Hello doctor, I am seven months pregnant and this is my first pregnancy. Last week I was diagnosed to have diabetes. Now the doctor has advised me to take insulin. Whether I can take medicines instead of insulin injections. Diabetes detected first time during pregnancy is called as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Now a days GDM is quite common in our population, due to family history of diabetes, stressful life, sedentary lifestyle and altered food habits. GDM most commonly diagnosed in the sixth or seventh months of pregnancy. Baseline of GDM management is on diet plan which includes quality, quantity and timing of food. The regular diabetes diet plan does not applicable in diabetes during pregnancy, since growing foetus needs adequate calories and nutritious diet. Insulin is prescribed to control diabetes during pregnancy. Insulin does not cross the placenta and does not have any effect the foetus. But oral diabetes drugs can cross the placenta and may cause problems to the foetus. Remember that blood sugar has to be kept under strict control. Fasting blood sugar level should be less than 100 mgs/dl and 2hour post prandial level less than 120 mgs/dl. Strict blood sugar control is needed to avoid abnormalities of the foetus and complications during delivery. Blood sugar has to be monitored weekly to maintain a strict diabetes control.

Walk your way to fitness

“I have two doctors, my left leg and my right." In today's fast paced life, people are leading a very unhealthy lifestyle. The fast paced life plays a major role in the increasing rate of diseases, stress levels and lack or inadequate sleep. Since walking meditation is very important, Vadapalani Times would like to discuss its nature, its significance, and the benefits. With the sun's soft rays touching your face, surrounded by natural sounds and sights, walking can be a marvelous experience. When you walk, you listen

to your breathing, it also offers time to think; walking can help our inner state of peace and bring equilibrium and also can help reflect on our lives when pressures mount on us. Walking helps alleviate the symptoms of depression and it is the safest start towards an exercise routine. To start with, always stick to a comfortable speed in which you do not gasp for breath. One should never start to jog immediately, take time and seek appropriate medical advice before jogging. Walking is good for your brain. In a study on walking and cognitive function, researchers have found that women who walked the equivalent of an easy pace at least 1.5 hours per week had significantly better cognitive function and less cognitive decline than women who walked less than 40 minutes per week. Think about that! Walking on the hills is also good. The uphill provides cardiovascular benefits and the downhill is known for

reducing the blood sugar levels. Walking on the hills may not be possible for all of us due to the location constraints. This can be achieved by using some specifically made Treadmills which simulate the required inclination. Walking helps burn fat, boosts the energy levels and decreases health risks. Many people whose lifestyle is sedentary or who are obese have very low fitness levels due to lack of exercise. It helps cure sleeplessness. Walking meditation can help us gain insight into the nature of things, and we should practice it as diligently as we practice sitting meditation or any other kind of meditation. By the practice of walking meditation, may you all readers be able to attain total purification in this very life! The list goes on, but if I continue, there'd be no time for you to start walking! Suffice to say that walking is certainly good for you!

Vadapalani Times shares with you the anguish expressed by one of our esteemed readers. Auto rickshaw dadagiri: It all begins like this. A few auto rickshaw drivers park their autos on one end of the street and start insisting that nearby residents should use only their autos and then keep a banner there. They quote more than the charges prescribed by the government and if any commuter tries to board any other auto, they threaten and shout him away. The passengers are left with no other alternative but to pay whatever amount they charge. Trade Monopoly: The real reason for forming the so called auto stands in public places is to extract more

money. They do not form these stands for the sake of passengers. Consumer rights - Please think of this: Suppose we are prevented from buying things from a shop which charges less for the same goods having same quality, how would we react? How is the situation now with many mobile and landline companies operating and slashing their rates? So consumer rights and competition go hand in hand. Monopoly is antiethetical to consumer rights. Hand wriggling public: Every time an auto driver extorts exorbitant amounts, the passenger raises a hue and cry but he/she does not bother to think about what they should do in order to prevent this from repeating.

What is the solution? The auto drivers have unknowingly realized that “Sange shaktih kaliyuge” – In the Kali Era Sanga (union/association/unity/co mbined organization) is the power to reckon with. Let us play the same game. Passengers should form local auto passengers association, hold regular meetings, show our numerical strength before the drivers. Even though some such associations exist, then a local passenger association is needed and regular meetings need to be conducted. Throw away selfishness: Cursing the drivers and government will not be of use. Give up selfishness and try to combine our energies.
