I am diabetic for the past 16 years. I am taking medicines regularly. At present I have severe pain over right shoulder. I am not able to lift my hand and find it painful to even put on my shirt. This is one of the common problems faced by the diabetes patients. Almost 10 per cent of the diabetes patients suffer from shoulder pain problem. This condition is commonly known as frozen shoulder or periarthritis shoulder, but the new terminology for this condition is adhesive capsulitis of shoulder joint. Uncontrolled diabetes, patients having long duration of diabetes and people in the older age group is frequently affected by this condition. One peculiarity of this condition is that those having adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder have an increased incidence of diabetes eye disease particularly diabetic retinopathy. Though pain killers will help reduce the pain, it will not cure the condition. The acceptable and affordable management for this condition is strict blood sugar control, physiotherapy and regular exercise. With strict blood sugar control and regular physiotherapy, one can get back to pain free normal movements of the shoulder joint within months.

Chant your way to bliss A saying from the Vedas claims that "Speech is the essence of humanity." Mantras are well-off in their meanings and their meaning can be meditated while chanting. As the mind concentrates more and more on mantra and its meaning, it conditions the mind and takes it up to the higher states and forms to the path to salvation - the eternal bliss. Read on to know about the significance of mantra All of what humanity thinks and ultimately becomes is determined by the expression of ideas and actions through speech and its derivative, writing. Everything, the Vedas maintain, comes into being through speech. Ideas remain without being communicated until they are empowered through the power of speech. The New Testament, Gospel of John, starts "In the beginning was The Word. And the Word was with God and the Word was God" I n m a i n s t r e a m Ve d i c practices, most Buddhist techniques and classical Hinduism, mantra is viewed as a necessity for spiritual advancement and high attainment. In The Kalachakra Tantra, by the

Dalai Lama and Jeffrey Hopkins, the Dalai Lama states, "Therefore, without depending upon mantra, Buddhahood cannot be attained." Listening to mantras directly lowers blood pressure, normalises heart beat rate, brain wave pattern, adrenalin level and even cholesterol level. That is the reason why modern doctors advise people who are under high tension to sit and listen to music or mantras for few minutes. Reciting mantra has become an established feature of the Hindu practices. Mantra japa involves repetition of mantra again and again, usually 108 times to complete one cycle. Due to this, the rosary (mala) used for mantra japa has 108 beads in it. Chanting the mantras everyday is excellent when did at a particular time. In physics the time, space and observer are the three important factors. Exactly like that the time, space and the person connected with chanting or listening mantras are three important factors for deriving benefit of mantras. Hence sareera shuddhi, aahara shuddhi, mana shuddhi, vaak shuddhi and

karma shuddhi are essential for deriving the full benefit of chanting the mantra. Also the place where you are sitting should be calm and comfortable. The ideal timings are the Prabhata sandhya and Saayam sandhya.(morning & evening). Group chanting is also excellent. However, absolutely no mistake is expected in Vedic mantra chanting. A mantra is physically a pure sound and its repeated utterance creates a ring of sounds within and outside. If one ties a small stone at the end of a rope and swings it to revolve, then this small stone gets so powerful that if released it can even kill someone. The mantra if repeatedly chanted can create a dynamic sound wavelength which can inspire one to aspire for anything. The amalgamative power of a mantra at the sound and bhava level can become so prominent that one can even assume the qualities of the Divine. Va d a p a l a n i Ti m e s i s delighted to share the valuable treasure in this New Year 2010! -Vikram V
