Workshop at Hyderabad for the welfare of elderly

Myth : Diabetes patients can take fruits juices with out added sugar. Fact : Fruit Juices are not allowed for diabetes patients. All type of fruit juices, tender coconut water and bottled drinks will increase blood sugar. If blood sugar is under good control (ie., Fasting blood sugar 80120mg post prandial blood sugar 120-160mg) fruit salads like apple, guava, mosambi and papaya can be taken as mid-morning snacks or mid-evening snacks. Any one fruit salad can be taken in a single day. Lemon juice with a little salt or artificial sweetner can be taken, if blood sugar is within normal limits. Vegetable soups and tomato soups can be taken in addition to mid-morning snacks. Myth : I am taking ragi, wheat and oats porridge (kanji) only. But my blood sugar levels are not under control. Fact : Ragi, wheat and oats porridge (kanji/koozhu) or predigested gruel (kazhi) are not advisable for diabetic patients. All these kanji, koozhu and kazhi preparations will increase blood sugar. Ragi, wheat and oats are advocated for diabetes patients for its fiber content. If we grind these ragi, wheat and oats to make kanji, koozhu or kazhi, fiber contents will be lost and we are making the complex sugar to simple sugar, which will make blood sugar to rise. Instead of liquid preparations, ragi, wheat oats can be taken in solid form like that of dosa or uppuma to have fiber content in our diet.

Dr.V.Balambal, retired professor of History, University of Madras, immediate past president of the Probus Club of Chennai and EC member o f t h e Ta m i l N a d u Federation of Senior Citizens was a special invitee to the two-day workshop on 'Sensitisation of Stakeholders in Implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 on July 17 and 18 organised by the National Institute of social Defence, Ministry of Social J u s t i c e a n d E m p o w e r m e n t , Government of India and Heritage Foundation Hyderabad at the Heritage Hospital, Hyderabad. Many representatives of the organisations of the senior citizens of A n d h r a p r a d e s h participated. K.R. Gangadharan, MD of the Heritage Hospital & Organiser of the workshop welcomed the gathering and spoke about the aim of the workshop. R.N.Mittal and Dr.Rao B Chelikani discussed the need for the implementation of the act to improve the condition of the elderly. Though the act was passed in 2007, Gujarat is the only State which has implemented the act. Dr. Vyasamurthy of Secunderabad spoke on 'Incidences of Abuse', bringing out many case studies on the abuse of

elder men. Dr.V. Balambal made a power point presentation on 'Do Elder Women suffer Abuse and Neglect?' She explained the term 'abuse' and what are the reasons for abuse, the relation between the abuser and abused; whether elder abuse and neglect are common; symptoms of abuse etc. She pointed out the condition of older women of upper, lower and middle classes and how they are physically, financially, mentally, psychologically and even sexually abused. She made a poignant mention about how even the servants and nurses abuse them if the care takers are indifferent to the care receivers. She made case studies of elder women from the three strata. At the end of her

talk, she suggested solution to this permanent problem from the point of the care givers and receivers. She applauded the services being rendered by the voluntary organizations and NGOs and the Government to safeguard the interests, especially health and property of the senior citizens. She said that The 2007 Act and the Reverse Mortgage Scheme of the government are boon to the elderly. On 18th there was face to face with Anita Rajendra, IAS, Commissioner for Senior Citizens Welfare, V.S.K. Kaumudi,IPS, ,Inspector General of Police and K.T.Ujela, IPS. The lively discussions agreed that funds allotted for elders are very little but police is always ready to help and

safeguard the seniors. It was heartening to note the interest shown by the police officials in elders' safety. After that, the participants drafted the recommendations to be handed over to the government to ensure that the Act is implemented in all States. The States should allot more funds for elder welfare and give more concessions to them in various fields. It was a very useful workshop and it was felt necessary that following the footsteps of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Senior Citizens Associations also should appeal to the Government to implement the Act immediately to improve the condition of the elderly. -Sarma

Non-supply of Metro water irks residents

Kanchana Paati in Adyar now Kanchana Paati My Grandma's Place, an 8am to 8pm Child Care and

Chinmaya Nagar Main Road, ( V V Koil Street -Corportion Ward No.65) is a busy link used by hundreds of motorists everyday as it serves as a short cut to reach Saligramam,Valasaravakkam and Porur from Koyambedu. This is a pure residential area with apartments on either side. But the residents are constantly disturbed by the continuous honking by motorists. And truck drivers merrily use air-horns adding to the chaos. This stretch is a nightmare for the elderly and school going children. I therefore request the concerned authorities to make this stretch a "No Horn Area" with a few speed breakers.

Adyar, Chennai - 20. www.kanchanapaati.in

Sir, It is distressing that Lambert Nagar 3rd Cross Street, Virugambakkm is suffering due to non-supply of Metrowater through pipeline for over the past three years. Our representations to the top officials of CMWSSB through our Lambert Nagar Association and the residents' individual efforts to get the water supply had not born fruits so far. The complaints registered through on-call services also had not yielded the desired results. On the other hand, Online Complaints could not be registered as we received the message saying “This page cannot be opened due to technical problems. With most of the residents at Lambert Nagar 3rd Cross Street, duly paying the water tax on time and some even in advance, we, the residents hope that on seeing this open letter, the CMWSSB will take immediate action to restore the water supply in our street, once for ever. Arjunan Thabasu at Kooth-p-Pattarai

Koothu-p-Pattarai is staging its new Tamil play Arjunana Thabasu written and directed by N.Muthuswamy, artistic director of Koothu-pPattarai. The play was successfully staged earlier this year in Feb-March. The story is derived from the ritualistic Koothu interpretation of Mahabaratha where Arjuna begins a rigorous journey to meet Lord. Shiva and obtain the Paasupatha-asthra from

him. In Mr.Muthuswamy's interpretation, Ekalaiva's disciples make a counterplea with Lord Shiva that Arjuna should not be granted the weapon, as it is deadly and capable of destroying the entire world. The disciples even suggest that the Pandavas could make use of “Women's Scent”, a peaceful alternative to win the war. Does Lord Shiva oblige? To find out watch the artistes perform Arjunan Thabasu at Kooth-

p-Pattarai premises, which is at No.1, Vaikasi Street, Chinmaya Nagar, Stage-2, Virugambakkam, Chennai 600 092, between 23rd and 26th of this month for 4 days. Timings 7 pm. Spreading the message of Paramacharya

Srimad Ramayana relates the episode of Sage Rishyashringa, wherein the drought ridden kingdom Anganadu was blessed with a downpour, when the sage entered the famine struck kingdom ruled by King Lomapada. Similarly, on last Sunday, Chennai’s spiritual suburb West Mambalam too, experienced an outbreak of downpour as Paranur M a h a t h m a S r i Krishnapremi Maharaj, started his Sri Bagavatha Gyna yagnam at Ayodya M a n d a p a m . Ye s , t h e overflowing congregation of devotees believed strongly that the downpour was only an addition to the showers of Gurukrupa they received from the divine katakshaveekshanam of Sri Anna. Bhakthas thanked the organisers, Sri A s t h i k a S e v a Samajam,Ramapuram for giving an opportunity to be blessed with the divine pravachanams of the Mahathma, besides the Moola Parayanam sessions in the mornings. A jam-packed Ayodya Mandapam was the seat of Narayana Nama Smruthi

and Shruthi last week. The grand finale of Srimad Bagavadha sampoornam will take place on July 26. The Samithi has organised Sri Sooktha Homams, Sri Maha Chandi Yangams and Sri Lalitha Kungumarchana Laksha pooja. Besides Namasankeerthanams and Nrithyasan keerthanams, Sri Andal Thirukkalyanam and Anjaneya Uthsavam will be conducted next week. In the last seven days, Sri Anna in his reverberating voice, not only gave the nectar of Srimad Bagavatha sara but also woven the episodes of the Epic, with the eternal Vedic codes of dharma and bhakthi, gnana and vairagya. All the serious lessons of life, living, death, janma, athma, saranagathi and moksha were passed on to the bhaktha most eloquently in his sugar coated words yet with an unmatchable sense of humour. Who can forget incidents like the ‘patti cutting narthangai in the arivalmani…..the story the Sparshakkal, the poor old

retired thatha…the much awaited sundal distribution at the end of a bhajani…….’ to name a few… He said that the most fortunate person in this Kali Yuga, is the one with the Hari baktha rekha! Yes ! We do agree….but the full house at Ayodya Mandapam, on the concluding day of the Maha Yanga emphatically declared that they were doubly blessed because they also had the Premika Bhakthi Rekha. It’s indeed fortunate to sit in front of the Gyneshwara and listen to the Sapthagam. Radhe Krishna! Ever in Divine Service

The fervour of Aadi

Vadapalani Times’ Music Festival is seeing innovation week after week. The 28th week of the Music Festival was an innovative musical discourse by G Suhasini with vocal support by Sree Chitra. The discourse Balacharitham by Baby Suhasini was very interesting- for the theme and also the way in which the little Suhasini went about it. Both the artistes are disciples of Lalitha Subramaniam and excelled in their chosen area of the programme. A thunder shower that started just before the beginning of the programme actually appeared to be a prelude to the destruction of the a s u r a s b y Balathiriuparasundari, daughter of goddess Lalitha. T h e d i s c o u r s e

commenced with the narration of Bala Thripurasundari`s beauty, her drive to kill the asuras, which were aptly interspersed with related keerthans by Sree Chitra. Suhasini narrated the way how little Bala in the form of 30 Balathripurasundaris killed 30 asuras. The discourse had ample reference to Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Va m a n a a v a t h a r a t o highlight the greatness of the goddess. She quoted proverbs and conveyed the importance of Navarathri pooja and even the lack of recognition for women in the present times during her pravachanam. She conveyed the message that parayanam of Balathripurasundari will give peace. Sree Chitra, a senior disciple of Lalitha Subamanian rendered

keertanas such as Gajananayutham, Sarojadalanethri, Sreechkra raja nilaye, K a r p a g a m b i k e , Ganamoorthe and Santhi Nilava vendum in clear diction along with sangeethanubhvam. It is appreciable that Suhasini was able to grasp the subject and bring the essence in a perfect manner with apt abhinaya and Sree Chitra complemented her very well in the whole programme. Praveen on key board and Koushik Rajagopal on mrudangam supported the artistes very well. Chandrasekaran, president of Sankar Matam praised Vadapalani Times for the variety in the programmes. He distributed appreciation certificates and mementoes to the artistes.
