Know your diabetes

I am a diabetic for the past ten years and I am taking medicines regularly. Shall I do fasting blood test alone as part of the regular checkup? No. Both fasting and postprandial blood sugar values are important as each one signifies the status of diabetes in its own way. Fasting blood sugar denotes the basal insulin secretion during the night time and sugar release from the liver during the night. Postprandial blood sugar denotes immediate insulin release (first phase insulin secretion) and insulin action in muscles and fat (insulin sensitivity). We have specific drugs and newer designer insulin's to address these abnormalities. To get HbA1c less than 7%, we have to target both fasting and postprandial blood sugar values well within target ranges. One has to do both fasting blood sugar and postprandial blood sugar to know the status of diabetes and to avoid complications. Who are the persons at risk of diabetes and who are the persons should undergo glucose tolerance test? The following are the risk group for developing diabetes 1. All individuals above the age of 40 years with high ethnicity of diabetes (Asians) 2. Obese persons - Individuals with a BMI equal to or more than 25 kg/m2 3. Have a first-degree relative with diabetes 4. Physically inactive persons – stressful persons 5. Have delivered a baby weighing more than 4Kg or have been diagnosed as having diabetes during pregnancy. 6. Hypertensive individuals (equal to or more than 140/90 mm of Hg) 7. Have an HDL cholesterol level less than 35 mg/dl 8. Have a triglyceride level more than 250 mg/dl 9. Have PCOS (Poly cystic ovary syndrome) 10. On previous testing, had IGT or IFG – prediabetes 11. Spiritual celebrations

Yoga for wellness

A chat with Yogacharya Arunkumar, the founder of the Infinite Dimension Charitable Trust, whose objective is to eliminate all trace of suffering from this planet and help people achieve physical, mental, emotional, intellectual and spiritual well-being. He conducts several w o r k s h o p s o n Yo g a , Meditation, Pranayama, Pranic healing, Crystal healing, Reiki and many other types of healing. What were the beginnings of your interest in the ancient art of yogasana? I'm from Orissa. After c o m p l e t i n g m y engineering, I got an opportunity to go abroad. However, I decided to take a yoga vacation at Shivananda Ashramam at Kerala. I fell in love with yoga and decided to stay. My guru was Swami Vishnudevananda. I stayed in Kerala for three years learning and teaching yogasanas, after which I came to Chennai. I used to train several cricketers in yoga. I joined the Apollo group of hospitals in 1996 as stress management ounselor. In 2002, I started 'Infinite Dimension', with an aim to reach out to the poorest of the poor. What are all the places in India you've conducted the workshops? We've conducted workshops in several places all over the countryDelhi, Bangalore, Mumbai,

Hyderabad to mention a few. In Tamil Nadu, we have conducted workshops in Chennai, C o i m b a t o r e , Ve l l o r e , Ambur, Kanchipuram and some surrounding villages. We also go to schools and colleges and teach children yoga so that they are better prepared to face difficulties. Do you have a specific teaching methodology? Poornathvam yoga is yoga for complete well-being. We don't just teach people asanas and other techniques, we also give them the scientific reasoning behind it. That makes them more aware and helps them realize, why it is so important to practice yoga. Tell us something about your latest venture? Organic farming is a new project that we have taken up. Although people might practice yoga and good breathing techniques, their health is ruined by the intake of chemicals in almost everything they eat. We encourage farmers to go the organic way and also provide them with pyramids, crystals etc. to ensure better plant yields. We operate a research centre in Thindivanam for this. Yoga can prevent the onset of health problems. But, how about treatment and cure? People suffer from illnesses when the body's balance is disrupted. Yoga

can definitely help reverse this. Of course, the severity of the problem also plays a role in determining how much can be done. In the early stages of most diseases, a cure can definitely be achieved. If it is an advanced stage, the person's suffering can be reduced. It can make the person peaceful and relaxed. Mind over body – that is what yoga is all about. Positive thoughts have a positive impact. Yoga helps people think positively. Specific asanas and breathing techniques are also available to target certain problems. For breathing-related problems like asthma, yoga is the ultimate solution. In the case of cardiac problems, we have seen that yoga reduce blocks in arteries. What would you consider as the happiest moment as a yogacharya? Every moment of mine in the company of yoga is a happy one for me. One of the most memorable ones, I would say was the first yoga class I taught in Kerala. I was teaching people and that was really helping them. Once a couple came back to me and said that I had made a difference in their lives. That happy moment still lingers in my mind.
