Gangavatharam in kuchipudi style

Narthanasala director Sathyapriya Ramana`s Gangavatharanam was in complete kuchipudi style involving grace, typical f o o t w o r k a n d dramatisation. The theme dealt with river Ganga - its greatness, glory and importance. P r o f . C . M . K . R e d d y, playback singer Ravu Balasaraswathi Devi and M.S.Murthy graced the occasion as guests of honour and felicitated

Sathyapriya. The programme highlighted the importance of Ganga in the minds of the audience. Patnayak Sangeetha Rao has taken charge of music composition. N.S.Prakash Rao and Akshaya gave vocal support. Instrumental support were given by Raadha (veena), Ramana (flute), M.S.Rao (violin) and Ganesh (mrudangam). In the dance-drama, Madhurima played the role

of Ganga, Nagapooja as Lord Siva, Nivedita as Bagheeratha, Keerthana as Brahma, Vedantham Ramu as Himavanthu, Sreya as Mena devi, Anoosha as Bali, Rajesh as Va m a n a s w a r o o p a , Pavithra as Vamana, Akhila as Sukracharya, Harshini as Vishnu and G n a n e s w a r i a s Nandeeswar. About 21 dancers proved themselves and mesmerised the audience.

A variety fare in guitar

Prapancham Sailendran, son of eminent fluatist Prapancham Ravindran presented a guitar concert at Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Matam, West Mambalam as part of the Music Festival conducted by Vadapalani Times. The novelty of doing a Carnatic concert on guitar itself brought a lot of expectation in the minds of audience. The first item, mohana raga varnam itself proved different as it was presented in three beats, and the improvisation factor made a good impact. He justified the

composition of Ramanathapuram S r i n i v a s I y y e n g a r. G a j a v a d a n a , a composition of Papanasam Sivan in sreeranjani ragam started off the traverse in the traditional path. Brova Bharama , Thyagaraja`s composition was presented after a bahudari raga alapana with swara prakriya. The hereditary style and training were well noticeable in it. Prapancham Ravindran`s composition, Unnai Nambinen Murugane was the main piece of the evening. A detailed

alapana in shanmugapriya raga showed his mettle and reflected his father's training. T h y a g a r a j a ` s Samajavaragamana in hindolam was melodious. Purandharadasar`s Venkatachala nilayam in sindhubhairavi and Bharathiar`s Chinnanchiru kiliye in ragamalika were the thukada items. He is a first year B.Com s t u d e n t i n Va i s h n a v College and he has composed different pieces in western classical. Prapancham Krishna Prasad on keyboard and Master Sreevadhyan Sriram on mrudangam gave full support to the main artiste. The audience were upbeat by the end of the concert as it was a right combination of western instruments and classical percussion and they u n a n i m o u s l y congratulated Vadapalani Times for bringing out such innovative programmes in the neighbourhood.

Violin duet concert Sri Sadguru Gana Nilayam Bakula Panchami Innisai Kutchery will be held on June 12, 6.30 pm at Sri Thyagaraja Hall, SMR

Matriculation School, Jothiramalingam Street, West Mambalam. There will be a violin duet by Vital Ramamoorthy and

Padmashankar. They will be accompanied on mridangam by Seithalapthi B Sivaraman and Dr Karthick on ghatam.

Sangeetha Pravachamani Kousalya Sivakumar depicted Surya as the leader of Navagrahas. Aditya Hrudaya was the central theme of her musical discourse at Vani Mahal, organised by Thyagaraja Gana Sabha. She had selected the k e e r t h a n a s o f vageyakkaras like D e e k s h i t h a r , Harikesanallur Muthiaha Baghavathar, Barathiyar, Villiputhur and literature from Silapadhikaram. She conveyed that Surya, son of Kashyap and Adithi was initially called Maarthanda. Surya has 1008 names and is being called with a different name every month. She said that Surya can be seen in the form of Siva, Vishnu and Fire. He gives knowledge in the form of Siva, mukti in the form of Vishnu and wealth in the form of fire and provides health in his original form. She further added that

Surya gives memory power and intellect at the brahma muhurtham, energy at 11am, and satisfaction to pitru devata in the afternoon and health to pregnant women in the evening. Kousalya chanted 30 slokams of Adithya Hrudaya in 10 ragas with chitta swaras, which was the highlight of the evening. She had taken keen interest in selecting the texts and getting information from authentic scholars was evident. Arukkan padam, a composition of Appar, Adityam devadi devam, a composition of HKMB, Gyairu vanakkam, a composition of Bharathiyar and bhajan were rendered in a classical format. She continued that Surya is a guru to Vinayaka and Anjaneya. He had asked Anjaneya to cooperate with Sugreeva in the search for Seetha as gurudakshina. She said that Surya is

considered as Fire god in Persia and Mithra in Rome. Romans consider Surya as Mithra, who rides four horses. Chanting of Suryakavacham is supposed to give good health. There are temples for Surya at Konark (Bhuvaneswar, Orissa) and at Arasavilli , a village in Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh. It is believed that Agasthyar gave the Adithya Hruydaya mantropadesam to Lord Rama during the battle so that Lord Rama could kill Ravana. Hence it is being considered and chanted as a mantra for victory in all aspects. K o u s a l y a w a s accompanied by Nagamani Ramesh, disciple of Late B. Rajam Iyyer on vocal and R.S. Gopalakrishnan, g r a n d s o n o f Ananthakrishnan, on violin and Guru Raghavendra on mrudangam.

When imagination takes wings

Flying has captured the imagination of human beings since ancient times. Though it's possible to fly by an aircraft now, still the urge to fly an object is inborn in us. And it's here that the role of aviators and the concepts of aero-modelling come to fulfill the mind's cravings. And taking it a step further is Aravind, an aviator, instructor, aero-modeler and cinematographer. Vadapalani Times catches up with the ace aeromodeler. When he says that there are teenagers to septuagenarians with him in the pursuit of flying objects using remote, you wonder, but soon get convinced, since we know that our own Maddy (actor Madhavan) and Thala (actor Ajith) are sport for this game and have learnt some of their lessons from Aravind on aeromodelling. Aravind is the founder of Rotor Spirit and Hobby Pvt.Ltd, which supplies everything related to aeromodeling and teaches the enthusiasts, the nuances of flying objects using remotes. Aravind says that he is happy to see a lot of enthusiastic school and college goers showing keen interest in the sport. Elucidating on the benefits, he says, “The hobby keeps you occupied, alerts the motor senses and improves concentration power. It's sheer pleasure to learn the methodology of the system and break the puzzle. It is a kind of meditation”. He recalls that when he realized there was no support for training,

p u r c h a s e a n d maintenance of remote controlled equipments in India, he started on a world tour to learn the art and science of RC modelling. And Aravind is responsible for introducing the first Raptor 30 model in India. He takes extra care in guiding the customer in selecting the model and spare parts. His simple definition of RC helicopter goes like this, “it's like having a bowl of water in hand and trying to balance a wooden ball in it.” “Even a slightest

mistake in operation will destroy the equipment,” he adds. This expert is sure that with just the right attitude one can master the hobby. “If one has some knowledge regarding
