‘Kowie’, wat gaan hier aan

VEREENIGING. - Inwoners van Kowiestraat in Drie Riviere hoef nie ver te gaan soek om ’n 4x4 roete aan te durf nie. Dié straat, wat al meer as drie jaar vol slaggate is, is uiteindelik in Februarie ‘reggemaak’. Die kontrakteurs het egter halwe werk gedoen

en nou sit die inwoners met hul hande in hul hare. Volgens een van die inwoners het werkers die pad oopgegrawe om die slaggate reg te maak, maar twee dae daarna is daar net grys oor die pad gegooi. Die teer wat verwyder is, is sommer langs die sypaadjie gegooi en in die middernagtelike ure verwyder. Sommige mo-

toriste ry aan die verkeerde kant van die pad, terwyl ander sommer oor die gras ry om hierdie pad te vermy. Volgens DA-raadslid Dalene Venter van Wyk 1, was Kowiestraat op die lys van paaie wat dringend aandag moes kry omdat daar so baie slaggate is. “Kontrakteurs het aan die pad begin werk

en toe ewe skielik net verdwyn. Wanneer ek navraag by die Emfuleni Plaaslike Munisipaliteit doen, word ek net meegedeel dat die pad nog aandag sal kry,” sê sy. Dalene het inwoners se klagtes aan die munisipaliteit gerapporteer, maar tot op hede is daar nog niks aan die pad gedoen nie.

Dit is hoe Kowiestraat in Drie Riviere tans lyk, nadat daar vir twee dae gewerk is om die slaggate reg te maak. Daar is nou net grys wat oor die pad gestrooi lê.

Change must be embraced by all Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A huge debate was recently sparked by Sedibeng District Municiplaity (SDM) Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng. This was when he delivered the 2015 Human Rights Lecture at the North-West University (NWU) Vaal Campus. Mofokeng said: “When I was asked to come and give this Memorial Lecture I reflected on three things. Firstly, I remembered how the death of 69 protesters and the serious maiming of 180 others by the apartheid security forces on 21 March 1960. This became a turning point in the struggle for freedom and human dignity. “The unarmed protestors were protesting against the hated `dompasess’ – which racially barred the majority of South Africans from enjoying their full rights to citizenship.” Mofokeng sparked statements that racial struggles were not issues of the past, that this styruggle still affected learners today - especially in Higher Learning Institutions. They are still dealing with it. While VUT Deputy

Vice Chancellor Professor Gordon Zide agreed with the statements from students, the words he used were that `change must be embraced by all’. Zide said, “In order for transformation to happen, it needs to be embraced by all. Our institutions need change-makers who are the people who can really form part of a mainstream transformation.” On education Mofokeng said: “There are still inequalities, especially in education, that originate from the past. According to research 35 percent of first-year students drop out. Many factors cause this, such as financial aid and so on.” Mofokeng told students that the municipality was doing everything in its power to help with financial aid to needy students. “As a municipality, we are doing everything in our power to help students. You as students need to study in faculties that can

help develop the Sedibeng region.” Mofokeng added that this region’s Niche had been identified as water (hydropolis) and that the mentality of people has to be geared towards what it is that water can do to grow

the economy in Sedibeng. The event was attended by dignitaries from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the NWU, local municipalities and students in general.

Police nab dagga suspect Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - A tip from the public resulted in a suspect and dagga worth some R80 000 on the street falling into the hands of the police. Warrant Officer Mzimkhule Mthimkulu said Police were patrolling the Sebokeng Hotel area when they received a tip-off from the public about a man selling dagga. They followed up on the lead, culminating in the suspect, who is the owner of the

house, being arrested in hostel 4 block H room 23 on March 11 at about 09:30. Police searched him, found four fingerpackets of dagga. They further proceeded to search the house. A big plastic bag of dagga was found hidden under his bed. He was arrested and charged with possession of dagga, said W/O Mthimkulu. He will soon appear at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court.

VLU kies bestuur vir 2015 VEREENIGING. - Die Vroue Landbouunie (VLU) van Drie Riviere het hul nuwe bestuur gekies vir 2015 en is opgewonde oor die jaar wat voorlê. Die groep vroue het op 19 Maart by die NG kerksaal in Palmstraat bymekaargekom vir hul maan-

delikse vergadering. Hulle het ook goed gevaar by die streekkompetisie en het twee plekke op die punteleer opgeskuif. Mev. Mary Hoogenhout (89) het ook die vergadering bygewoon en is die enigste oorlewende stigterslid van dié VLU-tak, wat al 58 jaar bestaan.

Three arrested for theft VEREENIGING. - Vereening SAPS recently had to rush to the corner of Leslie Street and Rhodes Avenue after receiving a complaint about suspects seizing goods from a parked vehicle. Vereeniging SAPS spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says, “Our members responded immediately and on arrival three suspects were running in different directions. They were later arrested by our officers.” Funda adds that the suspects were found in possession of the following - a Makirt

hammer drill, a 20m extension cord, a set of head saws, all to the value of R5 000. One suspect was found in possession of dagga.” The owner of the property managed to identify the property as his. Suspects have been detained at the Vereeniging Police Station and Police are investigating a case of possession of suspected stolen property and theft out of a motor vehicle. Funda reports that the suspects will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court soon.

VEREENIGING. - The motor industry is a fast paced, rapidly changing and challenging environment. This is the view of Dieter Fauconnier, owner of Supertune in Vereeniging, who last year completed the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) Master Technician Training Programme. Fauconnier says, “Auto workshop owners need to change their focus. It’s not only about retaining customers anymore, you now need to offer a multitude of skills to be able to advise on and service vehicles across the board.” Since completing the course, Fauconnier says he can confidently offer a greater depth of service to his clients. “The most important skill that I acquired was being able to diagnose with a lot more confidence when it comes to complicated systems,” he adds. MIWA introduced their Master Technician train-

ing programme aimed at up-skilling qualified technicians in the trade four years ago. “These assessment programmes look at all the levels of skills needed. We test for detailed levels of theory, application and diagnosis. This way the technicians can find out their areas of strength and weakness and focus their training efforts only where it is needed,” says chairman of Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), Les Mc Master. Fauconnier completed his course in record time, only 18 months, dedicating weekends and leave time to complete the programme, while at the same time running his workshop full-time. “I would definitely suggest this programme to all technicians. Not only do they benefit from enhanced knowledge, they’re also in a better position to guide the people who work for them. This ensures consistent, good quality work and more satisfied customers,” Fauconnier concludes.

Schalk le Roux, ‘n bekende gesig in Sasolburg en talentvolle joernalis en fotograaf het met sy unieke wit en swart foto in die afdeling vir Best Portrait Photography gewen. Retha Fitchat, redakteur van Vaalweekblad en Ster en Amé van Rooyen, advertensiebestuurder van MooiVaal Media, het eervolle vermelding ontvang vir die spog 50 jaar-bylaag wat laasjaar soveel genot aan vele Vaalweekblad-lesers verskaf het. Mnr. Thys Foord, hoofbestuurder van MooiVaal Media, het sy spanne in die Vaaldriehoek en Noordwes gelukgewens en gesê hy is verheug dat sy personeel se harde werk op so ‘n manier beloon word. “Dis baie maklik om die lang, en soms baie ongerieflike ure wat personeel werk, mis te kyk en daarom is geleenthede soos hierdie wat erkenning aan uitnemende werk gee, baie belangrik. Ons is trots daarop om ons personeel se prestasies met die gemeenskap te deel,” sê hy. Solidariteit Helpende Hand het pas ’n nasionale platform bekendgestel waar persone as potensiële pleegouers kan registreer. Die organisasie beoog om die dringende behoefte aan pleegouers met behulp van hierdie platform te takel. Helpende Hand kry gereeld met maatskaplike gevalle te doen en werk nou saam met maatskaplike organisasies soos die SuidAfrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) en die Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR). Dié organisasies ondervind ’n groot tekort aan pleegouers. Helpende Hand het daarom besluit om saam met hierdie organisasies ’n platform te skep om dié probleem aan te pak. Volgens Isabel Faurie, maatskaplike werker by Helpende Hand, weet mense wat pleegouers wil word dikwels nie watter proses om te volg nie. Daarenteen het maatskaplike organisasies ’n dringende behoefte aan pleegouers, maar geen manier om hulle te identifiseer of te kontak nie. Helpende Hand se nuwe platform sal skakeling tussen die onderskeie partye bewerkstellig en vergemaklik. Die organisasie het egter geen statutêre magte nie en is nie by die keuring van pleegouers of die plasing van kinders in pleegsorg betrokke nie. Volgens Annette van Loggerenberg, bestuurder van CMR-Noord, is daar landswyd ’n reusebehoefte aan pleegouers. Sy verduidelik dat CMR-Noord slegs dienste aan Gauteng, Noordwes en Limpopo lewer, maar dat daar in hierdie drie provinsies elke jaar ’n behoefte aan ongeveer 200 pleegouers is. Verskeie faktore dra by tot die tekort aan pleegouers, insluitend die uitdagings wat met pleegsorg gepaardgaan. “Pleegsorg is ’n groot verantwoordelikheid omdat pleegouers verantwoordelikheid aanvaar vir die daaglikse versorging van ander persone se biologiese kinders,” verduidelik Van Loggerenberg. “Kinders wat by pleegouers geplaas word, is dikwels erg getraumatiseerd en hul moeilike gedrag stel hoë eise aan pleegouers. Weens emosionele en fisiese verwaarlosing het die kinders dikwels verskeie gesondheidsprobleme en kognitiewe agterstande.” Maatskaplike organisasies bied ondersteuning aan pleegouers om die proses te vergemaklik. “CMR-Noord bied ’n driedag-opleidingskursus aan potensiële pleegouers en gee ook vir hulle ’n handleiding om hulle vir die uitdagings van pleegsorg voor te berei. The problem with fast-fix diets is that there is no fast-fix. Such diets are just not sustainable. “People need to understand that the correct calorie intake can actually work to their advantage,” says Gareth Powell, National Marketing Coordinator at Ultimate Sports Nutrition (USN). “Give a calorie a hug today” is fantastic for food lovers out there, but USN stresses that it must be the right calories. Since calories are simply a measurement of energy availability, and all calories serve as fuel, in

essence they are neither good nor bad: “Good calories are foods and foodstuffs that promote high levels of nutrient intake, while limiting calorie intake. Consequently, foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains provide high levels of nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and fibre when correlated to the volume of calories they supply.” Bad calories include processed, high-sugar foods and alcohol that offer few nutrients, but an overload of calories: “You should try to eliminate or minimise the intake of such food stuffs.” The on-going calorie awareness in society is accompanied by the desire to ‘burn calories’. Simply taking

part in 15 - 30 minutes of activity at least every second day will increase your level of energy expenditure, improving your body weight and fitness level. As you adapt to the exercise, you can increase the frequency, duration and intensity of the activity to further increase your potential energy loss. Powell has noted that society is starting to slowly move away from the culture of caloriecounting. Stating that dieticians, nutritionists and the media are in general slowly starting to turn the tide to driving a lifestyle focus, where healthy, wholesome foods become the norm. Powell states that the role of supplements needs to be further clarified since they never replace food: “There is no doubt that scientifically developed supplements can help individuals fill

their dietary shortfalls, playing a small but very important role in the completion of a healthy eating plan. “It simply comes down to the selection of the correct supplementation for your specific needs.” States Powell, “Everyone needs a different amount of calories, depending on factors such as age, weight, and activity level. “Simply focus on well balanced, healthy food sources and you may not need to ever consider your calorie-intake as a medium of measuring dietary success. Eat smaller snacksized meals every three hours (totaling 5 - 6 meals daily), from both food and supplement sources that have a protein, carbohydrates and fat balance. “You will then be well on your way to a successful healthy eating plan.” concludes Powell.

Die griepinenting word chemies saamgestel om ten minste teen vyf van die grootste virusse in ‘n spesifieke jaar beskerming te bied. As jy dus siek word, mag dit jou liggaam se reaksie wees op ander tipe virusse wat reeds aanwesig is. Die griepinenting beskerm jou teen griepvirusse, nie ander tipes virusse nie. 2. Nog ‘n moontlike rede is dat jy reeds aan die griepvirus blootgestel is nog voordat jy simptome begin toon het. Loadshedding...are you prepared? MEYERTON . - Eskom recently announced its implementation of stage 2 loadshedding. According to Eskom, this is due to a shortage of generation capacity. This has resulted in a lot of confusion and speculation amongst Vaal Triangle residents regarding load shedding and how schedules work. Midvaal Local Municipality has found a better way to explain all of this, including a how-to guide that will get residents through `dark’ days. There are three sources of electricity in the region, namely Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), Midvaal Local Municipality and mainstream electricity supplier Eskom. The Midvaal Municipality understands the frustration of residents and is currently en-

gaging with Eskom to have schedules provided for all areas of Midvaal. Media Liaison officer Aaliyah Dangor says, “Residents can off-set load shedding by reducing energy consumption in both residential and business areas by following easy tips, such as turning off electrical devices which are not in use, choosing to use a clothes line than using a tumble-dryer, buying energy efficient light bulbs, installing a solar geyser, controlling the amount of hot water usage at home.” Dangor adds that while energy efficiency is important, people must also think about being ready for load shedding. “There are many things that can be used in the absence of electricity, such as solar

lighting, gas heaters and stoves, including candles and generators.” Dangers are associated with some of these products but they can really be useful if precautions are taken. All these products though will enable residents to continue with their household chores. “Load shedding can be such a pain, especially during the winters when it gets dark very quickly and the weather is ice cold. This is something that can happen at anytime and

residents need to be ready at all times,” Dangor concludes.

Hierdie Rooibokboud resep ‘is to die for’

Een ding wat my nog altyd dronkslaan is die voorstedelike legende waarmee “in-mense” iets beskryf wat besonder lekker is: “It’s to die for”. As hy lekker is, sal ek liewer vir hom LEWE. Dis presies hoe ek voel oor hierdie Rooibokboud-resep. BESTANDDELE: 1 Rooibokboud 250 g spek, in 3 cm repies gesny 1 koppie rooi asyn 2 tlp sout 2 tlp bruin suiker ‘n handvol rosyntjies 2 groot knoffelhuisies, gekap 1 tlp peper ½ tlp gemaalde gemmer Vir die marinade benodig u: 1 gesnyde ui 1 lourierblaar 6 heel naeltjies 3 koppies rooiwyn 2 tlp olie Vir die verglansing benodig u: 4 tlp fyn appelkooskonfyt 2 tlp meel 4 tlp sjerrie METODE: Plaas spek, 2 tlp asyn, 1 tlp sout en 1 tlp

suiker in ’n klein houer en marineer dit so 45 minute. Maak gaatjies in die wildsboud met ‘n skerp mes en vul dit met ‘n rosyntjie, ‘n stukkie knoffel en spek. Meng peper, gemmer, die oorblywende sout en suiker en vryf dit met die hand in die boud. Gebruik ‘n bakpan groot genoeg vir die boud en meng die bestanddele vir die marinade met die oorblywende asyn. Laat die mengsel kook en voeg die boud dan by. Draai die boud so 10 minute totdat dit rondom geseël het. Verwyder dit van die hitte en laat dit in die marinade afkoel. As dit verkoel het, los dit 24 uur in ‘n koel plek en draai dit ‘n paar keer om. Plaas die boud in ‘n bakpan met Die smaaklike Rooibok-boud ‘n koppie marinade en sit dit 10 minute in ‘n oond wat tot 220°C voorverhit is die vleis gereeld en voeg meer marinade by wanneer nodig. om te skroei. Meng die meel, konfyt en sjerrie en smeer Verlaag die hitte tot 180°C vir die oorblywende baktyd. Bak dit tussen 8 en 10 minute dit oor die vleis om dit oor die laaste 10 minuper 500 g vleis vir rou tot halfgaar. Bedruip te te verglans.

Wanner dit gaar is, sit die boud op ‘n opdienbord en laat dit in ‘n warm plek rus vir 10 tot 15 minute. Bedien met groente en geel rosyne. Bron: Proud Hunter

MEYERTON. - The Midvaal-90.6fm inaugural Fun Walk for Human Rights Day was a huge success and was attended by all. Local businesses, NPOs, families and school children all geared up to take part in the event that would contribute to charity. The 5km route began in Mitchell Street and went through Meyerton into Sicelo. The atmosphere was buzzing, with children singing, and various groups chanting their own war cries along the way. Several groups also dressed up in `wacky’ costumes to set the mood for the entire day.

Midvaal Local Municipal Media Liason officer Aaliyah Dangor says: “There were several stalls set up at the municipal grounds, including the `Stand with Stan’ Stall displaying different types of prosthetic limbs, the CANSA stall where people could get their hair spray-painted, South African National Blood Services (SANBS), Old Mutual providing a voluntary testing station for general health, the local Community Police Forums selling `boerewors’ rolls, and a few local businesses.”The Midvaal Arts Institute performed several dances for an appreciative

LAKESIDE. - Midvaal Local Municipal Mayor Bongani Baloyi officially opened a state-of-the-art Library for the community of Lakeside and surrounding areas recently. The Lakeside Library’s opening comes just in time for South African Library Week (SALW) which was observed from March 14 - 21. Baloyi says, “Libraries have always been about building communities in Midvaal, and today’s opening will pay tribute to that. Our libraries in Meyerton, Sicelo and now Lakeside, are linked to our community halls, so that they can serve as the centre of communities, bringing together people, providing knowledge, and opening up new opportunities, and this is part of the concept of providing one-stop service centres for communities.” Baloyi continued that it was the responsibility of the community to ensure that the building was maintained in its current state. “I urge the Lakeside community to take ownership and ensure the facility is used responsibly and to safe–guard against vandalism and theft. The facility belongs to you, your children and grandchildren. Do not let anyone take this gift, and the opportunities it offers away from you.” Baloyi concludes. The Deputy Director of Library Services Wendy Sibeko says, “Midvaal Local Municipality is known for the finer things. You are the smallest municipality, but you continue to beat the bigger municipalities.

Changing the world one project at a time VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Mall management together with a number of their tenants - Bidvest Bank, Dischem, King Pie, Pick n Pay and Wakaberry - recently visited the Bophelong Children’s Home in order to make a change in the lives of the children. The project forms part of Vaal Mall’s “Mandela Day is Every Day” initiative that aims to better the lives of people in the community on a more regular basis and not only once a year for a couple of minutes.
