Graduation day held

I am diabetic for the past two years. I am taking pioglitazone and metformin combination tablet twice a day for the past six months. My blood sugar values are under control. However I have put on weight and weigh six kilograms more for the past three months. How can I reduce my weight? This is very commonly encountered problem for many diabetes patients. The answer to your question is present in your question itself. We have variety of antidiabetic drugs to control blood sugar level. Pioglitazone is one drug which causes weight gain to the patient. Pioglitazone is the drug which increases the insulin action in your body. Pioglitazone induces the transfer of fat present inside the abdomen, around liver and all (visceral fat) to the peripheral subcutaneous tissue (peripheral fat). Pioglitazone also induces increased water and sodium retention in your kidney. By these two mechanisms, some patients taking pioglitazone tend to put on weight and some leg swelling too. Metformin is the drug which induces weight loss. That’s why these drugs are usually given together to counteract the individual effect. If the weight gain is more disturbing, you will have to stop pioglitazone and switchover to some other antidiabetic drugs to control blood sugar. Pioglitazone has so many advantages like reducing the lipids, reduction in blood pressure and so on. Consult your doctor regarding the continuation of above drug or to stop that.

Maghadheera in Tamil

Actress Kushboo got a reprieve from about 22 cases filed against her for apparently supporting premarital sex. The criminal cases filed against her after she allegedly endorsed premarital sex in interviews to various magazines in 2005. The Supreme Court while reserving its judgment on a special leave petition (SLP) filed by actress Kushboo, seeking to quash the cases has observed that a man and woman living together without getting married cannot be construed as an offense.The counsel argued that Kushboo’s comments made in the media would adversely affect the minds of young people and a decay in moral values and the country’s ethos. The three-judge bench comprising of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, justices Deepak Varma and BS Chauhan observed, “When two adult people want to live together what is the offense? Does it amount

to an offence? Living together is not an offence. It cannot be an offence.”The court said that even Lord Krishna and Radha lived together according to

mythology. The Bench said that there was no law which prohibited a live-in relationship or pre- marital sex. -VP Times

ARTS

Concert in capital

It was wah, wah all the way in the country’s capital on March 7, just a day before the International Women’s Day. The Ravi Shankar auditorium witnessed the supremacy of women in the field of art, especially in the field of Carnatic music. Yes !It was a concert by none other than Chennai’s most popular musician, Aruna Sairam and the concert was organized by Vinod K K a p o o r, c h a i r m a n , Keggfarms. The concert saw the crème de la crème of Delhi listening to her in rapt attention, which included connoisseurs of Hindustani music, industrialists, business magnets and several rasikas of Indian classical music.A beautifully decorated dais with a back drop of strings of golden hued marigolds alternated by auspicious diyas set the stage for the divine nadaanubhava to follow. After the welcome address by Kapoor, Aruna started the kutchery in the most traditional style with the Bhairavi varnam rendered in the madyamakala

pramana , bringing out its majestic grandeur with her powerful voice. After having laid a firm foundation with the beauty of Bhairavi, she moved on to bring out the mind boggling, myriad colours of the magic of Carnatic music. Saint Thygaraja’s Entha muthho… in Bindhumalini created a soothing effect and it was followed by the bhakthi laden pasuram Vandinam Muralum Solai.. in the matchless Thodi raga and Aruna’s rendering was simply soul- stirring. Sri Muthuswami Dikshithar in his Kamalaambaa Navaavarna kruthi is said to have encoded the sarva mohana chakra; not only did the kruthi entice everybody but it also mesmerised the entire audience with her bhava laden delivery, perfect swings, showcasing the nuances of the mellifluous raga. The elite rasikas of Delhi could appreciate every bit of the concert and it burst off into ecstatic wah, wahs…every now and then. The scholarly Shanmugapriya ragam,

In the path of devotion

thanam, pallavi, Papanasam Sivan’s Nambikkettavar in Hindolam, Thirtha Vittala an abhang in Bhimsen Joshi’s style , the evergreen Kalinga Narthana thillana …all came one after the other with extreme ease and mastery. Interestingly, Aruna also took care to enlighten the Delhi audience about some of the intricacies and formats so special to the kutcheri padhathi of the south. Bhaskar on the violin , J. vaidyanathan on the mrudangam and Ramani on the ghatam vied with each other to embellish the concert with their special touches. The concluding piece of the concert was in Bengali in praise of Ma Kali and it was a fitting salutation to womanhood on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

You are writing exams and expecting the results. My best wishes for your success.I have one advice for all of you based on my own experience of writing various examinations. I wrote five important exams in my educational period ESLC (VIIIth Class), SSLC (Xth Class), Intermediate (XIIth Class), BSc, DMIT (aeronautical engineering). Most of the time, the outcome was not as per my expectations. I had to even loose one year due to a general paper leakage. Dear young friends, I am saying all this to you to bring in your mind that exams and exam results are not ultimate in life. If I don’t perform properly for the first time, I re-write and succeed. Hence, friends, I suggest you: success always brings happiness, but sometime we have to be prepared to go through some setback in examination due to many reasons. Dear young

friends, I would like you to remember my teacher’s advice; “in life, we have to be prepared to go through certain unexpected problems. The problem should not become our captain. Students like you, should become the captain of the problem, defeat the problem and succeed”.So, my dear young friends, the courage to succeed and courage to face unexpected problems are the unique qualities of the youth. If God is with us, who can be against? You will definitely succeed, go on trying. Do

not get disheartened by temporary setbacks. Let me remind you, my dear young friends, a famous poem;

The case of expired drugs creates panic The unearthing of spurious drugs worth several crores of rupees has send shock waves in the minds of the people. The arrest of seven persons in connection with repackaging and selling of expired drugs in the city had triggered a series of cases related to spurious drugs coming to light. Two of the accused reportedly told the police that they had been picking discarded packs of such medicines from the Kodungaiyur dumping yard and re-labelling them before selling them to the agents. B Chandran, a resident of Vadapalani said that the involvement of big

companies in the racket make things worse as the chances of such unsafe medicines reaching out to several other areas is rampant. However, Kumar, a resident of K K Nagar wonders how a crime of this magnitude can go unnoticed for a long time. “It shows that the authorities failed to conduct regular inspection and implementation of rules,” he says.However Vasantha, a senior citizen has only one request. “The authorities as announced should deal with iron hands so that such malpractices and lifethreatening issues are not repeated.”
