News All about pavement temples Offering pongal & koozh are very common and the deity is taken out in procession in the local area. In some temples, the organisers attract the crowd with music, dance and discourses. In Angalaparameswari & Muneeswaran temples 'Mayana Kollai' is celebrated in Masi Amavasai day in a grand scale. The vehicle owners make it a point to take their vehicles to the bodyguard deity Muneeswaran temple. Only after an archana and offering will they take their vehicles for use. Dr.V.Balambal a resident of KK Nagar and a former Professor History has been making the neighbourhood proud because of her multifaceted activities and presentation of papers even in international forums.

She had identified the causes contributing to the establishment of these temples and also their functioning in her paper. She has traced the history of the Muneeswaran temple in Pallavan Salai- considered Recently she was invited to to be the body guard, various Vinayaka temples, participate in a national conference organised by the Nagathamman temple in KK Nagar, Angala parameswai Birla Archaeological & templein Pallavan salai, Cultural Research Centre, Padala Ponniamman temple Hyderabad, Birla Museum, in Purasaiwakkam, Bhopal & Hindusthan Charity Trust, Hyderabad on Muppathamman in T.Nagar, 'Tantra, Mantra & Yantra' (T Kalikambal temple in Parrys, Periyapalayatthamman in T. M Y ) in Indian Tradition. Nagar & Adyar, Renukamba The conference was held between January 23 and 25. in George Town and many Mariamman temples. More than 50 scholars participated. She noted that interestingly Dr. V.Balambal presented a in most of the pavement Pillaiyar temples, the priests paper on Mantras in are Brahmins and they chant Worship & Rituals in mantras in Sanskrit and or in Pavement Temples. She gave an introduction of TMY Tamil. Her observation was from Vedic times till date and that in almost all the Amman elucidated the importance of temples, the mantras are in Sanskrit. Her paper dealt in Tamil. She said that initially there were no mantras at all detail about the priests in but in course of time they temples and also on the have started following Tamil large number of pavement archana. Quoting a temples in the city. She government order she cited observed that most of the that in 1998, the Tamil Nadu pavement temples are Governmnet has made the dedicated for Pillaiyar, Amman and Muneeswaran. HREB to form committee to

compose mantras in Tamil with the help of Tamil scholars and religious heads for which early Tamil texts like Tevaram , Tiruvasakam, Tirumurugarruppadai, Nalayira Divyaprabhantam were used. They composed the Tamil archana (Porri). After getting the acceptance of the members, the archana songs were published. The book contains 8 porris, 16 porris and 108 porris. To train the people of all castes in becoming temple priests, now classes are being conducted. She added that in one way it is useful that the devotees who do not know Sanskrit may understand the Tamil Archana and temple priesthood is now open to all. She also states that once the pavement temples gain the faith and confidence of the local people and later outsiders, the devotees pay regular visits and in no time they turn to be rich with jewellery, silver, gold articles, festivals, rituals and so on. Especially the month of Adi is special in amman temples, special rituals and poojas are performed.

During her visits to many of the temples in Chennai, Balambal found out that even a mile stone can become a deity. The reasons for the mushrooming temples vary but the main reasons material gain and promotion of non- Brahmin priests. There are some cases filed in the High court to remove the pavement temples as they cause public nuisance. Opinions differ. But it is certain that the increase in number of pavement temples cannot be stopped. Many get their livelihood because of it and Tamil culture and these temples also promote tradition. She states that what is important is that the temple authorities should not be materialistic in approach but should work for the unity of the people in promoting religious spirit.

News 'Traffic problems remain the major issue'

Photos : V.Rajesh Ko.Su.Mani, Chennai Corporation councillor is not a new face to his constituency. He is omnipresent and is always available to meet and redress the grievance of people. One of the very friendly councillors he is on his second tenure in ward 122. He speaks to Vadapalani Times about the latest works he has initiated in his ward. "The three noon meal

"I have provided all basic facilities right from proper kitchen, gas connection, concrete sealing and so on," he adds. Widening of roads, laying of cement roads, construction of playgrounds and parks remains some of the regular works from his side; he did not forget to take care of students also. He had distributed prizes

to the school toppers of the last SSLC examination. He recalls that he had developed the Government Girl's Higher Secondary School at a cost of Rs 40 lakhs and has concreted roads in about 86 streets. "Constructions of computer science lab for corporation school students and public toilets for slum people, development and inauguration of a park at Indhira Colony with the help

of former MLA J.Anbazhagan's fund were some of the major works in my last tenure," he says. On the current projects he says that protection from flood water has been his major concern. " I am concentrating more on rain water harvesting projects," he says and adds that one of the projects in 4th avenue in Ashok Nagar is in the final stages. Recently 79 streetlights were installed

seven streets of in his ward. Speaking on the major issues faced by his ward people, he says that traffic is the main problem. "I am taking all the steps possible to ease the situation with Government's help," he says. "I have requested for flyover near Ashok Pillar junction to reduce traffic congestion," he says. He also adds that in case that is not possible, a flyover at the PT Rajan

Road and 2nd Avenue junction will also help to reduce traffic bottlenecks.
