Ban for Nayanthara

Nagesh, comedy king On comeback trail passes away

Nagesh, one of the greatest comedians passed away on January 31. He was ailing for quite sometime. He was known not only for his comedian roles but also for his character roles. He has acted in almost 1000 movies.

His entry to films was through Tamil plays like his contemporary actors. He started his acting career by acting in 'Kambar Ramayanam' enacted by some of his colleagues, and started playing small roles in different drama troupes before acting in cinema.

In the recent past Kollywood saw many actresses making an entry after marriage to do meaty roles. Actress Gopika, who married a doctor from Ireland may also follow the footsteps of Simran and

Nadiya it seems. While accepting an award at a function organized by a television channel she said that she doesn't mind acting if the role is good and the film is completed fast.

Actress Nayanthara has been banned by Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and Nadigar Sangam from acting in Tamil movies. Reports say that the ban is in the wake of her refusal to pay back the amount received for the movie Paiyaa. Producer and director Lingusamy had earlier signed her for the movie Paiyaa and later opted for

Tamannaha to act in it. It is alleged that Nayan refused to return the money. The TFPC and Nadigar Sangam have asked producers not to sign her for any future films. In their statement they have requested the producers association in other languages like Telugu and Malayalam also not to sign Nayanthara for movies.

Arts Matured presentation Janani Sethunarayanan, disciple of Acharya Choodamani Anitha Guha, gave a dance recital at P. Obul Reddy Hall on behalf of Sree Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha`s 20th Bharatham Festival. She began her recital with traditional mallari in Gambheera nattai, which depicted the greatness of Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Durga with apt poses. The Navaragamalika varnam Swamiai Azhaithodi va sakhiye, was very captivative. It reflected the dancer's caliber. The pallavi depicted the request of Nayika to her friend for union with Nayaka . The first two charanams depicted the description of hero along with nature's beauty in the evening. The ragas thodi, devamanohari, vasantha, saaranga, sankarabharanam, aarabhi. ,bhairavi were taken during sanchara, which were shown as a dramatised narration . The feeling of togetherness and inseparable feel about the hero executed through sanchara charanam, Sada Ninaivu Kondu Meyyal meeruthe, was simply superb. Dance poses of Lord Natarajaswami and Jagajjanani were executed neatly with grace. The adavus presented with

proper theermanams ' reflected the dancers knowledge in rhythm. A padam on Lord Krishna proved the artiste's mettle in abhinayam aspect, which was presented through Eppadi than in Neelambari set to Adi thalam. Kalki Krishnamoorthy`s composition, Alai kadal

Music Festival included Yochana in Darbar, Manavyalakinchare in Nalinakanthi, Devi neeye thunai in Keervani, Sabapathikku in Abhogi. Her rendering was pleasing and impressive. If the artiste takes care of the diction while rendering keerthanas in other languages, it can take her to further heights. The medley of songs was good as Radha sametha Krishna in Yamuna Kalyani created the mood of bhajana sampradaya. Kandanaal

would have been more enjoyable for the music lovers, if the artistes announce the composer's name, raga, thala and sahitya. A decade of training under her guru had given her confidence and she can further take it up by attending concerts of different musicians. Bhagyalakshmi on violin and Koushik on mrudangam supported the vocalist in an apt way. Sarma

S.Padmavathy, disciple of Lalitha Subramanian, and an MBA student gave a vocal concert on February 1 at Music World, Saligramam as part of 52 week Music Festival organised by Vadapalani Times and Music World. She began her concert with Vanajakshi, a varnam in Kalyani ragam. Keerthanas such as Mahaganapathim in Nattai, Jagadeeswari in Mohanam were captivating. The raga Shanmugapriya was elaborated with alapana and kalpana swarams which reflected the guru's training. Being the main item, violin by Bagyalakshmi proved her caliber through the aalapana and kalpanaswarams. Young Kaushik on mrudangam excelled in

Young Saisudha, disciple of Subhasree, director of Sree Natya Kalakshethra, gave a performance at P.Obul Reddy Hall as a part of Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha`s 20th Bharatham Festival last Sunday. She commenced her performance with pushpanjali in Gambheera nattai set to adhi talam in a traditional manner. Aananda Natamaduvar Thillai in poorvikalyani ragam set to Roopakam depicted the various forms of Lord Nataraja . Dancer justified this item by presenting various poses. "Aarupadai veedu" choreographed in a varnam pattern, dealt with episodes of Pranavamanthropadesam and avvai`s sutta pazham. Both were executed with neat dramatisation. Saisudha's rhythmic sense excelled when she presented the jathis, with neat footwork and rhythmic sense. A divine ambience was created through the bhajan aspect, which was in circular movements. Suddha Satwananda`s composition Kanda Naal Mudalai kadhal perugudhadi in Madhuvanthi ragam conveyed the nayika's love for Lord Muruga. Govardhana giridhari reflected graceness. Footwork according to nattuvangam cyllables and mrudangam patterns in

circular movements formed good impression on dancer's knowledge. The change of costumes to suit the items was superb and the selection of colours was apt. The performance concluded with a thillana by Swathi Thirunal in Dhanasree raga. Familiar TV artiste and classical dancer Brinda Das was the

chief guest of the evening. She appreciated Saisudha`s confidence and stage presence. She mentioned about the dancer's involvement and said that she enjoyed the recital throughly. Guru Subhasree was on Nattuvangam. Sai & Koushik gave vocal support Sarma

vital link road that connects Arcot Road with Koyambedu market and CMBT Terminus. "This Road is not broad enough to accommodate the heavy traffic. Severe traffic jam and accidents have been a cause for concern, " says a resident. Hence Virugambakkam Residents Welfare Association (VRWA) has approached various

government agencies to widen this narrow road and make it 80 feet wide road. The request has been pending for a long time. "We have handed over a Petition in person to K.N. Nehru, Transport Minister and to S. Machendra Nathan, Transport Commissioner," says S. Arumainathan, president of VRWA. "Though the master plan for the

expansion of this road was created almost two decades ago, till date it has not been executed," he adds. The encroachment on this narrow road remains one of the major problems for the residents and commuters. A signature campaign was conducted last year, in which around 2000 people participated. A copy of the signature campaign was
