A positive vote runners-up in the race, the NDA is way behind. The UPA virtually has a hasslefree time negotiating the formation of the next ministry. And now with support pouring in from even unsolicited quarters, it enjoys a comfortable majority of 327 seats in a house of 543 and with this it can carry on with the mission of ruling over the largest democracy for the next five years. As against all the speculations by the media about the poll outcome in Elections 2009, the electorate in the country has given an unambiguous verdict in favour of the United Progressive Alliance-UPA. Though UPA is 10 seats short for a simple majority with 262 seats, the final tally of the

ensure that the customer can move into his apartment at the earliest. According to Harshad Doshi, chairman of Doshi Housing, “We have observed that as far as the Chennai residential market is concerned, there is a fair bit of demand, but one of the reasons that people are holding back on their purchase decision is anticipation of further fall in prices. It is true that prices have fallen in the last six months, but a further fall looks highly unlikely. In spite of this, people still want to wait in anticipation of further decline. This price guarantee scheme will help the serious buyer to take a decision.”

Explaining the scheme, Mr Doshi added, “The price guarantee ensures that the customer need not worry about a further fall in price. But at the same time, he gets the benefit of price appreciation. If the selling price of the apartments in the project falls below the price at which the customer has purchased the apartment, he gets the benefit of the reduced price. However, if the price appreciates, he does not have to pay anything more than his booking price.” The apartments are priced at Rs.2795 per sq.ft, which is 20% lower than the prevailing price of Rs.3500 per sq.ft. in Tambaram.

NEWS (A positive vote... from Page 1) Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala are proof of it. The 20 seats it bagged single-handedly in UP gives it a boost in the endeavours to recapture the state, which once had the capacity to determine who should reign in Indraprastha. The election reiterates that the Congress is the only national party, which has its roots in all the state and union territories. The two lessons Election 2009 has projected are these. One, the people of the country was not to lapse their votes on

whimsical grounds. The other, they were reluctant to buy the media vilification campaign. Anyway, it will be a moment of pride for he UPA, when an antagonistic media who throughout the campaigning period downplayed the impact of the NREGA and the waiver of agricultural loans on the electorate, now attributing the victory to these two. And any analysis of Election 2009 in the postresult context will not be complete, if one omits to mention the Tamil Nadu chapter. A palpable pro DPA wave

notwithstanding, a vast chunk of the print media in Tamil Nadu, were vying with each other in giving Jayalalitha seats, according to their assessments. Stability has been the plank on which the Congress won hands down this time and it is the same that worked in Karunanidhi's case. The stability, the stability of being a loyal partner in a coalition which many of his political rivals cannot even dream of. M.T. Baby

Bhavana, disciple of Akhila Siva gave a vocal concert at Kanchi Kamakoti Sankaramatam on Sunday at the 18th week of Music Festival, organised by Vadapalani Times. She commenced her concert with a jalajakshi varnam in hamsadhwani ragam. Sarasiruha in nattai ragam set to adi, D e e k s h i t h a r ` s kanchdalayathakshi in kamala manohari ragam were good. Mohanam ragam was chosen as the main item of the evening. It was handled with detailed

a l a p a n a a n d kalpanaswara. It reflected the guru`s training. Kapali, a composition of Papanasan Sivan, was sung with clear diction. Apparam najaanaa mere in k a a p i , G N B ` s paramukham in kanada set to adi proved to be good choices. Baagumeera in sankarabharanam was sung with alapana and swaram. Bhavana is a student of DAV School. Bhooma, the violinist, a student of Lalgudi Alamelu proved herself during alapana, kalpana swaram

and gave good support to t h e v o c a l i s t . K.R.Narayanan, mrudangist, disciple of Guruvayoor Durai reflected his guru’s expertise during thani and gave a smooth support. Lalitha Subramanian, Director of Rasikapriya, inaugurated the concert, after detailing the aims and objectives of the Vadapalani Times Music Festival. She introduced the artistes to the audience and also distributed the certificates. -Sharma

A musical tribute to RJ

Todi is my favourite raga. I required no initiation or tutelage to identify this raga. The very first time I heard it, I knew that the raga was todi and the fascination began then. But it took me 15 years to hear it from my favourite singerM.S.Subbulakshmi . This was from a recording of a concert held in Mumbai somewhere in late 50s or early 1960s . The threeand-a- half hour concert featured a varnam and a ragam tanan pallavi in todi. The elaborate alaap from the voice of a relatively young MS was able to take the listeners to ecstatic heights. I still remember, for the next three months nothing else registered in my ears. MS has rendered several masterpieces in todi raga. Be it the tough swarajati of Shyama Shastri, Rave himagiri kumari or Vandinam Muralam solai which has a million brigas cascading, she has struck

a distinct chord in the hearts of the listeners. Sometimes it has been just a small phrase in a big kriti, which gets you clean bowled. The kriti that I am referring here is the popular Papansam kriti, karthikeya Kangeya. The 3rd charanam begins as Maal maruga shanmuga muruga guha, she improvises this line and then another line vadivel maruvum mamala kara kamala is improvised to a crescendo. Between these two lines she sings a phrase 'matanga vadana sahodara azhaga” which lasts less than 20 seconds and traverses just a few notes in this raga, but is sufficient to take you to an unimaginable state of bliss. And todi is hauntingly blissful, whether it is a 20 second phrase, a 20 minute alaap or two hours of exclusive performance. Nanditha Ravi regaled the audience with her two hour concert on Subbulakshmi's To d i o n M a y 1 7 a t

Endrendrum MS held at Va s a n t h a M e m o r i a l Cancer Centre , Ashok Nagar. She is the daughter and disciple of the renowned musician Rama Ravi. She is also a scholar who is pursuing a doctorate in music. That evening she brought in glimpses of the king of ragas , todi as rendered by MS. S u b b u l a k s h m i ' s To d i began with the varnam Eranapai which was followed by Kamalambike, the dhyana kriti among the Kamalamba navavarna kritis of Dikshitar. The next piece Koluva maragda of Thyagaraja was where the splendour of todi began to show and it peaked in the ragam tanam pallavi. She concluded her recital with a Narayana teertha Tarangam. The audience at the venue were mesmerised by the beauty of the raga and its portrayal.

The rock concert held at PSBB, KK Nagar on May 15was a fitting musical tribute to the multi-faceted musician, Arjun Vasudev, who died in a road accident in March. Arjun was an actor, film-maker, football player and guitarist. Arjun’s family members and friends had put together the show. A large number of music lovers turned out for the show wearing specially designed black colour Tshirts with Arjun’s image and OuRJ’09 on it. The organisers announced that the amount collected through the show would go to Sathvika, who is in coma stage and is undergoing treatment at Ramachandra Medical College. Arjun Vasudev, who was popularly known as “RJ” had a passion for music

and was part of a rock band ESiON. To celebrate his work and his life, his friends and band members, Harish Swaminath, Aswin Ramakrishnan, Tej Kiran, Karthik Narasimhan, Sindhuja Shankaran and Immanuel performed on the occasion, which included some of the compositions of RJ. Arjun’s brother Vasudev replaced him in the band by playing the lead guitar. The members also played some of the compositions of Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Pantera and Metathica, from whom RJ had drawn a lot of inspiration. Playback singer A.L.Raghavan sang “Engirindalum Vazhga”composed by MSV. The lyrics were modified to suit the occasion as it paid

homage to the late RJ, who would have captured our hearts with his music, if he were alive. Dr. M.S.Viswanathan, grandfather and godfather of Arjun presided over the programme. It’s also to be noted that the organisers have decided to commence annual awards in the name of Arjun for guitarists from next year. Arjun’s popularity was such that students and his friends took interest in organising every segment of the show. Arjun’s friends and alumni of PSBB. Arjun’s classmates from Loyola presented an audio-visual presentation. And, when the last song was doing the rounds, the clouds opened up, giving way to thundershowers. Perhaps, the clouds too were mourning his loss.
