Know your diabetes

I am having mild diabetes only. Should I take medicines for diabetes? Thanks for accepting that you are having diabetes. There are nothing called as mild diabetes or severe diabetes. All these terminology of mild diabetes and severe diabetes will mislead you and even misguide your treatment plans. There is nothing called as uncontrollable sugar. All range of diabetes blood sugar is controllable, provided you take appropriate medications. Since there is no uncontrollable diabetes, there is nothing called as severe diabetes. Risk of heart disease with pre-diabetes is three folds, when compared to normal persons. So terminology of mild diabetes is a misnomer. Diabetes needs control and prevention of complications as well. So do not misguide yourself by saying mild diabetes or severe diabetes. What is HbA1c ? What is the use of that ? HbA1c is a test useful to calculate the average blood sugar of a patient for the past three months. Here we are measuring the saturation of sugar in blood red blood cells - haemoglobin. This test is done in blood sample only; we can do the test anytime, irrespective of food intake. Normal non-diabetic persons will have HbA1c of less than 6% only. American Diabetes Association recommends maintaining HbA1c less than 7% to prevent diabetes complications. HbA1c in between 7 to 8 % indicates fair control. HbA1c more than 8% indicates poor control and HbA1c more than 10% warrants urgent need for diabetes management and control. HbA1c Value 6% 7% 8% 9% 10% 11%

As a part of its activities, Mangayar Mangalam – a voluntary organisation run b y w o m e n i n Virugambakkam will conduct a Vilakku Pooja during Dusserah. According to a spokesperson of the organisation, due to last year's overwhelming response and success, this year's Vilakku Pooja will be held on September 21 between 4.00 PM and 5.45 P. The number of women participants is restricted and priority is given on first-come firstserve basis. This event is conducted with the support of well-wishers and philanthropists. The Virugambakkam Chapter of Mangayar Mangalam – a voluntary ladies forum spearheaded by dedicated, selfless and enthusiastic women of the area, have been conducting various social and cultural events for the last few years in the neighbourhoods of Virugambakkam. Women volunteers of this

organisation periodically visit the nearby slums to provide medical-aid and conduct classes highlight ing the importance of education, hoping to bring down the illiteracy amongst the slum-dwellers. They are also conducting yoga, dance, music, tailoring and naturopathy classes for the poor and needy thereby sowing the seeds of hope in the hearts of the true aspirants who assume that these events are meant for people belonging to the middle and upper echelons of society alone. Mangayar Mangalam strongly believes that life is beautiful and enjoyable if we blend it with love, compassion, discipline, purity and selfless service. A decade of excellence CARVA recently celebrated its 10th anniversary at Sree Seva Mandir, Mahodhya Hall. Cleveland V V Sundaram and veteran violinist M Chandrasekeran were the chief guests. The students were grouped into four levels for the violin performance. Group one comprised mostly of tiny tots and they played Jandai Varisaigal. The next group played notes composed by Muthuswamy Dikshithar and concluded their piece with a Mohana varnam. The next two groups, played Kaatriley Varum Geetham tuned to Misra Sindubauravi, Rama Bakthi tuned to Sudha Bangala, Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai tuned to Raagamaalika, and Thillana in Misra

Sivaranjani ragam were rendered in perfect rhythm. Following this, the chief guests released the

souvenir. A CD titled Amrithavarshini by Carva Rajasekar was also launched. A grand violin

ensemble by the students calling for world peace brought the curtains down for the programme.

Full of innovation and charm Students of Lalitha Subramanian, Rasikapriya School of Music presented a thematic concert on Navarathri Oru Munnottam – Oru Kannottam, as part of the Vadapalani Times Music Festival. This was the 36th week of celebrations which was held at Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Madam, West Mambalam. The programme was captivating, innovative and informative. Students namely Suhasini, Sowmya, Smruthi, Pavithra and Kourav commenced the programme with Pullayar Kottu in a traditional manner. They narrated the factors of Navarathri Kolu, Navarathri Pooja, Suhasini Pooja and Vijayadasami celebrations and their narration was replete with social awareness, social v i s i o n a n d t h e responsibility of elders and kids. The credit should definitely go to Guru, as she has painstakingly prepared the script to suit children and their age. The sportiveness of the kids was p r a i s e w o r t h y. T h e programme explained the vision on Gods and emphasized that Goddess

The programme also highlighted the part to be played by children during Navarathi and what they should do and should not do during the navarathri. They also gave a description about the various naivedyams to be submitted to God during the festival.

Evening school for special children

Sri Lalitha Learning Centre for Special Children situated in Choolaimedu, is a school for children who are slow learners, LD's, moderately autistic, dyslexia and ADHD.
