Srimad Narayaneeya Parayanam

I am diabetic for the past ten years. In the recent past, I am having severe itching over legs. What should I do about it? This question is particularly relevant in the winter season. Many diabetic patients experience itching in winter, particularly in the legs due to the dryness of skin. Diabetes patients experience increased itching due to three reasons. 1. Due to diabetes, there will be a reduction of secretion from skin glands. 2. As the age advances and with diabetes, the itching will be more pronounced. 3. During winter, tnaturally the dryness will be more. So diabetes patients are prone for skin dryness which may cause itching and cracked heels. Through cracks bacteria may enter and may cause diabetic foot infections. Sometime severe cellulites can be triggered by simple itching. To avoid itching, wash your foot regularly and apply oil or cream to keep the skin moisturesed. Simple coconut oil or liquid paraffin or moisturizing creams can be applied to avoid dryness and itching. Daily examine your legs and foot for any colour change or any breach in skin to avoid foot infections.

Anyone with a flair for sathsanga is bound to know the greatness and the value of “Narayaneeya Parayanam. This grand grantha was composed, some 400 years ago, by Guruvayurappan's unparalleled devotee, Meppatthur Narayana Bhattatiri , in front of t h e s a n c t u m sanctorum of Lord Guruvayurappan

himself. Here Bhattatiri sings in scintillating Sanskrit, the sowlabya, the sowsheelya and the vathsalya of kochu Guruvayurappan - the powerful deity of G u r u v a y u r . Narayaneeyam is a hot favourite of all bhakthas –specially women, when it comes to parayanam, individually or in groups, at home or in

temples. Bhattatiri himself has specified the palashruthi of this parayanam, as 'Ayush, Arogyam and Aishwaryam,' in addition to the anubhvaa of Sri K r i s h n a ' s ananthakalyana guna mahima! Mrs Bama Krishnan of Anna Nagar, Chennai is one of the sincere and soulful teachers of this divine text, which is considered to be the quintessence of Srimad Bagavatham. She has been propagating the magnificent contents of this text –with its meaning- to groups of ladies in many parts of Chennai - with devotion and dedication for the past three decades. That she has been doing this totally free of cost is indeed remarkable, especially in this era of commercialisation! Hundreds of women who have been trained by her have not only received the “anubhava of spiritual

anubhoothi but “ishta karya siddi' of material benefits too! She has not only created bhakthas for Narayaneeyam but also teachers who can pass on this to many more devotees! O n e m o r e achievement of Mrs Bama is the release of an audio CD wherein she has recorded the entire Narayaneeyam as it is being taught by her. These CDs are available for purchase by all. Adherence to tradition

Mesmerising performance

Janani Jagath Karani, a d a n c e - d r a m a choreographed by Sheela Unnikrishnan, director of Sree Devi Nrithyalaya gave an inspiring start to the 40 th anniversary celebrations and Fine Arts Festival of Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust at Rama Rao Kalamandapam. The concept revolves around the universal mother and her several incarnations to destroy the evil and demons and establish peace and harmony by protecting Gods and sages.

Demons Madhu and Kaitabha have been killed by Lord Vishnu with the help of nidhradevi. The way Mohini, enchants the demons and take away the amrthu was depicted in a very appreciable manner. The presentation was filled with novelty, grace and dramatised performance by students. The performance of demons and their mannerisms and body language were excellent and the students performed with involvement. The other two forms of goddesses namely Sri

Dhakshayani and Sri Skandha Matha reflected neat narration.. The emergence of Karthiyayini ,from the flames by the thandava of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and the assassination of demon Mahisha was a treat to watch. The episodes – Maha Kali, Sri Lalithambhika as Kameshwari depicted the roudra swaroopa of g o d d e s s w h i l e assassinating Shuma, Nishumba, Chandan and Mundan. Angered by the marriage proposal by Shumba and Nishumbha the goddess takes nine forms to destroy the entire demons. The presentation of the getting extremely furious was simply superb. The depiction of Kameshwara-Kameswari `s marriage along with oonjal sevai was attractive. Bhandaasura vadham by Lalitha, wearing an armour, seated on the Sri Chakra throne and riding the chariot with four Vedas as wheels,

four purusharthas as horses were scenes with cinematic effects. The conclusion of dance dramas with “Sri Maha Shodasi” was apt. The team consisting of Sheela Unnikrishnan, Gayathri Sundaram(script), D r. R u k m a n i R a m a n i (lyrics), Kuldeep M Pai, Prabhakaran, Rupa, Gayathri(music and vocal support) , Ganapathy on the percussion, Parthasarathy on effects, M.S.Kannan on the violin, Bhavani Prasad on the veena, Palghat Sriram on the flute, keyboard, konnakkol, Audio Point on recording and Jayaraman & Vasthralaya on costumes have taken the drama to appreciable heights presenting memorable moments. T he concept, dramatic creation of episodes, implementation of dramatic nuances, inserting war techniques through martial arts and the students dedicated performance were well appreciated by the packed audience.
