The collected goods in 18 truck loads went for sale at the Ammani Ammal Girls

Higher Secondary School at R.S. Puram, Coimbatore. The array of goods were displayed in over 24 stalls at the venue. Furniture pieces and electronic goods were the chief attraction. A 1995 model of 118NE fiat car and half a dozen two wheelers were also for sale. Some priceless items stood for sale at unbelievably low prices. Coimbatoreans were well aware what was in store at the venue for them and

queued up as early as 10 pm previous night and by 9 am there were more than 1000 people in the queue. Families were there with all their members; even carrying three month old babies. At the stroke of 9 am, when the doors opened, people simply sprinted towards the furniture & electrical goods enclosure. Geysers, washing machines, fridges and sofasets were sold out in minutes. Amongst the triumphed

smiled of buyers were the volunteers from the trust, who had tirelessly worked for the last two months. Help came from every walk of life and the volunteers belonged to the age group of 17- 74. A sizeable chunk was the students from NSS & NCC from colleges of Coimbatore. The drops of sweat that they shed have become nearly a million rupees. This million will now go to save lives

I was diagnosed have diabetes last week with fasting blood sugar of 184 mgs/dl and postprandial blood sugar of 326 mgs/dl. I have started taking anti diabetic medications. Now, often I have giddiness, sweating and increased hunger. What should I do? This condition is known as Hypoglycemia – Low blood sugar level (when the blood sugar level is less than 70 mgs/dl). Hypoglycemia is one of the dangerous conditions in diabetes management. It is characterised by increased hunger, increased sweating, palpitation, giddiness, tremor and drowsiness. Some times hypoglycemia can cause loss of consciousness and even death. Hypoglycemia can be immediately corrected by taking some sweets or table sugar. If the patient loses his consciousness, he may need intravenous infusion of glucose. Whenever symptoms of hypoglycemia are felt, the patient should immediately take some sweets, so that it will resolve spontaneously. Further, seek medical advice for further management of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia occurs due to improper diet intake (not taking food at regular timings), excessive dosage of anti-diabetic medications, diabetic kidney damage and other endocrine problems like hypothyroidsm. It is always advisable to follow regular diet at regular timings along with regular medicines to avoid fluctuations in sugar levels and avoid complications. A: My sister Manimegalai was learning dance from Mrs.Chamundeswari, a f o l l o w e r o f K.N.Dhandayuthapani style. I used to just watch and pick up the nuances of the art from her classes. Q: About your initial performances …… A: I have performed many recitals with my sister. My involvement in the dance developed gradually. So far, I have performed more than 1200 times. Out of that 17 dance ballets were choreographed by me. Q: How you start your teaching career? A: My guru handed over her dance school to me when I was 17. She then moved to London. Later, I named the institution Nruthya Kshetra. Q: What makes you compose new items? A : I have performed many traditional varnams. Then once when I wanted to perform new one, I could not get new varnam. A strong feeling came to my mind and I sat before Ambigai and prayed. I would say that she made me compose my first varnam “Simhavaahini Raja Rajeswari” at the age of 20 years. After that, I made 600 compositions all for dance. Of them, 126 are varnams.

Q: What is your view on different dance styles now adopted in Bharathnatyam it self? A. Actually, there are no different styles. Styles have been named by the G u r u ` s n a m e . Bharathanatyam is unique. It should be performed in its unique style by all the performers. It should be propagated at universal level. Western dances got the identity because they preserved its uniqueness. The dance form should be devoid of any ego of the

the audience. Q.What about your family? A: I married Chitra in 1993, who is the disciple of Smt.Ranganayaki Jayaraman. She takes complete responsibility in all my activities including my dance ballets, besides teaching. Kavya and Krishna are our children. K a v y a i s a bharathanatyam performer. Q: On your future productions? A: I propose to perform a

individual dancer or teacher so that all the dancers feel the same about it and the uniqueness is maintained. Unity is required to take bharathanatyam to the universal level. Q: In your view, who stands for creativity? A: None other than Dr.Padma Subramaniam Q: What will be your message to upcoming artists? A: Involvement. A dancer has to protection the Indian culture and heritage and remain away from the influence of western culture. A dance has the responsibility to convey social message. If social concepts are conveyed through dramatic presentations, it will reach

dance drama in the month of November on Hindu Mythology at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan. Q: What about your schools? A: In Chennai, I run my dance school in the name of Nruthya Kshetra at Anna N a g a r a n d Purushawalkkam. My schools are there in Canada, USA and New Zealand. My students take care of them.
