Probus Club honours women
Probus Club of Chennai, a Senior citizens' Association sponsored by the Rotary Club of Madras, celebrated Women's Day on March 9 at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture jointly with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC). Kalaimamani Dr.Sarada Nambi Arooran , Information Commissioner was the chief guest. Probus Club honoured 77-year-old Dr R Kousalya Devi, social activist and managing trustee of Gandhi Gram Trust with Porbus Award of Excellence for her meritorious service to the rural people. While accepting the award, Dr. Kousalya Devi recalled her experiences, her love for social service and
how she was inspired by Gandhian philosophy. The Probus Club awarded the Probus Recognition Award to Dr V Balambal, former professor of history, University of Madras. She is a multi-fceted personality. She is social activist, educationist and past president of Probus Club of Chennai. She is also a researcher in historical study of Sangam and Chola age, bioethics and ageing. She has authored many books and is an ambassador of traditional Indian folk games in Indian and International forums. In her acceptance speech she remembered the influence of her father, mother and family members in her life and thanked the Probus Club for choosing h e r a s s e c r e t a r y,
vice- president and president to serve the senior citizens. Dr. Sarada in her address quoted the verses of Tiruvalluvar and Bharathiyar and told e women to balance work and family. “The cooperation of men was also needed for over all development,� she said. Probus Club honoured Mrs.Kannammal, a 102year-old woman on the occasion. Mr.Potopov, of RCSC greeted women for their achievements. Mrs. Kalpakam Srinivasamurthi presented a music programme titled Sakthi Malai. Vice president of the club, Mr. Audimoolam welcomed the gathering. Secretary Mr. Subharaj proposed a vote of thanks.

Meeting throws light on Women's Day
Shri S.S Jain College for Women, T Nagar celebrated its first graduation day recently. K Ponmudi, Higher Education Minister was the chief guest J.Anbazhagan, former MLA and Shri Parasmull Chordia, former president, Shri S.S Jain Education Society were the guests of honour. Shri Parasmull Chordia unveiled the statues of Shankaralal and Sundarbai (parents of Abhay Kumar
Srisrimal, secretary of the college). The convocation report was given by, Dr. Devaki Krishnankumar, college principal. The college started functioning from 2005, with a mere strength of 105 students and in four years, the strength has gone up to 2200 students. The Department of Visual Communication brought glory to the institution by getting 3rd to 10th university ranks (Brindha , Aghalya , Divya.S , Channi Chaithali ,
Deepika Bhandhari bagged the ranks ). The college also has the credit of having 16 rank holders from the Department of Commerce, the report said. Mr. Ponmudi delivered the Graduation Day address and also awarded the degrees to the candidates belonging to Computer Science, Commerce and Visual Communication Departments. The first Alumni Meeting was also held in the college premises after the function.
Sai Nagar Women's Civic Exnora organised a meeting on March 11 to discuss about the importance of International Women's Day. A large number of women attended the meeting and participated in the discussions. Some of the topics of discussion were informatory and they included a talk on Clara Jetkin, the first woman to arrange the women's meeting in Germany. The participants of the aforesaid meeting were working
women and they were demanding equal rights, highlighted the meeting. In the next year meeting they declared March 8 as Women's Day and today world over, this day is being celebrated as Women's Day, said one of the members. The meeting discussed that Indian women got their rights to vote even before many western countries. The participants said that though women in our country have proved their capabilities in all fields, there is still a long way to go.
The meeting highlighted that in the field of education, health and welfare, we are yet to progress. The plight of women in villages was also came up for discussions. Women are still treated badly in many villages. The meeting discussed today's youngsters their talent and independent attitude. They also discussed about the need to improve interpersonal relationship. After other discussions, the meeting took a resolution to celebrate Women's Day every year.

ARTS Arjunan Thabasu today
“Arjunan Thapasu” the play is written by N Muthuswamy, who was inspired by the brilliant dramatic elements present in the Mahabharatha Koothu ritual, where Arjuna, the Pandava prince, undertakes a rigorous journey and penance to r e c e i v e “Paasupathaasthra” from Lord Shiva. Right from Arjuna receiving the Kandeeva bow and Hanumath Dhwaja chariot from Lord Agni, (as narrated in the episode of the burning of the Kandava forest) and then receiving the “Paasupathaasthra” from Lord Shiva to the great eighteen day war fought with Duryodhana, the events that unfold in the epic Mahabharatha seem so relevant to incidents happening all over the world today. They only remind us that mankind has not changed much over the eras. Mankind has indulged in the Arms Race from time immemorial, and countries continue to horde weapons for war. This is what “Arjunan Thapasu” attempts to portray. The play in brief : The play starts from the point where Sage Vyasa visits the Pandavas, who are in their 14-year exile in the forest. The Sage

He advises Dharma to send Arjuna on a journey to receive the Paasupathaasthra from Lord Shiva. Thus Arjuna starts a northward journey to the Himalayas, the abode of Lord Shiva. On the way, he faces many obstacles, which test his concentration and determination. He is wooed by the beautiful Mohini, and the lustful Perandi tries to seduce him. But he overcomes these and many more obstacles and reaches the Himalayas. Here Arjuna starts a rigorous penance, but again, Mookaasuran, a demon sent by Duryodhana arrives to disturb him. Then Lord Shiva, disguised as Perandan, also enters the scene chasing the demon. A twist in the tale occurs here when the disciples of Ekalavya, who are there to witness Arjuna's penance, kill the demon. These disciples argue with Lord Shiva that Arjuna should not be granted the weapon, as it is deadly and capable of destroying the entire world. They argue that Arjuna already acquired the Kandeeva bow from Lord Agni, after he destroyed the Kandeeva forest. They tell

Lord Shiva that they would carry out a greater penance than Arjuna, and that they should be given the weapon, which they would immediately burn. The disciples even suggest that the Pandavas could make use of “Women's Scent”, a peaceful alternative to win the war. One of the disciples demonstrates how this scent works, and all the men, including Lord Shiva, start running behind her. Whereupon Draupadi enters, recalling her vow that the Kouravas be destroyed, and shuns the “Scent” alternative on moral grounds. Does common sense prevail or does Draupadi's angst win over Lord Shiva? Does he give the Paasupathaasthra to Arjuna? If so, why? These are the issues which are discussed in Mr N Muthuswamy's “Arjunan Thapasu”. Ananthalakshmi, daughter of M.A. Krishnaswamy and Parur Ananthsree, daughter of M.A. Sundaresan performed violin duet concert in such a way that it highlighted the Parur style at the same time it also proved their talent a n d f l u e n c y. The selection of artists for the evening was apt for the occasion. The performers were from Parur family, which has traditional and specific bani in violin. Being grand daughters of l i v i n g l e g e n d M.S.Anantharaman, the young girls were able to follow the style and able to present it in an admiring way. Lalitha Subramanian, director of Rasigapriya Academy of Music, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the idea behind the Music Festival. She recalled her student days in Music College, w h e r e M .
