EVATON. - The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development under its Sustainable Resources Management directorate in partnership with Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) - recently held a Wetland Facelift Drive in Evaton. Learners from Zitha Primary School, including 500 community members and dignitaries, filled the Mafatsane Community Centre to participate in the World Wetland Month activities. Twelve-year-old Neo Mogotsi received

prizes courtesy of the Rand Water Foundation awareness team after she outdid herself by answering most of the questions. Learners were quizzed about wetlands, where the country sources its water and how scientists detect and treat disease-inducing water organisms. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Veterinary Services Chief director Dr Malcolm De Bude says, “This year’s theme is relevant and rightly calls on young people to actively participate in protecting the environment.” The community, armed with

the Mafatsane wetland was unveiled on the day. It is estimated that over 35 - 60% of South Africa’s wetlands have already been destroyed through bad practices and management. Most of the pristine wetlands left in the Gauteng province are in Protected areas. Wetlands also purify water and provide habitats for many different plants and animals. Some communities make a living by harvesting fibre to make crafts to sell. There are also medicinal plants that rely on wetlands for survival.

Team DA worked hard at Vaal Marathon The Democratic Alliance (DA) recently worked for 6 hours nonstop at their water point on Sugarbush Drive. This was at the annual Vaal Marathon on March 1. The team encouraged more than 5 000 runners by handing out coke, iced water, watermelon and sweets. Their constituency leaders, Councillors Danie Hoffman, Jaco Karsten and Simon Mollo, joined the rest of the Councillors and Activists. RUSTERVAAL.- Democratic Alliance (DA) Sedibeng mourns the death of Councillor David Ronald (Ronny)Ragebult. DA Gauteng South Regional Deputy Chairperson in Sedibeng Dady Mollo states that the death of Cllr Ragebuklt is a great loss to the DA in its entirety. “A week before the Democratic Alliance Regional Inaugural Congress that is set to take place, the Democratic Alliance lost a stalwart and councillor in Emfuleni Local Municipality,” says Mollo. Ragebult was laid to rest at the Rust-ter-Vaal Cemetery last weekend. Mollo says Ragebult was `one of our hardestworking councillors in the Emfuleni Local Municipality. “Ronny cared deeply about Sedibeng region and worked tirelessly to bring justice and progress to the people of his beloved region. “His deep commitment to improving the lives of his fellow men and women was always his driving motivation and he always worked very hard to achieve that.” Mollo concludes.

Die egpaar het 50 jaar gelede ewig trou aan mekaar beloof. Hulle het hul 50ste huweliksherdenking met ’n verrassinspartytjie wat deur hul kinders gehou is, gevier. Die egpaar het vier kinders, waarvan hulle een seun in die ouderdom van agt aan die dood moes afstaan.Vandag spog hulle met vyf kleinkinders. EVATON. - Unemployed young people have embarked on an educational system to help kids with their homework and young development activities. On Saturday, the `Evaton West Cling’ - the initiative of Wits Water Rand Drop Outs and CEPD - launched a library for the Evaton west community. This library will be the first of its kind that consists of teachers and learners and young development. Project manager Tholakele Mbewe says coming up with such a brilliant project was not easy. But the goal was to create an educative environment for the kids. “Evaton has only one library, which makes it difficult for children to access information. Life has changed today. Children need to be

In the morning a five-kilometre march in which school-uniformed learners participated was conducted by the Evaton Cling. The march was for awareness of education and its importance to society, said Siphiwe Hlalele. Learners were given a chance to read their favourite books to parents just to show what they do at the Evaton Cling every day. Mbewe says they don’t just give children books to read but they make sure they understand why they need those books and help them with their homework. The launch was a great success, as parents can attest. They would like to see the Evaton Cling grow further into other areas.

Midvaal Local Municipality’s spokesperson Aaliyah Dangor says, “The beneficiary of this year’s walk is a non-profit organisation called ‘Stand with Stan’, which donates prosthetics and offers support to those who cannot afford them.” The founder of the organisation, Stan Andrews, will walk on the day. Andrews will also share his inspirational story with participants. Born with a deformed foot, Stan has always used a prosthetic leg, and yet has managed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, cycle the 94.7, swim the Midmar Mile and is currently participating in national triathlon competitions, building up to the Paralympics. “Midvaal and 90.6fm would like to challenge individuals, families, schools, businesses and civic groups, to join the walk in aid of their own cause, or just for a fun day out,” Dangor adds. CEOs cycle 600 km for Women of Vision

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Boland 5 Team comprises five very brave, handsome young men and successful CEOs from the Vaal who have taken it upon themselves to support the Women of Vision Non-Profit Organisation through a very enduring and difficult cycling race – the Bestmed Tour de Boland. The five-day race took place from March 2 to 6 and was set against the backdrop of the magnificent Boland which encompasses some of the most beautiful towns, including Franschhoek, Worcester, Ceres, Tulbagh, Riebeeck-kasteel, Wellington and Paarl. They raced almost 600km which included the Cape Argus and raised R580 000 for the non-profit organisation, Women of Vision. The five cyclists who participated are Joao da Encarnação of Sizwe Staff Solutions, Paul Rebelo of Kentz Engineers and Constructors, Daniel dos Santos of Domento Mechanical Services, Branko Mladina of Mladina Trading, and DJ Hough of Murray & Roberts. They come from varied backgrounds and

companies but had one goal in mind: to complete the race, forge and strengthen friendships and, most importantly, to ride for a purpose and to support the charity. In the words of Paul Rebelo: “In the end, we all made it, no need for walking shoes, and celebrated with good friends and family who had arrived at the finish line to greet and celebrate with us. AUMA donates R1 000 to elderly

Vereeniging Seventh Day Adventist Church in Three Rivers Retirement Village received a sponsorship of R1 000. This was thanks to the generosity of AUMA SA in February. The sponsorship serves to aid toward the acquisition of a minibus for the parishioners of Vereeniging SDA Church, many of whom are senior citizens living without the luxury of transport to church, shops, and sundry important destinations. AUMA, which stands for ArmaturenUnd Maschinen-Antriebe (Valve- and Machine Actuators) is a fully owned subsidiary of the AUMA Riester GmBH Germany Group – one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electric actuators and valve gearboxes. Founded 30 years ago, this South African subsidiary moved to its current location in Springs in 1993, comprising a thriving sales and technical centre ever since. Vereeniging SDA Church serves 140 active members, including about 63 families. The parishioners heartily thank AUMA SA for this generous gift.

Lots of laughs at hockey fundraiser Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - There were lots of laughs on General Hertzog Road in Three Rivers as motorists realised that the people standing at robots were actually boys dressed up as girls. This was an initiative by the Dokkie Warriors, the first hockey team of Hoërskool Dr. Malan to raise funds for their upcoming Hockey tournament that will take place in Port Shepstone on 27 April. The boys were seen wearing colourful clothing and make-up to impress motorists. It seems that the plan was executed to the point that motorists could not stop laughing and ended up giving the boys a donation. Motorist Teboho Mokoena says, “This was such a good and fun initiative. We normally come across people who just demand money at the robots but this is something different. It is for a good cause. The boys were raising funds for a sporting activity” Team member Corné Esterhuizen says, “We are going to carry on with this project for the next few weeks and on March 10 we also waitered at Spur in Meyerton. “We hope that people will come through to support us.” Esterhuizen concludes.

SEBOKENG. - What was expected to be a Public Violence meeting was calmed down when Executive Emfuleni Mayor Gretha Hlongwane responded positively to questions and suggestions. The Zone 7 Concerned Residents Forum invited Cllr Hlongwane to respond to their burning questions. The meeting at Zone 7 Stadium on March 10 has seen a distinctly low profile from members of the private security company, Police and bodyguards of the mayor. Amos Mtambo, chairperson of Residents, and his deputy chairperson Bongane Khumalo, were the first to bombard the mayor and her entourage with questions. The community demands that government builds RDP houses in back yards, complains that main contractors are from outside the region, objects to electricity transformers that keep tripping. Other complaints were that the community does not have access to the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), that contractors take ages to complete roads and that Zone 7 is excluded from the integrated development programme (IDP). Sewerage pipes need attention, long grass is rampant on open space, `nyaope’ addicts are troubling the community. In her response, the mayor said it is the responsibility of everyone to report crime, vandalism and criminals. She said 30% of the contractors are indeed local. The EPWP is the responsibility of the Sedibeng District. All the wards are included in the IDP. Most of the community is not paying rates and services. Unemployed people must register via their ward councillor to go on the indigence policy. Cllr Hlongwane visited the community of Zone 7B. She advised people to registere for RDP houses at the Housing Department.

Security at building sites important VEREENIGING. - Building and renovation sites could be vulnerable to theft. This is according to Clive Humphrey of ADT Security Central Region. Humphrey says it is a common for criminals to blend in with building staff on busy construction sites in order to commit unnoticed crimes. Humphrey’s advice to contractors or owners is to assign one person to keep track of temporary or day labourers so that outsiders can immediately be identified. “The full identity details of each person working on the site must be recorded; there must be a fence around the property and security lights at night if your building work extends over a couple of months or longer.” Humphrey adds that contractors must also keep the site neat so that anything out of place or missing is noticed immediately. “Plan the delivery of building materials close to the time of their use so that they do not stand on site for too long. Valuable or highcost items must be delivered only if they can be installed on the same day and secured,” adds Humphrey. Humphrey’s last piece of advice is that people tell their security service-provider or neighbourhood watch that there will be building activity at a property, making sure that site managers have emergency contact numbers on hand. VANDERBIJLPARK. - In 1972 het ‘n klein skooltjie met die naam Hoërskool Tertius ontstaan, maar die naam het later verander na Hoërskool Driehoek. Op Saterdag, 7 Maart 2015 het ‘n baie spesiale groepie mense bymekaar gekom om ‘n ietwat historiese reünie te vier. Wat die geleentheid merkwaardig gemaak het, was die feit dat hulle die eerste matrieks van Hoërskool Driehoek was! Die skool se begin was in ‘n paar lelike asbesgeboutjies in Vanderbijlpark met kin-

ders wat van Hoërskool Transvalia en Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark gewerf is. Die skool se bynaam was destyds Kakieboslaagte omdat alles so dor en bruin was. Nie ‘n grasperk in sig gewees nie! So het Driehoek sy grondslag begin op uitstekende onderrig in die Vaaldriehoek. Dit was interessante dae en menige omval van die lag staaltjies was vertel oor die ontstaan van die derde Hoërskool in ons kontrei. Twee onderwysers, Marcellus Bodenstein en Nico de Jager, was ook teenwoordig. In daardie vroeë jare was hulle altwee jong man-

ne, vars uit die universiteit, en soos hulle tereg genoem het, het hulle saam met die kinders gegroei. Dit was ‘n heuglike dag, met wonderlike onthou en kuier. Die funksie is gereël deur Judie Breedt, oud-Hoekie van 1974, wat dit vir almal ‘n onvergeetlike dag gemaak het. Die groepie mense het weer eens ‘n band gesmee soos in hulle skooldae en beplan om dit so ver moontlik ‘n jaarlikse instelling te maak. Hierdie was die kinders wat Hoërskool Driehoek die formidabele skool gemaak het wat dit vandag is!

Engine and Tractor Fair at the Heritage Museum

On Sunday March 22 an Engine and Tractor Day will be held at the Heritage Museum situated in Vaal Drive, Sylviavale, starting early

at 08:00. There’s lots of parking at the Museum and on the adjoining property. Bring the whole family. An entrance charge of R20 is applicable for adults. School-going children go in free. Remember to retain entrance tickets as they qualify you for a few lucky draws. As many as four steam engines will be steamed up and running simultaneously. The oldest steam engine is a Ruston Proctor dating

from 1894, which makes it more than 120 years old. Not to be outdone by the steam engines, four single-piston tractors will be putting on a live show. Amongst them will be a Bulldog Lanz, Steyr, Kramer and Allgaier, all makes of long, long ago, but rarely seen today. The popular Village Market will be open for business and might attract those who are

perhapsv not so mechanically inclined. The restaurant will serve plates of food and boerewors rolls while popular craft beers are for sale, as well as other beverages. There’s plenty of places to sit and enjoy the company of family and friends, either in the restaurant or under the big plane trees, and listen to live music from 10:00 till 15:00.
