Know your diabetes Award for neighbourhood reporters

I am a diabetic for the past four months. I am taking tablet metformin twice daily after food. My father is also diabetic and he is taking tablets half an hour before food. What is the correct way of taking diabetes medicines? This is a very good question. Most of the diabetes patients have confusion regarding their medications and their intake. Diabetes is a disorder due to the defective insulin secretion from pancreas or defective action of insulin at their receptor or combination of both. Type 2 diabetes patients have a combination of these two defects. We have anti-diabetic medicines to increase insulin secretion and medicines that increase insulin action at their receptors. Anti-diabetic medicines that increase insulin secretion from pancreas have to taken half an hour before taking food because of the time delay in tablet absorption and insulin secretion. The insulin secretion has to be matched with the rise in blood sugar level after food intake. So that the medicines used to increase insulin secretion has to be taken half an hour before food. Medicines that increase insulin action have to be taken after food. Some medicines, which inhibit glucose absorption in the intestine, have to be taken along with food. All the medicines are advocated in exact timings in relation to food so as to get their maximal benefits.
