Residents form human chain to highlight civic issues

Virugambakkam Residential Welfare Association organised a human chain at Koyambedu on Jawaharlal Nehru 100 Feet Road, to highlight the civic problems and long pending problems such as traffic, sewage etc and to draw the attention of Corporation officers and chief minister for a permanent solution to their p r o b l e m s . S . Arumainathan, president of the Association Human has initiated the human chain. K.Mullaivanam, secretary of the Association welcomed the chief guest and gathering. A.K.Venkatasubramanian, former secretary to Central Government inaugurated the Human Chain. He said that the area from Arcot Road to Poonamalli Road (covering the pin codes 600 087,600 092, 600 093 and 600 107) has 400 streets and has a population of one lakh.

The organizers of the human chain said that a large number of memorandums have already been submitted to the concerned authorities and letters has been send to the Chief Minister. It is the lack of response from the officials that have angered the residents. The organizers said that they are planning a three stage action to highlight the burning issues of Virugambakkam area. About 350 residents of different areas of Virugambakkam participated in human chain. The organizers said that as the second stage action, they would hold play cards, detailing the demands and the action to be taken by government to solve the problems. They also said that if the government do not initiate any action, the residents of Viruggambakkam area will conduct a fast in a massive

The seventh CavinKare Ability Awards were presented at a grand event held at Sri Mutha Ve n k a t a s u b b a R a o Concert Hall, last Sunday. The CavinKare Ability awards are an initiative to make the general public aware of the potential of people with disabilities, paving the way for an inclusive society. There are two categories of awards. The CavinKare Ability Award for Eminence, was presented Javed Ahmed Ta k , f r o m A n a n t n a g , Jammu & Kashmir who became paraplegic after a result of a militant attack, Mr. Tak not only over came personal trauma but also established his own organisation that caters to needs of people with all disabilities. Mt. Tak received a trophy, citation and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs.

The CavinKare Ability Mastery Awards were given to three persons who have excelled in their field of choice. This year the recipients of the Mastery Awards were Nityananda D a s ( B h u b a n e s h w a r, Orissa) - an amputee who excels in dance, living his dream; Rajiv Rajan (Chennai, Tamilnadu)- a disability activist with cerebral palsy and Sai Prasad Vishwanathan (Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh)- who holds a full research fellowship from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA and been a sky diver as well‌ living life to the fullest in every sense. Each of the achievers received a memento, a citation and cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. This time, the event included an amazing inclusive fashion show. Choreographed by Sunil

Menon, this unique fashion event showcased designer collections of Gabbana, Neesha and Raji. The dignitaries who graced the occasion included Mohini Giri, chairperson, Guild of Service, Radhamohan, awardwinning director, N.Murali, managing director, The H i n d u , D r . V . Krishnamurthy, chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council and N. Ram, editor-inchief, The Hindu. Present amongst them were C. K. Ranganathan, CMD, CavinKare Pvt Ltd., and Jayshree Raveendran, executive director, Ability Foundation. The eminent jury who selected this years' recipients were Mohini Giri, N. Murali, actress Revathy, Radhamohan, and the 'Mozart of Madras', A.R. Rahman.

World Glaucoma Day observed

Sankara Netralaya organised an awareness meeting in its premises on the occasion of world glaucoma day. Dr.Supriya and Dr.Adithyan detailed the causes of glaucoma and its seriousness in Tamil and English languages through an audio-.video presentation. They explained that glaucoma affects the eye nerve and may or may not be associated with an increased eye pressure. Only a comprehensive eye examination including eye pressure check, examination of angle of the

eye, eye nerve examination and if needed, checking the peripheral vision is key to detect glaucoma, for which any one above 35 years of age should have their eyes checked routinely by an eye specialist, informed the doctors. An interactive session between the audience and doctors were organised. Mr. Krishnamoorthy, a 74year-old patient shared his views about the glaucoma treatment and care taken by Sankara Nethralaya. He added that he was glaucoma patient for two decades and after laser

treatment and surgery, he is normal. Dr.V.Santha, deputy director of Glaucoma department conveyed that the department was commenced three decades back and annually treats 4500 cases. Dr.L.Vijaya, director of the department thanked the gathering and doctors for making the awareness meeting a grand success. Alaiyodu Vilayadu audio launched

Actor Sivakumar is a writer and painter is known to everyone. Now the actor is unfolding another facet of his talent, this time showcasing his oratorical skills. The actor gave a speech

for more than two hours after mastering 100 verses of Kambha Ramayana recently. The event took place in Thindal, Erode and was attended by almost 5000 people.

The same would be made available on a DVD format and would also be telecast on a TV channel. Sivakumar also released his book Kamban En Kadhalan on which his speech was based at the occasion. Sivakumar said that Kambha Ramayana is a rich epic. “It is told by scholars over 10- days or more by them. But not many could make it to hear it,� he said. He said that he want to create an interest in the minds of the younger generation. As youngsters don't have the time to attend such discourses, he said he plans to release an audio CD which would be of use. They could listen to it even when they travel. Sivakumar has been studying the scripture for more than a year before mastering the verses. He narrated the verses without any notes and break. He had used simple language and e x a m p l e s f r o m day-to-day life

The audio-release function of Alaiyodu Vilayadu was held recently. K Bhagyaraj, R Parthiban and actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam, were the chief guests at the audio release function. Rama Narayanan,

E D U C AT I O N A L F E AT U R E S For holistic development Tiny tots enthrall the audience of children Vadapalani Matriculation Higher Secondary School was founded in 1964 and is being managed by Vadapalani Educational society. In 1996, it was c o n v e r t e d i n t o Matriculation Higher Secondary School following the matriculation pattern. The school has been imparting holistic education aiming all round personality development to the students. Along with

the school syllabus, the school takes special care and interest to train students in spoken English, listening, reading, writing and speaking. The school conducts weekly competitions in oratorical, handwriting and quiz competitions as well. Every day two children from class two to six are trained to deliver messages in English, Tamil or Hindi in the school assembly in order to

overcome stage fear and improve spoken English. A very keen attention is given to each student to maintain good handwriting and inculcate good manners. Specially trained teachers teach extra curricular activities like karate, yoga. MAK Day celebrated

Jawahar Vidyalaya Kindergarden School, Ashok Nagar, celebrated it's annual day on March 12 at Mahodaya Auditorium. Shoba Krishnan, correspondent, Lalchand Milapchand Dadha Secondary School, Choolaimedu was the guest of honour. The correspondent and secretary of Jawahar Vidyalaya, A.S. Narayana Rao welcomed the

gathering and principal of Jawahar Vidyalaya Kindergarden, Alphonsa Jacob introduced the guest. Shoba Krishnan gave away the proficiency prizes to 108 LKG and UKG children. The cultural programme started with a colourful item ”I am happy” by the preschool tiny tots. They traveled to a “Merryland” and enjoyed a game of

jump and dance finally singing their way home melodiously. The toddlers made the audience sway to the tune of “Boom Boom” for an English song and then went on to a Punjabi number. The grand finale was a dance drama in Tamil about the different incarnations of the goddess, which received a standing ovation from the audience.

Annual Day fiesta MA Krishnaswamy group of schools chairman M.A.K.S.Rajgopalswamy organised MAK Day, on the occasion of centenary celebrations of M.A.Krishnaswamy at Rama Rao Kalyana Mandapam, T.Nagar on March 17. Nithya Kalyani informed the gathering about M.A.Krishnaswamy`s life and his achievements in

the field of education. Even after his demise, his son Rajgopalswamy has been following his father's vision and upholding the values advocated by him. His grandson Vishnuprasad, Lalitha, principal of Ashok Nagar School, Rai, manager, Subha, principal of Avadi branch and Madhuri, principal of K.K.Nagar were present on t h e o c c a s i o n .

Vishnuprasad recollected his childhood memories and detailed the character and ideals of his grandfather. Rai, shared his working experience with Krishnaswamy and requested students to follow Krishnaswamy`s ideals. He recalled that Krishnaswamy was an encouraging and guiding force.

Innovation is the key seems to be the matra of the Music Festival organized by Vadapalani Times and Music World, Saligramam. As the festival marched it to its 11TH week, innovation and novelty took center stage. S.T.Charunyanath, disciple of Sivaprasad and Radha Raghavan`s performed a whistle concert at Music World premises on last Sunday. Charunyanath`s passion and involvement could be observed throughout his concert. It was heartening to hear that he is a final year student of B.Tech. The audience for the particular concert was highly music oriented and was very supportive. This gave further impetus to the artiste. Rasikas' response to every item encouraged the artiste to excel. The concert commenced with

bhairavi raga varnam set to ata thala and was traditional. Deekshithar`s siddhi vinayakam in shanmugapriya raga set to roopaka thalam was a nice beginning. Thiagaraja swamy`s bhavanutha in Mohanam was selected as sub-main item of the evening. Alapana was done doing jusice to the raga lakshnam. Likewise other thiagaraja`s kruthis bantureethi koluvu in hamsanadam set to adhi, nee daya raada in kambhoji reflected the artiste's sahithya and rasaanubhavam. NEWS Celebrating women power in a grand way

Jayalakshmi Ammal Educational Trust organised a day-long c e l e b r a t i o n t o commemorate World Women's Day at the Corporation Play Ground in 14th Sector, KK Nagar. Corporation Mayor M Subramanian was the chief guest of the evening and presented Siranda Penmani Virudu to 15 women, who had committed themselves for social cause. In his

address, he appreciated trust as the best service organization, which stands for women welfare and creating awareness among women. He added that the Government has been allocating Rs.10, 000 for district level and Rs.50, 000 for state level for women self-help groups. Besides, conference halls with a capacity of 500 seats have been arranged zonewise for conducting meetings, he said. He

announced that 3,80,000 self-help groups are there in the state and further 75,000 groups are in the proposal stage. He informed that 95 per cent of the self-help groups in Tamil Nadu are repaying their loans. He appreciated Vairasekar, founder of the trust`s efforts in implementing government schemes. Vairasekar in his presidential address detailed the past and present situations of
