Curaçao

Sponsored by Villa Seashell Oceanfront Vacation Rental Villa at Coral Estate, Curaçao Probably the most significant two things that sets Curaçao apart from its neighbor islands are: Curaçao has a myriad of beautiful little sandy beaches. Most of these beaches are relatively small intimate spots that are out in the boonies. Many of them don’t even have any resorts or even houses near them. It can be easy to find a beach almost to yourself.

The lively capital of Curaçao, Willemstad, is a welcoming, upbeat destination crammed with shops and museums, and a maze of twisting residential streets. Its colorful colonial architecture has been awarded the UNESCO Heritage status.

About Curaçao Curaçao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, 20 miles off the Venezuelan coast. It forms the Dutch ABC islands together with the islands Bonaire (to the east) and Aruba (to the west). The Country of Curaçao, which includes the main island plus the small, uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao ("Little Curaçao"), is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It has a population of over 150,000 on an area of 171 sq mile and its capital is Willemstad.

Did you know that Curaçao is outside the hurricane belt?

The coastline along the south is irregular, peppered with small bays and inlets, including the spectacular bays and beaches at the west end of the island. The largest bays are located along the central-east and east end of the island, where you'll find the capital and major port of Willemstad. Most of Curaçao's 150,000 residents live in and around this historic town.

The long north coast of the island, buffeted by constant northeast trade winds, is characterized by a rough coastline, limestone cliff formations set on top of volcanic rock, and weather-beaten terrain. It is generally less inhabited than the south coast, but you will find smaller villages and many of the island's famous old plantation houses here.

Page 6

The west end of the island is also characterized by expansive, hilly terrain, most of it encompassed by Christoffel National Park. The 4,500-acre park contains Mt. Christoffel, at 1,240 feet the highest elevation on Curaçao. The east end of the island comprises flat and mostly barren land with few settlements and some secondary roads weaving to and from its coastal inlets.

Did you know that the east point area of Curaçao covers about 13 % of the island, Its privately owned and inaccessible over land?

History The history of Curaçao begins with Amerindian Arawaks. The Arawaks migrated from South America some 6,000 years ago, settling on various islands they discovered as they embarked on a centuries-long northward trek. The group that ended up in Curaçao were the Caiquetios, who gave the island its name. The island of Curaçao was discovered by the Spanish in 1499 by Alonso de Ojeda, one of Christopher Columbus’ lieutenants. The island remained Spanish until the Dutch conquest of 1634.

Page 7

Peter Stuyvesant was installed as governor in 1642, and he soon established plantations on the island. The famous plantation houses still can be seen today. The plantations foundered in various forms of agriculture, but some were successful in growing peanuts, maize, and fruits. They soon found their niche in the production of salt, dried from the island's saline ponds. In the 17th century, the Dutch became leaders in the international slave trade. Africans were enslaved from their homeland and transported to Curaçao, where they were sold to wealthy plantation owners from across the Americas. Also during this time, Jewish families from Amsterdam established settlements on Curaçao. They attracted others from Europe and South America, fleeing from the remnants of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions.

By the early 18th century, the Jewish population in Curaçao had reached 2,000. In 1732, the community established the Mikve Israel Emanuel Synagogue in Willemstad, a structure that stands today. It is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere still in use. From the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century, there was a good deal of trading places between the British and the Dutch, with the French also trying to take over the island. In 1815, the Dutch regained control of Curaçao, which had been in British hands since 1807. Soon after the Dutch retook the island, it languished for a century. Slavery disappeared, and social and Did you know that the economic conditions were harsh. In 1920, oil was discovered off the Venezuelan coast. This signaled a new era for Curaçao, and for its sister island in the ABCs, Aruba. The two islands became centers for distilling crude oil imported from

allies would not have won WWII without the oil from the Curaçao refinery?

Page 8

Venezuela, and Curaçao's Royal Dutch Shell Refinery became the island's biggest business and employer. Immigrants headed for Curaçao, many from other Caribbean nations, South America, and as far away as Asia. During WW II, the Allies judged Curaçao and its refinery to be important enough and strategic enough, to establish an American military base at the Waterfort Arches, near Willemstad. The large influx of worldwide immigrants turned the island into the multicultural melting pot. The “colonial” status of Curaçao and the other islands of the Dutch Antilles changed in 1954, when the islands became completely self-governing within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Flora and Fauna If there's one word that describes Curaçao's most prevalent plant, it's cactus, and the island hosts hundreds of species. The towering Kadushi Cactus is more like a multi-trunk tree with thousands of needles. The Yatu Cactus is often used to make fences. The prickly Pear Cactus, Turk's Cap, and many others, some as small as a pebble, are prevalent all over the island. Acacia bushes, scraggly trees with small green leaves and long, hard thorns, are also numerous, as is aloe vera, with its pale green, waxy leaves. The island is subtropical and as such has not supported the numerous tropical species of mammals, birds, and lizards most often associated with rainforests. Birders will not be disappointed by the dozens of species of hummingbirds, bananaquits, orioles, and the larger terns, herons, and egrets.

Did you know these cute little birds are called Sugar Thieves?

The trupial, a black bird with a bright orange underbelly and white swatches on its wings, is common to Curaçao.

Page 9

The mockingbird, called chuchubi in Papiamentu, resembles the North American mockingbird, with a long white-gray tail and a gray back. Near the shore, note the big-billed brown pelicans that dive, straight down like dead weight, into the ocean after fish.

Did you know that flamingos make their homes near ponds or in coastal areas on Curaรงao?

Curaรงao's most notable animal is the white-tailed deer. It is a protected species since 1926, and an estimated 200 live on Curaรงao. Most of them can be seen at the Christoffel Park, where about 70% of them resides. You'll also find several species of iguana, light green in color with shimmering shades of aqua along the belly and sides, lounging in the sun here and there.

Along the west end of the island's north shore are several inlets that have become home to breeding sea turtles. These turtles are protected by the park system in Shete Boka Park, and you can visit the moms-to-be in the mornings, accompanied by park rangers.

Willemstad Picture an Amsterdam street, with narrow buildings along a canal. Now redecorate in rainbow colors, and you have an idea of what Curaรงao's like.

Willemstad, capital of Curaรงao, is a fascinating town with centuries of history, first class photo ops, and a charmingly odd pontoon footbridge that hinges open to let boats through. Willemstad is place where you're comfortable wandering around on your own for shopping and sightseeing.

Did you know that Willemstad is one of the six World Heritage Sites in the Caribbean?

The Saint Anna Bay runs through the heart of Willemstad. This narrow span belies its natural depth, which is sufficient to allow even cruise ships to berth directly in town.

Downtown Willemstad has two central districts on either bank of the bay. Punda is the name given to the eastern side, noted for its Dutch colonial architecture that lines the front street, Handelskade.

Sponsored by: www.villaseashell.com

Page 14

This is the oldest part of town and was the original Dutch settlement where ship merchants built structures that served a dual purpose, with shop and warehouse on the ground floor and residence above. Shaded porches and galleries offered protection from the sun, and ample windows on all stories cooled interiors with cross breezes from the trade winds. Tile floors were also designed to cool rooms off. The western side of town is called Otrobanda and is marked by the historic Rif

Did you know that Otrobanda means “other side in Papiamentu? Fort. Built to protect the mouth of the bay, the fort was run by the U.S. Army during World War II. Nazi submarines were kept out by a large chain-link net that was drawn across the harbor. Now the thick stonewalls of the fort create a unique architectural ambience for a complex that houses a variety of high-end retail shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

It's a lovely walk through the complex, beginning at the fort's historic entrance, and ending at the posh Renaissance Curaçao Resort and Casino.

Sponsored by: www.villaseashell.com

Page 15

What to See On Otrobanda the architecture is more reflective of a later stage of development and has a stronger Spanish influence. As it was a repository for all types not desirable in Punda, it is more of a jumbled mix of architectural and cultural styles, with narrow streets and winding alleys. The low profile of many buildings was intended to afford a view of the harbor in the event of an attack. Some of this architectural "nonstyle" can be observed in the labyrinth that makes up the historic Hotel Kurá Hulanda (which translates to "Holland Yard" in Papiamentu) complex.

After the Queen Emma Bridge was built in 1888, wealthy merchants bought up cheap land on the Otrobanda side and built up lavish mansions. Once in disrepair, many of these historic homes have been preserved and restored in recent years.

Did you know that the Queen Emma Bridge is called “the swinging lady” by the locals?

The statue of Pedro Luis Brion dominates the square known as Brionplein, at the Otrobanda end of the pontoon bridge.

Page 16

Born in Curaçao in 1782, Brion became the island's favorite son and best-known war hero. Under Simón Bolívar, he was an admiral and fought for the independence of Venezuela and Colombia. Fort Amsterdam, site of the Governor's Palace and the 1769 Dutch Reformed Church, guards the waterfront. The church still has a British cannonball embedded in it, and the arches leading to the fort were tunneled under the official residence of the governor.

Did you know that a few hundred years the Dutch governor announced that the color white, under the blazing tropical sun, gave him migraines? He passed an ordinance that buildings on Curaçao had to be a color other than white. It was only years later that it was revealed that this particular governor owned the paint factory in Holland that supplied the island.

Page 17

A few minutes' walk from the pontoon bridge, at the north end of Handelskade, the Floating Market features scores of schooners tied up alongside the canal. Boats arrive here from Venezuela and Colombia, and from other West Indian islands, to sell tropical fruits and vegetables, as well as handicrafts. Near Fort Amsterdam, at the corner of Columbusstraat and Hanchi di Snoa, the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue dates from 1732 and is the New World's oldest Jewish congregation. Next door, the Jewish Cultural Historical Museum (see Museums) occupies two buildings dating from 1728. Museum Kurรก Hulanda, at the pontoon bridge on the Otrabanda side is one of the most unusual and largest museums in the Caribbean (see Museums). You can walk the distance inland or take a short cab ride from the Queen Emma Bridge to the sleepy Curaรงao Museum. The Maritime Museum, in the historic Scharloo district, just off the old harbor of Saint Anna Bay, boasts 40 permanent displays that trace Curaรงao's history.

Did you know that the Queen Emma pontoon bridge was built in the 19th century by the then-American consul?

Sight Seeing Fort Amsterdam The city of Willemstad dates from the Dutch capture of Curaรงao by victory over the Spanish in 1634. While the Spaniards had been content to erect simple stone dwellings, the Dutch began to fortify the island. One of the first permanent constructions was Fort Amsterdam which guards the entrance to St. Anna Bay, and became the focal point for the development of the city

Did you know that today, Fort Amsterdam serves as the seat of the Government of Curaรงao?

Fort Beekenburg Fort Beekenburg was built in 1703 to defend Spanish Water. At the time it was one of the few places where you could get onto land from sea. This fort has earned his stripes. Multiple times it had fended off the English or pirates. The fort was build with stones factored in the Waalgebied (Dutch area). These stones came from ships where they were used as ballast.

Plantation House Ascencion This plantation house is one of the oldest plantation houses which is owned by the Dutch marines as a recreation centre. On the first Sunday of each month there is an open house which starts with a church service. A tour of the property is given, and there is local music as well as a folkloric show. At the shop one can buy souvenirs, books, handicrafts and postcards.

Plantation House Santa Martha Plantation house Santa Martha (one of the few plantation houses build in a Ushape) is undoubtedly worth a visit. The plantation house serves as a care institution for people with a physical or mental disability, there products are sold in the local shop.

Did you know that Santa Martha is one of the oldest and largest villas on Curaรงao, built at the end of the 17th century?

Page 20

Museums Kurรก Hulanda Museum Housed in once-dilapidated 19th-century buildings, the exhibits here reflect the passion of Jacob Gelt Dekker. After making his fortune when he was young, Dekker quickly built up an astounding collection of prehistoric, historic, and cultural artifacts from the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

Did you know that museum Kurรก Hulanda is one of the most unusual and largest museums in the Caribbean?

His collection includes a life-size reconstruction of the interior of a slave ship that once sailed from the Ivory Coast, fossils, wood masks, fertility dolls, stone sculptures, and musical instruments. The guided tour is engrossing as the dismal history of slave trading on the island comes into focus. Curaรงao served as a notorious port for the Dutch slave trade, and slaves were trained for up to 2 years there before being sold at a profit. Actual and re-created slave quarters house scores of rusted shackles, chains, and other forms of restraint, and the white KKK hoods and cloaks are easily as disturbing as the specters they resemble.

Museum Savonet Established in the former plantation house of the Savonet Plantation. It gives visitors a peek into the lives of the former inhabitants of the area, full of inside information and views. From the first Arowak Indians who came to the island almost 4000 years ago up to modern times.

Did you know that museum Savonet is Curaçao’s newest museum, located in the heart of the Christoffel National Park?

Modern audio- visual concepts, historical artifacts, faces of descendents of the former slaves, photography, completely restored antiques and much more give the museum the tools to tell a diverse story of interdependence between humans and nature, cultural history and natural history. Website: www.savonetmuseum.org Curaçao Museum The museum shows visitors a view of the past and exhibits contemporary local and international art. The collection exists of paintings, etches, drawings, statues, furniture, glass and textile. There are two period rooms; a living room and a bedroom, which are furnished with mainly 19th century mahogany wooden furniture. There is also a traditional Curaçao kitchen. Website: www.thecuracaomuseum.com Maritime Museum Curaçao It is located in a mansion built in 1729 on the Waaigat inlet, just above the Floating Market. Renovations were done in maritime style complete with a gangplank, portholes and ship railings, all in wood and brass. Video presentations and multimedia displays are used throughout the museum to bring Curaçao's maritime history to life. Exhibits include antique miniatures, 17th Century ship models, and maps --some dating from the 1500's. The Museum has its own ferry for tours of the harbor. They are one of Curaçao's most popular tourism attractions. Website: www.snoa.com Fort Church Museum This museum is located at the back of the historic Fort Church (1769) at Fort Amsterdam (1635), near the Punda waterfront. It contains a small but elegant collection of artifacts from the church's Dutch Protestant congregation, active since 1635, including antique silver chalices and a mahogany baptismal font. History buffs will also enjoy the impressive collection of old maps of the island. National Archaeological Anthropological Museum The National Museum greatly benefits from the results of more than 30 years of research on all the Islands of the Netherlands Antilles. Collections under the management of the National Museum include numerous (pre-Columbian) archaeological artifacts as well as ethnographic objects from the late 19th century to the present. A major part of the collection was brought together by professional researchers and scholars, many an aficionado of our cultural heritage has also entrusted the National Museum with fine pieces that relate to our history. Beaches Curaรงao's beaches are its best-kept secret. The beaches are not the long patches of sand found on other islands, but rather smaller, more intimate beaches found in secluded inlets. The nicest beaches are found at the west side of the island. The island claims to have 38 beaches in all, yet you'll certainly find more along the secluded and rough coastlines of the eastern and northern coasts.

Did you know that the island claims to have 38 beaches in, yet you'll certainly find more along the secluded and rough coastlines of the northern coasts.

Playa Kalki Sandy beach with limestone cliffs. This is surely one of the most attractive snorkeling and diving spots on Curaรงao. Kalki means limestone in Papiamentu and refers to the limestone cliffs. At the corals you will find a sculptured fist with a label carrying the name of the coral. The trees and quiet surroundings ensure a pleasant atmosphere. This small inlet lies in Westpunt, right near Kura Hulanda Lodge.

Westpunt beach This is where the day's catch is brought to land. A sight seer's beach, Westpunt is not ideal for a day of sunbathing or swimming. Don't forget your shoes or sandals or you will be punished! Its pebbly surface won't allow you to go barefoot. Knip Beach - Playa Kenepa Grandi Knip Beach is very popular with the locals. Knip Beach lets you swim and sunbathe in one of the most beautiful surroundings on Curaรงao. For the well trained swimmers, the reef can be reached from the beach, but it is quite a long swim. Snorkeling can be done much closer to the shore near the rocks on either side of Knip Beach. Little Knip - Playa Kenepa Chiki Blend in with the local population at this beautiful but small beach. This is where you will find local families spend the whole day playing, swimming and even have their barbecue. See the Virtual View to get the feel of the place. It won't be this quiet when you visit Little Knip Beach in the weekend, though! Playa Jeremi Visit this narrow, picturesque cove late in the day, perhaps lingering to watch the sun set, when you can fully appreciate the exceptionally clear waters without minding the lack of shade. There are no amenities.

Playa Lagun Between Santa Cruz and Jeremi lies Playa Lagun, very popular by locals. Everybody knows their place and they all look out for each other. Most of the time you can see turtles at Lagun so always take your snorkeling gear. Fishermen dock their boats at the beach and go out fishing during the week. Upon return in the afternoon, the catch of the day is sold right on the beach.

Did you know that the best time to see turtles at Playa Lagun is around 4 PM? This is when the fishermen return and feed the leftovers to the turtles.

School kids receive swimming lessons in the waters of Playa Lagun. On Tuesdays there is Yoga class in the morning and on most days you can get a massage at the beach.

Like most beaches on the island, weekdays are a lot more tranquil than weekends. Playa Lagun is no different. On weekends tourists and locals flood to the beach to cool off from the week. The benefit of the weekend is that you get to experience true Curacao culture.

Boca Santa Cruz – The beach of Captain Goodlife A beach which locals loves to visit in the weekends. You will definitely encounter Captain Goodlife. A legend on Curaçao. Many famous people have come to pay him a visit. Though it has become a little bit commercialized and now even has a restaurant, the water tours with Captain

Curaçao Underwater While so many diving & snorkeling destinations require boat trips out to barrier reefs, almost all of the diving & snorkeling on Curaçao is easily accessed from beaches. And, there are plenty of beautiful sandy beaches to choose from. Curaçao offers spectacular underwater treasures when it comes to marine environments, with healthy reefs and good visibility. Stretching along 20km (12 miles) of Curaçao's southern coastline, the Curaçao Underwater Park features steep walls, shallow wrecks, gardens of soft coral, and more than 30 species of hard coral.

Did you know that while so many diving & snorkeling destinations require boat trips out to barrier reefs, almost all of the diving & snorkeling on Curaçao is easily accessed from beaches? And, there are plenty of beautiful sandy beaches to choose from!

Diving Enjoy more than 60 dive sites, underwater visibility to 100 feet, mild currents, lush coral gardens, and wall, wreck, and shore dive options. No wonder Curaçao is ranked among the world’s best diving spots! Many of the best diving spots are within swimming distance from shore. Tour companies and dive shops offer all-inclusive dive packages, so all you need is your certification.

The two most spectacular dive sites are the Mushroom Forest and Sponge Forest where oversize coral heads and sponges abound. Two good wreck dives are the Superior Producer, a sunken vessel near Willemstad Harbor, and the tugboat near Caracas Bay. Dramatic vertical drops abound and can be explored at Knipbaai and Blauwbaai. Snorkeling There are some great snorkeling opportunities in Curaçao, where you will encounter many fish and find some healthy coral reefs. The shoreline access in Curacao is very easy with sandy beaches. The vast majority of the beach snorkeling on Curaçao is in ideal depths for snorkelers. Very often you will be snorkeling alongside limestone and fossilized coral cliffs, exploring the sea life that grows on the sides. The sea floor does not often get much deeper than 20 feet close to shore. Despite all the sandy beaches, most Curaçao snorkeling is in crystal clear water.

Did you know that sea life tends to be better at the left side of a bay?

At most locations if you stick to the left side of the bay you will find good underwater visibility. This is because the wind and wave direction is normally from left to right, so sand from the beach clouds the visibility on the right.

For the same reason, sea life tends to be better on the left side of the bays because when the wind kicks up it normally pounds the right side of the bays, doing damage to the corals. Curacao is close to the equator, and the water stays very warm. Generally, from December through March, the water temperatures are just below 80°F, and they can get as high as 84°F from April to November.

Page 33

If you check out the snorkel map you will see that all the spots are on the southwest to northwest shore of the island. There are essentially no beaches on the opposite shore and no snorkel spots. The east shore takes the brunt of the trade winds and waves and the shoreline is full of bluffs and cliffs.

Did you know you should not consider getting in the water on the windward side of the island? ?

The trade winds in Curacao normally blow from the east. So even when the winds are blowing strongly you can expect to find lots of calm snorkeling spots. Because of this you can commonly get in more snorkeling during a trip compared to islands that are more exposed to the winds and weather. You still have to be careful though; wind conditions can change and even switch directions.

Some Favorite Curaçao Snorkeling Spots are: 

Tugboat - Likely the most visited and well-known snorkel location on Curaçao, Tugboat is wonderful. If you book a snorkeling boat tour, this is where they will probably take you. But you need not pay to access this great spot unless you love a boat trip, because it's accessible by car.

Little Knip Beach - If you are looking for a gorgeous west end Curaçao beach with great snorkeling, look no further. You will swim with fish and explore live coral reef. And you could be lucky enough to see a large school of squid or catch a glimpse of an octopus hiding in a hole, like we did.

Klein Curaçao - Some of the best snorkeling available from Curaçao is on this small island. Klein Curaçao lies six miles southeast of the main island. Of course you must take a boat to the island, but it makes for a great day to a beautiful destination.

Did you know that the tugboat is a well preserved wreck sitting upright with some corals and sponges growing on it and fish swimming around it?

There are two starting points for climbing Christoffel. When taking the first at the visitor center, you will also pass the second at the parking-place near the foot of the hill. The latter can also be reached by car by taking a shortcut, called the route of the mountaineers. At a slow pace it will take you about half an hour to reach the parking-place on foot. From there you'll need another hour to reach the summit. Back and forth will take about three hours. Start as early as possible to avoid the heat. Bring enough water and make sure you wear decent walking shoes.

Curaçao Seaquarium The Curaçao Sea Aquarium is possibly Curaçao's most popular tourist attraction. Website: www.curacao-seaaquarium.com Dolphin Academy At the Dolphin Academy Curaçao visitors get the opportunity to meet dolphins and swim, snorkel or even dive with these special animals in 6 different programs. There are suiting programs for everybody!

Did you know that the Dolphins used in Seaquarium’s programs were captured from the wild as a result of loop-holes in protection of wild species from international trade? This is something you may not hear at Seaquarium. Dolphins are often captured through inhumane methods and transported great distances to marine parks throughout the world. Seaquarium has been allowed to display wild-caught dolphins on the promise that it is conducting legitimate research on dolphin ecology that will ultimately contribute to their conservation. The problem is that little research has been carried out to date. Log on to www.wdcs.org to learn more. For a first meeting there is the Dolphin Encounter, a program for all ages. In this program visitors get to know the dolphin up close and personal while they are standing on a platform in the water about waist deep.

Nightlife and Entertainment What's your fancy? Dancing, jazz, island music, tropical libations, or maybe Karaoke? Pick up a copy of the weekly dining and entertainment guide K-Pasa at any tourism office or hotel lobby, or log on to www.kpasa.com to find out what's happening where.

Did you know that the islands night life works on a timeshare

system? Each club has its unofficial “night when crowds gather under its roof and fun lasts long into the early morning hours.

Because the island is densely populated with a happy, social bunch of locals, the nightlife scene is geared for the residents as well as the tourists. The hot spots move around like shifting dunes, and the locals all have their fingers on the pulse of each evening's beat. One of the island's best and most memorable venues is Blues, a restaurant and bar in the Avila Beach Hotel, Penstraat 130 (+5999) 4614377. Perched over the water, this tiny tree house of a bar is packed every night except Monday, when it is closed. Live jazz plays Thursday from 7 to 11pm and Saturday from 8 to 11pm. Mambo Beach, at the Seaquarium Beach features food, music, and a great beach bar that, on Tuesday nights, shows classic movies under the stars a mere stone's throw from the water. Sunday night is salsa night, and the place is usually packed. While the revelry can be heard and seen from the far end of the Breezes resort, it's a good walk or a short cab ride to this perennial hot spot.

Another longtime favorite, especially for happy hour, is Pirate’s Bay (tel. (+5999) 4626575; http://piratebayCuraçao.com, on the beach of the same name at Piscaderabaai z/n. Asia de Cuba, Zuikertuintjeweg z/n (+5999) 7479009, has live Cuban music and a Pan-Asian decor and cuisine. Grab a mojito and belly up to a high-top table near the dance floor to watch the locals as they show off Latin moves so good you'll think you're in old Havana. The Sopranos Piano Bar, in Renaissance Rif Fort Mall (+5999) 5670007; www.sopranospianobar.com, has nightly dancing, cocktails, and live music. The bar is open from noon to 3am (or later). You'll find plenty of gaming action in the island's casinos. The fun usually starts at 2pm, and some places stay open until 4am.

About Us Nothing is more rewarding than hosting families for their vacation of a lifetime. It is fantastic to see how our guests feel quickly at home and appreciate the attention we put into everything here. We are very often graced with fun and dynamic guests that make hosting Villa Seashell a great new experience each day. Our family of four lives in Aruba. Your contact, Linda Lou, works as an artesian making beautiful jewelry and wall decorations from the treasures of the ocean. As the name implies, a lot of Linda Lou’s art can be found back at Villa Seashell. We enjoy renting vacation homes ourselves. Our favorite destinations are the United States, Italy, and France. We’re avid snorkelers and mountain bikers.

Did you know that Curaçao is much more diverse than Aruba, and therefore much nicer for a vacation?

Why we choose Villa Seashell Our family has always loved the tropics. We would travel the Caribbean to escape the cold Dutch winters. We felt in love Curacao; it has the best of both worlds, Caribbean with a Dutch flavor. The beautiful, warm friendly people enticed us to make this place our home. We found this unique oceanfront villa with its breathtaking panoramic views 5 years ago and completely rebuilt it to make it our home. Besides going to one of the beautiful beaches, we like to venture out into the countryside and explore the rolling hills topped by plantation houses built more than 3 centuries ago, or visit the North coast with its raw beauty. On the Northern side of the island the rough sea water has been smashing against the rocky coastline for centuries and has built caves and little inlets into the rock. It is great to walk over the massive volcanic rocks and observe the wild live, listen to the wind, and climb down into the caves to observe the waves clashing against it walls. We also like to visit Willemstad, which is only a 20 minutes drive. It has attractive stores, exquisite restaurants and a rich architecture that tells a tale of its history.

Did you know that we really like to explore the island by kayak?

The Unique Benefits of Villa Seashell Our villa is not the typical vacation rental. It used to be our primary home, filled with high quality furniture, luxurious amenities and architectural details. The location of the Villa is very unique; anyone going there just falls in love with it. The views of the ocean are breathtaking at all times of the year. Star filled nights or a full moon shining across the ocean and lighting the pool for a night swim make this place a unique vacation spot.

The place we like best at Villa Seashell is the very large gazebo at the border of the ocean, with its 10 persons lounge set, hammocks and dining table; and the wooden deck above the ocean where you can catch your own fish and enjoy the sunset.
