Know your diabetes

My father is diabetic for 12 years. I did Glucose Tolerance Test last week and I was informed that I am having borderline diabetes. Should I take any medicines now and what precautions should I follow? Borderline diabetes is known as pre-diabetes (either impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance). Most of the pre-diabetes patients do not require any medications, and blood sugar level can be well controlled by diet plan and daily exercise. However, the patients should require regular followup blood tests once in three months depending on the blood sugar values. On regular follow-up, it has been found that one third of patients revert back to normal, one third to diabetes and the balance stays in prediabetes stage. Since the pre-diabetes is a strong risk factor for heart disease, some obese pre-diabetes with strong family history of heart disease will require medications in pre-diabetes stage itself.

Savour the taste of Punjab

I am 60 years old male and having diabetes for 4 years. I am on regular medication. My blood sugar level in fasting is 106 mg/dl. My problem is frequent urination. Is it due to diabetes? Since your blood sugar value in fasting is in reasonable control, diabetes may not be the cause for increased urination. But you need to check your postprandial blood sugar and HbA1c to rule out diabetes as the causative agent. Other than diabetes, urinary tract infection and prostate hypertrophy are the common causes for frequent urination in your age group. Prostate is a gland present in the urinary pathway of males. As age advances, the prostate gland become swollen and get infected frequently causing urinary symptoms like frequent urination, slowness in urinary flow and difficulty in urination.
