The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department's eco-tourism wing has planned halfa–dozen trekking tours to Top Slip. With an aim to create awareness among communities and tourists about the eco-tourism spots and prevent the usage of biodegradable products,
TTDC has been taking steps to promote ecotourism activities. After two trekking trips, which received an over-whelming response, TTDC is now all geared to start the third one. The next trip is scheduled for December 24 and 25 to Top Slip, Parambikulam

How to use glucometers? Glucometers are useful devices to identify blood sugar values in seconds. Before using glucometer, wash your hands and completely dry them with a clean towel. It is advisable to test the blood from the left hand fingers, so that it will not pain during our routine activities since we don't often use our left hands. It is better to prick in the left hand middle or ring finger, which is often less used. Wipe over the finger side, with dry cotton, where you want to prick. Load the glucose strip in the glucometer and verify the code every time. And also check for the expiry date of glucose strips. Press your finger tip with other finger in such a way that it collects some pooled blood from the finger tip. Prick the finger's side; not the bulb tip, as bulb tips are more painful due to the presence of more nerve endings. Prick the finger side with sterile needle or sterile needle loaded in plunger. Once the blood drop symbol appears on the glucometers, you can apply blood to the strips. Depending upon the brand of glucometer, either blood has to be applied to the strips before or after loading in the glucometer. We can test blood sugar in glucometers once in two weeks or whenever we had a doubt about glycemic status (both low and high sugar). Nowadays we have glucowatch which monitor blood sugar in every five seconds using inotoporosis.

Award for self-employed disabled persons Nandini Voice for The Deprived, an NGO, honoured self-employed disabled persons on November 29 in a meeting held at Mylapore organised in connection with the World Disabled Day. Tw e n t y t w o d i s a b l e d persons, hailing from different parts of the State, who were involved in different self-employment activities were honoured with cash award, gift and certificate. Five disabled persons from Dindigul, M a d u r a i , P e r a m b a l u r, Villupuram and Chennai who have been working
towards the cause of the disabled persons were also honoured. Swami Gautamananda, president, Sri Ramakrishna Math, distributed the awards in the presence of Gnani, writer and social activist. Carry honoured India's finest chefs and stalwarts from the hospitality industry
at the award ceremony held recently at the Fourth IFCA National Culinary Congress, Hyderabad. The IFCA Humanitarian Award 2007 was presented to Murali, MD of Sri Krishna Sweets. The IFCA Chef of the Year Award 2007 and 2008 went to chef Sheetharam Prasaad and chef Vijaya Baskaran respectively. In all 14 awards were there recognising the efforts made by the chefs.

The Brain Bee Quiz is a live question and answer competition about neuroscience is an attempt to motivate youth to learn about the brain, capture their imagination and inspire them to pursue careers in bio-medical brain research. Campaign on AIDS awareness

Chennai boy wins Helen Keller Award
December 2 has been a special day for a special child, twice over. This year, G J Siddharth is just back from Delhi after receiving the prestigious National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) Helen Keller award from union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal. The award is in recognition of his exemplary work in helping disabled people find
positions of equality and dignity in the workplace. Siddharth is the only person from south India to have received the award this year. On the same day in 2005, Siddharth was picked up from his home in Nandanam and driven to the airport to meet India's First Citizen, the then President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam. The President had earlier responded to Sidharth's
email, saying, “You are indeed a great role model to the able-bodied as well as special children. When I visit Chennai, I will be happy to meet you.” Siddharth's is a story of courage and determination. Immediately after birth, he was infected with jaundice. It was only after four years that Siddharth was diagnosed as suffering from cerebral palsy. Following a year at the Spastics Society of India, Bangalore, Siddharth was admitted to the Spastics Society of India, Madras (now Vidya Sagar). He proved to be an excellent student and in 1995 moved to a normal s c h o o l , B o s t o n Matriculation HS School, Nandanam. In Class 10, Siddharth scored 80%; he could not draw diagrams and was not allowed to do the practical examination.
In Class 12, he cleared the Board examination scoring 90% overall. After completing B Com from Vivekananda College in 2002, he went on to complete his MA Economics from Loyola College in 2004; he aggregated 74% in four semesters. He is now an executive with Royal Bank of Scotland, RBS Group . “It is a very responsible job. I check export and import documents for mistakes based on international banking standards and practice. The support from my colleagues is almost unbelievable,” explains Siddharth, who is the first Certified Documentary Credit Specialist (CDCS) with cerebral palsy in India. His mission is to carry out social work, particularly for uplifting the lives of people with multiple disabilities.
