinning om laaste oor die wenstreep te draf as om die wedloop te wen.

Deelname is waaroor dit alles vir dié atlete gaan. Hulle was uitgeput maar kon nog krag bymekaar skraap om die fotograwe te groet.

Oud maar nog nie koud! Een van die oudste atlete kom gebukkend maar vasberade by die eindpunt van die Vaal Marathon aan.

MEYERTON. - On Sunday March 1 South African amputee para-triathlete, Stan Andrews, competed and placed 9th overall in the 2015 Buffalo City ITU World Paratriathlon Event. The event hosted a total of 39 top male and female international para-triathletes in all five categories. The men’s PT4 category held the fiercest competition with 16 entrants (six of whom were South Africans) of the total 39 entrants taking part in this category. Andrews reported the swim to be tough with a heavy side-current that affected all the competitors equally. Entrants were given the

opportunity to make use of a ‘pre-transition’, where athletes are able to remove their wetsuits and put on their prostheses in an area near the water. Despite having competed in many other triathlons, the ‘pre-transition’ was a first for Andrews, who felt that it cost him valuable seconds, causing his Transition 1 time to be 30 seconds slower than in previous events. The bike course went well for Andrews, who feels that cycling is his weakest discipline of the triathlon event. The wind played into his hands and helped his climb back up the express way, leaving him ready to jump

into Transition 2 after two loops. The run was challenging for Andrews who, after overtaking fellow South African competitor Nico Nel was in 10th place 28 seconds behind Spaniard Rafael Solis Torres. Ultimately, Andrews placed 9th out of the field due to the disqualification of a fellow competitor, the reason for which is unknown, and was the first South African to finish. In nine weeks’ time, Andrews will compete in Egypt with the goal of scoring enough points to compete in the Grand Final in Chicago, USA.
