Metro Rail conducts soil test elevated viaduct from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar for a length of 4.5 kms to Soma Enterprises Ltd, Hyderabad at a cost of Rs. 199.20 crores. For the construction of the rest of the elevated portions, tenders would be floated soon. The elevated portions covers Ashok Nagar to St Thomas Mount, which comes under the second corridor linking Chennai Central and St Thomas Mount. It seems the Metro Rail will soon be a reality and be able to decongest the city. Last Wednesday, the contractors of the Metro Rail Corporation kickstarted soil test at 100 Feet Road on the stretch of the s e c o n d r a i l c o r r i d o r. The elevated corridor will be constructed along the middle of the median on the 100 Feet Road. Apparently, the soil test is the preliminary step before the construction of the pillars. Rajalakshmi, disciple of Saroja Balasubramanian and granddaughter of Padmabhooshan Late B. Rajam Iyyer gave a vocal concert as part of the Music Festival organized by Vadapalani Times. Lalitha Subramanian, director of Rasikapriya, inaugurated the concert after explaining the aim and concept of Vadapalani Times' Music Festival.She introduced the artistes to the audience. Rajalakshmi commenced her concert with Veenai kuppaiar's begada varnam – Intha chalamela. She p r o c e e d e d t o Sureswaram, a composition of Mangalam Ganapathi in gambeera nattai and Deva deva kalayambike, a
composition of Swathi t h i r u n a l i n mayaamalavagowla ragam, which was good. Gopalakrishna Bharathi`s Sabapathikku in abhogi set to roopakam was good. Though a high expectation was there from the audience about the concert, lack of coordination between the artistes turned out to be a dampener. Patnam Subramania Iyyer`s Baridanamichchi was sung in bilahari ragam set to kantachapu. Kaya Rohanesam in devaganadhari ragam set to roopakam, Ambujam Krishnan`s Om Namo Narayana in karnaranjani set to kandachapu and Syama Sastri`s Saroijadalanethri in

seemed to be the vocalist`s favourite, going by the involvement with which she presented it. Chintana sada in kuntalavarali was melodious. Karaharapriya ragam was the main item of the evening. She has given detailed alapana and sang Samana Mevaru with clear diction. Kalpanaswaram part proved the artiste’s calibre and reflected her musical background. Ehi mudam Dehi, a tharangam, composition of Narayana Teerthar in Khamas was good. The thukda items such as Muruganin maru peyar in behag, Thirupughaz in s a v e r i and Maitreem Bajata need special mention. Sivakami Narayanan on violin and Sarath Babu on mrudangam enhanced Swathi’s performance. Every summer day is challenging to diabetes patient. For most of the diabetic patients, in the month of May, blood sugar levels will show an increase. Not only the blood sugar values, but the complications arising out of diabetic, also will go up during summer. D r. A . S h a n m u g a m , Consultant Diabetologist, details some of the complications and the preventive steps to tackle them. Why the blood sugar level shoots up in summer? The reason for blood sugar level increase during summer is due to dehydration. If you are not suffering from diabetic kidney damage, a diabetic patient should take 1or 2
litres of water extra on a daily basis to overcome dehydration. Another reason is due to the skipping of tablets and lack of proper diet plan. Even if you are enjoying a vacation, don't forget to take medicines and stick on to the diet like normal days. How to tackle infections in summer? Another cause for concern is the fungal and bacterial infections, which are c o m m o n i n s u m m e r. Bathing twice a day gives an easy solution to avoid such infections. Watch your legs daily. Do make it a routine. Have a look at the toe and web spaces for the fungal infections. Fungal infections are common in diabetic patients who continuously wear the shoes. Walking with bare foot during the summer is to be avoided. Blisters may occur if footwear is not used which may later on lead to diabetic foot ulcer. Diabetic patients should avoid fruit juices like watermelon, tender coconut and bottled drinks. The appropriate drinks for diabetic patients are freshly prepared lemon juices with low calorie sweeteners like sugarfree, zero, etc, if needed. Tomato juices can be taken without sugar. Besides, drink enormous amount of water and buttermilk to beat the summer. For diabetic patients, even though fruit juices and bottled drinks can quench their thirst there is the danger of their blood sugar level rising more than 400600 mg/dl. If the blood sugar values are within normal limits, (fasting blood sugar is 80-120mg / dl and post parandial blood sugar is 120-160mg /dl,) then the patients are allowed to take any one fruit salad of apple, guava, papaya, orange or watermelon. Diabetes patients can take any one fruit as listed above per day
in a limited quantity. How to keep the body fit in summer? Summer is the best time of the year to loss the extra fat and get back in shape. You can keep your body fit with a simple meal in summer. Avoid too many spices in the food. Add more vegetables in the diet. Vegetable salads are the best to keep the appetite down and to fulfill fibre and nutritional needs of the body. Vegetables with plenty of water, like ridge gourd, bottle gourd, ash gourd, snake gourd and cucumber should be added to the diet. Salads made of cucumber and steamed ash gourd is very good for health. To add a little bit of taste, add broccoli, capsicum or sprouts to it.
