Know your diabetes

I am diabetic for the past ten years. Can I eat sweets for Diwali? This is the common question raised by all the diabetic patients. The exact answer for this question is 'NO.' The common mistake or wrong concept among the diabetic patient is, 'I can take some sweet and take some extra tablet.' This type of practice is more dangerous than taking sweet. Some times it will bring down the sugar level to very low, leading to hypoglycemic coma. Those patients with blood sugar under control and if they are very particular about taking sweet on special occasions like Diwali, can take sweets made out of artificial sweeteners (aspartame). But keep in mind that all sweets are rich in ghee or oil, which has high cholesterol content. Patients with uncontrolled sugar values are requested to keep away from sweets, even made out of artificial sweeteners. Diwali celebration is not only for having sweets, but it's also much beyond that.
