Multi-model lab to make learning maths a fun
No more sweats and no more tears. Learning mathematics is going to be easy. Recently, School E d u c a t i o n M i n i s t e r, Thangam Thennarasu inaugurated the multi-
model maths lab at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar. With more than 80 multi-models, ranging from blocks, beads and other apparatuses,
explaining mathematical concepts are going to be an easy affair. Almost 276 mathematical concepts can be taught through these multi-models for students in the classes
from six to 10. This is for the first time that t h e Ta m i l N a d u Government has initiated the implementation of multi-models for teaching mathematics in Government Schools. The project will be implemented in 100 schools at the district level this year. Teaching using models will help provide students practical hands on feeling and it will also kindle students' interest in analysis and research. This method is supposed to reduce anxiety and fear about the subject and will provide a joyful environment for students to learn maths.So no more dropouts and no more maths phobia.

NEWS Know your diabetes New office bearers for Lions Club South Central
Dr Shanmugam, diabetes consultant, Chendur Diabetics Clinic dispels some myths about diabetes through this column. Since there are a lot diabetes patients and the condition has been there in many population, several wrong concepts are going around among diabetic patients. Here are some of the myths and the facts. I am eating a little food; particularly I am not taking my breakfast regularly. Still, my blood sugar values are not coming down. This is a common question from patients, as most of the diabetes patients do not have a proper understanding of the disease. Basically one needs sugar for body cells to thrive, particularly for the brain cells. The food we take used to get converted in to sugar by liver and is then released in to the blood stream. Whenever, there is no food, the glucose stored in the liver is released for a short time; fat and protein in our body is converted in to sugar with the help of counter regulatory hormones. While this process is on, these counter regulatory hormones increase the blood sugar and also produce dangerous particles called acetone bodies. High acetone level in the blood will lead to coma and may even to death. So fasting is dangerous. In diabetes patients, acetone formation is very rapid if they skip meal or insulin. And this formation is faster than that happens in non-diabetics. Whether the patient is taking food or no,t blood sugar level is maintained by the help of liver at the expense of fat and protein and with ketone production. Hence, diabetic patients should understand that skipping the food will not bring down the blood sugar level; rather it will cause high sugar level and trigger acetone formation, which is more dangerous. Diabetes patients should walk on an empty stomach and the walking must be very vigorous, just like that of 'sweat bath' This is common misconception. American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetes patients should go for 'brisk walking' for at least 30 minutes per day for 5 to 7 days a week. Brisk walking does not mean vigorous walking. Brisk walking means patients should be aware that he is walking. In other words, two steps per second can be considered as brisk walking. Patients can choose either morning or evening to walk as per their convenience. Always avoid walking on an empty stomach. Diabetes medicines work round the clock, bringing down the blood sugar values. Walking will reduce the blood sugar values further by increasing the insulin sensitivity. Walking on an empty stomach may produce dangerously low blood sugar called hypoglycemia. So avoid walking on an empty stomach. Dr Rajalakshmi Gurumoorthy, international t r a i n e r, L i o n s C l u b International installed the new office bearers for Lions Club South Central for the year 2009-10 at a gala function organised on June 17. The programme started with a prayer by cub V Sree Chitra, which was followed by a welcome address by past president Poornima Kumar. She introduced the installation officer Rajalakshmi as a dynamic and model Lion. It was a rare coincidence that she is the sister of Seetharaman, whom she later installed as the new president. Murali Krishnan a s s e c r e t a r y, R a v i Sahnakar as treasurer, Karthikeyan and Anish as vice-presidents were also installed by her. Rajalakshmi in her inspiring address asked the members to follow the motive of Lionism by doing service and promoting fellowship. Service projects The club which was formed just a year ago has been doing yeomen services in serving the needy. The club's president announced that there would be two permanent projects this year from the club- one adoption of the government school in Jafferkhanpet and also the construction of a home for street children, for which the land was sponsored by Lion Deivanayakam. For installing the reverse osmosis plant to provide drinking water facility at the school in Jafferkhapet, the
club has so far raised Rs. 86,000. Of that a cheque for Rs. 50,000 was given to Mr Srinivasan to start work on the project. A cheque for Rs. 10,000 was handed over to Dr Shanth Kumar, former governor of the district for the old age home which was his brain child. Rs. 15,000 worth notebooks and Rs.20,000 towards schools fee for needy students were also distributed on the occasion. Summer programmes The club conducted various free programmes in the summer, which included chess, silambam, karate and computer science. The faculties, Mohanavalli (karate and silmabam), sundar( computer science) and Kumar (chess) who c o n d u c t e d t h e programmes free of cost were honoured by the club.

NEWS Now a bowling machine to perfect the cricketers
Budding Stars Cricket Academy functioning at Pon Vidhyashram School, Valasaravakkam inaugurated its new BOLA Bowling machine on June 14. The valedictory function of the summer camp was also held the s a m e d a y . C.R.Vijayaraghavan, vicepresident, Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was the chief guest for the function. Pushpa Balajagam, CEO, Pon Vidhyashram group of schools graced the occasion. R.Ashwin, the tall and handsome Tamil Nadu Ranji, South Zone Cricketer and Chennai Super Kings player (IPL 2009 fame) knocked the first ball from the bowling machine and inaugurated the facility. He appreciated the efforts taken by Sai Subramanian of the academy in providing the trainees professional infrastructure and advanced methods of coaching. He said that he was exposed to the bowling machine only at the age of 18, but the young trainees of Budding Stars Cricket Academy are
fortunate to get this opportunity at the age of 12 itself. He asked the parents provide enough opportunities to their children and to motivate and encourage them even if they fail. He also shared some moments he spent with International players like M.S.Dhoni , Hayden , Morkel and Muralidharan in the IPL 2009 for Chennai Super Kings team. A reflection of today's society Sowmya Theatres presented Padmavyuham as a part of Mudra`s Dasarathinangal at Infosys Hall, T.Nagar. The concept of the play was by T.V.Radhakrishnan, an eminent writer and director. The story revolved around sentiments. The values of relationship in a family were handled very nicely. Scene after scene, the current trend and selfishness of youngsters towards their parents were clearly shown. The entire story was in a flash-back format, which was in the form of a narration by Dr Prabhu, a selfish son at the inauguration of ThaiThandiar Illam. Rangarajan, a sick person and his wife dreams of making their son a doctor to serve the poor. They suffer a lot to fund his education. But Prabhu falls in love with a rich girl, without knowing that she is his uncle's daughter. His uncle who came from a poor background has grown wealthy and greedy and get ready to solemnise the wedding. He forgets
that he was a classmate of Prabhu's fatherRangarajan and P a r o p a k a r a n Paramanandan. He treats Prabhu's family in a very shabby manner. Paramanandan's efforts to solve the problems did not succeed. In spite of knowing all these facts, Prabhu settles in his uncle's house and refuses to see his mother, who dies without seeing him. After a prolonged struggle, Rangarajan receives Rs 10 lakhs from the court as compensation for his wife's death. Rangarajan decides to give his amount
10 lakh rupees to his son, despite his friend's advice. Prabhu realises his mistake and builds a home in the name of ThaiThandaiar Illam. In this play, Karur Rangarajan as Rangarajan, Kaveri as Seetha has lived as their characters. The others, SBI Murali as Paropakaran Paramanandan proved himself. ARTS Clear diction and neat execution
As part of the 23rd week of the Music Festival organised by Vadapalani Times, Sruthi, disciple of D r . M a n j u l a Sreeram,.Lalitha Subramanian and Sree Rangachari gave a vocal concert. The festival is being organised at Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Matam, West Mambalam. Sruthi commenced her concert with Calcutta Krishnamoorthy`s varnam in kadanakuthuhalam ragam with swaras. She continued with Mysore Va s u d e v a c h a r y a ` s Va n d e n i s a m a h a m i n hamsadhwani ragam set to adi thalam. Selection of the sub-main and main items suited her vocals v e r y w e l l . Aparamabhakthi in panthuvarali executed with alapana showcased the
raga lakshnam. The neraval charanam, Thirusathalalu theerchi kanti reppa vale gaachu was good. Her sadhaana was evident in the swaraprakriya. Ramanamamrutha Paaname in khamas provided melody. Bhairavi was chosen as main raga for the evening. Detailed alapana of bhairavi by the vocalist and violinist was well appreciated. The lengthy swaraprasthanam was loved by one and all. Upachaaramulanu Chegonavaiah stood for clear diction. Thani by the mrudangist was very good. As thukada items, virutham was performed in shanmugapriya and behag ragas in a nice and neat manner. GKB`s Idu thano thillaisthalam rendered in behag was good. The
Thirupughaz in chakravakam was an inspiring piece. She concluded her concert with LalgudiJayaraman`s desh raga thillana, in a traditional format. Lalitha Subramanian, director of Rasigapriya introduced the artistes and kick-started the programme. Master Sreeram on violin and master Kowshik on mirdungam gave dedicated support to the vocalist. As a token of appreciation, Lion KP Vijayakumar, editor-publisher of Va d a p a l a n i T i m e s , distributed certificates to the artistes. A large number of rasikas who were present, appreciated Vadapalani Times for promoting the young and talented artistes.

Bombay Lakshmi Rajagopalan gave a vocal concert at Sree Sundarsekharendra Saraswathi Hall as part of the Chrompet Cultural Academy's monthly concert. She commenced her concert with an abhogi varnam. Ragam kalyana vasantham's lakshanas were clearly visible in her alapana. The keerthana, Manoharam Pranamami Mahesam Umapathim, was impressive. Shyama Sastri's Mariveregathi evvaramma in ananda bhairavi ragam was presented with alapana, swaram and the sahityanubhava was palpable. Thyagaraja's Ganamoorthe in ganamoorthi ragam and
Alaipayude Kanna in kanada scored provided rasanubhava and were well-received by the audience. Poorvi kalyani ragam was the main item of the evening, and she sang it with detailed alapana and lengthy kalpanaswaram. The violinist during the kalpanaswars and mrudangist in the tani proved their mettle. Deekshithar`s Meenakshi Memudham Dehi was executed in a dedicated and submissive manner. After a declaration regarding the renewal of temple libraries in the a s s e m b l y K.R.Periakaruppan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments has recently re-launched the library project at Vadapalani Andavar Temple. HR & CE Deputy Commissioner of the temple, Vasunathan says, “The objective of the library is to help devotees develop knowledge in the areas of spirituality. This achievement was possible only due to the cooperation of the temple
trustees - Dr. Seergazhi K.Sivachidambaram,. Kannappan, Palani Gramaniyar, Kanmani Sreenivasan, and Manimaran.” The library has been set up with the donations from devotees. Vel Tech Group has donated books worth of Rs.70,000. Located within the temple premises, it is airconditioned also. The audio library has collections of discourses, S u p r a b h a t h a m , Thiruvachagam and so on. Three persons can use the facility at a time. Thiagarajan from Vadapalani and Subramanian from Choolaimedu are all praise for the facility. Thiagarajan says that books on Tamil Literature, Tamil culture and civilization, epics, bhakti literature, Veda,
Upanishads, Hindu rituals, Saiva –Vainava puranas and other religious books are available at the temple libray. It is the environment and the cooperation from the librarian and the assistant that attracts Subramanian to here. Kamala theatre is now a multiplex
Kamala Theatre, one of the landmarks in Vadapalani has taken a new avatar now. The inauguration of the multiplex, a newly renovated facility was held on June 12. Maasilamani and Manjal Veyyil are being screend in screen no.1 and in screen no.2, n o w. I t w a s S a n g e Muzhangu by MGR which was screened some 36 years ago as the inaugural film at Kamala Theatre. The recently renovated multiplex movie theatre has ultra modern sound
t e c h n i q u e s . V.N.Chidambaram, owner of the theatre has brought in the new facilities with assistance from his sons, Valliappan, Naagu and Ganesh. On occasion of the inauguration of the multiplex, Valliappan, e l d e s t s o n o f Chidambaram spoke to Vadapalani Times about the state-of-the art facility. He told that when the theatre was started some 36 years ago, it was a non a/c one. He said the
theatre was in the forefront of bringing up appropriate changes from time to time along with technological advancement. “Now the theatre is made into two screens, as the management's passion for cinema has not allowed them to convert it into a commercial complex,” he said. “The theatre has a capacity of 997. This has been converted into two screens now with screen1 &screen 2. While 626 seats have been provided along with push back seat system in screen no.1 and 366 seats have been provided with the same facilities in screen. 2. Fourway sound systems with low, medium and very high frequency levels and exquisite treatment for walls have been provided with 24 speakers,” Va l l i a p p a n a d d e d . Additional facilities for parking two and four wheelers and food court are added attraction. The revised ticket prices are in the range of Rs 65 to Rs.95.
